Happy birthday Uncle Roy 1948 - Roy Evans was born in Bootle. One of the club’s greatest servants, he served as fan, left-back, reserves coach, Assistant Manager and then finally the top job for four years. He only made eleven first team appearances before injury cut his career short, but his time as reserves boss was incredibly successful, leading them to eleven Central League titles, including seven in nine seasons. However, his time as the main man was less glittering, as he could only claim one Coca Cola Cup. 1963 - Ronnie Rosenthal was born in Haifa. The Israeli forward made an instant impact on his arrival on loan in March 1990, with Kenny Dalglish saying, “Ronnie gave us the momentum. It was that which helped us to win the Championship.” He signed from Standard de Liège permanently that June for £1m and scored a total of 22 times in 97 reds games before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £250,000 after four years at Anfield. 1927 - Wing-half Bryan Williams was born in Liverpool. He netted five times in 34 reds games after arriving from South Liverpool at the end of the Second World War, moving on to Crewe Alexandra in May 1954, where he became a regular. 2001 – Midfielder Matteo Ritaccio was born in New York. He arrived at the Academy in August 2018, signing as a professional fifteen months later. However, he was released in January 2024. Farewell Brendan 2015 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park, with boss Brendan Rodgers getting the sack later that same day. Danny Ings headed us into the lead but Romelu Lukaku equalised just four minutes later, on the stroke of half time, the most recent of his five strikes past us to date. Rodgers had led us to 85 victories in his 166 games in charge, failing to win any silverware but guiding us to within a whisker of claiming the League title in 2013/14. A big day for Jones 1991 - Full-back Rob Jones signed from Crewe Alexandra for £300,000. The grandson of post-war utility man Bill made his reds bow just two days later, going on to play 243 times for the reds, before injury ended his career, famously failing to ever find the net in his time at Anfield. 1995 – He was sent off in our League Cup Second Round second leg at Sunderland after a rash tackle on Michael Gray. The home side’s Martin Smith was also dismissed after retaliating. Robbie Fowler bagged the only goal of the game to send us through 3-0 on aggregate. We wore the curious kit of gold shirts and green shorts to avoid a colour clash. Off the mark 2014 – Adam Lallana bagged his first reds strike to open the scoring on the stroke of half time as we beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at Anfield. Saido Berahino equalised from the spot after the break, but Jordan Henderson struck the winner. Red centurions 2022 – James Milner played his 300th reds game, and fiftieth for the reds in the UEDA Champions League, with Trent Alexander-Arnold also reaching that milestone in the competition as we beat Rangers 2-0 in a group game at Anfield. Trent opened the scoring from a free-kick, with Mohamed Salah converting a second-half penalty after Luis Díaz was fouled. Ouch 1998 - Pierluigi Casiraghi netted his only Chelsea strike. Phil Babb attempted to prevent the goal but only succeeded in wrapping his legs around a post at the Anfield Road end, causing grown men around the ground to wince in sympathy, and he was taken off shortly after. Jamie Redknapp equalised for the reds late on. 2009 – We lost 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, thanks to the last of Nicolas Anelka’s five strikes against the reds and a Florent Malouda goal. Italian despair 2012 – Jonjo Shelvey headed us in front against Udinese in a UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield, but the Italian side went 3-1 ahead thanks to Antonio Di Natale, a Sebastián Coates own goal and Giovanni Pasquale. Luis Suárez scored a late free-kick, but we still lost 3-2. Trebles for 1989 - Steve Staunton bagged a hat-trick as we beat Wigan Athletic 3-0 in an away League Cup tie that was switched to Anfield. He had come on in the second half as an emergency forward substitute after Ian Rush had limped off. 1941 - Cyril Done netted a treble in our 5-5 Wartime League draw at New Brighton, his third in consecutive games. Dicky Dorsett grabbed the other two. Out-gunned 2003 - We lost 2-1 at home to Arsenal, with Harry Kewell netting after a quarter of an hour, and Michael Owen suffering a shin injury. Sami Hyypiä unfortunately scored an own goal in his last game as official club captain, with Robert Pires bagging one of his four goals past us as the Gunners won for the 21st time at Anfield in the League, with only Everton responsible for us missing out on all the points more often. 1977 - We also faced the Gunners, holding them to a goalless draw at Highbury. Howard makes his way 1980 - Howard Gayle made his reds bow as a substitute for David Fairclough in a 3-0 win at Manchester City. Our goals came from Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Sammy Lee. Hat-tricks against 2020 – Ollie Watkins bagged a first-half treble as we lost 7-2 at Aston Villa behind closed doors, the first of his five goals against the reds to date. Mohamed Salah and Jack Grealish each struck twice, with these being the first of Grealish’s four goals past us so far, with John McGinn and ex-Blue Ross Barkley also on target. This was the first time we had conceded seven goals since April 1963 when we lost by the same score at Tottenham Hotspur. 1919 - Billy Hibbert scored a hat-trick for Newcastle United as they beat us 3-0 at St. James’ Park, the last of his thirteen goals past us. Outside-right Harold Wadsworth made his debut in this game while inside-right Fred Pagnam featured for the 39th and final time. Duncan off 1895 – Scottish left-back Duncan McLean was sold to St. Bernard's. He made his reds bow in our very first game having remained when Everton departed Anfield. He bagged four goals in 82 games, helping us to the Second Division title before returning north of the border to join Edinburgh St. Bernard’s in October 1895, with whom he won two full international caps. Happier days against the Geordies Our three other League meetings with Newcastle United on this day in history have all resulted in victories. 