Match of the Day 1964 - Our 3-2 win over Arsenal at Anfield was the first game ever to be screened on the BBC’s new “Match Of The Day” show. Phil Chisnall was the first player to kick a ball on MOTD, knocking the kick-off to Gordon Wallace, who grabbed a brace, his final reds goals, including the winner that deflected off Don Howe past ex-reds keeper Jim Furnell. Roger Hunt headed in the first goal on the show that only garnered an audience of 75,000 as BBC2 was still unavailable in large parts of the country. Future red Geoff Strong scored for the Gunners, with Joe Baker bagging one of his four past us, while a black cat did a full lap of the pitch! Soto departs 2011 – Greek centre-half Sotirios Kyrgiakos joined VfL Wolfsburg on a free transfer. He had arrived from A.E.K Athens for £2m two years earlier, following the summer departure of Sami Hyypiä. Soto bagged three goals in 49 largely solid performances at the back, becoming something of a cult figure for his no-nonsense style. On the same day, Steve Staunton joined Sunderland as a scout. 2015 – Full-back Tom Lowry died. He signed pro terms in April 1963 but only ever played one first-team game, when Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which came only five days before the 1965 FA Cup Final. He moved on to Crewe Alexandra in June 1966, going on to set their club record of 436 League appearances that stands to this day. Bert’s bow 1959 - Goalkeeper Bert Slater made his reds debut as we lost 3-2 at Cardiff City in our first game of the season. Cardiff in fact scored all five goals, as we benefited from two own goals from the unfortunate Danny Malloy, who had already scored an own goal against the reds two years earlier! Johnny Watkins netted the first of his four goals against us, with Graham Moore and Steve Mokone also on target. Seventies wins 1970 - We thumped Huddersfield Town 4-0 at Anfield with John McLaughlin netting his first two reds goals as Alun Evans also grabbed a brace. Forward Bobby Graham played his hundredth reds game. 1978 - We won another top-flight fixture, this time 3-0 at FA Cup holders Ipswich Town, when Graeme Souness struck before a Kenny Dalglish double, with Ray Kennedy playing his 200th reds game. Eight goals shared with the mancs 1953 - Centre-forward Louis Bimpson struck twice at Anfield, but it was not enough to hand us victory over Manchester United, as the game ended 4-4, with Billy Liddell and Bill Jones also on the scoresheet. Jack Rowley struck the last of his six goals past us, with Tommy Taylor nabbing the first of his four against the reds and Eddie Lewis and Roger Byrne also on target. 2022 - Mohamed Salah scored a club record tenth goal against Manchester United, in a joint club record fourth consecutive game against the Red Devils, also becoming the club’s eighth top all-time goalscorer. However, it was only a late consolation as we lost 2-1 thanks to a Jadon Sancho strike and one of Marcus Rashford’s seven goals against us. In and out 2007 - Centre-half Mikel San José signed from Athletic de Bilbao, while keeper Péter Gulácsi arrived on loan from MTK Hungária. The young Hungarian made it into our match-day squad 51 times before moving to Red Bull Salzburg for free in June 2013, while San José did the same at Stamford Bridge in the League in February 2008, although he left for Athletic de Bilbao in May 2010. 2005 - It was a busy day at Melwood, with one arrival and two players departing on loan. Austrian midfielder Besian Idrizaj signed from LASK for £190,000, while Robbie Foy moved to Wrexham and John Welsh signed for Hull City. Welsh struck twice in 23 games before signing permanently for the Tigers in January 2006 in a swap deal for winger Paul Anderson. Foy nabbed three goals in twenty games while at the Racecourse Ground. On the same day, ex-reds loanee keeper Paul Jones joined Millwall on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He played four times for the struggling South London outfit. 2006 - Foy signed for Sc***horpe United on non-contract terms. He struck once in nine outings for the Iron but was released after just a season. 2009 - Idrizaj signed for Swansea City. He played four times for the Swans before tragically dying in May 2010 of a suspected heart attack at the age of just 22. A new striker 1893 - Centre-forward James Henderson signed from Scottish side Annbank. He only ever made one first-team appearance for the reds, in our first ever Football League fixture, a 2-0 Second Division win at Middlesbrough Ironopolis. Kenny resigns 1996 - Kenny Dalglish resigned as Director of Football at Blackburn Rovers. He had led them to the League title as team manager the year before. St. Michael signs on 1998 - Michael Owen signed a new five-year contract ten minutes before our first home game of the season, when Arsenal held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. Also recently 2006 - We squeezed into the group stage of the Champions League, being held to a 1-1 draw by Maccabi Haifa in Kyiv in the second leg of our Third Qualifying Round tie, to progress 3-2. Peter Crouch headed us in front, with the reds wasting numerous chances to build a convincing lead. We also suffered injuries to Momo Sissoko and Stephen Warnock, who joined Jamie Carragher and John Arne Riise on the sidelines. 1993 - Our most recent game before that came when Steve McManaman struck twice in a 5-0 thumping of Swindon Town at their County Ground. Neil Ruddock bagged his first reds goal as Ronnie Whelan bagged his 73rd and final strike for the club. Mike Marsh netted his last reds goal in his hundredth game for the club. A win in Ireland 1981 - Terry McDermott grabbed a brace, with Ronnie Whelan, Phil Neal and Kenny Dalglish also scoring, as we thumped Ronnie’s former side Home Farm 5-0 at Tolka Park in Dublin. This game had been arranged as part of Whelan’s transfer to Anfield. However, the match was almost cancelled after a massive H was carved into the pitch the night before in support of IRA hunger strikers. Emergency re-turfing saved the game with the reds flying over in the afternoon for the evening fixture. International reds 2007 - Young Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva made his senior international debut in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Algeria in Montpellier, playing alongside future reds keeper Alexander Doni. Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin all won their first caps as reds players, while Luis García made his first appearance while with Club Atlético de Madrid, as Spain won 3-2 in Greece with Xabi Alonso and Pepe Reina also in action. Ukraine beat Uzbekistan 2-1, with Israel beaten 2-1 in Belarus and the Netherlands losing 2-1 in Switzerland with Dirk Kuyt on target, and future reds Philipp Degen and John Heitinga also featuring. Future red Robbie Keane bagged a brace as the Republic of Ireland thumped Daniel Agger’s Denmark 4-0 in Copenhagen, with Steve Finnan and ex-red Darren Potter also in Steve Staunton’s line-up. David James won his first cap as a Portsmouth player as England lost 2-1 to Germany at Wembley, with Peter Crouch, future red Joe Cole and ex-red Michael Owen also playing. Javier Mascherano faced John Arne Riise with future red Maxi Rodríguez netting as Norway beat Argentina 2-1 in Oslo, while future red Ragnar Klavan was sent off as Estonia beat Andorra 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Tallinn. Also in international action that day were Sami Hyypiä, future reds Alberto Aquilani, Milan Jovanović, Alex Manninger, Raul Meireles, Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Touré, ex-reds Nicolas Anelka, Milan Baroš, Daniel Sjölund and Rigobert Song, with Roy Hodgson and John Toshack both on management duties. On the move 2008 – Reserves forward Craig Lindfield joined Bournemouth on loan. He struck once in five outings for the Cherries. 2005 - Paul Dalglish signed for Livingston from Modena. He struck six times in 23 games before moving to Hibernian in January 2006. 2003 - Former reserves midfielder Phil Charnock signed for basement side Bury on a free transfer from Port Vale, although he only stayed two weeks at Gigg Lane, playing three times. 1986 - Former reserves centre-back Dave Watson made his big move, leaving Norwich City for Everton for a fee of £900,000. At the time his brother Alex was still playing in our reserves. 1997 - Future reds keeper Pegguy Arphexad signed for Leicester City from Racing Club de Lens on a free transfer. He only played 29 times for the Foxes, before switching to Anfield in July 2000. 2012 – Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen signed for Ajax, whom he helped to claim the League title in his first season in Amsterdam. 2019 – Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signed a new contract, having struck five times in 47 outings to date since arriving from Arsenal for £35m two years earlier. 2022 – Forward David Amoo signed for Stevenage, scoring once in thirteen outings before moving on to Crewe Alexandra after just five months. Other reds games 1967 – We beat Arsenal 2-0 at Anfield with Roger Hunt scoring twice past ex-reds custodian Jim Furnell. 1962 – We drew 2-2 at Manchester City. Neil Young struck the first two of his four goals against the reds, after first Ronnie Moran had converted a penalty and then Roger Hunt scored. 1949 – Stoke City held us to a goalless draw at the Victoria Ground. Billy’s day 2019 – Billy Koumetio won his second and final cap for France Under-18’s in their 1-1 friendly draw with Paraguay. Isaac Mabaya featured for England Under-16’s on the same day as they were held to a 3-3 friendly draw by the Republic of Ireland at St. George’s Park. 2020 – Koumetio played his first games for the club, as did left-back Kostas Tsimikas in our 3-0 defeat of VfB Stuttgart in a behind closed doors friendly in Austria. Roberto Firmino, Naby Keïta and Rhian Brewster all scored. Also in international action 1990 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye, then still with Kongsvinger, won his eighth cap for Norway as they lost 2-1 at home to Sweden in a friendly, played in Stavanger. 1993 - Gérard Houllier managed France as they drew a World Cup qualifier 1-1 in Sweden. On the same day, future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played for Brazil as they beat Ecuador 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier in São Paulo. 2017 – Bobby Duncan featured for England Under-17’s in their 2-1 defeat by Italy in Kidderminster, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. 2023 – Future red Rio Ngumoha played for England Under-16’s as they lost a friendly 3-1 in Italy. -
New double act 1998 - The first official reds game under the joint command of Roy Evans and Gérard Houllier took place. We won 2-1 at Southampton, thanks to goals from Karlheinz Riedle and Michael Owen. Their first signing as joint bosses, Norwegian right-back Vegard Heggem, made his debut in this game. Egil Ostenstad had opened the scoring for the home side. Losing League starts 1975 - Joey Jones made his reds debut as we went down 2-0 in our season opener at Queens Park Rangers, who ended the season in second place, just one point behind the mighty reds. Gerry Francis scored a goal at the end of a slick passing move that was later named as the BBC’s Goal of the Season, with substitute Mick Leach adding the second. 1992 - David James made his debut in our 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, our first game in the newly-formed Premiership. This was also the first Premiership game to be screened live on Sky with Teddy Sheringham netting one of his seven goals against us. Birth and death 1964 - Barry Venison was born in Consett. He signed from Sunderland for £200,000 in July 1986 and made 158 appearances for the reds, scoring three times and helping us to claim two League titles, the FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. He moved on to Newcastle United for £250,000 in July 1992. 