Wembley glory at last 1965 – This day finally brought the FA Cup to Anfield for the first time in our history. The game against Leeds United was goalless after ninety minutes, with full-back Gerry Byrne playing most of the match with a broken collar-bone. Roger Hunt opened the scoring in extra time, before Billy Bremner equalised for the Yorkshire side with one of his five goals past us. With five minutes remaining, “up popped the head of Ian St. John” to win the cup. Winger Peter Thompson reached a century of reds outings in this game. 1971 – Peter Thompson played his 400th game for the club as we beat Southampton 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to an Emlyn Hughes goal as we finished the League season in fourth, ahead of the FA Cup Final. 1980 - We played in the only FA Cup Semi-final to go to a third replay, which we unfortunately lost to Arsenal courtesy of a Brian Talbot goal at Highfield Road, one of his six strikes against the reds, who went on to l1999ose the Final to Second Division West Ham United. 1996 - We also faced the Gunners, holding them to a goalless Premiership draw at Highbury. This was the first time since three substitutes were permitted for League games four years previously that we did not name a keeper on the bench, with Mark Kennedy, Ian Rush and Michael Thomas getting the nod. Luis and Mo the best 2014 - Luis Suárez was named as the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for a season in which he struck 31 times in total in 37 reds outings as we came close to claiming the League title. 2018 - Mohamed Salah won the same award, towards the end of a season in which he notched 44 times in 52 games, helping us to reach the UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv. On our way to Athens 2007 - Jamie Carragher played his ninetieth European game in our Champions League Semi-final second leg with Chelsea at Anfield, breaking Ian Callaghan’s club record. Daniel Agger converted a cleverly-worked free-kick to take the tie into extra time, following our single goal defeat in the first meeting. Dirk Kuyt had an effort ruled out for offside, and also hit the woodwork before Pepe Reina was the hero in a penalty shoot-out that we won 4-1, saving from both Geremi and Arjen Robben. Kuyt struck our decisive fourth spot-kick. This was the first time we had faced the same team in European competition in three consecutive seasons, as well as being the third round in a row in which Bolo Zenden had come up against a former employer, following ties with Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven. Striking legends in and out 1990 - Kenny Dalglish made his 515th and final appearance in our 1-0 home defeat of Derby County, thanks to a goal from Gary Gillespie, as we were awarded our eighteenth, and most recent, League title. He was aged 39 years 58 days, a post-war club record. This game had been postponed from February. 1972 - We also faced the Rams, losing a First Division fixture 1-0 at the Baseball Ground thanks to a goal from John McGovern. 1958 – Outside-right Fred Morris joined from Mansfield Town for a £7,000 fee. He bagged fourteen goals in 48 reds games, moving on to Crewe Alexandra for £4,000 in June 1960. 1914 – Defender Ernest Peake moved on to Third Lanark. He joined the reds as a Welsh international from his hometown club Aberystwyth Town in May 1908, netting six times in 55 games. 1899 – Forward Peter Kyle arrived from Clyde for £100, failing to score in five first-team games before moving on to Leicester Fosse in May 1900. On the same day, Scottish inside-right Andrew McCowie moved on to Woolwich Arsenal after netting eleven times in 35 games since signing from Cambuslang Hibernian in October 1896. Other arrivals 1973 - Jimmy Case signed from South Liverpool for £500. He went on to net 46 times in 269 reds games, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields. 1902 – Keeper Peter Platt arrived from Blackburn Rovers, playing 44 times before moving on to Luton Town in 1904. He sadly died aged just 39 in a mini-flu epidemic in Nuneaton in January 1922. 1897 – Right-winger Bobby Marshall signed from Leith Athletic. He scored twice in 21 reds games, moving on to Portsmouth in 1899. Crashing out? 2019 – We lost 3-0 at Barcelona in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Semi-final to leave our chances of reaching the Final in Madrid hanging by a thread, despite a decent performance. Ex-red Luis Suárez opened the scoring before Lionel Messi added a late brace. Gary Mac yet again 2001 - Gary McAllister scored for the fifth straight game in our 2-0 win at Bradford City as we headed towards the Champions League. Michael Owen nabbed the other goal in a game that was originally postponed the previous December. Also recently 2017 – Emre Can struck a spectacular goal, the only one of our trip to Watford. 2016 - We lost 3-1 at Swansea City, with left-back Brad Smith seeing red. André Ayew struck twice for the home side, with Jack Cork also on target, as Christian Benteke scored for the reds. 2012 – Brazilian left-back Fábio Aurélio played his 134th and last reds game as Fulham won for the first time at Anfield, so completing their first ever League double over us. A presentation was made to Brian Hall before the game, marking his retirement as Public Relations Manager, a post he had held since 1991. Martin Škrtel put through his own net as ex-reds reserve Alex Kačaniklić attempted to convert John Arne Riise’s cross for the only goal. 2011 - We beat Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield. Maxi Rodríguez opened the scoring before Dirk Kuyt converted a penalty and Luis Suárez struck, with ex-Toon star Andy Carroll making a late cameo from the bench. Replay 86 2006 - The Replay 86 game was played at Anfield in front of 32,947 in aid of the Marina Dalglish Appeal. The two sides were representing the 1986 FA Cup Final teams, and the only goal came in the final minute, through former reds reserves striker John Durnin. Also against the Blues 1937 - Jack Balmer was on target as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea at Anfield in the final game of a League campaign that saw us finish in a disappointing eighteenth, just three points clear of relegation. Dickie Spence netted one of his six goals against the reds. On the same day, Bill Shankly was on the losing side at Wembley, as Preston North End lost 3-1 to Sunderland in the first FA Cup Final to be played in the month of May. Goals galore 1978 - King Kenny grabbed a hat-trick in our 4-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield, with Phil Neal adding a penalty. 1926 - Forward Tommy Reid scored both goals on his reds debut in our 2-2 home draw with Sheffield United, with outside-right Cyril Oxley playing his 34th and final reds game as we finished the season in sixth place. Harry Johnson scored two of his seven goals past us. 1999 - Less happily, Jamie Carragher scored an own goal as we came from 2-0 behind at half time to beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at Anfield in the League, having already scored an own goal in the reverse fixture that season! Paul Ince struck with Steve McManaman netting his 66th and final reds goal after Jamie Redknapp’s spot-kick. Spurs’ Mauricio Taricco was sent off just before the break while Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Bjørn Tore Kvarme both played their final reds games, with the young Steven Gerrard instrumental in our comeback after coming off the bench at half time. Steffen Iversen had netted the other goal for the visitors. 1943 - Cyril Done struck for the fourth consecutive game, grabbing a brace as we beat Bolton Wanderers 4-0 in our Lancashire Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield, with Thomas Pearson and Jackie Campbell also on target. This game also counted towards the Wartime League. 1979 - We also faced the Trotters in a game originally postponed from three months earlier, when Ray Kennedy netted twice and David Johnson and Kenny Dalglish were also on the scoresheet in a 4-1 win in wintry conditions at Burnden Park, with the home side’s score coming from a Graeme Souness own goal. Bolton keeper Jim McDonagh said afterwards, “Liverpool are perfection. This team would have been good enough to win the 1978 World Cup!” Eleven in a row 1982 - We won 2-0 at home to Nottingham Forest, our eleventh successive League win - a joint club record with 2013/14, and tenth straight win in all competitions, a then club record. Craig Johnston bagged both goals. Bob off the mark 1948 – Left-half Bob Paisley struck the first of his twelve reds goals as ended the season in tenth by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield, with Jack Balmer also on target. Another trophy 1946 - We beat Everton 3-1 at Anfield to claim the Liverpool Senior Cup. Bill Jones and Harry Eastham netted for the reds, with the Blues’ Purvis putting through his own net. Jameo off 1993 - David James was dismissed at Norwich City on the hour mark with David Phillips netting the only goal of the game past Mike Hooper from the subsequent spot-kick, as he became the first substitute keeper to take the field for the reds in the Premier League, in his 73rd and final senior reds appearance. This was a vital result as we finished in sixth, three places and three points behind City who reached the UEFA Cup, which we failed to do. English reds 1964 - Roger Hunt scored in England’s 3-0 victory over ‘Young England’. 