1961 - Kevin Lewis and Roger Hunt struck as we won 2-0 at Anfield, our twelfth straight game unbeaten since the start of this promotion season. 1952 - Jack Smith netted a brace as we won 5-3. Billy Liddell, Kevin Baron and Bob Paisley grabbed the other goals. George Robledo struck the last two of his five goals past us, with Ken Prior also netting for the visitors 1930 - We won 4-0 on Tyneside, thanks to a Jim Smith brace, Gordon Hodgson’s hundredth reds strike and outside-right Dick Edmed’s 46th and final reds goal. Shanks thumps the reds 1958 - Bill Shankly’s Huddersfield Town trounced us 5-0 at Leeds Road in a Second Division fixture. Alan A’Court made his 200th reds appearance in this game. Derek Hawksworth struck a brace, with Les Massie scoring one of his four goals against the reds, and Ken Taylor and Ramon Wilson also on the scoresheet. A derby win 1924 - Archie Rawlings struck the only goal of the game at Goodison Park after just three minutes. A fair old win 1967 - Ron Yeats and Roger Hunt were on target as we beat Swedish side Malmö FF 2-1 at Anfield in a Fairs Cup First Round match to progress 4-1 on aggregate. Dag Szepanski bagged a late consolation for the visitors. Mixed fortunes against the Owls 1902 - We beat The Wednesday 4-2 at Anfield thanks to a Sam Raybould brace, including a penalty, and goals from George Livingstone and Arthur Goddard. Harry Chapman scored one of his six goals past us, with Fred Spiksley nabbing the last of his four. Keeper Bill Perkins reached a century of League games for the reds. 1913 - We visited Owlerton in another top-flight encounter, with full-back Bob Crawford bagging our consolation from the spot as we were thumped 4-1. This was his only goal in 115 reds games, while outside-right Fred Staniforth was making the first of just three reds appearances while inside-right Jimmy Stewart appeared for the 63rd and final time. Sam Kirkman bagged one of his four goals against us, with Andre Wilson, George Robertson and Jack Burkinshaw all also netting. Internationals on target 1998 - Future red Milan Baroš netted for the Czech Republic Under-18’s in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying win in Armenia. 2001 - Future red El-Hadji Diouf struck as Senegal beat Japan 2-0 in a friendly on his home ground in Lens. Salif Diao also featured. On the same day, future reds coach Gary O’Neil played for England Under-19’s as they lost 1-0 to Russia in a friendly in Barnsley. 1947 – Future reds forward Sammy Smyth bagged a brace as Ireland beat Scotland 2-0 in the British International Championships at Windsor Park, with Billy Liddell on the losing side. Bosses against each other 1941 - Future reds boss Don Welsh netted as England beat Scotland 2-0 in a Wartime International at Wembley. Bill Shankly was on the losing side. Sami on home soil 1995 - Sami Hyypiä won his seventh cap for Finland, his first on home soil, as Turkey held them to a goalless friendly draw in Helsinki. It was his final cap as a Myllykosken Pallo-47 player, before he joined Willem II in the Netherlands. For Don 1951 - We took part in a testimonial match for Rhyl Athletic centre-forward Don Spendlove, with the reds winning 3-0 at Belle Vue. Jack Balmer struck twice with John Heydon also netting. Durnin for the reds 2006 - Liverpool and Celtic drew a charity legends match at Celtic Park 2-2, with the reds’ goals coming from John Durnin and Steve McManaman. On the same day, young Danish centre-back Daniel Agger was named as the PFA Fans Player of the Month for September. On the move 2006 - David Hodgson was sacked as Manager of Darlington after 51 victories in his 144 games in charge of this third spell with the Quakers. On the same day, Paul Ince’s playing contract with Swindon Town was cancelled by mutual consent, although he remained on the coaching staff for a few more weeks before taking over as Manager at Macclesfield Town. 2012 - Richard Money was appointed Cambridge United boss. He was sacked in November 2015, having guided them to the FA Trophy and promotion back into the Football League. 2013 – Ex-reds reserves forward Nathan Eccleston joined Carlisle United on loan from Blackpool, playing three times without scoring. 2022 – Right-back Josh Davidson signed pro terms with the reds, having been at the Academy since the age of six. Song at last 2000 - Rigobert Song skippered Cameroon, winning his final cap as a reds player and being booked as they drew a friendly with France 1-1 at the Stade de France. This was his 49th cap to date. Sad day 2010 – Joe Fagan’s widow Lil died at a nursing home in Lincolnshire, aged 92. 2016 – Welsh left-winger Mervyn Jones died. He was one of the smallest players to ever play for the club at just five feet four inches. He signed from Bangor City in November 1951, moving on to Southampton in July 1953 after just five reds outings. Other reds games 1986 – We beat Wimbledon 3-1 at Plough Lane. Ian Rush struck twice with Jan Mølby also netting, with all the goals coming in the second half. 1975 – Brian Hall and Jimmy Case struck as we beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 at Anfield. The visitors’ coach broke down on the M62, meaning they arrived at the ground less than half an hour before kick-off. 1969 – Nottingham Forest held us to a 1-1 draw in L4 as we benefitted from a Bob Chapman own goal. 1947 – We lost 3-1 at Middlesbrough with Jack Balmer scoring our goal. Mickey Fenton netted two of his nine goals past us, with Johnny Spuhler also on the scoresheet. Joe honoured 2011 – Future reds midfielder Joe Allen was named Young Player of the Year for 2010/11 at the FAW Awards. He moved on to Al-Ahli Saudi in Saudi Arabia in July 2023. Farewell to Shanks 1981 - Bill Shankly’s funeral was held at St. Mary’s Church in West Derby, Liverpool. His coffin was carried by four stalwarts from his reds teams - Ray Clemence, Emlyn Hughes, John Toshack and Ron Yeats - while the service fittingly ended with a moving rendition of YNWA. European centuries 2002 - Emile Heskey’s second goal of our 5-0 thumping of Spartak Moskva in a Champions League encounter at Anfield was our 400th goal in European competition. Bruno Cheyrou and Salif Diao both netted their first reds goals, with Sami Hyypiä also on target. 