1999 – Scottish left-winger Tommy McLeod died. He joined the reds from the Army in October 1945, but only made seven senior appearances before joining Chesterfield in June 1951. Mersey Charity 1986 - Three months after beating the Toffees at Wembley to complete our first ever League and Cup double, the two sides met again there for the FA Charity Shield. Ian Rush equalised in our 1-1 draw after Adrian Heath had scored with just ten minutes remaining, with the trophy being shared by the two clubs. Bruce Grobbelaar was replaced by substitute Mike Hooper just before the hour mark, who was making his debut, so ending Bruce’s run of 310 consecutive reds games. New signing Barry Venison also made his first-class reds bow in this match, on his 22nd birthday, while Craig Johnston played his 200th game for the club. Ins and out 2014 – Left-back Alberto Moreno signed from his hometown club Sevilla for £12m. He struck three times in 141 outings before being released in June 2019. 1961 – Centre-half John Nicholson was sold to Port Vale, having only made one senior reds appearance since turning pro in January 1957. He played over 200 games for the Valiants. 1893 – Forward Albert Worgan signed for the reds. He struck twice in two senior outings before moving on in 1895. Most recently 2009 – Centre-half Daniel Ayala and right-back Glen Johnson both debuted as we lost 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in our season opener. Ayala came off the bench when Martin Škrtel had to go off following a clash of heads with Jamie Carragher. Steven Gerrard bagged our goal from the spot. 2008 – Fernando Torres struck the only goal of the game late on as we won at Sunderland in our opening League game of the season. Back up north 1939 – Left-half John Browning moved on to Southern League side Gillingham. He had signed from Dunoon Athletic in March 1934, making just nineteen appearances. 1962 – Right-back John Molyneux was sold back to Chester, having signed from there for £5,500 in June 1955. He bagged three goals in 249 games, but did not survive Bill Shankly’s early clear-out. Ephraim on the mark 1924 - Legendary full-back Ephraim Longworth scored one of his four only recorded goals in a public practice game for Stripes vs. Reds. He signed in June 1910 from Leyton Orient, playing 370 times between then and 1928, and becoming the first red to captain England. He then served as Reserve team trainer, before joining the ground staff. Kennedy double 1980 - Both Alan and Ray Kennedy scored in our 3-0 defeat of Crystal Palace at Anfield after Kenny Dalglish had opened the scoring. 1969 - We also won in the top-flight, with Emlyn Hughes and Chris Lawler on target in our 2-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur. Beating the Imps 2006 - A Liverpool XI won 2-1 at Lincoln City, a game arranged as part of the Jack Hobbs transfer a year earlier. Mark González and Besian Idrizaj scored for the reds. Personal honours 2001 - Reds trio Sami Hyypiä, Gary McAllister and Michael Owen were all honoured by legendary French sports paper L’Équipe for the role they played in the club’s unprecedented treble success, being named in their star-studded team of the season. World star Rigo 2000 - Rigobert Song was in action for a FIFA World Stars XI as they were handed a 5-1 beating by France in Marseille. Future red Nicolas Anelka scored while winning his first cap as a Paris Saint-Germain player, with David Trezeguet bagging a hat-trick. Final caps 2000 - Finland beat Norway 3-1 with future red Jari Litmanen bagging a brace. Stig Inge Bjørnebye was sent off as he won his 74th cap, his first as a Blackburn Rovers player following his departure from Anfield two months earlier, while John Arne Riise was winning his final cap as an AS Monaco player. The game was staged to officially open the new FinnAir Stadium in Helsinki, with Sami Hyypiä also in action. On the same day, Brad Friedel won his final cap as a reds player, his 66th in all, as the USA thumped Barbados 7-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Boston. Meanwhile, Dietmar Hamann, ex-red Jim Magilton and future reds Yossi Benayoun, Igor Bišcan, Jerzy Dudek and Alex Manninger were also in friendly action. 1995 - Friedel won his last cap whilst with Danish side Brøndby IF, his 35th to that point, as they lost 1-0 to Sweden in a friendly in Norrköping. 2005 – Future red Stewart Downing won his eighth and last England Under-21’s cap as they won 1-0 in Denmark, with Scott Carson and future red James Milner also featuring. 2006 - Dirk Kuyt won his final cap while with Feyenoord as the Netherlands beat Steve Staunton’s Republic of Ireland 4-0 at Lansdowne Road, with Steve Finnan and future reds coach John Heitinga also featuring. Olympian reds 2008 – Ryan Babel captained the Netherlands as they lost 2-1 to Javier Mascherano’s Argentina after extra time in the Quarter-final of the Olympics Finals in Shanghai. Meanwhile, Lucas Leiva featured in Brazil’s 2-0 defeat of Cameroon at the same stage in Shenyang. First caps 1995 - Stéphane Henchoz won his first cap as a Hamburger SV player, and eleventh in all, as Roy Hodgson’s Switzerland won 2-0 in a Euro ’96 qualifier in Iceland. István Kozma played for Hungary for the first time while with APOEL in their 2-0 home friendly defeat by Israel. Meanwhile, future reds Patrik Berger, Øyvind Leonhardsen and Gary McAllister all also featured in qualifiers. 1992 – Hodgson also took charge of the Swiss as they thumped Estonia 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Tallinn. On the same day, future red Titi Camara struck for Guinea as they beat Chad 3-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, although the result was later annulled after Chad withdrew from the tournament after just two fixtures. 