Dan the man 1989 – Forward Daniel Sturridge was born in Birmingham. He signed from Chelsea for £12m in January 2013, netting an impressive 67 times in 160 reds games before being released in June 2019. 2013 – He scored the only goal of David Moyes’ Manchester United’s League visit to Anfield in just the fourth minute. 1993 – Ex-reds left-back Jack Robinson was born in Warrington. He became the club’s then youngest ever player when he debuted at Hull City in May 2010 aged just sixteen years and 250 days. He was sold to Queens Park Rangers in August 2014, scoring twice in 39 outings before moving on to Nottingham Forest in June 2018. 2006 – Midfielder Afolami Onanuga was born. He joined the reds as an Under-11, turning pro in November 2023. The very beginning 1892 - We played our first ever game, beating reigning Midland League champions Rotherham Town 7-1 in a friendly that kicked off at Anfield at 5.30pm on a Thursday evening. 1894 - We played our first ever First Division game, drawing 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Harry Bradshaw putting the reds in front before Coombe Hall equalised for the home side. Unfortunately, we were relegated at the end of the season. Outside-left John Drummond played the first of eighteen senior reds games, with keeper Bill McCann making the first of his seventeen outings. Rams hit for six 2007 - Ryan Babel scored his first reds goal as we thumped Derby County 6-0 at Anfield to go into the international break on top of the table for the first time in five seasons. Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres each bagged a brace, with Andriy Voronin also on target. Birth of the Kop 1906 - Joe Hewitt bagged the only goal of our game against Stoke at Anfield as the Kop stand was used for the first time, in scorching temperatures, although it was not yet known by that name. After the previous season’s title success, the board had decided to demolish what was known as the Oakfield Road Embankment, or Walton Breck Road End, and replace it with a huge bank of rubble and cinders. Germany 1 Liverpool 5 2001 - All of England's goals in their sensational 5-1 win over Germany in Munich were scored by reds. Michael Owen grabbed a hat-trick, with Steven Gerrard nabbing his first international goal and Emile Heskey also on target. Dietmar Hamann was on the losing side, while Nick Barmby, Jamie Carragher and ex-red Steve McManaman all also appeared. Meanwhile, future reds forward Fernando Morientes bagged a brace as Spain beat Austria 4-0 in their qualifying encounter in Valencia. 2007 – Future red Mamadou Sakho scored in the penalty shoot-out as France Under-17’s lost 5-4 to Spain in their World Championship Finals Quarter-final after the game itself ended 1-1 in South Korea. 2000 – Future reds recruiter Mark Burchill netted for Scotland Under-21’s in their 3-1 European Championships qualifying win in Latvia. On the same day, Richie Partridge and future reds Milan Baroš and John Arne Riise all featured in qualifiers at the same level, with Riise the only one to be on the winning side as Norway beat Armenia 5-1. Keeping debuts 1904 - Ned Doig became our oldest ever debutant, aged 37 years and 307 days, when he played in our 2-0 opening day home defeat of Burton United in the Second Division, thanks to a Robbie Robinson brace. Half-back Jimmy Hughes and left-back David Murray both also played their first reds games. 1912 - Elisha Scott signed for the reds. He played 468 times in eighteen seasons at Anfield, winning two League titles before joining Belfast Celtic as Player/Manager in June 1934. Crossing the park 1962 - Winger Johnny Morrissey was sold to Everton for £10,000. He had signed on as a professional in April 1957, netting six times in 37 reds games. He scored fifty goals in 314 appearances for the Blues, helping them to two League titles. Facing the Foxes 2018 – New keeper Alisson Becker was robbed while trying to play out from the back leading to Rachid Ghezzal’s consolation as we won 2-1 at Leicester City. Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino had both struck before the break to give us a two-goal lead. James Milner reached a century of League games for the reds. 1973 – We drew a top-flight encounter 1-1 at Filbert Street. John Toshack headed us into the lead after the break, but Alan Birchenall equalised with the last of his four goals against us. Red arrivals 1910 - William Stuart signed from Bolton Wanderers. He scored once in five outings, moving on to Wrexham in 1912. 1994 - Phil Babb signed from Coventry City for a club record £3.6m, also a British record fee for a defender. He struck once in 170 reds appearances in his six years at Anfield, before being released on a free transfer to Sporting Clube de Portugal. 2008 - Right-back Steve Finnan moved in the opposite direction, after one goal in 217 appearances since signing from Fulham for £3.5m in July 2003. On the same day, second string keeper Péter Gulácsi signed permanently from MTK Hungária, having spent the previous season on loan at Anfield. Meanwhile, Andriy Voronin joined Hertha BSC Berlin on loan for the season, while young Brazilian forward Vitor Flora arrived from Botafogo on a free transfer. Red centurions 1971 – Full-back Chris Lawler played his 300th League game for the reds in our 1-0 defeat at Manchester City. 1959 – We lost a Second Division game 1-0 at Bristol City, with centre-half Dick White reaching a century of League outings for the club. Deadline day moves 2014 – Centre-half Sebastián Coates joined Sunderland on loan, having failed to break through to the first team. On the same day, winger Oussama Assaidi returned to Stoke City on a temporary basis, while Hungarian forward Krisztián Adorján left Anfield to sign for Italian Serie C side Novara Calcio. Meanwhile, forward Nathan Eccleston signed for Partick Thistle, having been released by Blackpool, John Arne Riise joined APOEL in Cyprus, Swedish left-winger Alexander Kačaniklić joined F.C. København on loan from Fulham, and forward David N’Gog returned to France on loan from Bolton Wanderers with Stade de Reims. On the same day, winger Sadio Mané joined Southampton from Red Bull Salzburg for £11.8m after 45 goals in 87 games. 2015 – Centre-half Tiago Ilori joined Aston Villa on loan, failing to make a senior appearance before being recalled four months later. On the same day, winger Victor Moses made a temporary switch to West Ham United from Chelsea, netting twice in 26 outings in east London. 2022 – A host of young reds forwards moved off on loan, with Jack Bearne joining Kidderminster Harriers, Paul Glatzel returning to Tranmere Rovers, Fidel O’Rourke heading to Caernarfon Town and Max Woltman moving to Doncaster Rovers. On the same day, Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo arrived for the season from Juventus for €4.5m, only playing one game in his time at Anfield. Meanwhile, ex-reds midfielder Adam Phillips joined Barnsley from Burnley, with defender Martin Kelly signing for West Bromwich Albion. 2023 – Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch arrived for a reported €40m from Bayern München, netting four times in 38 outings in his first season, already helping us to claim the League Cup. Three youngsters left the club on loan as midfielder Tyler Morton moved to Hull City, left-back James Norris joined Tranmere Rovers and midfielder Luca Stephenson headed to Barrow as midfielder Bobby Clark signed a new contract with the reds. On the same day, centre-forward Andy Carroll joined French side Amiens SC on a free transfer from Reading while keeper Dean Bouzanis also left the Royals, re-joining Sutton United. Divock Origi moved to Nottingham Forest on loan from AC Milan, while Liam Millar joined Preston North End from Basel on a temporary basis. Farewell Welfare 1966 – Forward Harry Welfare died in Angra dos Reis, Brazil. He joined the reds from Northern Nomads in 1912, notching once in four outings before signing for Wrexham the following year. He later had a very successful career in Brazil, helping Fluminense to claim the title three times in succession while bagging 163 goals in just 166 games. 1933 – Scottish outside-right Danny McRorie joined Millwall on trial, moving on permanently to Rochdale a month later. He had bagged six goals in 35 reds games after signing from Morton for £1,500 in November 1930. Starting and ending 1900 - Right-back Tom Robertson made his reds bow as we beat Blackburn Rovers 3-0 at Anfield in another season opener. Tommy Robertson, Charlie Satterthwaite and Sam Raybould struck the goals as Alex Raisbeck captained the side at the age of just 21 years and 249 years, remaining the club’s youngest ever captain until Curtis Jones in February 2020. 1937 – Forward Ted Harston scored his final two reds goals in our 3-2 home defeat of Portsmouth. Berry Nieuwenhuys also struck for the reds, with Jock Anderson bagging the first two of his four goals past us. 1951 – Inside-forward Willie Fagan played his 182nd and final reds game as we beat Huddersfield Town 2-1 in a First Division fixture at Anfield. Billy Liddell and Kevin Baron struck our goals, while Vic Metcalfe netted one of his six strikes against the reds. Centre-backs off the mark against the Saints 1979 - Colin Irwin scored his first senior reds goal, although it was not enough to prevent us going down to a 3-2 League defeat at The Dell, with David Johnson grabbing our other goal. Charlie George scored the last of his five goals past us, with Phil Boyer and Trevor Hebberd also on target for the home side. 1992 - Mark Wright struck his first reds goal, in a 1-1 draw at home to his former club Southampton after Kerry Dixon had put the visitors in front with his seventh and final goal against the reds. UEFA President Lennart Johansson officially opened the Centenary Stand prior to the game. 1993 - Phil Babb scored his first Coventry City goal in their 1-0 defeat of the reds at Highfield Road, as Rob Jones was sent off for receiving two yellow cards in the space of three minutes. David Burrows played his 193rd and final reds game, against one of his future employers. Hat-tricks against We conceded three hat-tricks on this day in the 1930’s. 1930 - Vic Watson netted the last four of his nine goals past us as we were crushed 7-0 at West Ham United in a game that kicked off at 6pm. Stan Earle grabbed the final two of his four strikes against the reds, with Wilfred James also scoring as keeper Arthur Riley reached a century of reds outings. 1934 - Ted Drake and Ray Bowden both grabbed trebles as we were humbled 8-1 at Arsenal who were on their way to a third consecutive League title, with outside-left Alf Hanson grabbing our consolation and Drake having another effort ruled out for a push. Cliff Bastin scored the final goal of his four against us, with Jack Crayston also netting. 1919 - We also faced the Gunners, when Harry Chambers and Fred Pagnam scored in a 3-2 home defeat. Bert White bagged a brace, with Billy Blyth also netting for the visitors. Alou and goodbye 2003 - Alou Diarra joined Bastia on loan. He eventually left Anfield permanently to join Racing Club de Lens for £2m in June 2005, without ever playing a first-class reds game. 2016 - Diarra had his contract with Charlton Athletic terminated by mutual consent after one goal in 45 outings, signing for AS Nancy-Lorraine on the same day. In Midlands action We have faced Aston Villa three times on this day in history. 1908 - We kicked off the season by beating the Villains 3-2 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Robbie Robinson and Joe Hewitt and a Tom Chorlton penalty. 1990 - Peter Beardsley and John Barnes netted in our 2-1 home victory, with David Platt on target for the visitors. 1928 – Left-half Jimmy McDougall scored his first reds goal as we lost 3-1 at Villa Park. Up against the Blades We twice faced Sheffield United on this day in the 1960’s, without conceding a goal. 1962 - Ian Callaghan and Ian St. John struck as we won 2-0 at Anfield. 1965 - We left Bramall Lane with a goalless draw. More season openers We have started our top-flight seasons on two more occasions on this day in history. 1896 - George Allan struck twice as we won 2-1 at The Wednesday in Tom Watson’s first game as Manager, and first game in a new kit of red shirts and white shorts. Right-half John McCartney reached a century of reds appearances in this game. 1913 - Tom Miller was on target following a fine dribble to open the scoring in our 1-1 draw at Derby County, with half-back Tommy Fairfoul making his reds bow. Horace Barnes struck one of his nine goals past us. Happy birthday Michael 1974 – Former reserves keeper Michael Stensgaard was born in Copenhagen. The Dane was signed by Roy Evans but never played a first team game for the reds, despite being named on the bench 28 times. Derby stalemate 1897 - We benefited from a Peter Meecham own goal as our Goodison Park friendly ended 1-1. First and last caps 2021 – Gini Wijnaldum won his first cap as a Paris Saint-Germain player as the Netherlands drew a World Cup qualifier 1-1 with Norway in Oslo, with Virgil van Dijk skippering the side and future red Cody Gakpo also featuring. On the same day, Harry Wilson played for Wales for the first time since joining Fulham, having a penalty saved as they drew a friendly 0-0 with Finland in Helsinki. Future red Melkamu Frauendorf debuted for Germany Under-18’s in their 2-09 defeat of Slovakia. Sadio Mané netted as Senegal beat Togo 2-0 in the World Cup while Andy Robertson captained Steve Clarke’s Scotland as they lost a qualifier 2-0 in Denmark. Diogo Jota, Naby Keïta, Kostas Tsimikas, Ben Woodburn and ex-reds Dejan Lovren and Danny Ward also played for their countries. 2017 – Future red Dominik Szoboszlai debuted for Hungary Under-21’s as they won a friendly 2-1 in Germany. