Bienvenu Ibou 2021 – Centre-half Ibrahima Konaté signed from RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. for £36m, netting three times in ninety outings across his first three campaigns as he helped us to claim the FA Cup and two League Cups. He struck 22 times in 178 reds games, coming off the bench as we claimed the FIFA Club World Cup, while also being in the matchday squads as we claimed the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup, and playing an important role as we claimed our nineteenth League title in 2019/20. He signed for Brighton & Hove Albion in July 2020 once his contract with the reds had expired. 2022 – Young winger Ben Doak signed from Celtic for £600,000, while Fábio Carvalho arrived from Fulham for an initial £5m. Doak has made ten first-team appearances across his first two seasons at Anfield, while Carvalho scored three times in 21 games. He signed from Sunderland in March 1930 and made 87 appearances, scoring an impressive 26 times in his injury-affected time at Anfield. He moved on to Swindon Town in June 1934. 1957 – Short-lived Assistant Manager Sean O’Driscoll was born in Wolverhampton. He was appointed in July 2015, leaving following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers just three months later. European champions 2012 - Ex-reds Xabi Alonso, Álvaro Arbeloa and Fernando Torres all featured as Spain thumped Italy 4-0 in the Final of Euro 2012 in Kyiv, with Torres coming off the bench to score the third goal. Future red Mario Balotelli featured for the losing side. 2016 – Joe Allen featured for Wales as they beat Belgium 3-1 in Villeneuve-d’Ascq to reach the European Championships Semi-final. Enter his Lordship 2004 - Djibril Cissé officially arrived from Auxerre in a club record £14m deal. He bagged 24 goals in 79 reds games, including goals to help us to claim three trophies in his time at Anfield, moving on to Olympique de Marseille for £6.3m three years later. 2001 - He played for France Under-20’s as they lost 3-1 to Argentina in a World Championships Quarter-final in Buenos Aires, with Grégory Vignal and future red Maxi Rodríguez also in action. On the same day, future reds coach appeared in the same tournament as the Netherlands lost 2-1 to Egypt. Reds missed 2006 - Jamie Carragher’s retaken spot kick and Steven Gerrard’s effort were both saved as England crashed out to Portugal in their World Cup Quarter-final in Gelsenkirchen 3-1 on penalties after the game had ended goalless. Peter Crouch and future red Joe Cole also featured, with former Blue Wayne Rooney being sent off. Czeching out 2004 - Milan Baroš and Vladimír Šmicer both played in the Euro 2004 Semi-final as the Czech Republic lost 1-0 to Greece in Porto, thanks to a ‘silver goal’. All change 1999 - This was a busy day in the transfer market as Vladimír Šmicer arrived from Racing Club de Lens for £4.2m, while we also gained and lost a player on the Bosman ruling. Luis on target 2007 – Future red Luis Suárez scored for Uruguay Under-20’s against ex-red Antonio Barragán’s Spain as their World Championship Finals group game ended 2-2 in Canada. On the same day, Mark González faced future red Alexander Doni as Brazil beat Chile 3-0 in a Copa América group game in Venezuela. 2019 – Sadio Mané bagged a brace, including a penalty, as Senegal beat Kenya 3-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in Egypt. He also saw another spot-kick saved. Wedding bells 1972 - Emlyn Hughes married Barbara. They remained happily married until Emlyn’s sad death in November 2004, with two children called Emma and Emlyn. 2005 - Jamie Carragher married his fiancée Nicola Holt at Weston Park, while on the same day Harry Kewell settled his libel case against Gary Lineker out of court. Meanwhile, Sammy Lee was appointed Assistant Manager of Bolton Wanderers. Mighty Mouse on the way back 1980 - Kevin Keegan returned to England, joining Southampton for £400,000 in a move that had been announced five months earlier. He had struck 32 goals in ninety Bundesliga games, helping them to a League and Cup double in 1979, as well as twice claiming the European Footballer of the Year award while in Germany. Other new managers 1981 - Emlyn Hughes was appointed Player/Manager of Rotherham United. He was in charge for nearly two years but was sacked as they headed towards the old Third Division. 