2000 - Henchoz also represented his country, making his 43rd appearance in a 2-2 friendly draw with Greece in Saint-Gallen. Crouchie on target again 2006 - Peter Crouch bagged a brace as England beat Greece 4-0 in a friendly at Old Trafford, with Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and future red Stewart Downing also featuring, and Chris Kirkland making a belated first senior international appearance, while Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his first cap as an Eintracht Frankfurt player, and twentieth to date. On the same day, Sami Hyypiä won his fiftieth cap as a reds player, and 76th in all, captaining Roy Hodgson’s Finland to a 2-1 home defeat to Northern Ireland. Also in international action that day were Daniel Agger, Jerzy Dudek, John Arne Riise, ex-red Rigobert Song and future reds Charlie Adam, Philipp Degen, Ragnar Klavan, Nikolay Mihaylov and Kolo Touré. Ayre apparent 2007 - Commercial Director Ian Ayre started work in his new job for the club. He had previously been Chief Executive of Total Sports Asia, a brand solutions company advising international companies on rolling out Asian sports and entertainment campaigns, having once been Chief Executive and Chairman of Huddersfield Town. He said on being appointed that, “being Liverpool born and bred, this is a dream job for me”. He was promoted to Managing Director in May 2014, leaving the club in February 2017 to take charge of TSV 1860 München. Youngsters on target 2005 - Anthony Le Tallec struck as France Under-21’s drew 2-2 with Italy in a friendly in Libourne, with fellow red Carl Medjani also featuring. On the same day, Besian Idrizaj won his last Under-19’s cap for Austria as a Linzer ASK player, scoring in their friendly defeat of Northern Ireland in Gussing. On the move 1995 - Paul Jewell joined First Division Grimsby Town on loan from Bradford City. He netted once in six appearances for the Mariners. 2002 - John Miles signed for Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer from Stoke City. He netted just once in eight games in his one season at Gresty Road. 2011 – Centre-half Daniel Ayala was sold to Norwich City for £850,000 after five senior reds games. He only played ten times for the Canaries before joining Middlesbrough in January 2014 after a successful loan spell. 2014 – Former loanee winger Victor Moses joined Stoke City for the season from Chelsea, going on to bag four goals in 23 games for the Potters. 2017 – Young winger Sheyi Ojo joined Fulham on loan, netting four times in 24 games for the Cottagers. 2021 – Centre-half Ben Davies joined Sheffield United on loan, netting once in 23 outings for the Blades. On the same day, midfielder Leighton Clarkson moved to Blackburn Rovers for the season, with whom he only played twice before returning to Anfield in January 2022. Also in international action 2009 – Future red Emre Can played for Germany Under-16’s in their 6-2 defeat of Austria in Liechtenstein. 1989 – Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as they lost 4-2 to France in a friendly in Malmö. -
In comes Spud 1997 - Danny Murphy arrived from Crewe Alexandra for an overall £3m fee. Spud was nearly on his way out early into his Anfield career, but later established himself as a vital squad member. He made 249 first-team appearances, scoring a useful 44 times, before moving to Charlton Athletic for £2.5m in August 2004. He had helped us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and FA Charity Shield in his time at the club. Double capture 2011 – Winger Stewart Downing signed from Aston Villa for £18.5m, while keeper Alexander Doni joined on a free transfer from Roma. Downing netted seven times in 91 outings before moving to West Ham United for £6m in August 2013, as well as scoring in the shoot-out as we claimed the Carling Cup at Wembley in 2012. Doni featured four times before joining Botafogo in his native Brazil in January 2013 having apparently suffered a heart attack during a routine medical in the summer of 2012. Final despair 2018 – Dejan Lovren played in the World Cup Final in Moscow, with France beating Croatia 4-2. 2007 - Javier Mascherano was on the losing side in the Copa América Final, as Argentina were beaten 3-0 by future red Alexander Doni’s Brazil in Venezuela. Meanwhile, Emiliano Insúa featured as Argentina Under-20’s beat Mexico 1-0 in the Quarter-final of the World Championships in Ottawa. Off goes Igor 2005 - Igor Bišcan signed for Panathinaikos after 118 reds games. The big Croat netted three times as he helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Charity Shield in 2001, the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role on the road to Istanbul. He had arrived from Dinamo Zagreb for £5.5m in December 2000. 1969 – Keeper John Ogston moved on to Doncaster Rovers, after a successful loan spell. He signed from his hometown club Aberdeen for £10,000 in September 1965 having played over 200 games for the Dons, but only appeared once for the reds. Other arrivals 1989 – Swedish centre-half Glenn Hysén signed from Fiorentina for £600,000. He went on to make 93 appearances, notching three times and helping us to our most recent title win in 1990, as well as the FA Charity Shield on his debut. He returned to his hometown to sign for GAIS in May 1992. 2014 - Serbian winger Lazar Marković signed from SL Benfica for £19.8m. He struck three times in 34 games before spending much of his time out on loan, moving on to Fulham for free in February 2019. Bellers off the mark 2006 - Paul Anderson and Craig Bellamy both scored in their first reds games as we won a friendly 2-0 at Wrexham. Also making their first senior appearances that day were Godwin Antwi, Danny Guthrie, Adam Hammill, Jack Hobbs, Besian Idrizaj, David Martin, Danny O'Donnell, Gabriel Paletta, Lee Peltier, Miki Roqué, James Smith and Robbie Threlfall. Keeping bows 2022 – Custodians Harvey Davies and Fabian Mrozek both played their first reds games as we beat Crystal Palace 2-0 to secure the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy 2022, thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah. More reds firsts 2009 - Keeper Péter Gulácsi, right-back Glen Johnson and centre-backs Daniel Ayala and Mikel San José all made their reds bows as we were held to a goalless draw in our friendly with St. Gallen 1879 in their AFG Arena in Switzerland. Beaten again 2020 – Arsenal came from behind to win 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium behind closed doors, as we fell to only our third League defeat of the season. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, but Alexandre Lacazette and Reiss Nelson both capitalised on reds errors to give the Gunners a half-time lead, which they held on to despite a second-half siege by the visitors. Bonne anniversaire 1981 - French midfielder Alou Diarra was born in Villepinte. After his free transfer from Bayern München in July 2002, he spent three seasons on loan in France, first at Le Havre AC, and then at Bastia and Racing Club de Lens, who he signed permanently for in June 2005. His only appearance in a red shirt came in a friendly win in Le Havre, when he enjoyed the rare distinction of returning to the pitch after having been substituted, as a replacement for Vegard Heggem. Suso the champion 2012 – Suso featured as Spain Under-19’s beat Greece 1-0 in the European Championships Final in Estonia. 2016 – Future red Dominic Solanke scored for England Under-19’s as they beat the Netherlands 2-1 in a group stage game in Germany, with Sheyi Ojo and Jordan Rossiter also in action. This was his second and last strike at this level. Stevie signs on again 2013 – Steven Gerrard signed a new contract to tie him to the club until 2015. He struck 186 times in 710 reds games, moving on to LA Galaxy in July 2015, before returning to the reds on the Academy staff. Redders in charge 1999 - It was confirmed that Jamie Redknapp would take over from the departed Paul Ince as reds captain. Robbie Fowler was appointed as his deputy. Unfortunately, much of his time as skipper was blighted by injury. Another birth and death 1920 - Keeper Ray Minshull was born in Bolton. He spent most of his five years at Anfield as deputy to Cyril Sidlow, making just 31 first-team appearances after joining the reds in September 1946. He left for Southport in June 1951, playing more than 200 times for them, and later became Player/Manager at Wigan Athletic. 1953 – Forward Dave Wright died. He bagged 35 goals in exactly a century of reds games after signing from Sunderland in March 1930. He remained at Anfield until July 1934, when he joined Hull City for £1,000. On the move 2003 – Future reds right-back Glen Johnson joined Chelsea from West Ham United for £6m, becoming the first signing of the Roman Abramovich era. He had made nineteen senior appearances. Emile on the move again 2006 - Emile Heskey joined Wigan Athletic from Birmingham City for £5.5m. He struck sixteen times in 88 games for the Latics before moving to Aston Villa for £3.5m in January 2009. Edging towards the title 1947 - We moved to within touching distance of our fifth League title as our 2-1 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers took us one point clear of both Wolves and Manchester United, in our final game of the season. Jack Balmer and Albert Stubbins bagged our goals before the break while Wolves legend Stan Cullis, who had guested for the reds during the war, played his final ever game for the club. Heysel: a black day in our history 1985 - If April 15th is the saddest day in the club’s history, May 29th is surely the lowest. 39 football fans died at the Heysel stadium in Brussels before our European Cup Final against Juventus. Although many factors contributed to the tragedy, it is inescapable that violence by reds fans played a major role in the deaths of 32 Italians, four Belgians, two Frenchmen and one man from Northern Ireland. Fourteen British people were later convicted of manslaughter and assault, with three Belgian officials also facing charges relating to the policing of the event. R.I.P. Winning the cup 1992 - We beat Second Division Sunderland 2-0 to win our fifth FA Cup. Ian Rush scored his fifth FA Cup Final goal, to break Stan Mortensen’s record, after Michael Thomas had opened the scoring, with Dean Saunders also hitting the bar. Graeme Souness led the team out just 48 hours after leaving hospital. However, the wrong medals were presented to each team, and so the two sides had to swap them afterwards! Ray Houghton was playing his 202nd and final reds game. Youngest ever 2010 - Left-back Jack Robinson became the reds’ youngest ever player, aged sixteen years and 250 days as we were held to a goalless draw at Hull City. This was Rafael Benítez’s last game in charge, and Dirk Kuyt’s 200th game for the club, while Nabil El Zhar made his 32nd and final reds appearance. 1995 – Steven Gerrard represented the reds for the first time ever, aged fourteen, as the ‘B’ team lost 2-1 at Manchester United, with the team including many winners of the FA Youth Cup a year later. Maxi’s treble 2011 - We secured our biggest every victory at Fulham, winning 5-2 after a sparkling performance. Maxi Rodríguez scored a hat-trick, netting in his third consecutive game while Dirk Kuyt struck in his fifth appearance in a row, with Luis Suárez also on target. Skipper Jamie Carragher played his 666th reds game, to move into second place on the all-time list, only behind Ian Callaghan. A quiet day Our only other two first-class games on this day in history both ended in stalemate. 1987 - We drew 3-3 at Chelsea, with Ian Rush, Steve McMahon and John Aldridge on target in our final game of the season, as we ended nine points behind Everton in second place. Nigel Spackman lined up alongside Gary Gillespie in central defence as Kenny Dalglish rested Alan Hansen ahead of the FA Cup Final, with Jan Mølby away on international duty. Unfortunately, Gillespie and Spackman collided when going for the same ball, resulting in them both taking to the Wembley turf in head bandages the following week! Before the game, the PFA’s Fair Play Trophy and a cheque for £2,000 was presented to Alan Hansen by PFA Secretary Gordon Taylor. He joined the reds from Bradford City in January 2008, making 22 first-team appearances, netting on his debut at BSC Young Boys in September 2013. He left for Derby County for an initial £2m in July 2017. 1996 – Midfielder Cameron Brannagan was born in Salford. He was with the club since the age of eight, making nine senior appearances before joining Oxford United in January 2018. 1989 – Former reserves forward Michael Nardiello was born. 1987 – Elite Development Coach Aaron Briggs was born. He joined the club in July 2024, having most recently been an Assistant Coach at Vfl Wolfsburg. 