2019 – We played our hundredth home game in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League, eventually beating Salzburg 4-3 in a group game. We went three goals ahead through ex-Salzburg player Sadio Mané, Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah before Hwang Hee-Chan pulled a goal back before the break. Future red Takumi Minamino also netted before Erling Haaland levelled the scores after an hour. However, Salah bagged the winner. Other birthdays 1887 - Full-back Ephraim Longworth was born in Halliwell, Bolton. He played for the reds 370 times after signing from Leyton in June 1910 without ever finding the net, but helped us to two League titles and became the first Liverpool player to captain England. He then served as Reserve team trainer, before joining the ground staff. 1891 - Outside-right Archie Rawlings was born in Leicester. He struck ten times in his 67 reds games after signing from Preston North End in March 1924, where he had won one England cap, before moving on to Walsall in June 1926. 1958 - Reserves goalkeeper Bob Bolder was born in Dover. He signed from Sheffield Wednesday for £125,000 in 1983, after more than 200 games for the Owls. He never made our first team, but sat on the bench at the 1984 European Cup Final in Rome, one of seventeen times he did so in Europe's premier club competition, also doing so on four other occasions. He moved on to Sunderland the following year. 1990 – Former second-string custodian Dean Bouzanis was born in Sydney, Australia. He arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2007 and helped the reds to reach the FA Youth Cup Final in 2009. He spent much of the 2009/10 season on loan at League Two side Accrington Stanley, turning out nineteen times in total, and was released by the reds in April 2011. Youngest derby scorer 1937 - Tommy Lawton scored from the spot for Everton aged seventeen years and 362 days, the first of his six goals past us to become the youngest ever Merseyside derby goalscorer, helping to condemn us to a 2-1 defeat at Anfield. Berry Nieuwenhuys grabbed our late consolation, with Ben Dabbs playing his 56th and final reds game. Douglas Trentham had opened the scoring for the visitors. Chelsea despair 2005 - We were humbled 4-1 at home by Chelsea in a League game, with Steven Gerrard drawing us level after Djimi Traoré had conceded a penalty converted by Frank Lampard to hand the Blues the lead, one of his eight goals past us. Barry who? 1991 - Barry Jones made his only senior reds appearance as a substitute in our 1-0 defeat in Finland to Kuusysi Lahti in a UEFA Cup tie, although we progressed 6-2 on aggregate. This was our first European trip since the ban imposed after Heysel was lifted. Ex-Wimbledon striker Mike Belfield netted for the Finns on the night, while winger Jimmy Carter played his eighth and final reds game. A derby win 1909 - Jack Parkinson, Jimmy Stewart and Arthur Goddard all struck as we won 3-2 in the top flight at Goodison. Bertie Freeman and Tim Coleman each scored one of their nine goals past us. Representing the League 1963 - Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan both represented the Football League as they lost 2-1 to a League of Ireland side at Dalymont Park in Dublin. Beating the Lilywhites We have travelled to Deepdale to take on Preston North End three times on this day in history, without tasting defeat. 1915 - Fred Pagnam and Walter Wadsworth grabbed the goals as we won 2-1 in a Wartime League fixture. 1897 - We drew 1-1, with Harry Bradshaw on the scoresheet in his hundredth League outing. Chris Lawler made the first of 316 consecutive reds appearances in this game. 1999 - Our Premiership meeting at Villa Park ended goalless. Steve Staunton was laughably sent off in what was his hundredth League appearance for the reds by Rob Harris for a second bookable offence after half an hour having been wrongly adjudged not to have retreated ten yards at a free-kick. Steven Gerrard then superbly slotted in as our emergency left-back. Four against 1926 - Tom Jennings scored all Leeds United’s goals as they won 4-2 at Anfield in the top flight, four of his seven past us in all and the second of three consecutive League games in which he struck trebles. Dick Forshaw and Gordon Hodgson netted our goals. Double century 1976 – Kevin Keegan played his 200th League game for the reds as Middlesbrough held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. Twice against the Tangerines 1935 – We lost a Lancashire Senior Cup First Round tie 4-1 to Blackpool at Anfield, with Alf Hanson on target for the reds. 1946 – We drew 2-2 at Bloomfield Road at the same hurdle. Cyril Done struck twice, including once from the spot. Reds in Arabia 1978 - We drew 1-1 with the Saudi Arabian national side in a friendly in Jeddah with Kenny Dalglish grabbing our goal. Heading out 2020 – Forward Rhian Brewster was sold to Sheffield United after four reds outings, as the Blades paid a club record £23.5m. However, he failed to score in thirty appearances in his first season as they were relegated from the Premier League. 1990 - Second string midfielder Jim Magilton was sold to Oxford United for £100,000. He led them to tenth, eleventh and then fourth in the Conference National in his three seasons in charge. International beginning and end 1968 - Future red Jack Whitham won his only cap for England Under-23’s as a substitute in their 3-1 defeat of Wales at the Racecourse Ground. 