2000 – Karl-Heinz Riedle was replaced as Manager of Fulham by Jean Tigana, having been in temporary charge for three months. 1995 - John Toshack took over as Deportivo La Coruña boss, having been appointed four months previously. He remained in charge for nineteen months before resigning. 2019 – Future reds boss Arne Slot started work as Feyenoord boss, going on to win 98 times in 150 games in charge. 2021 – Slot took over at AZ Alkmaar. He was sacked in December 2020 having already agreed his move to Feyenoord. He led Alkmaar to 32 victories in 58 matches. World Cup progress 1990 - John Barnes started England’s dramatic 3-2 extra-time defeat of Cameroon in the World Cup Quarter-final in Naples. He was replaced at half-time by fellow red Peter Beardsley, while his future clubmate Mark Wright played the full two hours. On the same day, future red Karl-Heinz Riedle featured in West Germany’s 1-0 win over Czechoslovakia in Milan, to set up their Semi-final clash with England. 2018 – Dejan Lovren played as Croatia knocked Denmark out on penalties to reach the Quarter-finals in Russia. Ex-red Iago Aspas also featured as Spain beat the host nation after a shoot-out at the same stage. 2014 – Future red Divock Origi featured in Belgium’s 2-1 defeat of the USA in Salvador, while ex-red Javier Mascherano played as Argentina needed extra time to see off future red Xherdan Shaqiri’s Switzerland 1-0 in São Paulo to reach the Quarter-finals. 2011 – Mascherano played for his country again as host nation Argentina drew 1-1 with Bolivia in a Copa América group game in La Plata. On the same day, reserves centre-back Stephen Sama signed a new contract with the reds. He moved on to VfB Stuttgart in September 2014 without making a senior first-team appearance. 2013 – Goalie Adrián signed for West Ham United, playing 150 times before joining the reds for free in August 2019. 2015 – Keeper Péter Gulácsi joined RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. from Red Bull Salzburg for £3m after helping them to claim consecutive Austrian League and Cup doubles. 2017 – Centre-half Ozan Kabak signed as a professional for Galatasaray, playing eighteen times without scoring before moving to VfB Stuttgart in January 2019. Martin born 1984 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel was born in Handlová. The tough Slovakian signed from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m in January 2008 to become our most expensive defender to date. He notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016. Unfortunately, he also put through his own net a joint club record eight times. 2010 - He skippered the side for the first time as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Utrecht in our final UEFA Europa League group game. Dirk Kuyt played his fiftieth European game for the reds as the 37,800 crowd was boosted by free kids’ tickets. Forward Nathan Eccleston played his ninth and last reds game. Shaggy’s debut 1990 - Steve McManaman made his reds bow as we beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from John Barnes and Ian Rush, who was making his 300th appearance for the reds. He went on to make a total of 364 reds appearances, netting 66 times. Arnell’s treble 1956 - Alan Arnell bagged a treble as we won 3-0 at Bill Shankly’s Huddersfield Town in a Second Division fixture. Most recently 2013 – We secured our record win at White Hart Lane as we comprehensively thumped Tottenham Hotspur 5-0, despite being without skipper Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge. Captain for the day Luis Suárez bagged a brace, with Jon Flanagan netting his only reds goal. Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling also struck as Paulinho was sent off for the home side in the second half. The game proved to be André Villas-Boas’ last game in charge of the home side. 2012 – Aston Villa won 3-1 at Anfield, with future red Christian Benteke bagging a brace, the first of his seven goals past us to date, and Andreas Weimann also netting before Steven Gerrard struck a late consolation. Goalless again 2005 - The reds set a new club record of eleven consecutive clean sheets as we beat the Costa Rican side Deportivo Saprissa 3-0 in the Semi-final of the FIFA Club World Championship TOYOTA Cup Japan 2005 in Yokohama. Peter Crouch grabbed a brace with Steven Gerrard also on target. Rafael Benítez had heard of the death of his father in the build-up to the match but elected to stay in Japan. Winning in Belgium 1965 - We beat Standard de Liège 2-1 at their Stade Maurice Dufrasne in the European Cup Winners’ Cup to progress to the Second Round, 5-2 on aggregate. Roger Hunt and Ian St. John netted for the reds as we came from behind to win. Happy birthday Alf 1881 - Right-back Alf West was born in Nottingham. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield prior to the First World War, first arriving from Barnsley St. Peter’s in November 1903 for £500. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. In comes Wilson 1897 - Wing-half Charlie Wilson signed from Stockport County on a free transfer. He bagged three goals in 91 reds games before becoming a Scout at Anfield in 1905, a role he held until the Second World War. The light went out 2002 - We suffered our fourth straight League defeat of the season as Milan Baroš’s strike was not enough to save us from a 2-1 defeat by Sunderland at the Stadium Of Light, despite Chris Kirkland’s penalty save from former Blue Gavin McCann, who had already scored, with Michael Proctor also on target. Big top-flight Anfield wins 1906 - We trounced Notts County 5-1, with Sam Raybould bagging a brace to add to an Alex Raisbeck penalty, and goals from Bill McPherson and Robert Robinson. This was the fourth consecutive home game in which we had notched at least five goals. Jock Montgomery was sent off for the visitors for a bad foul on Raybould. 1934 - Gordon Hodgson struck twice as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-1, with Berry Nieuwenhuys and Vic Wright also on target. Mixed fortunes against the Bluebirds 1923 - We lost 2-0 at home to Cardiff City as they were en route to finishing second in the League, their highest ever position. Left-half Jack Bamber made his eightieth and final reds appearance in this game, with outside-left Fred Hopkin reaching a century of League games for us. Joe Clennell struck the last of his seven goals against the reds, with Jimmy Gill netting one of his six. 1924 - We won 3-1 at Ninian Park, as Dick Forshaw nabbed a brace and Danny Shone also scored, with Jimmy Gill again on target for the Bluebirds. This was actually the eighth consecutive match in which Forshaw had been on target, as he netted a total of ten in this period. Forward Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers was playing his 200th reds game. Thumped at Villa Park 1976 - Aston Villa consigned us to our biggest defeat in a decade by winning 5-1 at Villa Park, with all of the goals coming before the break. Andy Gray struck the first two of his four goals past us, with John Deehan nabbing the first two of his five. Brian Little also netted with Ray Kennedy grabbing our consolation. Ian Callaghan made his 600th League appearance. 1984 - We returned to the Midlands, coming home with a goalless draw. All white 1973 - The reds turned out in all-white at Carrow Road, with Peter Cormack on target as we were held 1-1. This kit was worn despite there being no clash with Norwich City’s usual yellow and green combination, and in spite of the snow on the pitch that made the white shirts harder to spot. International goalscorers 1982 - A whole host of reds scored for their countries in European Championships qualifiers. Kenny Dalglish bagged a brace as Scotland beat Belgium 3-2 at the Stade du Heysel in Brussels, with one strike later being named as the BBC’s Goal of the Season. Graeme Souness skippered the side, which also included Alan Hansen. On the same day, Phil Neal netted as England thumped Luxembourg 9-0 at Wembley. Sammy Lee won his second cap in this game, with ex-red Ray Clemence in goal. Joey Jones won his first cap as a Chelsea player, and his 48th in total, as Wales drew 4-4 with Yugoslavia in Titograd. He bagged his only international goal in this game, while Ian Rush was also on target, scoring in his fourth straight international. 