1968 - Neil Ruddock was born in Wandsworth, London. The comedy moment of the game came when David Di Michele performed a laughable dive that led to a booking. Nice one Cyril 1920 - Forward Cyril Done was born in Liverpool. He signed from Bootle Boys Brigade in January 1938 and struck 37 times in 110 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1947 and the FA Cup Final three years later. He moved to Tranmere Rovers in May 1952, scoring nearly a century of goals for them and Port Vale. Anfield goalkeeping debutants Two reds custodians have made their first-team debuts in top-flight fixtures at Anfield on this day. 1950 - Russell Crossley made his reds bow in our goalless draw with Middlesbrough. 1933 - We also faced Boro, when Sam English netted in our 4-1 defeat at Ayresome Park. He played 81 games in his two years at Anfield after signing from Internazionale for £4.2m in July 1997, scoring seventeen times. The mighty Finn played 464 reds games, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups following his £2.5m bargain capture from Dutch side Willem II in May 1999. He left the club in the summer of 2009 to sign for Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer, subsequently moving into management. Other reds celebrating 1998 – Trent Alexander-Arnold was born in Liverpool, signing pro terms on his seventeenth birthday. He was at the Academy since the age of six, striking nineteen times in 310 senior appearances across his first eight seasons as he helped the reds to claim the League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. 1890 – Centre-half Walter Wadsworth was born in Bootle. The hard man was signed from Ormskirk in April 1912, going on to score eight goals in 242 reds games, some alongside his brother Harold at outside-right as he helped us to claim back-to-back League titles in 1922 and 1923. 1990 – Uruguayan centre-half Sebastián Coates was born in Montevideo. He signed from Nacional for £7m in August 2011, scoring twice in 24 games before joining Sunderland for £4m in July 2015 after a season there on loan. European glory in Gay Paree 1981 - We won the European Cup for the third time by beating the mighty Real Madrid at the Parc des Princes in Paris thanks to an Alan Kennedy strike nine minutes from time. Unbeknownst to everyone, Ray Clemence was making his 665th and final reds appearance, keeping his 335th clean sheet, with Jimmy Case also playing his 269th and last reds game. Tommy’s testimonial 1977 - Two days after we won the European Cup for the first time, Anfield hosted a testimonial match for Tommy Smith, who had intended to retire. The game featured Liverpool playing a Bobby Charlton Select XI, ending 9-9 with both Tommy Smith and Ray Clemence grabbing a brace! Jimmy Case, David Fairclough, David Johnson, Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott were all also on target. Bobby Charlton briefly appeared for the reds in this game, with Emlyn Hughes taking a turn in goal and delivery driver Lol Cotterell also appearing, thanks to winning a competition on the BBC’s “The Big Time” programme, hosted by Esther Rantzen. Mighty Mouse off the mark 1971 - Kevin Keegan scored his first reds goal as we thumped Swedish side IFK Lulea 5-0 in an end-of-season friendly. Forward Jack Whitham added a brace, with Alec Lindsay and Bobby Graham also on the scoresheet. Young Mickey for England 1998 - Michael Owen scored his first senior England goal as they won 1-0 in the King Hassan II International Cup in Morocco, becoming England’s then youngest-ever scorer at eighteen years 164 days. Fellow red Paul Ince captained England for the seventh and final time in this game, with Steve McManaman also featuring. On the same day, Stig Inge Bjørnebye, ex-red Rigobert Song and future reds Markus Babbel, Dietmar Hamann, Sami Hyypiä, Jari Litmanen and Bolo Zenden all also played for their countries in friendlies. 2000 - Owen also scored for his country as Kevin Keegan’s England drew 1-1 with Brazil in a friendly at Wembley. Friendly victories 1953 - Bill Jones struck a treble as we thumped a Montreal All Stars side 10-0, with Billy Liddell, Joseph Maloney and Jimmy Payne all bagging braces and Alan A’Court also on the scoresheet. 1923 – We beat Levallois 4-0 in Paris. 1932 - We beat a Copenhagen Select 3-1, thanks to goals from Gordon Gunson, Edmund Hancock and Harold Barton. Our opponents were chosen to be the best players from the Danish League. 1964 – We beat German side Meidericher Spielverein 4-1 in Detroit, with Alf Arrowsmith and Gordon Wallace both striking twice. 1958 - We won 4-0 at Perpignan, with Bobby Campbell, Billy Liddell and Johnny Morrissey among the scorers. Four for Sir Roger 1964 – While his clubmates were playing in Detroit, Roger Hunt scored four goals for England as they thumped the USA 10-0 in a friendly in New York. Fellow red Peter Thompson also played. 1967 - Hunt also played for his country in a 1-0 friendly win in Austria. Rushie off the mark 1982 - Ian Rush netted his first full international goal, while winning his eighth cap, as Wales beat Northern Ireland 3-0 in the British International Championships in Wrexham. Ex-red Joey Jones also played. On the same day, future reds Assistant Manager Sean O’Driscoll played as the Republic of Ireland lost a friendly 7-0 in Brazil. On the move 1933 – Forward Jack ‘Nipper’ Roberts signed from Southport. He only made one first team appearance, moving on to Wigan Athletic in June 1934. He was an all-round sportsman, even playing baseball for England. He became famous when he escaped from a prisoner-of-war camp in Italy, walking 400 miles to freedom despite a broken neck! 2002 - A fee of £4.7m was agreed with French club Sedan for the Senegalese midfielder Salif Diao. He made a total of 61 reds appearances, netting three times, before joining Stoke City in January 2007 after a series of loan spells away from Anfield over his last three seasons. 