1996 - Michael Owen netted a brace for the Under-16’s as they beat Turkey 2-1 in a European Championships group game in Austria. 2002 – David Mannix and David Raven both played for England Under-17’s in their goalless draw with host nation Denmark in a European Championships Finals group game. 2012 – Ex-reds boss Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of the senior England side. 2016 – Curtis Jones struck as England Under-15’s lost 7-5 to Croatia, with clubmates Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Bobby Duncan also featuring. 2022 – Carter Pinnington featured for England Under-15’s as they lost a friendly 3-1 to Romania. An English treble 1935 - Sam English scored a hat-trick as we beat Exeter City 3-1 in a testimonial match for former reds full-back Jimmy Gray at St. James Park. Scottish-born South African international Gray had only ever played one senior reds game, but turned out 221 times for the Grecians, helping them to finish runners up in the Third Division South in 1933. First and last caps 1985 - Michael Robinson won his first cap as a Queens Park Rangers player, and nineteenth in all, as Norway held the Republic of Ireland to a goalless draw in a World Cup qualifier in Dublin. His former clubmates Jim Beglin, Mark Lawrenson and Ronnie Whelan all also featured. Ex-red Avi Cohen and future reds John Barnes and Mark Wright all also won international caps that day. 1991 - Poland’s European Championships qualifying visit to Lansdowne Road also ended goalless. This was the twentieth meeting between the countries, with John Aldridge winning his final cap as a Real Sociedad player, and 39th in total. Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton and ex-reds reserve Kevin Sheedy also played. John Barnes, Steve Nicol, ex-red Jim Magilton and future reds Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Istvan Kozma, Øyvind Leonhardsen, Gary McAllister, Colin Pascoe, Karl-Heinz Riedle and Dean Saunders all also represented their countries on the same day. Other games on this day 1957 – Tony Rowley and Billy Liddell netted as we beat Bristol City 2-1 in a Second Division encounter in L4, to finish the season in third place, just missing out on promotion again. 1920 – Harry Chambers nabbed the only goal of our visit to Sunderland as our season ended with a fifth-place finish, just behind the hosts. Also in and out 2024 – Centre-half Carter Pinnington signed pro terms with the reds. On the same day, it was announced that goalkeeping coach John Achterberg would be leaving the club at the end of the season, having been with the club since June 2009. St. Michael the Dad 2003 - Michael Owen became a father when his future bride Louise Bonsall gave birth to their daughter, Gemma Rose. Other internationals 1975 – John Toshack played for Wales as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-1 in Luxembourg. 1993 – Roy Hodgson took charge of Switzerland as they beat Italy 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Bern. 1994 – Future red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon as they drew a friendly 2-2 in South Korea. -
Semi-final joy and despair 2001 - We played in our 21st FA Cup Semi-final, beating Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 at Villa Park, with Emile Heskey and Robbie Fowler scoring after the underdogs had kept us out for nearly eighty minutes. Keith Ryan bagged a late consolation for Wanderers. 1981 - We were held to a goalless draw at home by Bayern München in the European Cup with Kurt Niedermayer rattling the crossbar, but we went through on away goals after the return in Germany. This game marked Steve Heighway’s 475th and final reds game, as he came on at half time to replace Terry McDermott, while Graeme Souness missed the match through injury. 1990 - We lost 4-3 to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup, also at Villa Park. This is the furthest we have ever gone in the competition as holders. We went in ahead at half time, thanks to an Ian Rush strike, and in total control, although our goalscorer had gone off injured after half an hour. However, the Eagles came out fighting in the second half. The game ended 3-3 after ninety minutes, with Steve McMahon also on target, and John Barnes scoring from spot. Future Eagles boss Alan Pardew grabbed the dramatic winner in extra time, with Mark Bright, Gary O’Reilly and Andy Gray all also on target for Palace. Tom born 1859 – Tom Watson was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He was appointed as reds boss in July 1896, doubling his salary to £300 a year from his time at Sunderland, whom he had led to three League titles and three FA Cup Semi-finals in four seasons. He went beyond the remit of Club Secretary at Anfield, involving himself in team selection, tactics and player recruitment, so becoming a Manager in all but name. He led the reds to two League titles and the Second Division championship and our first ever FA Cup Final, remaining in charge until his death in May 1915. Through to another semi 2008 - We beat Arsenal 4-2 in the second leg of our Champions League Quarter-final. Abou Diaby put the visitors ahead before Sami Hyypiä and Fernando Torres gave us the lead. Emmanuel Adebayor looked to have sent the Gunners through on the away goals rule after a storming run from Theo Walcott, with one of his five goals past us to date, but moments later Ryan Babel was brought down in the box and Steven Gerrard converted the spot-kick to score in his fourth consecutive home game in Europe, a new club record. Babel then added a fourth in stoppage time. In Bob’s honour 1999 - The Paisley Gateway was officially opened at Anfield by his widow Jessie, three years after Bob’s death, to commemorate his service to the club. As Manager, he won an incredible nineteen trophies in nine seasons. He had also played 277 times in our first team, netting twelve times. Quadruple trebles We have three times bagged hat-tricks on this day over the years. 1933 - Gordon Hodgson grabbed three in a 4-3 defeat of Blackpool, with Dave Wright also on target. Phil Watson bagged a brace for the visitors. 1905 - Jack Parkinson netted a treble in our 8-1 thrashing of Burslem Port Vale at Anfield, with Robert Robinson and Jack Cox adding braces and Sam Raybould also scoring. Defender George Latham made the first of his nineteen reds appearances in this game. 1955 - Ex-red Cyril Done bagged four in our 4-3 defeat at Port Vale, as they were by then known. Eric Anderson, Johnny Evans and Billy Liddell netted our goals. 1899 - Inside-right Johnny Walker struck three times as we beat Derby County 4-0 at Anfield, with Alex Raisbeck also on target. Outside-right Andrew McCowie played his 35th and last reds game. We have also beaten the Rams twice more in First Division matches at Anfield on this day. 1980 – David Johnson netted while playing his hundredth League game for the reds as we won 3-0, with Colin Irwin scoring and Keith Osgood putting through his own net. 1939 - Phil Taylor bagged a brace in a 2-1 victory, with Dave McCulloch netting the last of his seven goals against us. Heading to another European semi 2010 - We faced SL Benfica for the tenth time in European competition, a joint club record along with Chelsea. We overcame a first leg deficit in our UEFA Europa League Quarter-final by winning 4-1 at Anfield. Dirk Kuyt headed us in front from a corner before Lucas Leiva bagged the second. Fernando Torres then struck a brace either side of Óscar Cardozo’s consolation, so becoming the first red ever to net twice in four consecutive home games. For Gerry 1970 - A testimonial match was staged for Gerry Byrne with the reds drawing 8-8 with an All Star XI at Anfield. Bobby Graham, Chris Lawler and Ian St. John each netted a brace, with Roger Hunt and Willie Stevenson also on target. Steve Heighway played his first reds game and was so unfamiliar with his surroundings that he asked a member of the opposition which end was the Kop! Sammy starts off with a bang 1978 - Sammy Lee scored on his reds debut as a substitute for David Johnson, who tore his knee ligaments, in our 3-2 home League win over Leicester City. Tommy Smith nabbed both our other goals, his final reds strikes. Brian’s ton up 1974 – Brian Hall played his hundredth League game as we lost 1-0 at Sheffield United, with Terry Nicholl on target and Ray Clemence saving a penalty from Keith Eddy. Beaten by the Blues 2009 – We lost 3-1 at home to Chelsea in the first leg of our Champions League Quarter-final after Fernando Torres had handed us the lead, to suffer our only defeat of the season at Anfield. Branislav Ivanović twice headed in when unmarked at set pieces, with Didier Drogba rounding off the scoring late on with one of his eleven goals past us to equal our worst ever home defeat in European competition. Pepe Reina played his fiftieth European Cup game. Three off the mark 1912 – American outside-left Hugh Lester and James Scott both debuted as we won 2-0 at Bradford City in a top-flight fixture, with the former becoming the first player born outside of the British Isles to play for the reds. Forward James Speakman grabbed his only reds goal with Sam Gilligan also on the scoresheet as Dickie Bond missed a penalty for the home side. Red beginnings and ends 1944 - Outside-left Hugh McQueen died in Norwich. He had made 61 reds appearances after signing from Leith Athletic in October 1892, bagging eighteen goals and helping us to the Lancashire League and Second Division titles in successive seasons before joining Derby County in July 1895. 