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain played for England for the first time since moving to Anfield, in their 4-0 World Cup qualifying win in Malta. Meanwhile, Andy Robertson won his first cap as a reds player, scoring in Scotland’s 3-0 win in Lithuania, with Dominic Solanke playing for England Under-21’s for the first time since moving to Anfield and Rhian Brewster winning his only England Under-18’s cap. Ex-reds loanee Victor Moses scored as Nigeria thumped Cameroon 4-0 in Uyo, while Emre Can, Joe Gomez, Jordan Henderson, future reds Federico Chiesa and Kostas Tsimikas, and ex-reds Raheem Sterling and Luis Suárez were also in international action that day. 2006 - Daniel Agger won his first cap as a red in Denmark’s 4-2 friendly win over Portugal in Copenhagen, with Christian Poulsen playing for his country for the first time since joining Sevilla. On the same day, Florent Sinama-Pongolle made his first appearance for France Under-21’s while on loan at Real Club Recreativo de Huelva, as they beat Scotland 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Pittodrie, with future red Charlie Adam winning his third and final cap at this level. Future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-21’s on the same day, in a 1-0 qualifying victory in Iceland, with a player being sent off for each side. 1982 – Jan Mølby won his second cap, and first one as an Ajax player, as Denmark lost 1-0 to Romania in a friendly in Bucharest. 2016 – Trent Alexander-Arnold debuted for England Under-19’s in their 1-1 friendly draw with the Netherlands in Wellington, Shropshire. Philippe Coutinho, Divock Origi, future reds Thiago Alcântara and Federico Chiesa, and ex-reds Javier Mascherano, Brad Smith and Luis Suárez all featured for their countries, with keeper Alisson Becker winning his first cap as a Roma player. Future red Christian Benteke scored as Belgium Under-21’s lost a qualifier 2-1 in Iceland. On the same day, Péter Gulácsi skippered Hungary Under-21’s as they lost another qualifier 2-1 in the Republic of Ireland. 1999 - Mark Kennedy won his first cap as a Manchester City player, with Robbie Keane making his first appearance while with Coventry City. Both netted as the Republic of Ireland beat FR Yugoslavia 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Lansdowne Road. Steve Staunton also played. 1996 - Nick Barmby won his final cap while with Middlesbrough, scoring as England won a World Cup qualifier 3-0 in Moldova. Stig Inge Bjørnebye, future reds Sami Hyypiä, Paul Ince and Øyvind Leonhardsen and ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal also represented their countries that day. Other international reds 2001 - Don Hutchison won his first cap as a West Ham United player as Scotland were held to a goalless draw by Croatia at Hampden Park. Igor Bišcan won his fifteenth and final cap in this game with ex-red Dominic Matteo also featuring. Jerzy Dudek won his first cap as a red in Poland’s 3-0 defeat of Norway in Chorzów, with Everton’s Thomas Myhre at the other end, the first time two Merseyside keepers had been in international opposition since May 1979. John Arne Riise and ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen both also played. Meanwhile, Jason McAteer netted the only goal of the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifying defeat of the Netherlands at Lansdowne Road. Also in international action that day were Sami Hyypiä, Jari Litmanen, ex-reds Brad Friedel and Jim Magilton, and future reds Milan Baroš and Paul Jones. 1985 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played for Brazil Under-20’s in their 6-0 trouncing of Colombia in their World Cup Quarter-final in Tbilisi. 1994 – Future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason played for Iceland Under-17’s as they lost 2-0 to Finland in a European Championships qualifier in Reykjavik. 2005 - Anthony Le Tallec struck as France Under-21’s beat FYR Macedonia 3-0 in a friendly in Epernay. 2013 – Future red Dominic Solanke came off the bench as England Under-17’s lost 2-1 to Italy in Burton. On the move 2005 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme re-signed for Rosenborg BK, having left Bastia earlier in the year. He retired from the game in June 2008. 2010 – Forward Mark Burchill signed for Cypriot side Enosis Neon Paralimni. He joined the reds in a recruitment role in the summer of 2024. 2017 – Keeper David Martin signed for Millwall, only making one senior appearance in his first campaign with the Lions. 2020 – Young keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle signed for Cambridge United, having been released by the reds three months earlier. On the same day, centre-half Rhys Williams signed a new contract while Chief Commercial Officer Billy Hogan took over as Chief Executive Officer. Other reds games 1984 – Queens Park Rangers held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Ronnie Whelan was on target, with Paul Walsh having two goals disallowed. 1981 – Middlesbrough left L4 with a point. David Shearer bagged one of his four goals against the reds, with Phil Neal equalising from the spot. 1956 – We beat Grimsby Town 3-2 in a home Second Division encounter. Louis Bimpson struck twice, with Alan Arnell also on target as Bob Crosbie netted a brace for the visitors. 1954 – Plymouth Argyle held us to a 3-3 draw in the Second Division at Anfield. Champagne Charlie 1953 - Graeme Souness was born in Edinburgh. He won five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after signing from Middlesbrough for £352,000 in January 1978. He moved to Sampdoria for £650,000 in June 1984 after 55 goals in 359 games. He returned to Anfield as Manager in April 1991, although his time as reds boss was considerably less successful, with just one FA Cup triumph before his departure in January 1994. 1990 - Keeper Péter Gulácsi was born in Budapest. He joined on loan from MTK Hungária in August 2007, signing on permanently in September 2008. The young Hungarian made it into our bench 51 times but failed to feature for the first team before joining Red Bull Salzburg in June 2013. 1994 – Another young custodian, Tyrell Belford, was born in Nuneaton. He arrived from Coventry City in the summer of 2009, aged just fifteen. He signed on professionally in July 2011 but moved to Swindon Town on a free transfer two years later after falling behind Gulácsi and Danny Ward in the pecking order. 2004 – Forward Oakley Cannonier was born in Leeds. He joined the reds at Under-12’s level, signing pro terms in July 2021 and then a new deal in August 2022. His most significant impact to date remains as the ball-boy who quickly handed the ball to Trent Alexander-Arnold for his “corner taken quickly” against Barcelona in our UEFA Champions League Semi-final second leg in May 2019. The first sighting of Saint Michael 1997 - Michael Owen netted on his reds debut, becoming our youngest ever scorer aged seventeen years and 144 days. He had come on as a substitute for Patrik Berger less than twenty minutes previously in our 2-1 defeat by Wimbledon at Selhurst Park, nabbing our consolation after a Jason Euell goal and one of Dean Holdsworth’s four strikes past the reds. 2006 - He became a father for the second time, to his first son, named James Michael. Missing out on the League 1991 - Our 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest handed the League title to Arsenal, their second in three seasons. Nigel Clough scored the opener with Jan Mølby netting our equaliser from the spot, while David Burrows was playing his hundredth game for the reds. Ian Woan bagged the winner. This game was postponed from the previous December. 1998 - We hosted the Gunners at Anfield after they had already clinched the League title, their first since that 1991 triumph. We thumped them 4-0, with Paul Ince bagging a brace, and Michael Owen and Øyvind Leonhardsen also on the scoresheet. Owen also had a penalty saved by Arsenal keeper Alex Manninger after Matthew Upson had fouled Steve McManaman. Tons up 2023 – Mohamed Salah reached a century of Anfield goals, the only strike of Brentford’s League visit, as he netted for a club record ninth consecutive home game. Meanwhile, Alisson Becker kept his hundredth clean sheet for the club. 1995 – Keeper David James reached a century of reds games in our 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa, with Dwight Yorke netting two of his eight strikes against us. Red endings 1939 – We lost 2-0 at Manchester United in front of just 12,073 spectators. Johnny Hanlon bagged a brace as we ended the season in eleventh. This game saw the final official appearances of right-half Matt Busby, right-back Tommy Cooper, left-half Jimmy McInnes, keeper Arthur Riley, defender Fred Rogers and winger Harman van den Berg. 1996 - Phil Neal’s son Ashley played his final reserves game. Reaching a super cup final 1986 - Kevin MacDonald netted his fifth and last reds goal with Craig Johnston also scoring as we came from behind to beat Norwich City 3-1 at Anfield in the Semi-final second leg of the Screen Sport Super Cup, with Gary Brooke on target for the visitors. Jan Mølby added a penalty as we went through 4-2 on aggregate, with Sammy Lee playing his 295th and last reds game. The reds were presented with the League title prior to this game. The Final against Everton was held over until the following season - which we won, of course. Big wins We have twice won top-flight fixtures 4-1 on this day in history. 1922 - We beat West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns, with a Harry Beadles brace, his final reds strikes, and goals from Dick Forshaw and Jock McNab. Stan Davies struck one of his four goals past us. 1933 - Sheffield Wednesday lost at Anfield, centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw put through his own net with Gordon Hodgson and Dave Wright both striking twice, as we finished the season in thirteenth position. Also recently 2018 – We lost at Chelsea as Olivier Giroud headed in the only goal, one of his seven past us to date, as we stuttered towards a top-four finish in the League. Births and death 1971 - Former reserve keeper Jørgen Nielsen was born in Nykøbing Falster. The Dane never played a senior reds game, but he did sit on the bench 55 times following his £400,000 capture from Hvidovre in August 1997. 1969 - Another former reserve, midfielder Jim Magilton, was born in Belfast. He later had a successful career with Oxford United, Southampton and Ipswich Town before moving into management. 1915 - Tom Watson died. He had been appointed as reds boss in July 1896, doubling his salary to £300 a year from his time at Sunderland, whom he had led to three League titles and three FA Cup Semi-finals in four seasons. He went beyond the remit of Club Secretary at Anfield, involving himself in team selection, tactics and player recruitment, so becoming a Manager in all but name. He led the reds to two League titles and the Second Division championship and our first ever FA Cup Final, remaining in charge until his death. Firsts for Scotland 1959 - Motherwell’s Ian St. John won his first full international cap as Scotland beat West Germany 3-2 at Hampden Park. The Scots were managed by Andy Beattie, who had guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 1966 – Future red Kenny Dalglish made his first international appearance, bagging a brace as the Under-15’s won 4-3 in Northern Ireland. New ground approved 2008 – The revised design for the club’s new stadium in Stanley Park was granted planning permission by Liverpool City Council. He led them to the Conference title in his first season, and then mid-table Third Division safety in the next two years. 2004 - Steve McMahon resigned as Blackpool boss, with fellow ex-red Mark Seagraves dismissed as Assistant Manager on the same day. McMahon had guided the Seasiders to 102 wins in his 350 games in charge, leading them back out of the basement in his first full season, and mid-table security in his following three seasons. Signing on and off 2022 – Ex-reds reserves midfielder Conor Thomas was released by Cheltenham Town after twenty goals in 146 games since arriving in May 2018. 2017 – Scottish centre-back George Johnston signed professional terms with the reds. He moved on to Feyenoord in August 2019 after featuring in one pre-season friendly. 2011 – Midfielder Jay Spearing signed a new contract. He played 55 senior reds games without notching, moving on to Bolton Wanderers in August 2013 after a season-long loan there. 1992 - Future reds winger Mark Kennedy signed as a professional for Millwall. He went on to net twelve times in 54 games for the Lions, before moving to Anfield three years later. 1903 – Scottish inside-right George Livingstone was sold to Manchester City. He had signed from Celtic in May 1902 and bagged four goals in 32 games the following season. He went on to help City to claim the FA Cup in 1904. He notched thirteen times in 477 games for the reds, many as skipper, as we won two European Cups, seven League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media. 1906 - Forward Harry Barkas was born in Wardley Colliery. He only played five reds games, all in the First Division, after arriving for £1,500 from Gateshead in December 1930, returning there in 1932. Martin’s bow 2008 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel made his reds debut as a substitute for the injured Álvaro Arbeloa in our 2-2 home draw with Aston Villa, our fourth successive tie in the League. Other birthdays 1961 - Former reserves forward Colin Russell was born in Liverpool. He only ever tasted half an hour of first team action for the reds, coming on for Howard Gayle in a home League defeat to Sunderland in May 1981. He left for Huddersfield Town in 1982. 