1994 – Ex-red István Kozma played for Hungary as they lost a friendly 5-1 in Mexico. Other reds games 1962 – Ian St. John and Roger Hunt netted as we won 2-1 at Blackpool. 1951 – We won 3-1 at Portsmouth with Duggie Reid scoring the last of his six goals against the reds. Billy Liddell struck either side of a Jack Smith goal. 1928 – Gordon Hodgson was on target as Blackburn Rovers held us to a 1-1 draw in L4 after Tommy McLean had bagged one of his five goals past us. 1900 – Jack Cox bagged the only goal of Bury’s visit to Anfield. Youngsters in action 1976 - David Fairclough won his only Under-21’s cap as England were held to a goalless draw by Wales at Molineux. On the same day, future red Avi Cohen played for Israel in their 3-1 friendly defeat by Austria in Tel-Aviv. 2003 - Future red Javier Mascherano played for Argentina Under-20’s as they lost 1-0 to Brazil in a World Championships Semi-Final in Abu Dhabi. 2019 – Future red Bobby Clark won the first of his two caps for England Under-15’s in their 6-3 defeat by Turkey at St. George’s Park. On the move 2022 – Midfielder Michael Laffey signed pro terms with the reds, having arrived from Everton as an Under-10’s player. 2020 – It was announced that future reds boss Arne Slot would become Head Coach of Feyenoord the following July. Jimmy’s treble 1975 - Jimmy Case scored a hat-trick as we beat Polish side Slask Wroclaw 3-0 at Anfield in our UEFA Cup Third Round second leg tie, with Ray Clemence a virtual spectator, to progress 5-1 on aggregate on our way to claiming the trophy for the second time. 3,000 up 1949 - Willie Fagan struck our 3,000th League goal as we lost 3-2 at Huddersfield Town, with Ken Brierley also on target. Vic Metcalfe netted the first of his six goals against the reds, with John McKenna and Jeff Taylor also on the scoresheet. If you like Croatian players 2000 - Igor Bišcan made his reds bow as a substitute for Christian Ziege as a Marcus Stewart goal handed Ipswich Town victory at Anfield. This came just three days after his arrival in L4. Derby stalemate 2017 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Everton. Mohamed Salah put us ahead before the break, but Wayne Rooney equalised from the spot when a soft penalty was awarded against Dejan Lovren, the last of his seven goals past us. Also recently 2019 – We won 2-0 at Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League to ensure we topped the group. Two more legends honoured 2007 - Peter Beardsley and Graeme Souness were both inducted into the Football Museum’s Hall of Fame. Beardsley won two League titles, the FA Cup, and two FA Charity Shields while at Anfield, as well as 59 England caps and a ‘new’ Second Division title with Fulham. An epic swindle 2010 – The sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures under the leadership of John W. Henry was completed, after a chaotic few days of court cases. On the same day, Jamie Carragher signed a contract extension tying him to the club until 2013, while future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil both played as Germany Under-17’s won a European Championships qualifier 5-0 in Estonia. Michael at the treble 1983 - Michael Robinson netted a hat-trick, his first League goals for the reds, as we won 3-1 at West Ham United, despite Craig Johnston being sent off just after the hour mark. Billy Bonds made his 700th West Ham appearance in this game, as we closed the gap on the second-placed Hammers to two points. Meanwhile, future red Gini Wijnaldum struck as the Dutch Under-21’s beat Slovakia 2-0 in a European Championships qualifying play-off. 2002 - A trio of reds youngsters scored in European Under-21 Championships qualifiers. Daniel Sjölund struck as Finland drew 3-3 with Serbia & Montenegro in Smederevo. Meanwhile, Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle were both in target in France’s 3-0 win in Malta. This was Le Tallec’s first goal at this level, while Flo was netting in his third consecutive Under-21’s appearance. Alou Diarra also played, as all three