1889 - Inside-forward Arthur Metcalf was born in Seaham, County Durham. He signed from Newcastle United for £150 in May 1912 and netted 28 times in 63 reds games, playing in every position on the park. Most recently 2015 - Philippe Coutinho bagged the only goal of our FA Cup Sixth Round replay at Blackburn Rovers. Sadly, we crashed out to Aston Villa in the subsequent Semi-final at Wembley. 2017 – We won 2-1 at Stoke City’s rechristened bet365 Stadium, despite falling behind to the last of Jon Walters’ seven goals past us on the stroke of half time. The Brazilian pair Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino both came off the bench to score within two minutes of each other to hand us victory. Souey in charge 1986 - Graeme Souness joined Rangers as Player/Manager from Sampdoria for £300,000, scoring three times in 73 outings and leading them to three League titles and four League Cups. Mixed fortunes against Oldham We have faced Oldham Athletic three times on this day in history. 1911 - Sam Gilligan netted the only goal of our top-flight meeting at Anfield, with centre-half Jimmy Harrop playing his hundredth League game for the reds. 1916 - Dave Watson struck our consolation as we lost a Wartime League match 2-1 at Boundary Park. 1922 - We were thumped 4-0 away from home in another First Division meeting, on the way to our third League title, with left-half Tom Bromilow away on international duty. Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers played his hundredth League game for the reds as Jack Marshall bagged a treble for the home side, the last of his five goals past us, with Reuben Butler also scoring in what was our thousandth official game. Beating the Owls 1989 - We thumped Sheffield Wednesday 5-1 in a top-flight encounter at Anfield that kicked off at 11:30am due to it being Grand National day. Peter Beardsley was on target twice, with Steve McMahon, Ray Houghton and John Barnes also netting. This remains our joint record victory over the Hillsborough outfit. 1896 - We also beat the Owls, with Clarke netting the only goal of our friendly against The Wednesday at Anfield. Disappointment at St. James’ Park We have twice visited Newcastle United on this day in history. 1950 - Willie Fagan grabbed our consolation as we were thumped 5-1 in a top-flight match. Robert Mitchell bagged two of his eight goals against the reds, with Ernest Taylor netting the first of his five past us, with Tommy Walker and George Hannah also on target. 1893 - Our friendly ended goalless. Derby stalemate 1963 - Our top-flight trip to Goodison Park ended without score, with right-half Gordon Milne reaching a century of reds games. International beginnings 1992 - Myllykosken Pallo-47’s Sami Hyypiä won his first Under-21’s cap for Finland as they drew 1-1 in a friendly in Poland. 2007 – Future reds reserves forward Nikola Sarić won his only official cap for Denmark Under-16’s, netting in their 3-2 defeat by Georgia in Portugal. 2009 – Conor Coady played for England Under-16’s for the first time as they beat Russia 3-1 in the Montaigu Tournament. International endings 1970 - Emlyn Hughes won his eighth and final England Under-23’s cap as they thumped Bulgaria 4-1 in Plymouth. 1905 – John ‘Geezer’ Hughes made his third and final senior international appearance for Wales as they drew 2-2 with Ireland in the British International Championships in Belfast. 1900 - England’s Raby Howell and Scotland’s Hugh Morgan both won their second and final caps, and only ones as reds players, as the Scots won 2-1 at Villa Park in the same tournament. Future reds keeper Ned Doig was in the Scotland goal. 1999 - Future red Gary McAllister announced his international retirement after a total of 57 caps. Other reds games 1996 – Stan Collymore and John Barnes netted as we beat West Ham United 2-0 on Easter Monday at Anfield. 1992 – Wimbledon won 3-2 in L4 as Ronnie Moran took charge of the side with Graeme Souness recuperating from a heart operation. Michael Thomas struck before Lawrie Sanchez equalised, but Ronnie Rosenthal put us in front at the break. Andy Clarke levelled the scores again before John Fashanu scored one of his five goals against the reds from the spot. 1972 – We defeated Coventry City 3-1 at home with Kevin Keegan and John Toshack on the scoresheet either side of a Tommy Smith penalty. 1961 – We beat Charlton Athletic 2-1 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield as Roger Hunt bagged a brace. 1959 – We lost 2-1 to Middlesbrough in a Second Division fixture in L4. Jimmy Melia struck our consolation after Eddie Holiday and then Brian Clough had scored for the home side, the latter with one of his ten goals past us. 1901 – Sam Raybould bagged the only goal of Notts County’s visit. Razor sheathed 2001 - Neil Ruddock was released by Crystal Palace after 28 games for them. He joined Roy Evans at Swindon Town four months later. Also in international action 1922 – Tom Bromilow played for England as they beat Scotland 1-0 in the British International Championships at Villa Park, with ex-red Ken Campbell in the visitors’ goal. 1964 – Peter Thompson played for England Under-23’s in their 2-2 draw in France. 1987 – Ex-red Avi Cohen featured as Israel lost 3-2 to Romania in a friendly in Brasov. 1992 – Future red Torben Piechnik played for Denmark in their 2-1 friendly defeat in Turkey. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak captained Turkey Under 16’s to a 2-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland in Dublin. 2023 – Future red Trey Nyoni played for England Under-16’s as they beat Romania on penalties after their friendly in France ended goalless. -
4-3 for the first time 1996 - We played out a real humdinger with Newcastle United at Anfield. Robbie Fowler put us ahead after two minutes, but we went in 2-1 down at half-time after one of Les Ferdinand’s six strikes past us and a David Ginola goal. Robbie Fowler levelled the scores with his 22nd strike in his last 21 outings, but Faustino Asprilla put the visitors ahead again two minutes later. Stan Collymore tied the match once more, and then grabbed a dramatic last-gasp winner right at the death, in a match later voted the best in the Premiership’s first decade. A new record capture 1981 - Craig Johnston signed from Middlesbrough for a club record £650,000 fee. He grabbed forty goals, including one in the 1986 FA Cup Final, in 271 reds games, also helping us to claim the European Cup, five League titles and two League Cups in his time at Anfield. Debuts leading to contrasting careers 1981 - Ronnie Whelan got his reds career off to a flying start by scoring on his debut, a 3-0 home League win over Stoke City, with Terry McDermott adding a brace. Whelan went on to play 493 reds games in all. 1965 – We also beat the Potters at Anfield when Gordon Milne, Ian St. John and Roger Hunt were on target in a 3-2 victory. Roy Vernon struck the last of his six goals against the reds, with Harry Burrows also on target. 1897 - Keeper Charlie Jowett played his only senior reds game as we drew 2-2 at Anfield with The Wednesday. Inside-forward Andrew McCowie made the first of his 35 appearances for the club in this top-flight game. Willie Michael nabbed his fifth and last reds foal with Frank Becton converting a penalty while Laurie Bell bagged the first of his four strikes against the reds, with Arthur Brady also on the scoresheet for the visitors. 1899 - Custodian Bill Perkins debuted in a 3-2 defeat of Newcastle United at Anfield. Jack Cox, Johnny Walker and George Allan scored our goals, while half-back Tom Cleghorn played his seventieth and final reds game. Perkins went on to play 117 reds games, including every game in our first League championship winning season in 1900/01. On our way to Wembley 1974 - We clinched our place in the FA Cup Final by beating Leicester City 3-1 in a replay at Villa Park. Brian Hall struck straight after half time before Len Glover equalised, but goals from Kevin Keegan and John Toshack took us to Wembley. On the way to Athens 2007 - Jamie Carragher played his 58th game in the European Cup, breaking Phil Neal’s club record, as we won 3-0 at PSV Eindhoven in the first leg of our Champions League Quarter-final. Dirk Kuyt seemingly got himself booked at the end of the game by obstructing a free-kick to guarantee he would be banned for second leg at Anfield and ensure a clean slate for the Semi-final. Unfortunately, Fábio Aurélio ruptured his Achilles, which kept him out of the first team until September. Derby victories 1999 – This day brought an end to five years without a derby victory as we beat Everton 3-2 at Anfield, despite Olivier Dacourt opening the scoring in the first minute. The game is still remembered for Robbie Fowler’s goal-line sniffing celebration after he struck a penalty in front of the away fans, one of two goals he scored that day, to add to a Patrik Berger strike. Young right-back Steven Gerrard helped to preserve all three points with a couple of scrambled goal-line clearances late on. Francis Jeffers became the youngest post-war Merseyside derby goalscorer in this game, aged just eighteen years and 68 days. 1976 - Phil Neal missed a penalty at Anfield, but this did not prove costly as David Fairclough netted the only goal of a game that was played at eleven o’clock, due to the Grand National taking place at Aintree that afternoon. This was the only occasion in that title-winning season that we won four League games on the bounce. A sweet win for Thommo at Old Trafford 1972 - Goals from Chris Lawler, John Toshack and Emlyn Hughes handed us a 3-0 win at Manchester United, with Phil Thompson making his reds debut. Unfortunately, we did not win there again for another six years. 