1904 - Scottish international right-half Tom Morrison was born in Coylton, Ayrshire. He signed from St. Mirren in February 1928 for £4,000 and struck four times in 254 reds games. He failed to win any honours during his spell at Anfield but had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren before joining the reds. He was a member of the Sunderland team that won the League title in 1936, having moved to Wearside in November 1935. On the same day, Jari Litmanen was making his 99th appearance for Finland as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia in a tournament in Riyadh, in what was Roy Hodgson’s first game in charge of the Finns. 2010 – Song also represented his country, as they drew 2-2 with Tunisia in a MTN Africa Cup of Nations group game in Angola. 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah played for Egypt as they beat Uganda 1-0 in a group game in Gabon. He signed from Crewe Alexandra for £12,000 in September 1970 but only ever made two first-team appearances before moving to Rochdale in June 1973. His career never really took off, and he retired from the game aged 23. 1898 – Inside-forward Billy McDevitt was born in Belfast. He signed from Swansea Town in 1923, being converted into a centre-half, but played just four times before moving on to Exeter City for a club record fee in May 1925. Curtis off the mark 2020 – Curtis Jones bagged his first reds strike, the only goal of our FA Cup Third Round encounter with Everton at Anfield. Left-back Yasser Larouci, forward Takumi Minamino and centre-half Nat Phillips all made their reds bows as we fielded a young side. The Latics again 2014 - We faced Oldham Athletic for the third consecutive season in the FA Cup, this time winning our Third Round tie 2-0 at Anfield. Spanish forward Iago Aspas struck his only reds goal, with James Tarkowski putting through his own net late on. Boss Brendan Rodgers’ son Anton came on as a late substitute for the visitors. Stevie’s ton up 2015 - James Shea became the hundredth different goalkeeper that Steven Gerrard scored past for the reds as we beat AFC Wimbledon 2-1 in an FA Cup Third Round tie at the Cherry Red Records Stadium. The skipper was on target either side of the break against the League Two side. Pelle signs on 2005 - Argentine centre-back Mauricio Pellegrino signed from Valencia on a free transfer. He arrived at Anfield with an impressive reputation, having previously won the Spanish League three times and the UEFA Cup, as well as appearing in two Champions League Finals. However, he rarely impressed in his thirteen reds games, and moved on to Deportivo Alavés five months later. FA Cup shocks 1957 - Half-back Johnny Wheeler scored, but it was not enough to prevent us losing 2-1 to Southend United from the Third Division South at Roots Hall in the Third Round. 1974 - Doncaster Rovers’ Brendan O’Callaghan hit the woodwork in the final minute of our Third Round tie against the Third Division side at Anfield, to keep the scores level at 2-2. Kevin Keegan bagged both our goals, with defender Dave Rylands playing his only game for the club and midfielder Trevor Storton appearing for the twelfth and last time. We won the replay 2-0 and went on to claim the trophy that season. A Cup treble 1980 - David Johnson grabbed a treble that included his fiftieth reds strike as we thumped Grimsby Town 5-0 at Anfield, with Graeme Souness and Jimmy Case also on target. The Mariners went on to claim the Third Division title that season. We fell at the Semi-final stage for the second successive season. Beating the Villains 1985 – We beat Aston Villa 3-0 in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield, with a John Wark strike sandwiched between two from Ian Rush. This was Joe Fagan’s hundredth game in charge. 1929 – We won a top-flight encounter 4-0 in L4, when Dick Edmed bagged a brace, with Bob Clark and Gordon Hodgson also on target. Villa’s Thomas Smart sent a penalty high over the bar. Red deaths 2004 - Jim Aspinall died aged 72. He had been involved in youth recruitment at Anfield for 26 years, during which time he had unearthed talents such as Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman. Fowler visited him in hospital but was minutes too late as he had already passed away. 1965 – Scottish forward Bill Salisbury died. He signed from Partick Thistle in October 1928, bagging three goals in seventeen games before joining Bangor City the following August. Out of the Cup 1991 - Glenn Hysén was sent off as we were held 1-1 by Blackburn Rovers in our FA Cup Third Round meeting at Ewood Park, with Rovers having Kevin Moran shown a red card as well. A Mark Atkins own goal with just ten seconds left on the clock took the tie to an Anfield replay, which we won 3-0 with Steve McMahon dismissed this time around. BBC pundit Jimmy Hill complained about a ball girl, sixteen-year-old Gillian Maynard, retrieving the ball so promptly in the build up to our equaliser, and was later forced to apologise. Mixed fortunes against the Hammers 1982 - We beat West Ham United 3-0 at Anfield thanks to goals from Terry McDermott, Ronnie Whelan and Kenny Dalglish as Phil Thompson played his 300th League game for the reds. 1901 - We also won in an FA Cup Supplementary Round fixture at their old Memorial Recreation Ground, with Sam Raybould grabbing the only goal of the game. We had to play in a specially arranged extra round having failed to register in time for the competition. 1924 - We lost another top-flight meeting 1-0 at Upton Park. Raven flies up 2004 - Young defender David Raven officially stepped up to Melwood. He only managed to play four times for the first team and moved on to Carlisle United in July 2006. On the same day, the AGM at Anfield was a stormy affair, with Chairman David Moores saying for the first time that he might stand down if the reds again failed to qualify for the Champions League. International firsts 1972 - Arsenal’s Ray Kennedy won his first Under-23’s cap as England beat Wales 2-0 in Swindon. John Toshack was on the losing side that day. 2011 - Keeper Brad Jones won his first cap as a reds player as Australia were held to a goalless friendly draw by the United Arab Emirates in Qatar. 1966 – Roger Hunt played for England in their 1-1 friendly draw with Poland at Goodison Park. Another reds game 1935 – Arsenal won 2-0 at Anfield, with Ted Drake opening the scoring after just two minutes, one of his six goals past us. Arthur Riley saved an Eddie Hapgood penalty, but Hapgood converted the rebound. Dicks in charge 2009 – Julian Dicks was appointed Manager of Eastern Counties League side Wivenhoe Town. However, he left the club at the end of the season by mutual consent. 2016 – Ex-reds keeper Brad Friedel was named Head Coach of the USA Under-19’s side. Baron born 1901 - Fred Baron was born in Prudhoe, Northumberland. He struck seven times in twenty games after signing from Mid-Rhondda United in February 1925, moving on to Southend United in March 1927. 1991 – Short-lived centre-half Steven Caulker was born in Feltham. He joined the reds on loan from Queens Park Rangers in January 2016, having his temporary spell at Southampton cut short to accommodate the move. He made just four reds appearances. Bert’s farewell 1971 - Bert Shelley died in Liverpool. He played 448 times for Southampton, a club record until the 1960’s. After retiring from playing, he joined George Kay’s coaching staff, following him to Anfield in August 1936. He stayed on as Trainer after Kay’s departure, working under Don Welsh and Phil Taylor until 1959 when he joined the general staff, with his duties including looking after the treatment room. He played eight times for the Bantams before joining Southend United as Player/Coach. 2012 – Future reds Assistant Manager Sean O'Driscoll was sacked as Nottingham Forest boss after just five months in charge, having led them to ten victories in 26 games. Birth and death 2006 – Future red Charlie Adam became a father to Jack. 2010 – Utility player Bill Jones died at the Countess of Chester Hospital. He signed from Hayfield St. Matthews in September 1938 and scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. His grandson Rob later represented the reds in defence on 243 occasions in the 1990’s. -
Debuting at Anfield 1998 - Steven Gerrard made his reds bow as a last-minute substitute for Vegard Heggem in our 2-0 defeat of Blackburn Rovers at Anfield, which came courtesy of goals from Michael Owen and Paul Ince. 1913 - Winger Jackie Sheldon debuted in our 2-1 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur, with Jimmy Dawson grabbing his first reds goal and Tom Miller also on target. Ken Campbell saved a penalty from Jimmy Cantrell, who struck the visitors’ goal. 2006 - Young Moroccan forward Nabil El Zhar debuted as we were held to a goalless draw at home by Portsmouth, with Jamie Carragher stepping up into central midfield as we struggled to overcome an injury crisis. 1976 - Mark Lawrenson played his first game at Anfield, nearly five years before signing for the reds. He appeared for Preston North End in an FA Cup First Round replay, as they beat Crewe Alexandra 3-0. Recent milestones 2016 – Forward Ben Woodburn became the club’s youngest ever goalscorer aged 17 years 45 days, scoring his only reds goal as we beat Leeds United 2-0 in a League Cup Quarter-final encounter at Anfield. Divock Origi had handed us the lead with just under a quarter of an hour remaining before Woodburn struck. 2017 – Emre Can reached a century of League games for the reds as we won 3-0 at Stoke City. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, with substitute Mohamed Salah adding a late brace. God has left the building 2001 - Robbie Fowler was sold to Leeds United for a reported £11m. He had notched 171 goals in 330 reds games in this first spell, and left with UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two League Cup winners’ medals from this first spell. He only played 33 times in fourteen months at Elland Road, netting fourteen times before moving on again to Manchester City. A good and bad day for Stoke 2000 - We secured our biggest ever away win, and Stoke City’s record home defeat, as we triumphed 8-0 in the Fourth Round of the Worthington Cup. 27,109 attended the game – a then record at their new Britannia Stadium. They struggled to keep up, with the scoreboard at one time flashing up 9-0! It was also a game of several firsts, as Richie Partridge and Stephen Wright both made their first-team debuts, with Markus Babbel bagging his first reds goal and Christian Ziege on target for the second and last time. Robbie Fowler grabbed a hat-trick, including a penalty, with our other goals coming from Vladimír Šmicer, Sami Hyypiä and Danny Murphy. Another derby win 2009 - We won 2-0 at Goodison, securing our third straight victory in this fixture. We opened the scoring when Joseph Yobo deflected a speculative Javier Mascherano strike past Tim Howard, with Dirk Kuyt adding a late second after Pepe Reina had pulled off a spectacular double save. A win at the Bridge 2011 – We won 2-0 at Chelsea in the Fifth Round of the League Cup, with Andy Carroll having a penalty saved. Maxi Rodríguez struck before Martin Kelly headed in his only reds goal. Lucas Leiva ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in this game, thus ruling him out for the rest of the season. Half ton doc 1980 – David Johnson scored his fiftieth League goal for the reds as we won 4-2 at Sunderland, with Sammy Lee nabbing a brace and Terry McDermott also on target. Also recently 2015 – James Milner scored from the spot to secure a 1-0 victory over Swansea City at Anfield. 2014 – Right-back Glen Johnson headed his ninth and last reds goal late on to beat Stoke City at Anfield after Rickie Lambert’s effort had rebounded off the crossbar. A change that backfired 1975 - We changed our usual routine by not staying overnight in a hotel before our game at home to Norwich City. We immediately returned to the usual routine following our 3-1 defeat, with Emlyn Hughes netting our consolation. Ex-reds reserve Ted MacDougall scored, with World Cup winner Martin Peters netted one of his fourteen strikes against the reds, and Colin Suggett bagging one of his four goals past us. This was one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered throughout the whole of the 1970’s. A century against the Gunners 1969 - Arsenal won 1-0 at Anfield in a top-flight fixture, our hundredth meeting in all competitions, including 21 when they were known as Woolwich Arsenal. Off 1980 - Reserves centre-back Dave Watson left for Norwich City for £50,000, rising to £200,000. He went on to make 256 appearances for the Canaries, leading them to the Milk Cup in 1985 and the Second Division title a year later. 2017 – Ki-Jana Hoever was dismissed for Netherlands Under-16’s as they lost 2-1 to Brazil in Florida, with fellow future red Ryan Gravenberch also featuring. Trebles for and against 1930 - Gordon Hodgson scored the seventh of his seventeen reds hat-tricks as we thumped Sheffield United 6-1 at Anfield. Inside-left Archie McPherson added a brace, while Jim Smith was also on target. Outside-right Danny McRorie made his debut in this game, as Jimmy Dunne bagged one of his eleven strikes against the reds with keeper Arthur Riley reaching a century of League outings for the reds. 1902 - We also faced the Blades in another First Division fixture, when we lost 2-0 at Bramall Lane. 1924 - Joe Bradford bagged a treble for Birmingham City in their 5-2 win at St. Andrews, three of his fifteen goals past us, with Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw on target for the away side and left-winger Billy Chalmers making his reds bow, while centre-half Walter Wadsworth made his 200th League appearance for us. Bradford remains City’s record scorer against the reds with fifteen. Percy Barton and Ernie Islip also netted for the Blues. European stalemate 1972 - We held Dynamo Berlin to a goalless draw in East Germany in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Third Round tie with the reds caught offside on eighteen occasions. We won the return 3-1 to continue towards our first European trophy. Against the Sky Blues We have entertained Coventry City twice on this day in history. 