2005 – Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin scored his last goal for Turkey Under-17’s as they lost 2-1 to the Netherlands in their World Cup Finals Third Place Play-off in Peru. Also in World Cup action 2009 - Martin Kelly played for England Under-20’s as they drew 1-1 with Uzbekistan in a World Championship Finals group game in Egypt, while future red Sebastián Coates featured in Uruguay’s 2-2 draw with Ghana in the same group. Other reds games 1993 – Arsenal held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1982 – We lost 1-0 at Ipswich Town with Mich D’Avray heading in late on. 1954 – We beat Notts County 3-1 in a Second Division match in L4 as Eric Anderson struck either side of a John Evans goal. 1948 – Derby County held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. The birth of the Kop 1906 - Work was begun on what became the most famous football terrace in the world, shortly after our second League title win. The Kop started life as a tinder bank, with Liverpool Echo journalist Ernest Edwards being responsible for comparing it to the Spion Kop, site of a famous battle in the Boer War. The name stuck! Strikers in and out 2017 – Forward Mohamed Salah agreed to sign from Roma for an initial €42m. He has scored a stunning 211 goals in 349 games across his first seven campaigns, helping us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield. 1973 – Forward Alan Waddle signed from Halifax Town for £40,000. He only made 22 appearances in his four years at Anfield, netting just once, at Goodison Park in December 1973, as his route to the first team was usually blocked by Kevin Keegan and John Toshack, although he was on the bench for the European Cup Final in 1977. He moved on to Leicester City that September. His cousin Chris went on to great things with Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Olympique de Marseille and England. 2022 - Sadio Mané was sold to Bayern München for an initial €32m, having struck 120 times in 269 outings and won the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup and League Cup since arriving from Southampton for an initial £30m in June 2016. On the same day, left-back Adam Lewis joined Newport County on loan and keeper Jakub Ojrzynski moved temporarily to Radomiak Radom. Happy birthdays 1993 – German keeper Loris Karius was born in Biberach an der Riss. He signed for £4.7m from 1. FSV Mainz 05 in July 2016, taking over the number one shirt. He made 49 first-team appearances, keeping 22 clean sheets but making several high-profile errors, with his contract expiring in the summer of 2022. 1993 – Recent third-choice keeper Danny Ward was born in Wrexham. His one season in his first spell in L4 was only a partial success, as he grabbed nine goals in 42 games, with his finest moment coming in the Camp Nou as he scored a crucial goal in our 2-1 victory to help us progress towards Athens. He moved on to West Ham United for £7.5m in July 2007, the Hammers’ record fee paid. However, he rejoined the reds in a free transfer from Manchester City in August 2011 for another season. 2013 – Luis Alberto signed from Sevilla for £6.8m, for whom he had only played nine first-team games, although he had spent the previous campaign on loan with Barcelona B. He only played twelve times in his first season, with only two of these appearances being from the start, as he struggled to break through to the first team. He spent two seasons on loan back in Spain, before joining S.S. Lazio for €4m in August 2016. 1934 – Forward Jack ‘Nipper’ Roberts moved on to Wigan Athletic. He only made one first team appearance after signing from Southport in May 1933. He was an all-round sportsman, even playing baseball for England. He became famous when he escaped from a prisoner-of-war camp in Italy, walking 400 miles to freedom despite a broken neck! 1898 – Keeper Willie Donnelly re-signed for Clyde, having played just eight senior reds games since arriving from the same club in May 1896. World Cup strikes 1998 - Michael Owen scored his first World Cup goal to draw England level against Romania in Toulouse. He later hit a post after England had gone behind again, but could not prevent them losing 2-1. Fellow red Paul Ince also played. 2014 – Future red Divock Origi scored his first senior goal in Belgium’s 1-0 defeat of Russia in a group game in Rio de Janeiro. Seventh heaven 2006 - We thumped Birmingham City 7-0 at St. Andrews in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, our record away victory in the competition, and our biggest win to that date under Rafael Benítez. Sami Hyypiä put us in front in the first minute, with Peter Crouch soon also scoring with his head, to get on target in his third consecutive game. Crouch added a third just before the break, with substitute Fernando Morientes scoring on the hour. John Arne Riise belted in our fifth, with Olivier Tebily’s own goal and a shot from another sub, Djibril Cissé, completing the rout. Momo Sissoko made his comeback from his eye injury at SL Benfica a month earlier, while attempting to wear a set of protective goggles! New boss 1951 – Don Welsh took over as the club’s Manager. He had guested for the reds during the Second World War, and was in charge at Anfield for 232 games. He has the indignity of being our first Manager to be sacked, in May 1956, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, before failing to lead us back to the promised land. European victories 1984 - A superb reds victory came as we won 4-1 at SL Benfica, then led by Sven-Göran Eriksson, in the second leg of our European Cup Third Round tie. Beaten down the East Lancs 2010 - We lost 2-1 at Manchester United as Fernando Torres headed us in front before Wayne Rooney converted the rebound of a penalty saved by Pepe Reina, one of his seven goals past us. Ji-Sung Park struck the winner after an hour with Torres and Yossi Benayoun both wasting good chances to draw us level. Signing on 1995 - Mark Kennedy signed from Millwall for £1.5m. He joined from his hometown club in the summer of 2016 and has struck once in 29 solid senior appearances by the time of his 27th birthday. 1929 – Scottish centre-forward Sam Shields was born in Denny, Stirlings. He signed from Cowdenbeath in May 1949, only playing once before joining Airdrieonians in July 1951. 1918 – Winger Harman van den Berg was born in Cape Town. He signed from South African side Peninsular in October 1937, but only managed to score three times in nineteen games before injuries and the Second World War intervened. 1886 - John Bovill was born in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. He had been in charge since July 1981. 2010 - Steve Staunton was dismissed as Darlington boss, having led them to just four victories in 25 games in charge, although they still went on to finish rock bottom of League Two. Aldo’s debut 1987 - John Aldridge made his reds debut as a substitute for goalscorer Craig Johnston in our 2-2 League draw at Aston Villa, with Paul Walsh bagging his 37th and final reds goal. Villa’s Paul Elliott also struck as Mark Lawrenson put through his own net. Aldo went on to net 63 goals in 104 reds games. 