2013 – Centre-half Danny Wilson signed for Heart Of Midlothian after a successful four-month loan spell at Tynecastle. On the same day, Rafael Benítez was appointed Manager of SSC Napoli, guiding them to the Italian Cup and a third-place Serie A finish in his first campaign in charge, resigning after a second season which they ended in fifth. Joneses for Wales 1997 - Reserves striker Lee Jones and future reds keeper Paul Jones both made their senior international debuts from the bench as Wales beat Scotland 1-0 in a friendly in Kilmarnock. Paul Jones was winning his only cap as a Stockport County player, while Lee Jones made his only appearance as a red. Leeds United’s Gary McAllister skippered the Scots, while ex-red Dean Saunders also played. Future red Milan Baroš played for the Czech Republic Under-15’s on the same day. Reds defenders in and out 1992 - Dominic Matteo signed on as a professional at Anfield. He went on to play 155 times for the reds, scoring just twice, before joining Leeds United for £4m in August 2000. 1999 - Rob Jones was released after failing in his latest comeback from serious injury. He had made 243 first-team appearances, despite suffering a succession of injuries, without once hitting the back of the net. Irish glory 1986 - The Republic of Ireland won the Icelandic Triangular Tournament, their first senior prize. This was a result of their 1-0 defeat of Czechoslovakia in Reykjavik, with ex-red Michael Robinson winning his 24th and final cap, and future reds John Aldridge and Ray Houghton also in the team. Happy birthdays 1980 - Ex-reserves keeper Ian Dunbavin was born in Knowsley. He joined Shrewsbury Town on a free transfer in January 2000, but moved on to Halifax Town in July 2004 after 115 games for the Shrews. 1979 - Andy Parkinson, who was also in the victorious FA Youth Cup squad in 1996, was born in Liverpool. He failed to break through to our first team, later finding greater success with Tranmere Rovers. First and last caps 2004 - Ex-red Christian Ziege won his 72nd and final cap for Germany in their 7-0 friendly trouncing of Malta in Freiberg, with Dietmar Hamann also featuring. Future red Robbie Keane won his fiftieth cap as the Republic of Ireland beat Romania 1-0 in a friendly at Lansdowne Road, while future reds Sporting Director Richard Hughes debuted for Scotland as they won a friendly 1-0 in Estonia. More youngsters in action 2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez played for Uruguay Under-20’s as they beat Honduras 2-0 in a World Championship Finals group game in Poland. 2009 - Danny Wilson captained Scotland Under-19’s for the first time as they beat Slovakia 2-1 in a European Championships Finals group game at Bramall Lane, with Martin Kelly also in action for England in the same tournament that day in Doncaster. 2005 – Future red Besian Idrizaj represented Austria Under-19’s in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying defeat by Slovakia. 2000 - Jamie Carragher conceded a penalty from which Italy scored while playing for England Under-21’s in the European Championship Finals in Slovakia. Danny Murphy and David Thompson also featured in the 2-0 defeat. 1991 – Future red David James featured for England Under-21’s in their 2-1 defeat of Senegal in the Toulon Tournament. Supersub’s night 1977 - One of Anfield’s greatest ever nights took place as ‘les verts’ of Saint-Étienne arrived with a 1-0 first-leg lead in the European Cup Quarter-final. We eventually won 3-1 on the night, with David Fairclough grabbing the crucial third after Kevin Keegan’s early speculative long-distance strike from a corner had been cancelled out by Dominique Bathenay’s second-half thirty-yard thunderbolt. Ray Kennedy gave us the lead on the night, but we still trailed on aggregate before Supersub’s late winner. 1983 - We beat Widzew Lódz 3-2 in L4 at the same stage, with Ian Rush and David Hodgson adding to a Phil Neal penalty. Unfortunately, we went out 4-3 on aggregate. Thumping the Mancs 2014 - We ran out easy 3-0 winners against David Moyes’ side at Old Trafford, with Steven Gerrard converting penalties either side of half time before hitting the post with a third. Nemanja Vidić was sent off for Manchester United, his fourth dismissal against the reds. Luis Suárez added a late third goal. Debutants galore 1970 - Roy Evans made his first reds appearance, nearly five years into his Anfield career. Roy told the Liverpool Echo, “When I told my mum I was in the team, she was so surprised she couldn’t eat her tea.” Chris Lawler, Ron Yeats and Bobby Graham netted as we beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-0, with future red Jack Whitham stretchered off while playing for Wednesday. 1968 - Left-back Peter ‘Max’ Wall made his debut in our 3-2 home League win over Burnley, the first of only 42 appearances for the reds. Tony Hateley bagged a brace, with Geoff Strong also on the scoresheet as Ralph Coates struck two of his four goals against the reds. 1925 - Fred Baron debuted in our 1-0 top-flight win at Sheffield United, when Danny Shone nabbed our goal as forward Dick Forshaw played his 200th League game for the reds and winger Cyril Gilhespy turned out for the nineteenth and last time. 1946 - We also faced the Blades in a Wartime League match at Anfield, going down 3-0. Recent matches 2002 - Vladimír Šmicer made his hundredth reds appearance in our 2-1 win at Middlesbrough that briefly sent us back to the top of the table, thanks to goals from Emile Heskey and John Arne Riise. 2003 - Michael Owen, Emile Heskey and Steven Gerrard all netted at Tottenham Hotspur as we came from behind to win 3-2. Teddy Sheringham struck the last of his seven goals past us, with Mauricio Tarrico also on target. 2005 - We were held to a frustrating goalless draw at Anfield by Blackburn Rovers. 2013 – We lost 3-1 at Southampton, when Philippe Coutinho scored our goal. Joe Allen had to be replaced at half time as he ended his season early. Morgan Schneiderlin, future red Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez all netted for the Saints, the latter with the first of his four goals past us to date. 2015 – Jordan Henderson grabbed the only goal of our trip to Swansea City’s Liberty Stadium. Spurs take their time 1912 - Tottenham Hotspur won 2-1 at Anfield when Billy Lacey netted our consolation, the first of his 29 reds strikes. Ernie Newman and Tom Mason struck for the visitors. 