1986 - Jan Mølby netted a penalty and John Wark also struck as we won our First Division fixture 2-0, just three days after he had struck a treble of spot kicks past the Sky Blues in a Milk Cup tie also at Anfield. 1977 - David Fairclough and Phil Neal, from the spot, scored as we were held to a 2-2 draw in the Fourth Round of the League Cup. Boss Bob Paisley was presented with his OBE by the Queen at Buckingham Palace earlier that day. We won the replay three weeks later as we went all the way to our first ever Final in this competition that season. Knocked out 1995 - We lost our grip on the Coca-Cola Cup when future Blue Steve Watson grabbed the only goal of the game late on for Newcastle United in our Fourth Round tie at Anfield. Signing on 1994 - Keeper Mark Prudhoe signed on loan from Stoke City. He never made our first team but sat on our bench eight times. He is now working as a coach in Sunderland’s Academy. 1963 – Keeper Billy Molyneux signed as a professional. He played just one senior game as Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers in April 1965, which came only five days before the FA Cup Final. International goalscorers 1961 - Ian St. John bagged a brace in Scotland’s 4-2 extra-time World Cup play-off defeat by Czechoslovakia played at the Stade du Heysel in Brussels. 1994 - Ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal netted in Israel’s 4-3 friendly defeat of Cyprus in Jerusalem. 1997 - Future red Harry Kewell struck as Australia drew 2-2 with Iran in a World Cup play-off in Melbourne, which meant that they missed out on the World Cup in France on the away goals rule. 2007 – Future red Jonjo Shelvey netted for England Under-16’s in the Sky Sports Victory Shield as they beat Scotland 2-1 in Falkirk. He actually struck in all three games as England claimed the trophy. 2022 – Future red Cody Gakpo scored in his third consecutive game for the Netherlands, his last goal as a PSV Eindhoven player as they beat host nation Qatar 2-0 in a World Cup Finals group game, with Virgil van Dijk captaining the side. On the same day, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson faced ex-reds Joe Allen, Danny Ward, Neco Williams and Harry Wilson as England beat Wales 3-0. Zak Whitbread played in the USA’s 3-1 defeat of Paraguay, Darren Potter appeared as the Republic of Ireland beat Saudi Arabia 2-1, and John Welsh and future reds Andy Lonergan, James Milner and Gary O’Neil all featured in England’s 1-0 defeat by Japan. 2012 – Jordan Rossiter captained England Under-16’s as their 1-0 defeat of Scotland in Burton saw them win the Victory Shield for the twelfth consecutive year, with future red Joe Gomez also featuring. 2018 – Future red Mateusz Musiałowski won his fourth and last cap for Poland Under-16’s in their 4-0 defeat of Northern Ireland. 2017 – Fulham’s Fábio Carvalho played for England Under-16’s as they beat the USA 1-0 in Florida, with Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax featuring as the Netherlands lost 2-1 to Brazil in Florida at the same level. Kenny Dalglish won his sixtieth cap as Scotland won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Portugal, while ex-red Joey Jones made his twentieth appearance as Wales beat Turkey 1-0 in another qualifier at his home ground in Wrexham. Treble from the spot 1986 - Jan Mølby scored a hat-trick of penalties at Anfield past ex-red Steve Ogrizovic in our 3-1 League Cup Fourth Round replay defeat of Coventry City. This is reputedly the first reds game that current skipper Steven Gerrard attended. Rafa’s record 2008 - Steven Gerrard headed the only goal of the game as we entertained Olympique de Marseille in a Champions League group game. This was Rafael Benítez’s 66th European game in charge, overtaking Bob Paisley’s club record. Happy birthdays 1915 - Post-war keeper Cyril Sidlow was born in Colwyn Bay in North Wales. He played 165 reds games after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £4,000 in February 1946, helping us claim the League title in 1947. He also played in the 1950 FA Cup Final before joining Notts County in August 1952. 1947 - Ian Ross was born in Glasgow. He signed professional terms in August 1965 and netted four times in 69 appearances spread across six seasons at Anfield. He left for Aston Villa in February 1972 for £60,000, going on to captain them to the Third Division title, as well as the League Cup in 1975. 1949 - Centre-back Trevor Storton was born in Keighley. He had struck eight times in 118 League games for Tranmere Rovers before switching to Anfield for £25,000 in July 1972. He only played twelve times in two years before joining Chester, for whom he turned out more than 400 times. Red centurions 2005 - Steven Gerrard captained the reds for the hundredth time as John Arne Riise bagged the only goal of our Premiership game at Manchester City. This was the Norwegian’s 150th League outing for the reds. 1989 – John Lukic saved a penalty from John Barnes awarded for a Lee Dixon handball. However, we still beat Arsenal 2-1 at Anfield, thanks to later goals by Steve McMahon and Barnes himself as Barry Venison reached a century of reds outings. Alan Smith struck a late consolation for the Gunners, one of his nine goals past us. 1983 - Kenny Dalglish scored his hundredth League goal for the reds as we drew 1-1 at Ipswich Town, with future red John Wark also on target. He therefore became only the second player to score a century of goals in the top flight in both England and Scotland, after Liverpool-born Joe Baker who reached this milestone for Hibernian, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest. 1921 – Danny Shone netted as we lost 3-1 at Middlesbrough, with centre-half Walter Wadsworth playing his hundredth game for the club. Double off the bench 1969 - Two reds substitutes scored in the same game for the first time. Alun Evans and Roger Hunt added to a Tommy Smith penalty, to give us a 3-2 win over Portuguese side Vitória de Setúbal in the Fairs Cup, with Geoff Strong putting through his own net. However, it was not enough to progress to the Third Round, as we went out on the new away goals rule, with the referee having to inform the players that the game was over with the players and supporters waiting around for extra time. This was Hunt’s 285th and last goal for the club while full-back Chris Lawler was playing for the reds for the 300th time. Forward Steve Peplow was making his third and last senior reds appearance. 2014 – We drew 2-2 with Ludogorets Razgrad in a Champions League group game in the Vasil Levski National Stadium, leaving us needing victory in our final home game against Basel to progress. We fell behind to a Dani Abalo goal after a Simon Mignolet error before Rickie Lambert and Jordan Henderson netted for the reds. The first followed a run from deep inside his own half, with the winner coming from the spot. Phil Neal sat on the bench for his final appearance in a reds match-day squad. Red debutants 1949 – Scottish centre-froward Sam Shields played his only goal for the club as we drew 1-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Dennis Wilshaw struck one of his seven goals against the reds, with Willie Fagan bagging our goal. 1898 – Right-back General Stevenson made his reds bow in a 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest, with Johnny Walker, Andrew McCowie and Hugh Morgan all on target. 1892 – Midfielder Philip Kelly played the first of his three reds games as we won 2-0 at Rossendale United in the Lancashire League, thanks to goals from Jim McBride and John Miller. Alun Evans, Alan Arnell, Geoff Twentyman, Alan A’Court and Jimmy Payne all scored to add to a Billy Liddell brace. 1977 - We secured another big win when we won a First Division fixture 4-0 at Leicester City, our record victory at Filbert Street. David Fairclough, Steve Heighway, Kenny Dalglish and Terry McDermott were all among the goals, with McDermott scoring our 4,000th strike in the top flight. On the way to European glory 1975 - We won 2-1 at Polish side Slask Wroclaw, with goals from Ray Kennedy and John Toshack on an icebound pitch in our UEFA Cup Third Round first leg meeting. We went all the way in the competition that season, to claim it for the second time. 2015 – We beat Girondins de Bordeaux 2-1 at Anfield in a UEFA Europa League group game, on our way to the Final at the end of the season. The visitors scored from a free-kick after keeper Simon Mignolet was penalised for holding on to the ball too long, but James Milner equalised from the spot before Christian Benteke put us in front on the stroke of half time. Red trebles 1960 - Inside-forward Jimmy Harrower bagged a treble as we beat Sheffield United 4-2 in a Second Division game at Anfield. Dave Hickson was also on the scoresheet, with Billy Russell nabbing a brace for the Blades. 1904 - Sam Raybould struck a hat-trick as we beat Millwall Athletic 5-1 in a friendly at Anfield. Robert Robinson bagged the other two goals. Ins and outs 1913 – Winger Jackie Sheldon arrived from Manchester United for £300, going on to grab twenty goals in 147 reds games, playing in our first ever FA Cup Final in 1914. He retired in 1922 after breaking his leg, with his name forever tainted by being the go-between in our match-fixing scandal with Manchester United in April 1915. 1936 – Forward John Shafto signed from Hexham. He struck seven times in twenty outings before war intervened. 1937 – Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop left the reds to join Cardiff City after playing 71 reds games without scoring, having won 26 England caps by the time he arrived from Sheffield Wednesday for £6,500 in March 1934. 1970 – Midfielder Doug Livermore moved on to Norwich City, having made just eighteen appearances. He returned to Anfield as Roy Evans’ Assistant in 1994. He left in November 1998 following Gérard Houllier taking full control. 2020 – Future reds midfielder Wataru Endō signed a new contract with VfB Stuttgart having initially joined on loan from Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging in August 2019, making the move permanent the following April. He scored fifteen times in 133 games for Die Roten in total before joining the reds for a reported €19m in August 2023. Stopping off on loan 2009 – Two reserves keepers both left the club on loan. Dean Bouzanis joined Accrington Stanley, while David Martin went to Leeds United. Bouzanis turned out nineteen times for Stanley, while Martin made just one senior appearance before returning to Anfield. 2011 – Bouzanis signed for Oldham Athletic, having been released by the reds the previous May. He played 51 times in two seasons with the Latics. 2010 – Ex-reds reserves forward Craig Lindfield joined Kidderminster Harriers on loan from Accrington Stanley, although he made just one substitute appearance for them. 1925 - Outside-left Albert Pearson joined Stockport County from Rochdale, going on to score seven goals in 72 outings for the Hatters. He had netted four times in 51 reds games after signing from Port Vale in March 1919, returning there two years later. At the World Cup 2022 – Ibrahima Konaté featured for France as they beat Denmark 2-1 in a World Cup group game in Qatar, with future red Alexis Mac Allister playing in Argentina’s 2-0 defeat of Mexico on their way to claiming the trophy for the third time. A’Court for England 1958 - Alan A’Court won his fifth and final cap for England in their 2-2 draw with Wales at Villa Park in the British International Championships. Champions 2013 – Loanee winger Victor Moses was named Nigerian Footballer of the Year. 2004 - Future reds reserves striker Michael Nardiello came off the bench as England Under-16’s were held to a goalless draw at Bloomfield Road by Scotland. He in fact scored on his 27th birthday as we drew 1-1 at Portsmouth, with Jock Anderson bagging one of his four goals against the reds as keeper Arthur Riley played his 300th League game for us. 1886 – Forward Herbert Leavey was born in Guildford. He signed from Plymouth Argyle in June 1910, only making five appearances before joining Barnsley in August 1911. Red milestones 2005 - Steven Gerrard played his 300th reds game, converting a late penalty with Xabi Alonso then also scoring as we won 2-0 at Aston Villa. 2023 – Luton Town became the reds’ fiftieth different Premier League opponent as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road. Tahith Chong put the Hatters in front late on, but Luis Díaz headed in a stoppage-time leveller. He had come off the bench, having been absent for the previous two matches while coping with his father’s kidnapping back in Colombia. First ever defeat 1892 - We registered our first ever competitive defeat as we lost 3-0 to Blackpool in the Lancashire League at their Raikes Hall Gardens ground. 1904 - We beat the Seasiders by the same score with Bobby Robinson netting a brace and Jack Parkinson also on target at Bloomfield Road. This was the sixth consecutive game in which Robinson had scored, in which time he had struck a total of ten times. Rushie back in action 1988 - Ian Rush scored his first goal since his return from Juventus as we beat newly promoted Middlesbrough 3-0 at Anfield to remain in fourth spot. John Aldridge and Peter Beardsley were also on target. 