1931 – We also played a First Division match at Old Trafford, with Gordon Hodgson on the scoresheet as we drew 1-1. Red hundreds 2002 - Sami Hyypiä grabbed the only goal of our Champions League Quarter-final first leg at home to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, to give us a slender advantage to take to Germany. This was our 200th game in Europe. 1934 – Gordon Hodgson and Berry Nieuwenhuys struck as we won 2-0 at Huddersfield Town as right-back Willie Steel reached a century of League outings for us. Hat-trick hero 1920 – Inside-left Dick Forshaw netted all three goals in our home First Division win over Derby County, with forward Billy Matthews debuting for the reds, at centre-half. 1937 - Harry Eastham was on target as we were beaten 4-1 at the Baseball Ground as right-half Ted Savage reached a century of reds appearances. Jack Nicholas and Ronnie Dix each netted one of their four goals against the reds, with Dai Astley bagging one of his six past us and Charlie Napier also on target. Bimpson off the mark 1953 - Louis Bimpson bagged the first of his 39 reds goals as we beat Cardiff City 2-1 in a top-flight encounter at Anfield, with Bill Jones also on target. Most recently 2021 – We won 3-0 at Arsenal behind closed doors, thanks to a brace from Diogo Jota and a Mohamed Salah strike. Double award winners 2009 - Rafael Benítez and Steven Gerrard were named the Barclays Manager and Player of the Month, respectively. On the same day, Gerrard agreed a new contract until 2013, with Dirk Kuyt signing on until 2012. Happy birthdays 1958 – Former reserve team kit man John Wright was born in Liverpool. He was with the club for nearly a decade, initially as a masseur at the Academy, and is the father of former reds right-back Stephen Wright. 1901 - Left-winger Billy Chalmers was born in Aberdeen. He only made two senior appearances after signing from Old Aberdeen FC in 1923, moving on to Tranmere Rovers in June 1925. 1926 - Outside-left Ken Brierley was born in Ashton-under-Lyme. He went on to net eight times in 61 first-team appearances after signing from Oldham Athletic for £7,000 in February 1948, returning there in March 1953. Red farewells 1915 - Defender Phil Bratley played his thirteenth and final reds game in our 6-2 thumping at Aston Villa, with Harry Hampton scoring his second hat-trick against the reds in this fixture, and a club record fourteenth for the Villains, the last of his fifteen goals against us, and debutant Harry Nash also bagging a treble. Jackie Sheldon converted a penalty with Tom Miller grabbing our other goal. Bratley returned to Rotherham County, one of his former clubs, later that year. 1926 – We drew 2-2 with Birmingham City in L4. John Bradford bagged two of his fifteen goals past us, including a penalty. Gordon Hodgson scored as we also benefited from a Bill Hunter own goal, with centre-half Walter Wadsworth playing his 242nd and last reds game. Jocky at the wrong end 1990 - Alan Hansen scored an own goal as we beat Wimbledon 2-1 with Ian Rush and Gary Gillespie scoring at the right end. He had also put through his own net at Plough Lane the season before! In charge 1954 - Andy Beattie managed Scotland for the first of seventeen times as they lost 4-2 to England at Hampden Park in a World Cup qualifier that also counted towards the British International Championships. Beattie had guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 2011 - Paul Ince left as Manager of Notts County by mutual consent, after losing a club record nine games in a row. Allan’s moment of glory 1897 - George Allan won his only Scottish cap as they lost 2-1 to England at Crystal Palace in the British International Championships. He was therefore the first player to be capped by the Scots while on our books. Future red Edgar Chadwick won his seventh and final cap for the home side. Beating the Wearsiders We have faced Sunderland three times on this day, without losing any of these top-flight meetings. 1948 - The first match ended goalless at Anfield. 1954 - Billy Liddell converted a penalty with Brian Jackson, John Evans and Eric Anderson also on target as we won in L4 by the odd goal in seven. The black-tie affair involved a main course of Chicken Zingara, with guests including Bill Shankly, Derby County boss Brian Clough, Jimmy Tarbuck, Kenny Lynch and Gerry Marsden. Final cap 2010 – Keeper Tyrell Bedford won his second and last cap for England Under-16’s as they beat Japan 2-1 in the Montaigu Tournament. Matty Regan and Raheem Sterling both also featured. Failed penalties This has not been a good day for our penalty takers. 1973 - Pat Jennings made a double save from Tommy Smith’s spot-kick as we were held 1-1 by Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, having already saved one from Kevin Keegan in the first half. Keegan netted our goal in the meantime. 1979 - Terry McDermott’s penalty hit a post and bounced away with the scores at 1-1 in our Maine Road FA Cup Semi-final with Manchester United. The game ended 2-2, with Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen on target, and we were knocked out in the replay at Goodison five days later. Wembley glory 1983 - We won our third consecutive League Cup, 2-1. Norman Whiteside opened the scoring for Manchester United with the first of his four goals past us before Alan Kennedy equalised at Wembley. The game went into extra time, with our fitness proving the greater as Frank Stapleton had to come back into defence with Gordon McQueen going up front, due to cramp. Ronnie Whelan, who had scored twice in the previous season’s Final, won the game for us with a beautifully curled shot past the helpless Gary Bailey. Bob Paisley was sent up to lift the trophy in his final season as boss. King Kenny’s centuries 1986 - Kenny Dalglish skippered Scotland while winning his hundredth cap in a 3-0 friendly defeat of Romania at Hampden Park. Alan Hansen and ex-red Graeme Souness both also played. On the same day, future red Mark Wright captained England as they beat the USSR 1-0 in a friendly in Tblisi. Fellow future red Peter Beardsley also played. Jan Mølby also turned out for his homeland that day, as Denmark held Northern Ireland to a 1-1 draw in another friendly, at Windsor Park. 1988 - Kenny secured another century when he led the reds to his hundredth victory as Manager, with John Aldridge and John Barnes striking in a 2-1 League defeat of Wimbledon at Anfield. This was Digger’s hundredth club goal, while Gary Gillespie reached a century of League appearances for the reds. Dalglish came on as a very late replacement for Aldridge, with Eric Young bagging the visitors’ consolation straight after that. Signing on 1898 – Inside-left Hugh Morgan signed from St. Mirren for £200. He struck seventeen times in 68 reds games, top scoring in his first full season at Anfield. He also won a second Scotland cap while on our books before joining Blackburn Rovers in June 1900. 1928 – Forward Billy Millar arrived from Linfield for £1,150. He scored twice in three games before moving on to Barrow in January 1930. He went on to set a scoring record at Barrow by netting thirty goals in as many Third Division North games, as well as making his debut for Northern Ireland. Reds on the way out 1998 - Mark Kennedy moved to Wimbledon for £1.75m, a £250,000 profit after three years with the reds since signing from Millwall. He had only made 21 senior reds appearances, without getting on the scoresheet. On the same day, Neil Ruddock joined First Division Queens Park Rangers on loan, for whom he played seven times. Meanwhile, ex-red Peter Beardsley joined Fulham on loan from Bolton Wanderers. He netted three times in ten games, and later returned for a second spell, before signing permanently for the Cottagers in November of that year. Red debutants 1984 - Kevin MacDonald made his reds bow as we beat Luton Town 1-0 at home, with John Wark on target. 2013 – Aussie left-back Brad Smith came off the bench to make his debut as we lost 2-1 at Chelsea with Martin Škrtel handing us an early lead. This was the first time we had lost consecutive League games under Brendan Rodgers, with Luis Suárez denied a strong late penalty claim. Eden Hazard scored one of his seven goals past us to date, with Samuel Eto’o also on target. Bobby again 2018 – Roberto Firmino scored his first career hat-trick as we thumped Arsenal 5-1 to secure our eighth consecutive win, and tenth in a row in the League. Dave Beasant attempted to prevent a corner, but his errant clearance was seized upon by John Barnes who sent it towards goal. Beasant attempted to get back to retrieve the situation but failed. Unfortunately, we ended up finishing fourth in a ‘two horse race’ that season. Baron born 1901 - Fred Baron was born in Prudhoe, Northumberland. He struck seven times in twenty games after signing from Mid-Rhondda United in February 1925, moving on to Southend United in March 1927. 