1948 – Right-winger Alex Muir made his reds bow as Middlesbrough won 1-0 in L4 with Micky Fenton bagging the last of his nine goals past us late on. Another win at Camp Nou 2007 - We came from behind to win 2-1 at Barcelona in the first leg of our Champions League Round of 16 meeting. The game was played in the aftermath of a stormy bonding trip to Portugal, with Craig Bellamy allegedly attacking John Arne Riise with a golf club. Perhaps inevitably, it was these two players who struck our goals, with Bellamy celebrating what was to be the final strike of his first reds spell with an imaginary golf swing! Riise’s winner was our 250th goal in the European Cup. Dirk Kuyt hit the crossbar with the home side’s goalscorer Deco also striking the woodwork for the home side. The end of a great career 1934 - Legendary keeper Elisha Scott made his 468th and final reds appearance in a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea, giving a farewell speech to the crowd from the Directors’ box at the end of the match! His career had spanned an amazing 21 years and 52 days. Hughie Gallacher netted the last of his eight goals against the reds, with Eric Oakton also on target as right-back Willie Steel reached a century of reds outings. 1981 – Avi Cohen played his 24th and final reds game as we drew 2-2 in a League game at Brighton & Hove Albion. David Johnson and Terry McDermott netted our goals, with future red Michael Robinson and Gordon Smith scoring for the Seagulls. Sami’s record 2006 - Sami Hyypiä made his 57th consecutive European appearance, a club record for an outfield player. Unfortunately, we lost 1-0 at SL Benfica in the first leg of our Champions League round of sixteen tie. This was the fourth time we had faced the Portuguese side in European competition, more than any other club. We set a new European clean sheet club record of 573 minutes before conceding our hundredth goal in the European Cup, when Luisão headed home late on at the Estádio da Luz. Of even greater concern was the serious eye injury suffered by Momo Sissoko in an innocuous challenge with Beto, which fortunately only kept him out for a month in the end. Kenny steps down 1991 - Kenny Dalglish resigned as reds boss in a board meeting at Anfield. He had been in charge for nearly six years, leading us to the double in his first season, and a further two League titles, FA Cup, two FA Charity Shields and Screen Sport Super Cup. The pressures of management, and his role in counselling players, supporters and the city of Liverpool in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster led to him stepping down. Hitting the Canaries for six 1979 - We crushed Norwich City 6-0 in the League despite their five-man defence, with both Alan and Ray Kennedy getting on the scoresheet. Kenny Dalglish and David Johnson added a brace apiece. Harvey’s ton 2024 – Harvey Elliott reached a century of reds games as we thumped Luton Town 4-1 at Anfield, despite the Hatters leading at half time through Chiedozie Ogbene'’s header. Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo headed in in quick succession to give us the lead. Luis Díaz struck before Elliott rounded off the scoring, with Jayden Danns making his reds bow as a late substitute. Bowing out 2013 – We beat Zenit St. Petersburg 3-1 at Anfield in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 32 tie but crashed out on away goals. Jamie Carragher, playing his 150th and last game in Europe, gifted Hulk the ball who gave the visitors the lead. Luis Suárez struck brilliant free-kicks either side of Joe Allen’s goal, but the final decisive goal did not come. Daniel Agger reached 200 reds appearances in this game. 2023 - Mohamed Salah became the club’s outright all-time top scorer in Europe, bagging his 42nd in continental competition inside a quarter of an hour as we raced into an early two-goal lead over the holders Real Madrid in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie at Anfield, after Darwin Núñez had opened the scoring. Vinícius Júnior struck twice to level the game at half time, the most recent of his five goals past us. Éder Militão headed in shortly after the break, with Karim Benzema bagging a brace to secure a 5-2 win, two of his seven strikes against us to date. On our way to Wembley 1988 - A Ray Houghton header saw off Everton at Goodison Park in a live televised FA Cup Fifth Round meeting as we headed towards Wembley yet again. John Barnes debuted his new shaved head in this game! Signing on 1946 – Welsh keeper Cyril Sidlow signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £4,000. Farewell Alf 2004 - Former reds keeper Alf Hobson died in County Durham. He only made 28 senior appearances after signing from Shildon Colliery in April 1936, adding a further 171 reds games in Wartime football. Not on our way to Wembley 1970 - We were knocked out of the FA Cup in the Sixth Round, losing 1-0 at Second Division Watford thanks to Barry Endean’s diving header, in revenge for us knocking them out of the League Cup at Vicarage Road earlier that season. This game prompted Bill Shankly into rebuilding his reds side. Births and a death 1917 - Full-back Jim Harley was born in Methil, Fife. He failed to score in 131 reds appearances after signing from Hearts Of Beath in April 1934, helping us to the League title in 1947 before leaving the following year. 1990 – Brazilian ex-reserves forward Vitor Flora was born in São Joaquim da Barra. He signed from Botafogo on a free transfer in September 2008, returning to his native land to join to Goiás Esporte Clube in April 2010. 2007 – Centre-half Carter Pinnington was born. Hailing from Wirral, he signed pro terms in May 2024 having been at the Academy since Under-7’s level. 1956 – Chairman Will Harrop died. He had been in that role for six years from 1935, returning to the post in 1953. Edging towards the Final 1914 - We held West Ham United to a 1-1 draw in an FA Cup Third Round match, with Tom Miller on target and Syd Puddefoot bagging the first of his six strikes past us. We won the replay 5-1 as we eventually reached our first ever FA Cup Final that season. Beating the Brummies twice in the Cup Back in the 1920’s we twice knocked Birmingham City out of the FA Cup on this day, both times at Anfield at the Third Round stage. 