1985 - That was the last time they won at Anfield in the League until they repeated the feat thanks to Garth Crooks scoring the only goal of the game, one of his four past us. 1971 - We also played Spurs, winning a Sixth Round FA Cup replay at White Hart Lane on our way to Wembley, thanks to a Steve Heighway goal. Two ton Stevie 1974 – Steve Heighway played his 200th reds game, scoring the only goal of our League meeting with Leeds United at Anfield. Setting an unbeaten record 1988 - Craig Johnston scored in our 1-1 draw at Derby County, a game postponed from two months earlier. This was our 31st consecutive undefeated League match, then a League record. However, we lost our next League match, 1-0 at Goodison. What a goal! 1984 - Danny Wallace struck a brace that included a spectacular overhead kick as we lost 2-0 at Southampton. It was later named ‘Goal of the Season’ by the BBC’s Match Of The Day. Triple centurions 1996 – Robbie Fowler played his hundredth League game, netting as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield with Mark Wright also on target as Roy Evans reached a century of League games in charge and Michael Thomas played his hundredth game for the club. Births and death 1922 – Outside-right Billy Watkinson was born in Prescot. He signed from Prescot Cables in February 1946, scoring twice in 24 reds games before moving on to Accrington Stanley in January 1951. 1964 – Jörg Schmadtke was born in Düsseldorf. He was appointed Sporting Director in May 2023, after having held similar roles in Germany. 2006 – Defender George Whitworth died. He signed from Stanton Ironworks in February 1950, but only made nine appearances in his three years at Anfield, standing in for Phil Taylor. A fair old thumping 1893 - We trounced Fairfield 5-0 in a Lancashire League meeting, with John Miller netting twice and Hugh McQueen and Tom Wyllie also on the scoresheet, as we also benefited from an own goal. Gunners again 1963 - We won an FA Cup Fifth Round tie 2-1 at Highbury thanks to a Jimmy Melia strike and a penalty from Ronnie Moran, which came a week after our previous game, a 2-2 top-flight draw at the same venue. We made it as far as the Semi-final that year, before losing out to Leicester City. 2022 – We won 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium, with Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino both on target after the break. Disappointment against the Mancs 1895 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by Newton Heath, as Manchester United were then known, in a Palatine League game at Anfield. Hugh McQueen netted our goal. 1940 – We lost a Wartime League encounter 1-0 at Old Trafford. On target 2016 – Ben Woodburn scored his only goal for Wales Under-17’s in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying win in Croatia. Heading out 1949 – South African winger Bob Priday moved on to Blackburn Rovers. His chances had been limited to forty reds games after he made the switch from Cape Town City in December 1945, as he was behind Billy Liddell in the pecking order. He notched seven times while at Anfield. 1961 – Scottish inside-forward Jimmy Harrower was sold to Newcastle United. He had signed from Hibernian for £11,000 in January 1958 and bagged 22 goals in 105 reds games. 2007 - Two reserves moved on loan to Championship sides. Lee Peltier joined Hull City, while Besian Idrizaj signed on for Luton Town. They both turned out seven times for their temporary employers before returning to Anfield. On the same day, it was announced that Gary Mackay-Steven had agreed to join from Ross County in the summer. Charnock signs on 1992 - Midfielder Phil Charnock signed on as a professional. He only made two senior appearances, including his debut against Apollon Limassol in September 1992 when he became our youngest ever European player. 1993 – He signed a new contract with the reds. Billy misses out 1954 – We played in a testimonial match for Carlisle United favourite Billy Hogan at their Brunton Park ground. The game ended 3-3, with our goals coming from Jimmy Melia, Phil Taylor and a William Pringle penalty. Unfortunately, Hogan could not play in the game as he missed his train and was stranded at home! Other reds games 1991 – We beat Sunderland 2-1 at Anfield despite falling behind. Ian Rush levelled the scores before Gary Owers deflected a Peter Beardsley shot into his own net. 1957 – We won a Second Division fixture 2-1 at Port Vale as Tony Rowley scored two headers. 1935 – We lost 5-3 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Billy Wrigglesworth struck twice with Bob Iverson also scoring and Gordon Hodgson converting a penalty as we went in 3-1 down at the break. Iverson and future red Billy Hartill struck for the home side in the second half, as did Alf Hanson and Vic Wright for the reds. 1929 – Birmingham City held us to a goalless draw at St. Andrews. 1907 – We lost 3-1 at Preston North End with Jack Cox bagging our late consolation. 1901 – Andy McGuigan and John ‘Sailor’ Hunter struck as we beat Aston Villa 2-0 at Villa Park. Beaten by the rest 1932 – Future reds Ernie Blenkinsop and Tosh Johnson featured as England lost 4-1 to The Rest in a trial match in Huddersfield. Also on the move 1989 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined basement side Darlington from Carlisle United for £10,000. He had played 36 times for the Cumbrians. 2005 - Former Under-13’s Coach Mike Sheron joined Shrewsbury Town from Macclesfield Town on a free transfer, netting twice in seven outings for his final League club as a player. For Britain 1908 – George Latham and Maurice Parry both played for Wales as they were thrashed 7-1 by England in the British International Championships in Wrexham. 1914 – Ex-red Sam Hardy was in the England goal as they beat Wales 2-0 in the same competition in Cardiff.