1991 – Short-lived centre-half Steven Caulker was born in Feltham. He joined the reds on loan from Queens Park Rangers in January 2016, having his temporary spell at Southampton cut short to accommodate the move. He made just four reds appearances. Bert’s farewell 1971 - Bert Shelley died in Liverpool. He played 448 times for Southampton, a club record until the 1960’s. After retiring from playing, he joined George Kay’s coaching staff, following him to Anfield in August 1936. He stayed on as Trainer after Kay’s departure, working under Don Welsh and Phil Taylor until 1959 when he joined the general staff, with his duties including looking after the treatment room. He was still working for the club when he died. Zico out of a job 1996 - Phil Neal resigned as Manager of First Division Manchester City. He had lost seven of his ten games in charge. First and last 2023 – We beat Fulham by a single goal in a seven-goal thriller at Anfield, despite being 3-2 down with less than three minutes of normal time remaining. We took the lead when a Trent Alexander-Arnold free-kick bounced off the crossbar and keeper Bernd Leno for an own goal. Ex-red Harry Wilson levelled before Alexis Mac Allister struck his first goal for the club, a long-range special. However, Kenny Tete equalised in first-half stoppage time. Bobby De Cordova-Reid headed the Cottagers into the lead with ten minutes on the clock. There was still time for Wataru Endō and Trent Alexander-Arnold to both score from long range to complete the turnaround. Sadly, Joël Matip had to go off injured in what was to be his final outing for the club. Ex-reds loaned out 1999 - Gary Ablett joined Second Division Wycombe Wanderers on loan from Birmingham City. He made four appearances while at the Causeway Stadium. On the same day, ex-reserves forward John Durnin temporarily joined Third Division Carlisle United from Portsmouth. He scored once in seven first-team outings, and later signed permanently for the Cumbrians. Award winners 2008 - Sami Hyypiä was named Finland’s Player of the Year for the seventh time in ten years. 2018 - Mohamed Salah was named as the Football Supporters' Association Men's Player of the Year for the first time, winning it again in 2021 and 2023. This is reputedly the first reds game that current skipper Steven Gerrard attended. Rafa’s record 2008 - Steven Gerrard headed the only goal of the game as we entertained Olympique de Marseille in a Champions League group game. This was Rafael Benítez’s 66th European game in charge, overtaking Bob Paisley’s club record. Happy birthdays 1915 - Post-war keeper Cyril Sidlow was born in Colwyn Bay in North Wales. He played 165 reds games after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £4,000 in February 1946, helping us claim the League title in 1947. He also played in the 1950 FA Cup Final before joining Notts County in August 1952. 1947 - Ian Ross was born in Glasgow. He signed professional terms in August 1965 and netted four times in 69 appearances spread across six seasons at Anfield. He left for Aston Villa in February 1972 for £60,000, going on to captain them to the Third Division title, as well as the League Cup in 1975. 1949 - Centre-back Trevor Storton was born in Keighley. He had struck eight times in 118 League games for Tranmere Rovers before switching to Anfield for £25,000 in July 1972. He only played twelve times in two years before joining Chester, for whom he turned out more than 400 times. However, we still beat Arsenal 2-1 at Anfield, thanks to later goals by Steve McMahon and Barnes himself as Barry Venison reached a century of reds outings. Alan Smith struck a late consolation for the Gunners, one of his nine goals past us. 1983 - Kenny Dalglish scored his hundredth League goal for the reds as we drew 1-1 at Ipswich Town, with future red John Wark also on target. He therefore became only the second player to score a century of goals in the top flight in both England and Scotland, after Liverpool-born Joe Baker who reached this milestone for Hibernian, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest. 1921 – Danny Shone netted as we lost 3-1 at Middlesbrough, with centre-half Walter Wadsworth playing his hundredth game for the club. Double off the bench 1969 - Two reds substitutes scored in the same game for the first time. Alun Evans and Roger Hunt added to a Tommy Smith penalty, to give us a 3-2 win over Portuguese side Vitória de Setúbal in the Fairs Cup, with Geoff Strong putting through his own net. However, it was not enough to progress to the Third Round, as we went out on the new away goals rule, with the referee having to inform the players that the game was over with the players and supporters waiting around for extra time. This was Hunt’s 285th and last goal for the club while full-back Chris Lawler was playing for the reds for the 300th time. Forward Steve Peplow was making his third and last senior reds appearance. 2014 – We drew 2-2 with Ludogorets Razgrad in a Champions League group game in the Vasil Levski National Stadium, leaving us needing victory in our final home game against Basel to progress. David Fairclough, Steve Heighway, Kenny Dalglish and Terry McDermott were all among the goals, with McDermott scoring our 4,000th strike in the top flight. On the way to European glory 1975 - We won 2-1 at Polish side Slask Wroclaw, with goals from Ray Kennedy and John Toshack on an icebound pitch in our UEFA Cup Third Round first leg meeting. We went all the way in the competition that season, to claim it for the second time. 2015 – We beat Girondins de Bordeaux 2-1 at Anfield in a UEFA Europa League group game, on our way to the Final at the end of the season. The visitors scored from a free-kick after keeper Simon Mignolet was penalised for holding on to the ball too long, but James Milner equalised from the spot before Christian Benteke put us in front on the stroke of half time. Red trebles 1960 - Inside-forward Jimmy Harrower bagged a treble as we beat Sheffield United 4-2 in a Second Division game at Anfield. Ins and outs 1913 – Winger Jackie Sheldon arrived from Manchester United for £300, going on to grab twenty goals in 147 reds games, playing in our first ever FA Cup Final in 1914. He retired in 1922 after breaking his leg, with his name forever tainted by being the go-between in our match-fixing scandal with Manchester United in April 1915. 1936 – Forward John Shafto signed from Hexham. He struck seven times in twenty outings before war intervened. 1937 – Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop left the reds to join Cardiff City after playing 71 reds games without scoring, having won 26 England caps by the time he arrived from Sheffield Wednesday for £6,500 in March 1934. 1970 – Midfielder Doug Livermore moved on to Norwich City, having made just eighteen appearances. He returned to Anfield as Roy Evans’ Assistant in 1994. He left in November 1998 following Gérard Houllier taking full control. 2020 – Future reds midfielder Wataru Endō signed a new contract with VfB Stuttgart having initially joined on loan from Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging in August 2019, making the move permanent the following April. He scored fifteen times in 133 games for Die Roten in total before joining the reds for a reported €19m in August 2023. Stopping off on loan 2009 – Two reserves keepers both left the club on loan. Champions 2013 – Loanee winger Victor Moses was named Nigerian Footballer of the Year. 2004 - Future reds reserves striker Michael Nardiello came off the bench as England Under-16’s were held to a goalless draw at Bloomfield Road by Scotland. England won the Victory Shield that year, although the trophy had already been secured before this match. 2009 – Future red Raheem Sterling also featured in the Victory Shield as England won 2-1 in Scotland. Rush scored one, Rush scored two 1983 - Ian Rush scored five goals, becoming the third of five reds to do so in one game, as we thumped fourth-placed Luton Town 6-0 at home in the League, with his hat-trick completed by the 36th minute and his last being his fiftieth in the League for us. This was particularly impressive considering that he had to take painkillers before the game for a niggling groin injury and had only been passed fit two hours before the game. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, his 99th in the League for the reds. Amazingly, Tony Woodcock grabbed five goals for Arsenal on the same day, in their 6-2 victory at Aston Villa. He’s red, he’s white 2000 - Nick Barmby scored against Everton at the Anny Road end, before Kevin Campbell equalised with one of his four goals against the reds. We steamrollered our way to a 3-1 win in the second half, thanks to an Emile Heskey strike and a Patrik Berger penalty, after Vladimír Šmicer was felled by Thomas Gravesen, who was sent off. 1996 - Barmby arrived at Goodison from Middlesbrough for £5.75m. He went on to score 24 times in 133 games for the Toffees before moving across Stanley Park. Milestone goals 2005 - Bolo Zenden scored his first reds goal as we beat West Ham United 2-0 at Anfield, with Xabi Alonso having opened the scoring. League Cup trebles 1985 – The transfer-listed Paul Walsh scored a hat-trick as we beat Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 at home. Kenny Dalglish netted the other late on as Ronnie Whelan appeared for the 200th time. 1986 - Kenny was also on target when Steve McMahon scored his second League Cup hat-trick of the season in our 4-1 defeat of Leicester City at Anfield in another Third Round tie. Most recently 2016 – We won 4-2 at Crystal Palace, twice taking the lead through Emre Can and Dejan Lovren before being pegged back by a James McArthur brace. Happy birthday Willie 1939 - Left-half Willie Stevenson was born in Leith. He signed from Rangers for £20,000 in October 1962 and missed just nine League games in his first four seasons, making a total of 241 appearances and netting eighteen times. He helped us to two League titles and our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 before moving on to Stoke City in December 1967. A win at the Bridge 2008 - Xabi Alonso’s deflected strike was the only goal of our trip to Stamford Bridge, handing Chelsea their first home League defeat since February 2004, ending an 86-game unbeaten run. Alonso also hit the post with a second-half free-kick. Reds firsts 2023 – Diogo Jota opened the scoring of our UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield against Toulouse, but Thijs Dallinga soon levelled. Wataru Endō scored his first goal for the club with Darwin Núñez also on target before the break. Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah struck in the second half to complete a 5-1 win as midfielder James McConnell and left-back Calum Scanlon coming off the bench to make their senior bows. Into the Lions’ den 2004 - We won 3-0 at Millwall in a Third Round Carling Cup match as we headed towards a record tenth Final in the competition on our first visit to The New Den. Jerzy Dudek skippered the reds for the first time, while future Lion Zak Whitbread was making his reds bow. Salif Diao netted his third and final reds goal in the first half, with Milan Baroš adding a brace. Unfortunately, the game was marred by sick chants from the home fans that led to confrontations between the two sets of supporters. A rarity for Sami 2000 - Sami Hyypiä sat on the reds bench for the only time in his first five seasons at Anfield as a late Emile Heskey goal handed us victory over Czech side Slovan Liberec at Anfield in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Second Round tie. Robbie Fowler spurned a number of good chances, including a penalty. Sami did not reappear on the bench until March 2005. Robbie’s poor form could be partly explained by the fact that his future wife Kerrie had given birth to their second daughter, Jaya, earlier that day. Signing on 1896 – Scottish inside-right Andrew McCowie joined the reds from Cambuslang Hibernian. He struck eleven times in 35 games before joining Woolwich Arsenal in May 1899. On the move 2000 - Stan Collymore joined Bradford City from Leicester City on a free transfer. He struck twice in eight games, before joining Real Oviedo in Spain. 2003 - Academy Chief Scout Dave Moss was sacked as Manager of Macclesfield Town, his only time in the hot seat. He made 348 reds appearances, scoring 31 times, following his £4m arrival from AS Monaco in June 2001, but left for Roma for the same fee in June 2008. He helped us to win the European Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. 1979 – Brazilian left-back Fábio Aurélio was born in São Carlos. He arrived on a Bosman free transfer in July 2006, netting four goals in 134 games, helping us to claim the FA Community Shield in his very first senior appearance. He was released for the second time in June 2012. Jocky on the off 1977 - Alan Hansen made his reds debut as we beat Derby County 1-0 at Anfield, with Terry McDermott on the scoresheet. This was Bob Paisley’s hundredth win as reds boss, which came in his 182nd game as Manager. 1949 - We also beat the Rams in a First Division fixture at home when Kevin Baron, Willie Fagan and Jimmy Payne all struck as we won 3-1, with John Morris bagging one of his seven goals against the reds. 1921 - Harry Beadles debuted as we won 1-0 at Chelsea courtesy of forward Billy Matthews’ fourth and last reds strike. 1904 - Sam Raybould bagged a brace as we won 2-0 at Lincoln City, with defender Tom Chorlton making his reds bow and centre-half Alex Raisbeck playing his 200th game for the club. Another record for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen scored his 21st goal in European competition, a new club record, to hand us a 1-1 draw at Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana in the opening game of our UEFA Cup campaign. Anton Zlogar’s opening goal was the 250th we conceded under the sole charge of Gérard Houllier. Owen has since been comprehensively overtaken by Steven Gerrard. Most recently 2023 – We beat West Ham United 3-1 at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah converting a penalty but Jarrod Bowen nodded in before the break. Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota scored in the second half to secure victory. 2020 – Diogo Jota, Kostas Tsimikas and Rhys Williams all made their reds bows as we thumped Lincoln City 7-2 in a League Cup Third Round tie behind closed doors at the LNER Stadium. Ahmed El Mohamadi was sent off for handball with James Milner converting the resultant penalty. We went two goals ahead when Roger Johnson deflected in a Charlie Adam strike with Luis Suárez also on target, as Steven Fletcher pulled a goal back shortly after the break. 7,500 up 1994 – Ian Rush scored the 7,500th goal in the club’s history as we drew 1-1 at Newcastle United. Sent off again 2005 - We drew 2-2 at Birmingham City, with Neil Kilkenny being sent off for the home side on his debut, one of fifteen opposition players dismissed against the reds that season. Our goals came from Luis García and a Djibril Cissé penalty, with Stephen Warnock scoring an own goal and Walter Pandiani also on target. Off the mark 1892 – Forward John Miller netted on his reds bow as we thumped Bury 4-0 in a Lancashire League game at Anfield. Jonathan Cameron and Malcolm McVean also struck, while James Kelso played his only reds game. Kelso sadly committed suicide aged just 29, back in his native Scotland. 1958 – Outside-right Fred Morris scored his first reds goal as we drew 2-2 in a Second Division match at Brighton & Hove Albion, with Billy Liddell also on target. He signed professional terms in September 1968 and struck thirty times in 120 reds games, although he struggled to get picked in front of Kevin Keegan and John Toshack. He left the club to join Middlesbrough in December 1975 for £72,000. 1912 – Centre-forward Fred Howe was born in Bredbury in Cheshire. He joined on a free transfer from Hyde United in March 1935, netting 36 times in 94 outings before joining Manchester City in June 1938. He bagged three reds trebles, including notching four times in our record 6-0 derby victory at Anfield in September 1935. 1889 - Irish forward Billy Lacey was born in Enniscorthy, Wexford. He signed from Everton alongside centre-forward Tommy Gracie in a swap deal for £300 and winger Harold Uren in February 1912, going on to play 259 times for the reds, including the FA Cup Final in 1914. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting 29 times before crossing the Mersey to join New Brighton in June 1924. 1875 - Centre-half Robert Neill was born in Govan, Glasgow. At five feet four inches he is probably our shortest ever central defender, scoring three times in 27 games after signing on loan from Hibernian in April 1895 and then permanently in May 1896. He left to join Rangers in April 1897. Debuting at Manchester City 1910 - Forward Sam Gilligan scored on his reds debut as we beat City 2-1 at their Hyde Road ground, with Jack Parkinson also on target. 