1920 - Goals from Jackie Sheldon and Tom Miller handed us a 2-0 win, with the latter’s goal being his fiftieth reds strike while Sheldon reached a century of reds outings. 1925 - Archie Rawlings and Danny Shone netted as we won 2-1, with George Briggs nabbing the first of his ten goals against the reds. 2014 – Winger Jordon Ibe joined Birmingham City on loan, netting once in eleven outings. Transfer deadline day drama 2011 – We broke our record transfer twice in the same day, first when Luis Suárez arrived from Ajax for a fee of £22.8m. We then signed Andy Carroll for a British record £35m, with Fernando Torres then joining Chelsea for £50m, another British record. On the same day, left-back Paul Konchesky joined Nottingham Forest on loan while young midfielder Conor Thomas arrived from Coventry City on a temporary basis, although the move was not made permanent. Tons up 2017 – Centre-half Dejan Lovren reached a century of reds games as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Chelsea, with Simon Mignolet saving a Diego Costa penalty. David Luiz gave the visitors the lead with an opportunistic free-kick, with Gini Wijnaldum heading in after the break. 1920 – Right-back Ephraim Longworth played his 200th reds game as we won an FA Cup Second Round tie 2-0 at Luton Town thanks to a brace from Billy Lacey. Final strikes 2021 – Gini Wijnaldum bagged his 22nd and last goal for the club as we won 3-1 behind closed doors at West Ham United, after Mohamed Salah had nabbed a brace. 1959 – We beat Charlton Athletic 3-2 at The Valley as we fell behind to a John Hewie strike and Ronnie Moran own goal before left-half Geoff Twentyman missed a penalty for the reds. Deaths galore 1995 - Former Chairman Sir John Smith died of cancer in Gayton. He had overseen eleven League titles and four European Cups amongst our many honours during his seventeen years in charge of the club. 1965 – Full-back Percy Saul died. Peter Eastoe netted the last of his four goals against the reds, with Imre Varadi also on target. Cup victory 2004 - A Bruno Cheyrou brace, his final reds goals, took us past Newcastle United in the FA Cup Fourth Round at a noisy Anfield, as we won 2-1 with Laurent Robert scoring for the visitors. The Kop’s inspiration 1900 - The battle of Spion Kop took place, during the Boer War. It is from this battle, at which many British soldiers died including 320 Lancashire Fusiliers, that the Kop at Anfield, and several other grounds, gets its name. Michael Owen gave us an early lead, but United struck twice in the dying minutes, through one of Dwight Yorke’s eight goals past us and Ole Gunnar Solskjær. 1948 - We also lost to United at the same stage, going down 3-0 at Goodison Park. John Morris struck one of his seven goals past us, with Jack Rowley bagging one of his six and Charlie Mitten netting one of his five past us. 1953 – Half-back Jack Heydon made his 67th and last appearance for the club in our 3-1 defeat at Portsmouth, with Bob Paisley netting for the reds. Peter Harris bagged one of his eight goals against the reds, with Jimmy Scoular and Jack Henderson also on target. Rush hangs up his boots 1996 - Ian Rush played his final game for Wales, featuring in their 3-0 friendly defeat by Italy in Terni. It was his 73rd cap, in which time he scored 28 times, a Welsh record. Future red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon on the same day as they drew 3-3 with Angola in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in South Africa. Red births and death 1885 – Forward James Garside was born in West Gorton, Manchester. He signed from Accrington Stanley in March 1904, but only played five times without scoring before returning to Stanley in May 1906. 1889 – Keeper Augustus Beeby was born in Osmaston, Derbyshire. He joined the club in December 1908 but only made sixteen senior appearances before leaving for Manchester City in May 1911. 1909 - Forward Vic Wright was born in Bloxwich, Walsall. He struck 33 times in 85 reds games after signing from Rotherham United in March 1934. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in June 1937. 1975 - Outside-left Albert Pearson died in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He bagged four goals in 51 reds games following his capture from Port Vale in March 1919. He was only a red for two years, before returning to the Valiants. Avoiding a shock 1970 - Ray Smith struck for Fourth Division Wrexham to hand the Welsh side an interval lead in our FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield. Fortunately, Bobby Graham bagged a brace with Ian St. John also on target as we won 3-1, with ex-Robin Peter ‘Max’ Wall in the reds side. We went out at Watford in the Sixth Round that season. God signs on 1999 - Robbie Fowler signed a new four-year contract, worth around £30,000 per week. He said in his autobiography that this was “almost half what the papers said I was getting, not at all bad, though”. 2008 – Centre-half Andre Wisdom signed from Bradford City. He made 22 first-team appearances, netting on his debut at BSC Young Boys in September 2013. He left for Derby County for an initial £2m in July 2017. In comes Jordy 2007 - Young forward Jordy Brouwer signed from Ajax, having scored 28 times in the Dutch youth league the previous season. He stayed with the second string until joining RKC Waalwijk on loan in January 2009. Phil Jagielka equalised for the visitors with a wonder strike from distance in stoppage time. Three off in the derby 1999 - Sander Westerveld, Steven Gerrard and Everton’s Francis Jeffers were all sent off in our 1-0 derby defeat at Anfield. Steve Staunton went in goal for the final minutes, keeping a clean sheet and saving from future red Abel Xavier. Kevin Campbell netted the only goal of the game in the fourth minute, one of his four goals against us. Losing the European Cup 1978 - We lost our grip on the European Cup, being held to a goalless draw at Anfield by League champions Nottingham Forest, with ex-red Larry Lloyd dominant in the visitors’ defence. That was enough to take them through, as they had won the first leg 2-0 at the City Ground. Forest went on to claim the trophy that season, and then retain it the following year. 1924 - We also faced them in a First Division fixture at Anfield. He netted 285 times in 492 reds games after signing