won their fourth caps at this level. A Norwegian nightmare 1974 - We secured our record victory, thumping Norwegians Strømsgodset 11-0 at Anfield in our opening game of that season’s European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign. Midfielder Brian Hall was the only outfield player not to score, with Phil’s Boersma and Thompson grabbing a brace apiece. For the record, our other goals that day came from an Alec Lindsay penalty, Steve Heighway, Peter Cormack, Emlyn Hughes, Tommy Smith, Ian Callaghan and Ray Kennedy. Phil Taylor bagged our consolation, with George Hunt nabbing two of his five goals against us, and Jackie Roberts also on target for the Trotters. 2015 – Midfielders Cameron Brannagan and Pedro Chirivella both made their reds debuts as we drew 1-1 with Girondins de Bordeaux in our UEFA Europa League group game with keeper Simon Mignolet reaching a century of reds games. Adam Lallana struck our goal in France. Two-ton Bob 2019 – Forward Roberto Firmino played his 200th reds game as we eventually lost our UEFA Champions League group game 2-0 at SSC Napoli, so losing our first game as holders from the previous season. Dries Mertens' penalty and a late Fernando Llorente goal condemned us to defeat with the match still goalless with ten minutes remaining. To and from Upton Park 1993 - We undertook a complex transfer deal with West Ham United. Julian Dicks arrived at Anfield, with David Burrows, Mike Marsh and £1.5m heading in the opposite direction. None of them lasted much beyond a year at their new club. Signing on 2007 – Centre-half Daniel Ayala signed from Sevilla for £160,000. He made five senior appearances, sitting on the bench on a further eleven occasions before moving to Norwich City for £850,000 in August 2011. 1992 – Defender Torben Piechnik signed from F.C. We played like girls.” 1983 - Future red Steve McMahon was dismissed as Aston Villa lost 2-1 at Anfield, thanks to second-half goals from Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush as we extended our unbeaten run to the first six League games of that season. Colin Gibson netted for the Villains. Another defeat at the Bridge 2006 - We lost 1-0 at Chelsea, despite Michael Ballack being sent off for the home side. This was our fifth straight League defeat against the Blues. Didier Drogba struck one of his eleven goals against the reds. Red birthdays 1864 - Right-back Andrew Hannah was born in Renton, joining the reds from his hometown club in May 1892. He was the first ever captain of the club, and cousin of inside-left Davy Hannah who also turned out for the reds in the 1890’s. Andrew made 69 reds appearances, netting once as he led us to the Lancashire League and Second Division titles in his first two seasons at Anfield. 2003 – Midfielder Luca Stephenson was born in Sunderland. He signed pro terms in September 2020. First win at The Dell 1966 - We finally won at The Dell, at our seventh attempt, as Ian’s St. John and Callaghan scored in our 2-1 victory as Ron Yeats played his 200th League game for the reds. 1985 - We also faced the Saints, when Jan Mølby and Kenny Dalglish struck as we won our Screen Sport Super Cup match 2-1 at Anfield, with Danny Wallace on target for the visitors. Mixed fortunes in Europe We have played two other European ties on this day, without securing a win, although the seasons were both successful in the end. 1975 - We lost 1-0 at Hibernian in our first game of that victorious UEFA Cup campaign, with the goal scored by former Evertonian Joe Harper. Full-back Chris Lawler played his 549th and last reds game. 1980 - Terry McDermott netted our goal as we were held 1-1 at Finnish champions Oulun Palloseura. Forward beginning and end 1910 - Joseph Brough bagged the first of his three reds goals as we lost 3-2 at home to Nottingham Forest, with ‘Wee’ Ronald Orr also on target. Grenville Morris nabbed one of his six strikes past us, with JB Ford and Harry Lockett also netting. 1898 – Fred Geary played his 45th and final reds game in our 1-0 top-flight victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield, with Jack Cox on target. Twice against the Iron We faced Sc***horpe United in the Second Division on this day in consecutive years. 