1910 - Sam Bowyer and Arthur Goddard struck as we left Ayresome Park with a top-flight point. George Elliott netted one of his eight goals against the reds, with Samuel McClure also on target. On the way to Gay Paree 1980 - We thumped Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen 4-0 at Anfield to progress to the Third Round of the European Cup 5-0 on aggregate. We scored through a Willie Miller own goal, Phil Neal, Kenny Dalglish’s header and Alan Hansen. Our next opponents were Bulgarians CSKA Sofia the following March. Most recently 2019 – Gini Wijnaldum opened the scoring as we beat Koninklijke Racing Club Genk 2-1 in a UEFA Champions League group game at Anfield. First and last 1932 - Forward Harold Taylor made the first of his 72 reds appearances as Leeds United’s Harry Duggan struck the only goal of our First Division encounter at Anfield, the first of his five goals against us. 1898 – Right-winger Bobby Marshall played his 21st and final reds game as we lost 3-0 at Newcastle United. A rare defeat 1977 - We lost one of just eleven home League games throughout the whole of the 1970’s when Aston Villa won 2-1, with the reds benefiting from a Frank Carrodus own goal. Out of Europe 1974 - We returned from Hungary with a goalless draw after our European Cup Winners’ Cup Second Round meeting with Ferencvárosi, with two penalty shouts on Ray Kennedy waved away. Hodgson for the League 1930 - Gordon Hodgson scored for the Football League in their 7-3 defeat of a Scottish League side at White Hart Lane. Launches 2009 - Jamie Carragher officially launched his charity, The 23 Foundation. It was to benefit by more than £1m from his testimonial the following year. Raheem’s bow 2009 – Future red Raheem Sterling made his debut for England Under-16’s from the bench as they beat Northern Ireland 2-0 in a Victory Shield match at the Deva Stadium. Davy struck twelve times in 33 reds games. 1879 – Inside-forward Fred Buck was born in Audley, Staffordshire. On the move 1959 – Blues centre-forward Dave Hickson revealed that he would welcome a move across the park if the reds were to pursue their alleged interest. He signed four days later for £12,000 and went on to score 38 times in 67 reds games, having grabbed 95 goals in 225 League games in his two spells with the Blues before moving to Anfield. 1949 - Liverpool-born centre-forward Les Shannon was sold to Burnley. He signed professional terms in November 1944 but had to wait until April 1948 to make his reds bow. He bagged just one goal in eleven games, as well as six in fifteen wartime appearances. He is the father of recent Under-16’s coach Dave Shannon. 2015 – Ex-reds defender Richard Money was sacked as Manager of Cambridge United. He had been in charge since October 2012, leading them to the FA Trophy and back into the Football League. 2006 – Future reds keeper Andy Lonergan joined Swindon Town on loan from Preston North End, playing just once for the Robins. 1899 – Inside-left Bill White signed for Queens Park Rangers from West Calder Swifts, netting eight times in 39 games for the R’s. He went on to score within two minutes of his reds debut at home to Everton in September 1901. This was his only strike in six senior games, and he moved on to Dundee in July 1902. Happy birthdays 1994 – Ex-reserves midfielder Jordan Lussey was born in Ormskirk. He was released in June 2015, signing on with Bolton Wanderers the following month after a successful loan spell. 1982 - Former reserves keeper Charles Itandje was born in Bobigny. Also in international action 2021 – Future red Ben Doak featured for Scotland Under-17’s as they lost 3-0 to Italy in a European Championships qualifier in Northern Ireland. 2000 – Future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-16’s as they lost 1-0 to FR Yugoslavia. Happy birthday Walshie 1962 - Paul Walsh was born in Plumstead. He signed from Luton Town for £700,000 in May 1984 and struck 37 times in 112 reds games, winning a League title and the Screen Sport Super Cup before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £500,000 in February 1988. 1879 – Bobby Robinson was born in Sunderland. He moved to the reds from his hometown club for £500 in February 1904. He was top scorer as we won the Second Division title the following season, and also helped us claim the First Division championship in 1906. During the latter stages of his time with the reds, he moved into the half-back line but still bagged a total of 65 goals in 271 games, moving on to Tranmere Rovers in May 1913. A double treble 1980 - Graeme Souness and Terry McDermott both scored trebles as we thumped Finnish champions Oulun Palloseura 10-1 at Anfield to progress to the Second Round of the European Cup by 11-2 on aggregate. This was Souness’s first treble for the reds, which included a penalty. Sammy Lee and Ray Kennedy were also on target, with David Fairclough bagging a brace, with the first being his fiftieth reds strike. Beating the Blues 2011 – We won 2-0 at Everton, with Jack Rodwell sent off half-way through the first half for a late tackle on Luis Suárez. Dirk Kuyt had a penalty saved just before the break, while Charlie Adam struck the crossbar. However, we eventually triumphed thanks to goals from Andy Carroll and Suárez. We had gone in 6-0 up at half-time, as well as having two goals ruled out, for handball and offside. 1994 - Steve McManaman was denied his only reds treble while making his hundredth League appearance when his third goal in our 4-1 defeat of Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield was later credited as a Des Walker own goal. Ian Rush equalised after the break after we had gone in behind to an Ian Nolan goal. 2022 - Leandro Trossard scored a hat-trick for the visitors as Brighton & Hove Albion held us to a 3-3 draw in Roberto de Zerbi’s first game in charge of the Seagulls. Also recently 2017 – Philippe Coutinho scored in his third consecutive game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Rafael Benítez’s Newcastle United. 1988 – Newcastle United won a top-flight fixture 2-1 at Anfield, despite Gary Gillespie heading us into an early lead. John Hendrie equalised after half an hour, with Mirandinha converting a late penalty to secure the win. 2016 – We won 2-1 at Swansea City’s Liberty Stadium, falling behind to an early Leroy Fer goal. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink bagged one of his seven goals against the reds, with Eiður Guðjohnsen also on the scoresheet. 1921 - We also faced the West London outfit, when Dick Forshaw struck in a 1-1 draw at Anfield. 1949 – Albert Stubbins struck in his hundredth League game for the reds as we won 1-0 at West Bromwich Albion. Disappointment at Old Trafford 1995 - Robbie Fowler struck twice as Eric Cantona’s comeback game after a nine-month ban ended all square. Nicky Butt opened the scoring, with Cantona converting a penalty to level the scores, one of his five goals past us. 1977 - We also visited Manchester United, losing 2-0 thanks to goals from Lou Macari and Sammy McIlroy. Zico senior missed 1983 - Phil Neal missed his first League game since December 1974 as we went down 1-0 at home to Sunderland, with Gary Rowell on target from the spot. Future reds in action 1924 - Forward Gordon Hodgson and keeper Arthur Riley both played for a South Africa XI that beat a reds side of mainly reserves at Anfield, with defender Balaert Shears twice drawing the reds level. Hodgson and Riley would both later sign for the club. Under the lights 1958 - We beat Everton 2-1 at home in the first leg of the short-lived Floodlight Challenge Cup, with Alan Arnell and Jimmy Melia on the scoresheet. We won the return leg 3-2 to retain the trophy. Also in Europe 2015 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by Swiss side Sion in a UEFA Europa League game at Anfield, with Adam Lallana firing the reds an early lead before we were pegged back. 2014 – We lost 1-0 at Basel in our UEFA Champions League group encounter, with Marco Streller on target after the break. 1974 - Ray Kennedy netted the only goal of the game at the Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo as we beat Norwegian amateurs Strømsgodset to progress to the Second Round of the European Cup Winners’ Cup by a huge 12-0 aggregate scoreline. This was Kevin Keegan’s first game back after his lengthy suspension following his dismissal in that season’s FA Charity Shield. He made 348 reds appearances, scoring 31 times, following his £4m arrival from AS Monaco in June 2001, but left for Roma for the same fee in June 2008. He helped us to win the European Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. 1979 – Brazilian left-back Fábio Aurélio was born in São Carlos. He arrived on a Bosman free transfer in July 2006, netting four goals in 134 games, helping us to claim the FA Community Shield in his very first senior appearance. Another record for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen scored his 21st goal in European competition, a new club record, to hand us a 1-1 draw at Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana in the opening game of our UEFA Cup campaign. Anton Zlogar’s opening goal was the 250th we conceded under the sole charge of Gérard Houllier. Owen has since been comprehensively overtaken by Steven Gerrard. Most recently 2023 – We beat West Ham United 3-1 at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah converting a penalty but Jarrod Bowen nodded in before the break. Jonathan Cameron and Malcolm McVean also struck, while James Kelso played his only reds game. He signed professional terms in September 1968 and struck thirty times in 120 reds games, although he struggled to get picked in front of Kevin Keegan and John Toshack. He left the club to join Middlesbrough in December 1975 for £72,000. 1912 – Centre-forward Fred Howe was born in Bredbury in Cheshire. He joined on a free transfer from Hyde United in March 1935, netting 36 times in 94 outings before joining Manchester City in June 1938. He bagged three reds trebles, including notching four times in our record 6-0 derby victory at Anfield in September 1935. 1889 - Irish forward Billy Lacey was born in Enniscorthy, Wexford. He signed from Everton alongside centre-forward Tommy Gracie in a swap deal for £300 and winger Harold Uren in February 1912, going on to play 259 times for the reds, including the FA Cup Final in 1914. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting 29 times before crossing the Mersey to join New Brighton in June 1924. 1875 - Centre-half Robert Neill was born in Govan, Glasgow. At five feet four inches he is probably our shortest ever central defender, scoring three times in 27 games after signing on loan from Hibernian in April 1895 and then permanently in May 1896. He left to join Rangers in April 1897. Debuting at Manchester City 1910 - Forward Sam Gilligan scored on his reds debut as we beat City 2-1 at their Hyde Road ground, with Jack Parkinson also on target. 1969 - Phil Boersma made his reds bow on his twentieth birthday in our 3-2 defeat at Maine Road, becoming our first ever League Cup substitute, coming on for goalscorer Alun Evans in this Third Round tie, who bagged an equaliser when George Heslop’s panicked clearance struck him on the chest and went in. Supersub back at Anfield 1985 - David Fairclough played for the visitors as Oldham Athletic lost a League Cup Second Round first leg tie 3-0 at Anfield, our hundredth match in the competition. Steve McMahon bagged a brace, with Ian Rush also on target. A rare defeat 1974 - Burnley won 1-0 at Anfield, inflicting one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered in the whole of the 1970’s. Full-back Ian Brennan stunned Ray Clemence from thirty yards with his first ever goal for the club. Signing on 1938 – Utility player Bill Jones signed from Hayfield St Matthews. He scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. He later scouted for the reds while his grandson Rob represented the club in defence on 243 occasions in the 1990’s. 2021 – Newcastle-born midfielder James McConnell signed pro terms with the reds. He had arrived as an Under-16 from Sunderland. He made nine senior appearances in 2023/24. Hooper steps in 1988 - Reserves keeper Mike Hooper replaced Bruce Grobbelaar, who had gone down with meningitis, as we won 3-1 at Southampton thanks to goals from John Aldridge, Peter Beardsley and Jan Mølby. Clinching the title 1964 - Our biggest win on this day came when we beat Arsenal 5-0, with goals from Ian St. John, Alf Arrowsmith, Roger Hunt and a brace from Peter Thompson. This was enough to hand us our sixth League title, and first under Shanks. BBC’s Panorama programme filmed the Kop at the game, to report on this “extraordinary cultural phenomenon”. The game was an entertaining affair, with Tommy Lawrence saving a George Eastham penalty after a handball by Ron Yeats with the score at 1-0, and Ian Callaghan having a spot-kick saved by ex-reds keeper, and Gunners captain for the day, Jim Furnell late on with keeper Tommy Lawrence initially stepping forward to take it before Bill Shankly waved him back. The team celebrated with the home-made ‘Curlett Cup’ as the actual trophy was still at Goodison from the season before. We have twice also made the trip to Highbury on this day in history. 1931 - We lost 3-1, with our strike being a Herbert Roberts own goal. He was signed from Lille OSC Métropole for £9.8m in July 2014 but was immediately loaned back to spend another season in France. He made two appearances while on loan from Southampton at Anfield in January 2004. Ged’s return 2002 - A famous night in Anfield history came as we defeated Roma 2-0 to qualify for the Quarter-finals of the Champions League in our first season in the current format of the competition. Happy birthdays 1981 – Centre-back Kolo Touré was born in Bouaké in the Ivory Coast. He arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City in July 2013, netting once in 71 reds games before being released in July 2016. 1982 – Substitute keeper Brad Jones was born in Armadale, Australia. He signed from Middlesbrough for £2.3m in August 2010, making 27 senior appearances before being released in June 2015. 