1969 - Phil Boersma made his reds bow on his twentieth birthday in our 3-2 defeat at Maine Road, becoming our first ever League Cup substitute, coming on for goalscorer Alun Evans in this Third Round tie, who bagged an equaliser when George Heslop’s panicked clearance struck him on the chest and went in. Bobby Graham netted our other goal, while Neil Young scored the last of his four goals past us. Ian Bowyer and Mike Doyle also struck for the home side. Supersub back at Anfield 1985 - David Fairclough played for the visitors as Oldham Athletic lost a League Cup Second Round first leg tie 3-0 at Anfield, our hundredth match in the competition. Steve McMahon bagged a brace, with Ian Rush also on target. A rare defeat 1974 - Burnley won 1-0 at Anfield, inflicting one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered in the whole of the 1970’s. Full-back Ian Brennan stunned Ray Clemence from thirty yards with his first ever goal for the club. Signing on 1938 – Utility player Bill Jones signed from Hayfield St Matthews. He scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. He later scouted for the reds while his grandson Rob represented the club in defence on 243 occasions in the 1990’s. 2021 – Newcastle-born midfielder James McConnell signed pro terms with the reds. He had arrived as an Under-16 from Sunderland. He made nine senior appearances in 2023/24. Hooper steps in 1988 - Reserves keeper Mike Hooper replaced Bruce Grobbelaar, who had gone down with meningitis, as we won 3-1 at Southampton thanks to goals from John Aldridge, Peter Beardsley and Jan Mølby. A win in the fizzy cup 1995 - Steve McManaman was the star of the show as we won our sixth League Cup, when it was known as the Coca Cola Cup, by defeating First Division Bolton Wanderers 2-1 at Wembley. Macca got both our goals, with Alan Thompson grabbing a late consolation for the Trotters. Future red Jason McAteer was on the losing side that day, while John Barnes was playing his 300th reds game. 2005 - We defeated Bolton again, with Igor Bišcan heading the only goal of the game at Anfield late on from a Djimi Traoré cross, his third and final reds goal. 1926 - We also beat Wanderers, with Harry Chambers grabbing the only goal of our First Division meeting late on at Burnden Park. Match-fixing shame 1915 - We visited Old Trafford on this Good Friday for a First Division match with Manchester United, who were struggling against relegation, while we were comfortable in mid-table. The game ended in a 2-0 United win with George Anderson bagging a brace, the last of his four goals against us. Happy birthday Gary Mac 1964 - Gary McAllister was born in Motherwell. He arrived on a free transfer in July 2000, proving inspirational in the run-in to the treble that season. He netted nine goals in 87 reds games before moving back to Coventry City as Player/Manager in May 2002. He returned to Anfield as a First Team Coach last summer, moving into an ambassadorial role after Brendan Rodgers was sacked. 1896 – Winger Chris Harrington was born in Edge Hill. He signed from South Liverpool in December 1920, failing to score in four senior outings, before returning to his former club the following year. A sad day 1984 - Jack Balmer died in Liverpool. He had bagged 111 goals in 309 reds games after signing from Everton in May 1935, including trebles in three consecutive matches on our way to the League title in 1947. He also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1899 - Thomas ‘Harry’ Bradshaw died of tuberculosis in Tottenham. He joined from Northwich Victoria in October 1893 and netted 51 times in 138 games for the reds, helping us to our first two Second Division titles and was the first reds player to win senior international honours. He left Anfield to join Tottenham Hotspur in May 1898. 2004 - Left-back Eddie Spicer died. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving in the Royal Marines in World War Two, going on to net twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title and featuring in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. 2013 - Forward Wayne Harrison died aged just 46 after suffering from pancreatic cancer. He signed from Oldham Athletic for £250,000 in January 1985 at the age of seventeen, then a record fee for a teenager, although he never made a senior reds appearance before having to retire due to injury in the summer of 1991, aged just 23. King Billy’s four 1954 - Billy Liddell scored four goals as we thumped Ipswich Town 6-2 at Anfield in our first season after relegation. Also on the scoresheet were Louis Bimpson and John Evans. Joe Hewitt and Arthur Goddard both netted after the break. 1902 - Our biggest win was a 5-1 thumping at Anfield when Charlie Wilson struck a brace, his final goals for the club. Jack Cox and Edgar Chadwick were also on the scoresheet, with Sam Raybould adding a penalty. Peter Platt saved a spot-kick from Laurie Bell. 1897 – Forward Abe Hartley debuted as we won an away meeting 2-0, thanks to goals from Dan Cunliffe and Andrew McCowie. 1894 – We lost 1-0 at their old Pike’s Lane ground, with Jimmy Settle nabbing the first of his eleven goals past us. Arsenal again 1935 - Arsenal won for the fourth consecutive season in the League at Anfield, with Joe Hulme scoring one of his ten goals against the reds. No team has since equalled this feat. 1947 - They also left L4 with both points when Bob Priday netted in a 3-1 defeat. Ronnie Rooke struck twice for the Gunners, with Don Roper netting the first of his five past us. Eased in on his debut 1946 - John Easdale made his reds bow as we lost 2-1 at Stoke City, with Albert Stubbins netting late on for the reds after a Freddie Steele brace had put the Potters in control. 1941 - We also lost at the Victoria Ground, going down 4-3 in a Wartime League match, with our goals coming from Berry Nieuwenhuys, Stan Polk and Billy Liddell. 1906 – Forward John Lipsham debuted in our goalless draw at Manchester United, the first of just three outings for the club. 1948 – We held United to a goalless draw at Maine Road as Bob Paisley reached a century of reds appearances. Two-ton Jimmy 1931 - Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson played his 200th reds game in our 3-1 defeat of Sheffield Wednesday in a top-flight encounter at Anfield. Harry Burgess struck one of his nine goals past us, with Gordon Gunson bagging a brace and Harold Barton also on target. Tommy’s last 1913 – Centre-forward Tommy Gracie bagged his fifth and final reds goal as we beat Manchester City 4-2 at Anfield, with Jackie Sheldon netting a brace and Billy Lacey also on the scoresheet. Fred Howard struck two of his nine goals against the reds, both from the spot. Match abandoned 1893 - Our friendly with Accrington Stanley at their Crown Ground was abandoned after 75 minutes due to bad weather. We were losing 1-0 at the time. Clarets and Rams three times 1952 – We lost 2-0 at Burnley. 1926 – We were thumped 4-0 at Turf Moor with keeper Elisha Scott playing his 300th reds game. George Beel netted two of his eight goals against the reds, with Joe Devine also nabbing a brace. 1928 – We lost another trip 3-2 with Dick Edmed and Bob Clark on target. Louis Page scored one of his seven past us, with George Beel netting another brace. 1903 – We lost 2-0 at Derby County. 1900 – The Rams held us to a goalless draw in L4. 1899 – We were beaten 3-2 at the Baseball Ground, with Tommy Robertson scoring as well as seeing a penalty saved. John Hunter also struck for the reds, with Steve Bloomer netting one of his fourteen goals past us. Billy MacDonald and Fred Crump also scored for the Rams as keeper Harry Storer appeared for the reds for the 121st and final time. Other reds games 1956 – Alan A’Court bagged the only goal of Leyton Orient’s visit in a Second Division encounter. 1951 – Jimmy Payne netted as Blackpool held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Billy Liddell missed a penalty, with Stan Mortensen netting one of his eleven goals against the reds. 1950 – We lost 3-0 at Blackpool. Stan Mortensen struck twice, with Jackie Mudie also on target. 1933 – Portsmouth held us to a 2-2 draw in L4 with Sam English and Alf Hanson on the scoresheet. Jack Weddle bagged one of his five goals past us, with Jimmy Nichol also scoring. 1929 – We were thumped 4-0 at Sheffield United as Jimmy Dunne netted the first of his eleven strikes against us. Fred Tunstall scored one of his eight, with Tom Phillipson adding a brace. 1924 – We won 2-1 at Notts County. Dick Forshaw struck twice, with his first being when he converted the rebound from his own spot kick. 1922 – Donald McKinlay and Dick Johnson netted as we won 2-0 at Oldham Athletic. 1920 – Dick Johnson was on target in out 1-1 draw at Chelsea. 1919 – We beat Sunderland 3-2 at Anfield. Billy Lacey and Tom Miller netted, with Donald McKinlay missing a penalty as the reds also benefited from a Bert Hobson own goal. Jackie Mordue scored from the spot, the last of his six goals against us, with Charlie Buchan netting one of his 21. 1908 – Ronald Orr struck as we drew 1-1 at Aston Villa. 1907 – Joe Hewitt was on target as Chelsea returned home 4-1 victors. George Hilsdon scored the first two of his five goals past us, with George Henderson and Jimmy Windridge also on the scoresheet. 