from Stockton Heath in July 1958, with his 245 League goals still a club record, and he has the distinction of being the first red to win the World Cup while at Anfield. His club medal haul includes two League championships, FA Cup, Second Division title and FA Charity Shield. Another Istanbul comeback 2006 - We raced into a 3-0 lead against Galatasaray in our UEFA Champions League group game at Anfield, thanks to a goal from Luis García surrounded by a stunning Peter Crouch brace that included an overhead bicycle kick. World stars 2009 – Keeper Dean Bouzanis played for Australia Under-20’s in the World Championship Finals in Egypt as they lost 2-1 to the Czech Republic. For Tom 1920 – A benefit game was staged for inside-right Tom Bennett against an International XI at Anfield. He had struck 77 times in seventy wartime games, but only made one first-class appearance before ill health forced his early retirement. He sadly died from tuberculosis in January 1923, aged just 31. Happy birthdays 1937 - Utility player Geoff Strong was born in Kirkheaton, Northumberland. He made 201 reds appearances after moving from Arsenal in November 1964 for a club record £40,000, netting 33 times and winning a League title medal and the FA Charity Shield the year after helping us to our first ever FA Cup triumph. He left the reds to join Coventry City for £29,500 in August 1970. Sadly, he died in June 2013 after suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. 2005 – Forward Lewis Koumas was born in Chester. He returned to Yorkshire in August 1963 to join Huddersfield Town. 1929 - Forward Tony Rowley was born in Porthcawl. He bagged a treble on his debut after signing from Stourbridge in October 1953, going on to net 38 times in 61 reds games. He moved to Third Division Tranmere Rovers in March 1958, continuing to score at a rate of one goal every other game. For Cally 1977 - A testimonial match for Ian Callaghan was staged at Anfield against Bill Shankly’s Lancashire XI. Cally scored in the reds’ 4-2 defeat, with our other score coming from an own goal. 1955 – A benefit match for left-back Eddie Spicer was held in front of 41,266 at Anfield, with a ‘Liverton’ side facing a Lancashire XI that included Bert Trautmann, Stanley Matthews and Don Revie. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving with the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to score twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title as well as playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg had ended his career in December 1953. Signing on 2020 - Diogo Jota signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £41m, with Ki-Jana Hoever moving in the opposite direction for an initial £9m after one goal in four senior games. Jota scored 56 times in 145 appearances in his first four seasons at Anfield, helping us to claim the FA Cup and League Cup. Hat-tricks 2010 – Dimitar Berbatov grabbed three of his five goals to date past us as we lost 3-2 at Manchester United. Steven Gerrard struck both our goals as we came from two goals behind, a free-kick and then one from the spot, but the home side struck a late winner. 1925 - Dick Forshaw bagged a treble in our 5-0 thumping of Manchester United at Anfield, with Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers and outside-right Archie Rawlings nabbing his tenth and last reds goal. He struck eight reds hat-tricks in all, including one against Everton a week later, and another against United eleven months later. 1931 - Legendary blue Dixie Dean bagged a treble as Everton beat the reds 3-1, three of his nineteen derby strikes, with centre-forward Dave Wright netting our consolation. 1953 - Louis Bimpson grabbed all four goals of our game against Burnley at Anfield to record our hundredth competitive hat-trick. Right-back Bert Childs played the first of just two reds games while Billy Liddell reached 300 outings for the club. European records 1967 - We played our first ever game in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, winning 2-0 at Swedes Malmö FF, thanks to a brace of headers from Tony Hateley. 1973 - Only 7,000 turned up for the opening game of our European Cup campaign at the Stade de la Frontière, the lowest attendance of any reds game in Europe, home or away, with some sources stating the gate to be as low as 5,000. Brian Hall opened the scoring, but we could only draw 1-1 with Luxembourg’s Jeunesse D’Esch with Gilbert Dussier nabbing a late equaliser. Last outings 2017 – Right-back Jon Flanagan and keeper Danny Ward both played their last reds games as we lost 2-0 at Leicester City in the Third Round of the League Cup, thanks to second-half goals from Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani. Defensive debutants 1910 - Legendary full-back Ephraim Longworth made his reds bow in our 2-0 defeat at Sheffield United, with Joe Kitchen bagging two of his eight goals against the reds, including one from the spot. Dirk again 2009 - Dirk Kuyt scored in his third consecutive reds game as we won a League game 3-2 at West Ham United. Fernando Torres bagged a brace as we twice saw a lead cancelled out, by Alesssandro Diamanti and then Carlton Cole, before he finally secured victory by heading home from a cross by substitute Ryan Babel. Sub at the double 1972 - Phil Boersma struck twice in our 5-1 thumping of Carlisle United at Anfield in a League Cup Second Round replay, so becoming our first goalscoring substitute in the competition, having replaced John Toshack with the game still scoreless. Kevin Keegan, Chris Lawler and Steve Heighway also netted, with Tommy Smith having a penalty saved. Another record for the Kop 1989 - The Kop was recorded for use on “Kenny D, The Pride Of Liverpool” by the Liverpool FC 1989 Squad featuring Peter Howitt as we thumped struggling Third Division outfit Wigan Athletic 5-2 in a League Cup tie. Glenn Hysén headed us in front before a thunderous Bryan Griffiths free-kick levelled the match. David Thompson then sensationally put the visitors ahead on 55 minutes before Ian Rush grabbed a brace, with Peter Beardsley and John Barnes also netting, although he also had a penalty saved by keeper Nigel Adkins. This was Digger’s hundredth reds game. More derby disappointment We have faced our neighbours from across the park on four more occasions on this day in history, without securing a victory. 