1959 - We drew 1-1 at the Old Show Ground, with Jimmy Melia nabbing our goal. 1960 - Jimmy Harrower, Tommy Leishman and Roger Hunt netted as we won 3-2 at Anfield. Big Anfield wins 1904 - We thumped Bradford City 4-1 in a Second Division meeting, thanks to a Jack Cox brace, Dickie Morris’s fifth and last reds strike and a Maurice Parry goal. 1923 – Forwards Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers and Jimmy Walsh each scored a hat-trick as we thumped Preston North End 7-3 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie, with Dick Forshaw also netting. 1927 - Willie Devlin netted twice as we beat Derby County 5-2 in the top flight, with Jock McNab bagging his sixth and last reds goal and Gordon Hodgson and Dick Edmed also on the scoresheet. Harry Bedford bagged a brace for the Rams, two of his nine strikes against us. Keeper Elisha Scott played his 300th League game for the reds. 1928 – Albert Whitehurst bagged a treble as we thumped Bury 6-1 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at Anfield. Dick Edmed added a brace, with Kelly also on target. Another first 1892 – We played our first game in the Lancashire Senior Cup, beating Southport Central 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Tom Wyllie and John Smith. Double ton 1932 - Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw played his hundredth reds League game as we won 1-0 at Middlesbrough thanks to a Gordon Gunson strike, with inside-left Archie McPherson reaching a century of games for clubs in all competitions. Fabs at the Olympics 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil as they lost 3-1 to South Africa in an Olympics group game in Brisbane. Youngsters starting out 2003 - Unione Sportiva Triestina’s Alberto Aquilani bagged his only goal at this level while winning his first Under-20’s cap in Italy’s 2-0 defeat of Romania. 1998 – Future red Christian Poulsen won the first of his four caps for Denmark Under-19’s as they thumped Switzerland 4-0 in a friendly in Vejle. Youngsters on the world stage 2001 - Fernando Torres played for Spain Under-17’s as they lost 1-0 to Burkina Faso in the World Championship Finals in Trinidad. Unfortunately, they also lost their third group game to crash out at this stage. Fellow future red Javier Mascherano featured for Argentina in the same tournament as they beat Oman 3-0 as they went on to top the same group. Digger in charge 2008 – John Barnes was named as Manager of Jamaica. He took over that November, moving on in June 2009 to take charge of Tranmere Rovers. Other reds games 2000 – Steven Gerrard netted as we drew 1-1 at West Ham United, with Paolo Di Canio scooring for the home side. 1955 – We lost a Second Division fixture 3-1 at Leicester City, with Billy Liddell on the scoresheet. 1949 – We won 3-2 at Birmingham City. Billy Liddell struck twice after Cyril Done had opened the scoring. 1947 – We lost 2-0 at Charlton Athletic. 1921 – Harry Chambers struck as Sheffield United held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with Fred Tunstall nabbing the first of his eight goals against the reds. On the move again 1999 - Ex-loanee Mark Prudhoe joined Darlington on loan from Bradford City, ten years after he had first joined the Quakers. However, he did not make a senior appearance this time around. 2010 - Péter Gulácsi rejoined Tranmere Rovers on loan, playing fourteen times in this second spell. 2020 – Aussie left-back Brad Smith signed for Seattle Sounders, having been on loan since August 2018. 22021 – Scouse keeper Oscar Kelly signed pro terms with the reds, having been at the Academy since Under-9’s level. Future reds in international action 1978 – Gary Gillespie played for Scotland Under-21’s as they beat a senior USA side 3-1 in a friendly at Pittodrie. 2006 – Astrit Ajdarević appeared for Sweden Under-17’s in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying win in Greece. 2010 – Emre Can represented Germany Under-17’s as they beat Israel 2-0 in a friendly in Villingen-Schwenningen. 2015 – Ex-red Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-17’s as they drew a friendly 1-1 with the Czech Republic.