1896 – League leaders Aston Villa held us to a 3-3 draw in L4. Frank Becton scored twice, including a penalty, with George Allan also scoring. Stanley’s treble 1996 - Stan Collymore scored a treble as we thumped Third Division Rochdale 7-0 at Anfield in our Third Round meeting, our only senior encounter to date. Substitute Ian Rush scored his 39th and final FA Cup goal for the reds, breaking Denis Law’s record with his 42nd in total. Jason McAteer grabbed his first reds goal with Robbie Fowler also getting on the scoresheet, to add to a Peter Valentine own goal as we progressed to the Final that year. Truth day 2007 - We lost 3-1 at home to Arsenal in the Third Round of the FA Cup, with the Kop staging an emotional protest at the start of the game against Kelvin Mackenzie and in support of the 96 who lost their lives at Hillsborough in 1989. Dirk Kuyt grabbed our goal after Tomáš Rosický had bagged a brace, with Thierry Henry rounding out the scoring with the last of his nine goals past us. Double trouble 2013 – Daniel Sturridge scored on his reds bow as we won 2-1 at Blue Square Bet Premier side Mansfield Town in the FA Cup Third Round, with Luis Suárez netting the winner with the inadvertent use of an arm, so getting on the scoresheet in a third consecutive reds game. Matt Green nabbed a late consolation for the Stags. Double off the mark 2012 - Stewart Downing and Jonjo Shelvey both struck their first goals for the club as we thumped Oldham Athletic 5-1 in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Anfield on our way to Wembley. Robbie Simpson put the visitors ahead, but Craig Bellamy equalised before Steven Gerrard converted a penalty on the stroke of time. Birthday boy Andy Carroll was also on target. More hat-tricks 1968 - Roger Hunt scored a 22-minute second-half treble as we beat West Bromwich Albion 4-1 in a League game at Anfield after Geoff Strong had opened the scoring. Bobby Hope had hit the bar with a Baggies penalty, but the referee ordered a re-take because Tommy Lawrence had moved off his line. Tony Brown scored from the second kick to level the game with one of his eight strikes past the reds. 1992 - John Barnes bagged a treble on his comeback from a five-month injury lay-off, including a last-minute penalty, as we won 4-0 at Rob Jones’ former club Crewe Alexandra in an FA Cup Third Round tie as we set off towards Wembley glory. This remains our most recent FA Cup hat-trick away from home, with Steve McManaman opening the scoring. This was one of just two victories we enjoyed in our green and white Adidas away kit. Carroll’s day 1989 – Centre-forward Andy Carroll was born in Gateshead. He signed from Newcastle United for a club record £35m on transfer deadline day in January 2011 after 33 goals in 91 games for his boyhood club, including one in their 3-1 defeat of the reds at St. James’ Park in December 2010. He struck eleven times in 58 reds games, moving to West Ham United for their club record £15.5m fee in June 2013 after spending the previous season on loan at Upton Park. 1998 – Keeper Shamal George was born in Wirral. He joined the reds in 2009, making his first appearance for the first-team in our friendly win at Huddersfield Town in July 2016, as an outfield player! He moved on to Colchester United in August 2020. 1940 – Welsh full-back Allan Jones was born in Flint. He signed as an amateur in April 1955, turning professional two years later. He played five times before moving to Brentford in August 1963. 1876 – Inside-right Andrew McCowie was born in Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Cambuslang Hibernian in October 1896, netting eleven times in 35 games before joining Woolwich Arsenal in May 1899. In and out 2016 – Midfielder Marko Grujić signed from Crvena Zvezda for £5.1m and then was immediately loaned back. After arriving permanently that summer, he netted once in sixteen senior appearances, moving on to Porto permanently in July 2021 after a loan spell. On the same day, Luis Suárez was voted fifth in the Ballon d’Or, with fellow ex-red Javier Mascherano coming in fourteenth as Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo claimed the trophy. Held by the Hatters 2008 - We were held to a 1-1 draw at League One side Luton Town, with a John Arne Riise own goal cancelling out a Peter Crouch strike. We comfortably won the replay, but were then eliminated from the FA Cup at home by Barnsley at the Fifth Round stage. Off at the double 1912 - William Stuart scored his only reds goal on his debut as we won 3-2 at Manchester City’s old Hyde Road ground. John Bovill struck his seventh and final reds goal in this game, with Jack Parkinson also on target as George Wynn nabbed a brace for the home side. Danny the champion 2008 - Centre-back Daniel Agger was named Denmark’s Footballer of the Year. He had played just 27 times for the reds in 2007, including the Champions League Final in Athens. Le debutant 2001 - Grégory Vignal made his reds bow as we beat Second Division Rotherham United 3-0 at home in an FA Cup Third Round encounter. Emile Heskey bagged a brace, to go with a rare Dietmar Hamann strike. Igor Bišcan was sent off as we began another Cup-winning run. Live on the Beeb 1984 - The first FA Cup tie outside the Final to be screened live in the UK was shown by the BBC on a Friday evening. Ian Rush netted a brace as we beat a Newcastle United side that included ex-reds Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott 4-0 in the Third Round, with Michael Robinson and Craig Johnston also on target. However, we lost at Brighton & Hove Albion in the next round. Cup disappointment 1951 - We lost 3-1 at Norwich City, our first defeat in the FA Cup Third Round since we had also been knocked out by the Canaries fourteen years earlier. Tom Docherty netted twice, with Noel Kinsey also on target for the home side. Jack Balmer bagged our late consolation. Reds deaths 1989 – Keeper Dave Underwood died. He signed from Watford for £7,000 in December 1953, playing fifty reds games before returning to Vicarage Road in July 1956. 2004 – Forward John Evans died. He was signed at the fourth attempt from Charlton Athletic in December 1953 for £12,500, but we suffered relegation in his first season at Anfield. His greatest moment with the reds came when he netted all our goals in a 5-3 defeat of Bristol Rovers in September 1954. Overall, he struck 53 times in 107 reds games before joining Colchester United in December 1957. 2005 - The funeral of post-war left-back Eddie Spicer took place at St Cwyfan's Church, Llangwyfan, near Denbigh. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving in the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to net twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title as well as playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. Wartime goalscoring feats 1918 - Thomas Bennett scored in his fifth consecutive game as we beat Preston North End 3-1 at Anfield in a Wartime League fixture, grabbing a brace with right-half John Bamber also on target. 1940 - Billy Liddell bagged a treble as we won 7-3 at Manchester City, with Willie Fagan and Berry Nieuwenhuys scoring twice apiece. Beating the Blues We have twice seen off Chelsea at Anfield on this day in history. 1923 - Billy Lacey struck the only goal of our top-flight encounter late on, his 29th and last reds goal. Forward Jack Sambrook appeared for the second and final time. 1962 - We won an FA Cup Third Round meeting by the odd goal in seven, with Ian St. John netting twice and Roger Hunt and Alan A’Court also on the scoresheet, as we led 4-1 at the break. We were eventually knocked out by Preston North End in the Fifth Round. Bobby Tambling bagged the first two of his eight goals past us, with Barry Bridges also on target for the Londoners. Reds in charge 1993 - Ex-red Richard Money took over as boss of Sc***horpe United, having previously held the role in a Caretaker capacity while an Iron player. He led them to mid-table in the Fourth Division that season, and again the following year before he left that summer. 2009 – Nigel Clough was appointed Manager of Derby County, as a replacement for Jewell. He remained in charge until being sacked in September 2013. 1998 - Former reserves forward Paul Jewell was appointed Manager of Bradford City. He led them into the Premiership in his first full season, before resigning after keeping them up the following year. 2015 – Jewell was named Joint Assistant Manager of West Bromwich Albion. However, he quit just seven days later after being asked to take a pay cut. On the move 1995 - Ex-reserves winger John Jeffers joined Second Division Shrewsbury Town on loan from Port Vale. He played five games for the Shrews, netting once. 2011 – Keeper Tony Warner signed for Tranmere Rovers, playing 25 times until the end of that season. Fagan for the Scots 1945 - Willie Fagan scored for a Scottish Services XI as they drew 2-2 with Belgium in Brussels. Fellow reds Jim Harley and Billy Liddell both also played. A big win 1894 - We won 4-1 at Rotherham Town in our first game on this day in history. James Stott grabbed a brace with Hugh McQueen and David Henderson also scoring as we conceded our first goal following six consecutive clean sheets, scored by Frank Turner Jr. Other reds games 1990 – Swansea City held us to a goalless draw in our FA Cup Third Round meeting at Vetch Field, trouncing them 8-0 in the Anfield replay, making it as far as the Semi-final that season. 1973 – Kevin Keegan headed in the only goal of our trip to West Ham United. 1934 – We drew 2-2 at Sheffield United, with Bert Oswald putting the Blades in front before Syd Roberts and Alf Hanson struck. Jack Pickering equalised late on with the last of his five goals past us. 1906 – We shared a goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers. 1900 – We lost 1-0 at Sunderland. Career extremes 2007 – Joe Allen signed as a professional for Swansea City, having been part of their youth set-up since the age of nine. He struck seven goals in 150 first-team appearances for the Swans before arriving at Anfield for £15m in August 2012. 2010 - Patrik Berger announced his retirement from football due to persistent knee injuries. He struck 35 times in 196 reds games after his £3.25m capture from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund following a successful Euro ‘96 with the Czech Republic, and finished his career back with his first club, Sparta Praha.