1966 - Nigel Clough was born in Sunderland. He netted nine times in 44 reds games after signing from Nottingham Forest for £2,275,000 in June 1993, without making the expected impact at Anfield. He is now Manager of Derby County, after a successful spell in charge of non-league Burton Albion. The secretary made a good start 1938 - We won 3-1 at Brentford in a Second Division match, with Arthur Riley saving a penalty from Bobby Reid. Left-half Jimmy McInnes scored his only reds goal on his debut, with Jack Balmer and Alf Hanson also netting. McInnes only played 48 times for us, and was the club’s Secretary between 1955 and 1965, before hanging himself from the turnstile area of the Kop four days after our first ever FA Cup Final win. United beaten 1995 - We defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the League at Anfield, thanks to a Steve Bruce own goal, the second he had netted for us after a previous one while with Norwich City, and a sweet strike from Jamie Redknapp who was reaching a century of League outings for the reds. This result helped ensure United were denied a third consecutive League title that season. Most recently 2017 – We drew 1-1 at Manchester City, with ex-City player James Milner putting us in front from the spot before Sergio Agüero struck one of his seven goals past us. Signing on 1935 - Centre-forward Fred Howe joined on a free transfer from Hyde United. He struck 36 times in 94 outings before joining Manchester City in June 1938. He netted three reds trebles, including notching four times in our record 6-0 derby victory at Anfield in September 1935. 1934 – Left-half John Browning signed from Dunoon Athletic. He made just nineteen appearances before moving on to Southern League side Gillingham in August 1939. First and last 1898 - Wing-half Charlie Wilson made his reds bow as Bolton Wanderers held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with Harry Bradshaw striking his 53rd and final reds goal and forward Pat Finnerhan playing his eighth and last game for the club. Wilson joined the backroom team in 1905, staying on staff until the Second World War. 1955 – Lincoln City won 4-2 at Anfield in the Second Division as centre-half Fred Tomley played his second and last reds game. Billy Liddell scored from the spot but Fred Tomley headed into his own net and Fred Middleton converted a penalty to give the Imps a half-time lead. Bob Gibson bagged a brace before Liddell scored again. Heading towards Wembley 1977 - We beat Middlesbrough 2-0 at Anfield in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup as we headed towards another Final. David Fairclough and Kevin Keegan struck the goals. 1921 - We also faced Boro, with Harry Chambers grabbing the only goal of our top-flight meeting at Ayresome Park from the spot. On the same day, the fourth of five FA Cup Semi-finals to be staged at Anfield took place, with losing Finalists Wolverhampton Wanderers sharing a goalless draw with Cardiff City. Derby stalemates We have twice played out goalless top-flight draws with Everton on this day in history 1966 – Both sides drew blanks at Goodison, with Chris Lawler reaching a century of reds games. 1983 – Another meeting ended without score at Anfield as Graeme Souness played his 200th League game for the reds. Up against Rovers We have twice faced Blackburn Rovers in First Division fixtures on this day. 1927 - Harry Chambers and Tommy Reid were on target in a 2-2 draw at Anfield. Tommy McLean bagged the first of his five goals against the reds, with Red Harper also scoring one of his five past us. 1932 - Gordon Gunson struck a brace with Gordon Hodgson also on the scoresheet as we won 3-1 at Ewood Park. Morgan’s first 1898 - Future red Hugh Morgan made his debut for Scotland as they thumped Wales 5-2 in the British International Championships at Fir Park. This was his only cap as a St. Mirren player. Chmabers for England 1923 - Harry Chambers was on target as England thrashed Belgium 6-1 in a friendly at Highbury. Fellow reds Tom Bromilow and Ephraim Longworth also featured. Yet another draw 1975 - We were held for the sixth consecutive League game, this time 1-1 at Leicester City with John Toshack notching our goal, while midfielder Peter Cormack was playing his hundredth League game for the reds. This run helped ensure we missed out on the League title by just two points. Former reds target Frank Worthington netted for the home side. On the move 1987 - Future red Paul Stewart joined Manchester City from Blackpool for £200,000. He bagged an impressive thirty goals in 63 games, before moving to Tottenham Hotspur for £1.7m in June 1988. 2004 - Andy Parkinson, who was in the victorious FA Youth Cup squad in 1996, rejoined Notts County on loan from Sheffield United. He played nine times in this spell. 2012 – Former reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle joined Exeter City on loan from Fulham, playing five times without notching. 2013 – Ex-reds forward Michael Owen announced he would retire from playing at the end of the season, with his career having stalled at Stoke City. Beginning and end 1941 – Winger Jackie Sheldon died. He grabbed twenty goals in 147 reds games after joining from Manchester United in November 1913, playing in our first ever FA Cup Final in 1914. He retired in 1922 after breaking his leg, with his name forever tainted by being the go-between in our match-fixing scandal with Manchester United in April 1915. 2011 - Lucas Leiva became a father for the first time, to Pedro. Other reds games 1994 – We beat Chelsea 2-1 at Anfield. Ian Rush put is front before Craig Burley headed into his own net and then pulled a goal back for the visitors. 1980 – We defeated Leeds United 3-0 in L4 as David Johnson struck either side of an Alan Kennedy goal to extend our lead over Manchester United at the top of the table to six points. 1960 – Huddersfield Town held us to a 2-2 draw at home in a Second Division encounter. Dave Hickson and Johnny Wheeler put us two goals ahead after sixteen minutes, with Billy Liddell having struck the ball so hard after just four minutes that it had burst! Liddell’s second-half penalty hit the post and was cleared away. Kevin McHale and Chris Balderstone then scored to level the match. 1949 – We lost 2-1 at Charlton Athletic with Jack Balmer giving the reds a half-time lead. Charlie Vaughan scored one of his four goals against the reds, with Chris Duffy netting the winner. 1924 – We beat Sunderland 4-2 in L4. Harry Chambers scored with Donald McKinlay netting twice before Billy Hogg bagged the last two of his five goals past us, all before half time. Danny Shone completed the scoring, with Elisha Scott saving a penalty from Billy Ellis in the last minute. 1910 – We won 2-1 at Bury. Sam Bowyer and Arthur Goddard both scored in the opening half hour, but Billy Hibbert grabbed one of his thirteen goals past us late on. Happy birthday Spud 1977 - Danny Murphy was born in Chester. He arrived from Crewe Alexandra for an overall £3m fee in July 1997. Spud was nearly on his way out early into his Anfield career, but later established himself as a vital squad member. He made a total of 249 first-team appearances, notching 44 times, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before moving to Charlton Athletic for £2.5m in August 2004. Two-ton Rushie 1987 - Ian Rush bagged his 200th and 201st reds goals as we beat Queens Park Rangers 2-1, with ex-red Sammy Lee in the visitors’ side. 1967 – We lost 1-0 at Burnley with Les Latcham bagging a fortuitous late winner as Tommy Smith reached a century of League appearances for the reds. Skipper once again 2010 – Steven Gerrard captained the reds for the 300th time as we beat Lille OSC Métropole 3-0 in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie at Anfield, so overcoming a 1-0 first leg deficit. Gerrard opened the scoring from the spot after Lucas was brought down inside the first ten minutes. Fernando Torres bagged a second-half brace to secure victory. On the way to Wembley 1989 - We beat Third Division Brentford 4-0 at Anfield in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, thanks to a diving header from Steve McMahon, John Barnes strike and a late brace from Peter Beardsley as we headed towards Wembley yet again. 1899 - Unfortunately, we failed to reach our first ever FA Cup Final, holding Sheffield United to a 2-2 draw in the Semi-final at the City Ground, with George Allan and Hugh Morgan on the scoresheet. We eventually lost a second replay following a further draw. A disappointing League Cup first 1978 - We played our first ever League Cup Final, dominating the match but being held to a goalless draw by Nottingham Forest at Wembley, after extra time, before losing the replay four days later. Terry McDermott had a goal ruled out for offside with the referee also turning down a good penalty shout after Kenny Dalglish was felled in the area. Keeping milestones 2007 - Pepe Reina kept his fiftieth clean sheet as we held Aston Villa to a goalless draw at Villa Park, in what was his 93rd reds game. 1911 – Sam Hardy played his 200th reds game in our 2-1 top-flight defeat at Preston North End. Inside-left Ronald Orr struck our goal, with Ernest Bannister bagging a brace for the home side. Short-term long contracts 2009 - Rafael Benítez signed a new contract with the reds to tie him to Anfield until 2014. However, he left the club “by mutual consent” in June 2010 after 194 wins in his 350 games in charge. 2003 – Future reds right-back Glen Johnson signed a new four-year contract with West Ham United, although he moved to Chelsea for £6m just four months later. Other birthdays 1889 - Scottish left-back Bob Pursell was born in Campbeltown. He twice got us into trouble, firstly when we made an illegal approach to sign him from Queen’s Park in September 1911. He was then involved in the 1915 match-fixing scandal with Manchester United. He played 113 reds games without scoring, including the 1914 FA Cup Final, moving on to Port Vale in May 1920. 1942 - Forward Reginald Blore was born in Wrexham. He only made one senior appearance for the reds, aged just seventeen, and later had much greater success at Oldham Athletic, for whom he made over 200 League appearances in midfield. He also won the Professional Footballers’ Golf Championship in 1968! 1952 - Academy Chief Scout Dave Moss was born in Witney. He played as a striker for Swindon Town and Luton Town before moving into coaching, joining the reds in February 2006. Heading towards Wembley 2012 – We beat Stoke City 2-1 in the FA Cup Sixth Round at Anfield. Luis Suárez scored before ex-red Peter Crouch headed in a leveller, one of his four goals past us. Stewart Downing scored the winner after the break. Unhappy millennium 1922 - We lost 2-0 at home to Bolton Wanderers in a top-flight encounter that was our thousandth first-class fixture, with William Cunningham playing his third and final reds game as keeper Elisha Scott reached a century of reds outings. Joe Smith netted one of his twelve goals past us with David Jack nabbing one of his nine in a match that also counted for Section 2 of the Lancashire Senior Cup. Signing on 1895 – England international inside-forward Frank Becton signed from his hometown club Preston North End for £200, notching 42 times in 86 games before joining Sheffield United in October 1898. 1983 – Forward David West signed from Dorchester Town for £15,000. He made it to the first-team bench on two occasions without ever making a senior appearance. He moved on to Torquay United in September 1985. Getting rammed 2001 - Robbie Fowler played his 300th reds game in our 1-1 home League draw with Derby County, as Michael Owen equalised Deon Burton’s opener for the Rams. 2000 - We won 2-0 at Pride Park, with Owen and Titi Camara getting our goals. Sam’s treble 1905 - Sam Raybould scored a hat-trick in our 6-1 Second Division defeat of Gainsborough Trinity at Anfield. Jack Parkinson added a brace, with Arthur Goddard also on the scoresheet. European memories 1981 - We won 1-0 at CSKA Sofia in the second leg of our European Cup Third Round tie, with David Johnson on target after Sammy Lee had hit the post to send us through 6-1 on aggregate. Ray Clemence saved a penalty from Plamen Markov with ten minutes to go after a Jimmy Case foul. The night was one of mixed fortunes for our scorer, as Johnson pulled a hamstring, and had to be replaced by Steve Heighway before half time. 1992 - Less happily, we crashed out of the UEFA Cup at the Fourth Round stage, losing 2-1 to Genoa at Anfield to bow out 4-1 overall. Ian Rush bagged our goal with Mark Wright being taken off with a torn hamstring after just seventeen minutes. Uruguayan forward Carlos Aguileira struck both the visitors’ goals. Ronnie at the wrong end 1990 - Ronnie Whelan scored a late own goal at Old Trafford, although we still beat Manchester United 2-1 on the way to our most recent League title. John Barnes bagged both our goals, with one coming from the spot, his fiftieth reds goal. 1916 - We also took a trip down the East Lancs. Road with our Wartime League fixture ending goalless. Thumping the Geordies 1972 - We trounced Newcastle United 5-0 at Anfield with Chris Lawler, Kevin Keegan, John Toshack, Emlyn Hughes and Steve Heighway all netting. Tom’s last 1893 – We defeated South Shore 4-1 in a Lancashire League game at Anfield with John Miller on target twice. Malcolm McVean also scored with outside-right Tom Wyllie bagging his fifteenth and last goal for the club. To Elland back 1933 - Leeds United recorded their best ever win over the reds, thumping us 5-0 at Elland Road, to complete a League double. Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw put through his own net, with Jack Mahon bagging the first two of his four goals against the reds, Arthur Hydes scoring the first of his four past us and Harry Duggan bagging one of his five. 1936 - We beat the Yorkshire side 2-1 at Anfield, with Fred Howe and Phil Taylor on target. Arthur Riley saved a penalty from the visitors’ Jack Milburn, with George Brown netting the last of his nine strikes against us. Representative honours 1895 – Forward Gerald Dewhurst won his only England cap as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in the British International Championships at Queen’s Club in London. He was a Liverpool Ramblers player at the time and had played one reds game as a guest from Corinthians in March 1894. 