1936 - We lost 2-0 away, thanks to an Alex Stevenson goal and the last of Dixie Dean nineteen derby strikes. 1964 – We were thumped 4-0 at home in another top-flight meeting, with ex-red Johnny Morrissey, Derek Temple, Fred Pickering and Colin Harvey on target. Centre-half Alex Raisbeck played his 300th League game for the reds. 1959 - Louis Bimpson played his hundredth reds game in our 2-1 Second Division win at Derby County, thanks to goals from Alan A’Court and Roger Hunt, while Ronnie Moran played his 200th League game for the club. 1998 – Dominic Matteo reached a century of reds games as Charlton Athletic held us to a 3-3 draw at Anfield. Richard Rufus headed the visitors in front, before Robbie Fowler equalised from the spot. Clive Mendonca restored the Addicks’ lead with goals from Patrik Berger and Fowler again putting us ahead. However, Steve Jones nabbed a late leveller as the reds produced a nightmare defensive performance. A youthful hat-trick 2001 - Florent Sinama-Pongolle bagged a treble for France in their 5-1 defeat of Japan at the Under-17 World Championships in Tobago, with club-mate Anthony Le Tallec also in the team. The French therefore qualified for the knock-out phase, going on to win the tournament. 2007 – Future reds reserves forward Nikola Sarić was on target for Denmark Under-17’s as they beat the Ukraine 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Galway, with future reds centre-back Danny Wilson playing for Scotland as they were thumped 4-0 by Slovakia in another qualifier in Kirkcaldy. St. Michael’s first treble 1987 - Ex-red Michael Owen scored his first ever hat-trick, for Mold Alexandra against Caergwrle in the Clwyd Junior League. Red beginnings 1942 - The legendary Ian Callaghan was born in Toxteth. He signed professional terms in March 1960 and made a record 857 reds appearances, bagging 68 goals while helping us to five League titles, two FA Cups, one European Cup, two UEFA Cups, UEFA Super Cup and three FA Charity Shields, as well as winning the Football Writers’ Player of the Year award in 1973/74. 1992 – Senegalese forward Sadio Mané was born in Sédhiou. He signed from Southampton for an initial £30m in June 2016, netting 120 times in 269 outings before moving on to Bayern München for an initial €32m in June 2022. He had helped us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup and League Cup. 1930 - Keeper Tommy Younger was born in Edinburgh. He arrived from Hibernian in June 1956 for £9,000 and made 127 reds appearances, as well as winning 24 caps for Scotland. He returned north of the border after three years at Anfield to join Falkirk, and later became the President of the Scottish FA. He died in January 1984. 1926 – Defender Bert Shears played the first of his sixteen reds games with outside-right Archie Rawlings appearing for the 67th and last time as we won 1-0 at Bury thanks to a late Harry Chambers goal. 1915 – Left-half John Shield was born in South Shields. He moved from Bishop Auckland in ecember 1935, but only played one senior game before returning to his former club in October 1936. 1908 – Forward Charlie Hewitt was born in Greatham. He signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £75 in May 1907, bagging six goals in sixteen outings before joining West Bromwich Albion for the same fee the following April. Digger honoured 1988 - John Barnes was named the PFA Player of the Year, with Steve McMahon and Peter Beardsley rounding out the top three, and Alan Hansen also nominated in the shortlist of six contenders. Another Euro semi 2018 – We won 2-1 at Manchester City in the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Quarter-final, to progress 5-1 on aggregate. Gabriel Jesus gave the home side a very early lead on the night, one of his six goals past us to date, before Leroy Sané had a goal incorrectly rules out for offside, a decision that led to City boss Pep Guardiola being sent to the stands for his protests. Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino both scored after the break to take us through to a Semi-final against Roma. 2022 – We drew a League 2-2 at the Etihad Stadium, with Kevin de Bruyne giving the home side an early lead thanks to a deflection, one of his four strikes against us, before Diogo Jota equalised. Gabriel Jesus restored City’s lead just before the break, but birthday boy Sadio Mané levelled the scores again straight after half time to leave City one point ahead in the title race with seven games remaining. Beating the Potters 2016 – We thumped Stoke City 4-1 at Anfield, with Albert Moreno and Daniel Sturridge netting either side of Bojan Krkić’s headed goal before the break. Divock Origi bagged a second-half brace. 1971 - Peter Thompson struck the only goal of our top-flight trip to City’s old Victoria Ground stadium, his 54th and last goal for the club. Another keeper walks 2012 – Maxi Rodríguez scored his last two reds goals as we raced into a two-goal lead at Blackburn Rovers. However, following Pepe Reina’s dismissal in the previous game, his stand-in Alexander Doni was then sent off, with Brad Jones coming on to save a Yakubu penalty with his first touch, although he then drew the home side level with a brace that included another spot kick. Andy Carroll headed in a stoppage-time winner. Tonking City 1982 - Sammy Lee, Craig Johnston, Alan Kennedy and Ian Rush all netted as we thumped Manchester City 5-0 at Maine Road, with Phil Neal scoring from the spot. Mo again 2021 – Mohamed Salah scored in his third consecutive reds game as we came from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Anfield behind closed doors. Ollie Watkins gave the visitors the lead with one of his five goals past us to date, with Trent Alexander-Arnold bagging an injury time winner. 1976 – We shared a goalless draw at Aston Villa, with The Guardian stating that the reds “once more… employed their scorched earth policy for away matches”. Red endings 1897 – Preston North End held us to a goalless home draw as we ended the season in fifth place, with inside-forward Willie Michael playing his 23rd and last reds game and centre-half Robert Neill appearing for the 27th and final time. 1929 – We beat Huddersfield Town 3-1 at Leeds Road.