1964 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt played for the Football League as they drew 2-2 with a Scottish League side at Roker Park. Other reds games 1961 – We were beaten 2-0 in a Second Division trip to Swansea Town. 1950 – Wolverhampton Wanderers won 2-0 at Anfield with Jim Hanc***s scoring in the first half. Roy Swinbourne struck the first of his five goals past us after the break. 1939 – We lost 2-0 at Arsenal with Alf Kirchen grabbing the last of his four goals against the reds and Ted Drake netting the final one of his six. 1914 – We beat Chelsea 3-0 in L4. Billy Banks bagged a brace with Tom Miller also on target, with all the goals coming in the second half. Loan moves 2000 - Former reserves forward Sean Friars joined Portadown on loan from Ipswich Town. He returned to Portman Road two months later, where he continued to fail to break through. 2005 - Former second-string defender Andrew Nicholas joined Chester City on loan from Swindon Town. He played five League Two games in his spell with the Blues. Nando at the treble 2008 - Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick to pass twenty goals for the season after we had fallen behind against Middlesbrough at Anfield. We went on to win 3-2, with Jérémie Aliadière sent off for the visitors for slapping Javier Mascherano. This meant we became the first team ever to score hat-tricks in all of the League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League in the same season. Tuncay Şanlı and future red Stewart Downing netted for the visitors. Daniel again 2014 - Daniel Sturridge scored in his seventh consecutive League game as we eventually beat Swansea City 4-3 at Anfield. He put us in front inside three minutes, with Jordan Henderson extending our lead before ex-red Jonjo Shelvey scored a spectacular goal and Martin Škrtel put through his own net to level the scores. Sturridge headed in his second before Wilfred Bony equalised from the spot. Henderson then grabbed the winner. Sami the centurion twice 2002 - Nicolas Anelka netted after Thomas Radzinski had opened the scoring in the Anfield derby, while Sami Hyypiä played in his hundredth League match for us. This was the first League derby in a quarter of century to feature two English goalies, as Chris Kirkland and Steve Simonsen played. Kirkland thus became the first reds keeper to play his first three games for the club in three different competitions, following appearances in the League Cup and Champions League. Abel Xavier appeared for the reds, becoming the first player ever to play for both sides in the derby during the same season. 2003 - Sami Hyypiä played his 200th reds game as we lost 2-1 at Birmingham City, with Michael Owen bagging our consolation. Ray Clemence’s son Stephen opened the scoring for the home side, with Clinton Morrison nabbing the last of his four strikes against us. 1935 - We also visited St. Andrews, with Gordon Hodgson grabbing a brace and Sam English also on target in a 3-1 win as Fred Harris bagged the first of his five goals against the reds. Keeper Arthur Riley played his 200th League game for the reds. Trouncing the Whites 2022 – We thumped Leeds United 6-0 at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah converting two penalties and Joël Matip also on target in the first half hour. Sadio Mané added two late goals before Virgil van Dijk headed in during stoppage time. Happy birthdays 1955 – Former Chief Executive Rick Parry was born. The qualified Chartered Accountant had previously been involved with Manchester’s bid for the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games and advised the Birmingham Olympic Games Council on financial matters, joining the reds from the Premier League in July 1998. He played a pivotal role in the takeover of the club by Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. in March 2007, before leaving the club in the summer of 2009. 1968 - Former Masseur Stuart Welsh was born in Liverpool. Previously with Wigan Athletic, he helped out with the first team and reserves before his move to Anfield came about during the summer of 2002. 1899 - Forward Bill Salisbury was born in Glasgow. He signed from Partick Thistle in October 1928, bagging three goals in seventeen games before joining Bangor City the following August. Red against blue at Wembley 1983 - Ian Rush netted in his fifth consecutive international, with Phil Neal converting a penalty as England beat Wales 2-1 in the British International Championships at Wembley. It was Zico’s fifth and final international goal. Sammy Lee and ex-red Joey Jones also played. This is the most recent occasion when a red has scored against an Everton goalkeeper in a full international, as Neville Southall was in the Welsh goal. Farewell to two legendary forwards 1927 - Dick Forshaw played his 288th and final reds game as we held Leeds United to a goalless draw at Elland Road, while Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers was playing his 300th game for us. 1952 - Jack Balmer made his 309th and last reds appearance as we lost 2-0 at Burnley in the FA Cup Fifth Round, with centre-half Joe Cadden playing his fifth and last reds game and forward Cyril Done turning out for the 110th and last time. Billy Morris and ex-red Les Shannon scored the goals. 1918 - We also visited Turf Moor, winning a Wartime League match 3-1 thanks to goals from Walter Wadsworth, George Schofield and Thomas Green. Top of the table controversy 1980 - David Fairclough put the reds ahead at Anfield against Ipswich Town early on, but Eric Gates equalised against the run of play six minutes from time with one of his five goals past us. That was when the drama really started as Terry Butcher then fouled Kenny Dalglish in the box, with referee Bert Newsome immediately pointing to the spot. The visiting players were incensed, and as Terry McDermott ran up to take the spot-kick Frans Thijssen hurled a dollop of mud across his path. Town keeper Paul Cooper got down well to smother the shot and the Kop was outraged when the ref failed to order a retake. First and last caps 1901 – Ex-reds half-back Barney Battles made his debut for Scotland as they trounced Northern Ireland 11-0 in a British International Championships game at his home ground, Celtic Park. 2017 – Liam Millar won his third and last cap for Canada Under-20’s as they beat Antigua & Barbuda 2-0 in a CONCACAF Championships group game in Costa Rica. Also on target in the British International Championships 1982 - Ex-red Kevin Keegan struck his 21st and final international goal in England’s 4-0 thumping of Northern Ireland at Wembley, while winning his sixtieth cap. Fellow ex-red Ray Clemence also played. 1907 - George Latham played as Wales beat Ireland 3-2 in Belfast. Richard Morris won his tenth cap, his only one as a Grimsby Town player, and netted his only international goal. In and out 1962 – Keeper Jim Furnell arrived from Burnley for £18,000, helping us to secure the Second Division title that season. He moved on to Arsenal in November 1963 after 28 first-team outings. 2015 – French midfielder Alou Diarra signed for Charlton Athletic, netting once in 45 games for the Addicks before moving to AS Nancy-Lorraine in September 2016. 2016 – Midfielder Kevin Stewart signed a new contract. He made twenty senior appearances for the reds since arriving in July 2014 after his contract with Tottenham Hotspur expired, moving on to Hull City after three years in L4. 2018 – Ex-reds centre-half Gabriel Paletta signed for Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning, netting once in 46 outings. On the same day, midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner signed as a professional for the reds, making three senior appearances before being released in the summer of 2022. 2021 – Under-23’s Assistant Coach Gary O’Neil left the reds to take over as Senior First Team Coach for Bournemouth, joining up again with ex-reds scout Jonathan Woodgate. Derby despair 1998 - David James played his 213th consecutive reds game in a 1-1 derby draw at Anfield, before finally making way for Brad Friedel. Paul Ince nabbed our equaliser after Duncan Ferguson had struck one of his five goals past us, while Robbie Fowler suffered a serious knee injury in a clash with keeper Thomas Myhre. This was our eighth consecutive derby without victory. After Kenny 1991 - We played our first game since Kenny Dalglish resigned, losing 3-1 at Luton Town. Jan Mølby netted our goal from the spot, the club’s 6,000th League goal to date, as Ronnie Moran took temporary charge for the first time. This was our last game on their controversial plastic pitch, as it was replaced with grass in time for the following season. Bruce Grobbelaar was replaced by Mike Hooper after taking ill overnight, after 107 consecutive reds games. Iain Dowie bagged a brace, with Kingsley Black also netting. International reds in friendlies 2000 - Future reds Bolo Zenden and Christian Ziege both scored as Germany lost 2-1 to the Netherlands at the Amsterdam ArenA. Dietmar Hamann and future red Markus Babbel also played, as Lothar Matthäus became the most capped footballer of all time to date, winning his 144th cap. Stéphane Henchoz was sent off for the first time in his career, for dissent, as Switzerland lost 1-0 to the United Arab Emirates in a tournament in Oman. Ex-reds reserves midfielder Jim Magilton won his fortieth cap for Northern Ireland, and first as an Ipswich Town player, as they won 3-1 in Luxembourg. Meanwhile, Emile Heskey won his fifth cap, and last as a Leicester City player, as Kevin Keegan’s England played out a goalless draw with Argentina at Wembley. Future red John Arne Riise bagged his first Norway goal in their 2-0 win in Turkey, playing alongside Vegard Heggem. Future red Robbie Keane netted his final goal while with Coventry City as Phil Babb, Steve Staunton and ex-reds Mark Kennedy and Jason McAteer also faced Patrik Berger and Vladimír Šmicer as the Republic of Ireland beat the Czech Republic 3-2 in Dublin, their first win over the Czechs in four attempts. He only played twice for the Blues, conceding twice in both matches - at Newcastle United and West Ham United. 2007 - Reserves custodian David Martin moved to Accrington Stanley on loan. He kept just two clean sheets in ten League Two outings. Entertaining the Potters 1985 - Steve Nicol and Kenny Dalglish were on target in the first half-hour as we beat Stoke City 2-0 at Anfield in a top-flight match, with Kenny making his 300th League appearance for the reds. 1893 - We also entertained Stoke, when our friendly ended goalless. Other reds games 1957 – Bristol City’s visit to Anfield was abandoned with the score 1-0 to the Robins. We went on to win the rearranged game 2-1 three months later. 1924 – We drew 0-0 at Southampton in an FA Cup Third Round tie. We won the replay, but lost at Newcastle United in the next round. 1907 – Jack Cox bagged the only goal of Bradford City’s trip to L4 at the same stage of the competition in what was Tom Watson’s 400th game in charge of the reds. Unfortunately, we were knocked out at The Wednesday at the very next hurdle. Rushie the Blade 1998 - Ian Rush joined Sheffield United on loan from Newcastle United. He played four times during his month at Bramall Lane, without netting. Stevie the dad 2004 - Steven Gerrard became the father of his first baby girl, Lilly-Ella. St. Michael on TV 2000 - Michael Owen starred in Children’s BBC’s “Hero To Zero” drama series, stepping out of a poster on a young boy’s wall to offer advice. Also in international action 1929 - Elisha Scott kept goal as Northern Ireland lost 7-3 to Scotland in the British International Championships at Windsor Park. 1966 – Roger Hunt featured in England’s 1-0 friendly defeat of West Germany at Wembley, ahead of that year’s World Cup Finals. 1999 – Future red Milan Baroš played for the Czech Republic Under-18’s as they drew a friendly 1-1 in Greece. 2001 – Future red Ragnar Klavan played as Estonia Under-17’s were thumped 5-0 by Belarus in a friendly in Tallinn. 2018 – Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-18’s as they lost a friendly 2-1 to Russia. -

Fernando Torres missed a host of golden chances, with boss Rafael Benítez further riling the club’s American owners by choosing to wear a track-suit, following on from his repeated statements in a pre-match press conference that “as always I am focused on training and coaching my team”. On the same day, future reds striker Milan Jovanović played for Serbia in a 1-0 Euro 2008 qualifying defeat of Kazakhstan in Belgrade. 1900 - Jack Cox was on target as we held the Geordies to a 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park. Biting the hand that fed 1984 - A John Wark brace gave us a 2-0 win over his old club Ipswich Town at Anfield. Mixed European fortunes 2021 - Sadio Mané played his fiftieth European game for the reds, with Mohamed Salah reaching the same milestone for us in the UEFA Champions League. Alisson Becker captained the side for the first time as we beat Porto 2-0 in a group stage game at Anfield, thanks to second-half strikes from Thiago Alcântara and Salah. 2009 – We beat Debreceni VSC at the Stadion Puskás Ferenc in Budapest. David N’Gog bagged the only goal of the game inside the first five minutes as we failed to reach the knock-out stages of the Champions League due to the other result in our group. 1998 - We were on our way out of the UEFA Cup as we lost 3-1 at Celta de Vigo in our Third Round first leg tie, after Michael Owen had opened the scoring. We were unable to turn things round in the second leg, which we also lost, 1-0. Current reds forward Iago Aspas was apparently a ball-boy in the away leg. Bon anniversaire 1947 – Former First-team coach Jacques Crevoisier was born in Delle, France. He worked under Gérard Houllier for two years after the departure of Patrice Bergues. Running riot against the Hornets 1987 - We beat Watford 4-0 at Anfield to return to the top of the table, with Steve McMahon, Ray Houghton, John Aldridge and John Barnes all on the scoresheet. 2018 – We won 3-0 at Vicarage Road, despite skipper Jordan Henderson being dismissed late on. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring before Trent Alexander-Arnold converted a free-kick, with Roberto Firmino tapping in the third. Reds centurions 1979 – Kenny Dalglish played his hundredth League game for the reds as we held Arsenal to a goalless draw at Highbury. 1956 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 300th reds game as we drew 1-1 with Swansea Town in a Second Division meeting at Vetch Field. Alan Arnell struck our goal. Mixed fortunes against the Villains 1906 - Robert Robinson struck a brace with Arthur Goddard, Alex Raisbeck, from the spot, and Sam Raybould also on the scoresheet as we beat Aston Villa 5-2 at Anfield, with Tom Chorlton having a penalty saved. Joe Walters netted the first of his five goals against the reds, with Albert Hall also scoring. Our third goal of the game was the club’s thousandth in all competitions. 1923 - Villa left L4 with a 1-0 win in another top-flight fixture, with Len Capewell bagging the first of his six strikes against the reds. Stalemates with Mancs 1951 - We were held to a goalless top-flight draw by Manchester United at Anfield. 1990 - Manchester City also left L4 with a point when Ian Rush and Ronnie Rosenthal netted late on as we drew 2-2. Mark Ward opened the scoring after an hour, with Niall Quinn netting a last-minute equaliser. George signs on 1926 - Left-winger George Pither signed from Merthyr Town for £500. He only made twelve senior appearances, stepping in for the established Fred Hopkin, before joining Crewe Alexandra in May 1928. Losing to the Owls 1928 - We lost 3-2 at Hillsborough with Jimmy McDougall and Tom Bromilow on target against The Wednesday. Jack Allen bagged the first two of his five goals against the reds, with Ellis Rimmer netting one of his five past us. 1945 - Sheffield Wednesday won our Wartime League match 2-0 at Anfield. Lawler at last 1973 - Chris Lawler played in his 102nd consecutive reds League game but was taken off for Phil Boersma after suffering a cartilage injury as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Queens Park Rangers. He missed our next top-flight match a week later, when we entertained West Ham United. Larry Lloyd bagged his fifth and last reds goal with John Toshack also on target. Stan Bowles and Frank McLintock struck for the visitors. Happy birthday Mac 1895 – Half-back John McConnell was born in Motherwell. He netted just once in 53 first-team appearances leading up to the First World War after signing from Airdrieonians for £80 in April 1909, including one in goal in only his second game! He left the reds to join Aberdeen in May 1912. Trouncing Rovers 1917 - We thumped Blackburn Rovers 7-0 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Harry Lewis and Jack Waine both struck twice, with Thomas Bennett, Arthur Metcalf and Donald McKinlay all also on target. Management moves 1994 - John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Real Sociedad for the second time after three years with the club. 2008 - Brendan Rodgers was appointed Manager of Watford, leaving his coaching role at Chelsea. He led them to thirteen victories in his 32 games in charge, before moving to Reading the following June. 2022 – Dirk Kuyt was sacked as Head Coach of ADO Den Haag, after just five months in charge. In World Cup action 2022 – Alisson Becker kept a clean sheet as Brazil beat Serbia in a group stage game in Qatar. Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon as they lost 1-0 to Switzerland, with ex-red Xherdan Shaqiri on the winning side. Transfer scoop foiled 1999 - The reds laughed off claims that we were about to sign AS Monaco defender Didier Baptiste. The News Of The World stated that “Houllier faces stiff opposition from Arsène Wenger who wants a long-term replacement for Nigel Winterburn”, and the story was picked up by many sources including the reds’ own Club Call service. However, it was soon revealed that Baptiste was merely a fictional character in Sky One’s “Dream Team” programme! On target 2015 – Future red Rafael Camacho scored for Portugal Under-16’s in their 3-3 friendly draw with Belgium in Penafiel. 1965 - Chris Lawler and Tommy Smith both appeared for England Under-23’s as they beat Yugoslavia 2-1 in a friendly at The Dell. Out on loan 2010 – Keeper Chris Kirkland joined Leicester City on loan from Wigan Athletic, playing just three times for the Foxes. On the same day, Tony Warner was released by Sc***horpe United after making just two first-team appearances. 2005 - Second string centre-back Zak Whitbread moved to Millwall on loan. He played 27 times before signing permanently seven months later. On the same day, ex-red Don Hutchison left The New Den to sign temporarily for Coventry City. 1995 - Ex-reds reserves defender Alan Harper joined Cardiff City on loan from Burnley. Thrashing the Mancs 2021 – We thumped Manchester United 5-0 at Old Trafford, with Naby Keïta and Diogo Jota scoring before Mohamed Salah netted a treble as he struck in a club record tenth consecutive reds game. We went into the break 4-0 up, with half-time substitute Paul Pogba sent off for the home side after we had scored our fifth. This was Jürgen Klopp’s 200th win as Manager in a club record 331 games. More trebles for 1984 - Ian Rush bagged a hat-trick in torrential rain as we beat SL Benfica 3-1 at Anfield in a European Cup Second Round encounter. 1998 - Michael Owen scored four goals, including a penalty, as we thumped Nottingham Forest 5-1 at Anfield. Steve McManaman grabbed the other, with Dougie Freedman on target for the visitors. An Olympic champion 1908 - Arthur Berry was in the United Kingdom side that won Olympic gold by beating Denmark 2-0 in the Final at White City Stadium. Trebles against 1925 - Frank Osborne scored the first three of his four goals past us for Tottenham Hotspur as they beat us 3-1 in a First Division match at White Hart Lane, the first of three consecutive League trebles he struck for the Londoners, becoming the first player in the Football League’s history to achieve that feat. South African keeper Arthur Riley made his reds bow in this game, becoming the first player born outside the British Isles to represent the club. Dick Forshaw netted our goal. 1936 – We lost 5-2 at Brentford with Jack Balmer and Berry Nieuwenhuys nabbing our goals. Dave McCulloch bagged a treble, the first of his seven goals against the reds, with Bobby Reid scoring the first of his five and Jack Holliday also on target. Razor sharpened 1987 - Ray Houghton made his first-class reds debut as a rare Gary Gillespie goal was enough to hand us victory at Luton Town. 1960 - We also visited Kenilworth Road, when we won a League Cup Second Round replay 5-2, our first win in the new competition. This came courtesy of a brace each from Kevin Lewis and Roger Hunt, and a Dave Hickson goal. Gordon Turner netted one of his five goals past us, with David Brogan also on target. Mo’s half century 2018 – Mohamed Salah reached fifty reds goals, notching twice, including one from the spot, as we beat Crvena Zvezda 4-0 in our UEFA Champions League group game at Anfield. Roberto Firmino had opened the scoring, with the final goal coming from Sadio Mané, having already had a penalty saved. Also in Europe 2001 - We visited Boavista in the Champions League for our 200th game in European competition, with a Danny Murphy goal being enough to secure a point in the first group stage. 1972 - We beat AEK Athens 3-0 at Anfield in a UEFA Cup Second Round tie, with Phil Boersma and Peter Cormack on the scoresheet, and Tommy Smith converting from the spot. Brian Hall was playing his hundredth reds game. 1973 - Slobodan Janković struck a goal for Crvena Zvezda, also known as Red Star Belgrade, from thirty yards before Vladislav Bogićević volleyed in from a seemingly offside position. Chris Lawler bagged our consolation as we lost this European Cup encounter 2-1 at the same stage. Unfortunately, we also lost the Anfield return by the same score. Istanbul despair 2007 - We lost 2-1 at Beşiktaş JK, leaving us with just a single point from our opening three Champions League group games, and teetering on the brink of early elimination. Steven Gerrard headed a late consolation after the home side had taken the lead through a Sami Hyypiä own goal, his second in five days, and a Bobô strike. Blunting the Blades 2020 – Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota both struck as we came from behind to beat Sheffield United 2-1 behind closed doors at Anfield with left-back Andy Robertson playing his hundredth League game for the reds. 1953 – Jimmy Payne netted as we beat the Blades 3-0 in a top-flight fixture at Anfield, with Sammy Smyth bagging a brace. Stan no longer the man 2007 - Steve Staunton was sacked as Manager of the Republic of Ireland after 21 months in charge in which he had overseen just six wins in seventeen games. Red deaths 1981 – Left-half John Shield died. He signed from Bishop Auckland in December 1935 but made just one senior appearance before returning to his former club in October 1936. 1966 - Keeper Sam Hardy died in Chesterfield. He signed from his hometown club for £340 in May 1905 and had made 240 reds appearances, helping us to the League title in 1906 as well as winning fourteen England caps while at Anfield, and two FA Cups for Aston Villa after moving to the Midlands in May 1912. 1942 – Forward Harry Race died in World War II action in El Alamein, Egypt. He had joined the reds from Raby United in February 1928, scoring eighteen times in 43 games before being sold to Manchester City in August 1930 for £3,000. Carra’s unwelcome record 2010 - Jamie Carragher scored a club record eighth own goal as we beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Anfield, after Sotirios Kyrgiakos had headed in his third and last reds goal. Fernando Torres struck the winner, with all the goals coming in the second half. Martin Škrtel has since also put through his own net eight times. First and lasts 1959 - Louis Bimpson played his 102nd and final reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Portsmouth, with left-half Geoff Twentyman appearing for the 184th and last time. Ronnie Moran grabbed our goal early on in this Second Division fixture. 1903 – Full-back Joseph Hoare made the first of his seven senior appearances in our 3-1 top-flight defeat of Derby County at Anfield. Richard Morris, Jack Parkinson and Arthur Goddard bagged our goals. Another trophy 1956 – We beat Blackburn Rovers 2-0 at Anfield to secure the Lancashire Senior Cup for the eighth time, in a replay staged five months after the first meeting, also in L4. First and last caps 1925 - Tom Bromilow won his fifth and final cap for England as they held Northern Ireland to a goalless draw in the British International Championships at Windsor Park, with new reds signing David McMullan winning the first of his three caps for the home side, for whom Elisha Scott was in goal. 2013 – Jordan Rossiter debuted for England Under-17’s as they thumped Armenia 4-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Yerevan, with future red Dominic Solanke bagging his first goal at this level and Sheyi Ojo and future red Joe Gomez also in action. 2014 – Ben Woodburn played for Wales Under-17’s as they beat Montenegro 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Belarus. 2015 – Woodburn featured again at the same level, in a 1-0 defeat by Switzerland in Newport. On the same day, Bobby Adekanye bagged his only Under-17’s goal as the Netherlands thrashed Albania 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Wales. Losing to the Mancs 1981 - Terry McDermott netted from the spot as Manchester United returned down the East Lancs Road with all the points, having won 2-1. Kevin Moran opened the scoring with Arthur Albiston bagging a late winner as Graeme Souness appeared for the 200th time. Disappointment at Turf Moor 1967 - We drew 1-1 at Burnley with Chris Lawler on the scoresheet. 1914 - We did even worse, returning home on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline in another top-flight meeting, with keeper Ken Campbell playing his hundredth reds game. Ex-Evertonian Bertie Freeman bagged two of his nine goals against the reds, with Teddy Hodgson also on target for the home side. Thumping wins 1896 - We beat Blackburn Rovers 4-0 at Anfield in a top-flight match, with George Allan, Bill Michael, Jimmy Ross and Malcolm McVean all netting. Keeper Harry Storer saved a penalty from Rovers’ Anderson. 1942 – George Mills and Jack Balmer were on target as we won 4-1 in a Wartime League game at Manchester City, with Cyril Done netting twice. Venison back from Turkey 1995 - Barry Venison joined Southampton from Galatasaray for £850,000. He played thirty times for the Saints before retiring from the game a year later. Management departures 2011 - Steve Nicol left as head coach of New England Revolution by mutual consent, having been appointed permanently in November 2002. 2012 – Paul Jewell stepped down as Manager of Ipswich Town, also by mutual consent, having led them to 29 victories in 85 games in charge since taking over in January 2011. 2022 – Midfielder Kyle Kelly signed as a professional, having joined the Academy in September 2020. Young England reds 2008 – Future red Jonjo Shelvey bagged his only goal for England Under-17’s as they thumped Estonia 7-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Spain. 2012 – Jordon Ibe made his debut for England Under-18’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Italy in Mansfield. 2009 – Future reds Alisson Becker and Philippe Coutinho both featured for Brazil Under-17’s as they beat Germany 3-2 in a World Championship Finals game in Nigeria.
