Happy birthday Mr Kennedy 1951 - Ray Kennedy was born in Seaton Delavel. After five successful years as a forward with Arsenal, Bob Paisley converted him into a left-sided midfielder following his club record £180,000 arrival as Bill Shankly’s last signing in July 1974. He won six League titles, three European Cups, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields before joining John Toshack’s Swansea City in January 1982, striking 72 times in 393 reds games. Robbie arrives 2008 - Robbie Keane signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £19.3m. He struck seven times in 28 reds outings before returning to north London for an initial £15m fee the following February. He grabbed fifteen goals in 52 games in his second spell with Spurs before moving on to LA Galaxy for £3.5m in August 2011, while also being loaned out to Celtic and West Ham United. On the same day, ex-red El-Hadji Diouf joined Sunderland from Bolton Wanderers for £2.5m, after a total of 24 goals in 136 games for the Trotters. Razor sheathed 1992 - Ray Houghton was sold to Aston Villa for £900,000 as Graeme Souness tried to reduce the number of non-Englishmen in the squad, to comply with UEFA regulations for European competition. He had netted 38 times in 202 reds games, helping us to claim two League titles, two FA Cups and the FA Charity Shield. In comes Harvey 2019 – Winger Harvey Elliott signed from Fulham for a fee eventually set at an initial £1.2m, having become the youngest ever to play in both the Premier League and League Cup while with the Cottagers. He made his senior bow on the same day as we lost 3-0 to SSC Napoli at Murrayfield in Edinburgh. He netted ten times in 119 senior appearances across his first five years with the reds, helping us to claim two League Cups and the FA Community Shield. 2020 – Northern Irish youngster Conor Bradley signed for the reds as a professional. He has so far struck once in 28 senior reds appearances, already helping us to claim the League Cup. 1992 - England international Paul Stewart signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £2.3m. That same day he made his reds bow in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Rosenborg BK in Vålerenga. His time at Anfield was a failure, as he scored just three times in 42 appearances in nearly four seasons. He left for Sunderland on a free transfer in March 1996. 1972 – Midfielder Trevor Storton signed from Tranmere Rovers for £25,000, having struck eight times in 118 League games. He only played twelve times in two years before joining Chester in June 1974, for whom he turned out more than 400 times. Shaq off the mark 2018 – Xherdan Shaqiri scored in his first reds game as we thumped Manchester United 4-1 in an International Champions Cup game in Michigan, with Sadio Mané and Sheyi Ojo both scoring from the spot and Daniel Sturridge also on target. Four for Fagan 1945 - Willie Fagan scored four times, including two penalties, as we thumped an RAF XI 7-0 in Germany shortly after the end of hostilities. Legendary forward Billy Liddell bagged a brace, with Jack Balmer completing the scoring. Fernando the champion 2002 - Future red Fernando Torres bagged the only goal of the Final of the European Championships for Spain Under-19’s as they beat their German counterparts in Oslo. This was the third consecutive Under-19’s game in which he had scored. Reds firsts 2012 – Fabio Borini played his first reds game in a dour goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur in Baltimore on our North American tour. 2014 – Herbie Kane skippered England Under-17’s while making his debut at this level as they thumped Iceland 5-1 in a Nordic Tournament group game in Denmark, with Trent Alexander-Arnold also featuring. On the same day, future red Marko Grujić played for Serbia Under-19’s in their goalless draw with Portugal in their European Championships Semi-final, with Portugal going through to the Final after a penalty shoot-out. New boys off the mark 1997 - New signing Øyvind Leonhardsen and young winger Mark Kennedy both scored their first reds goals in a 6-0 rout of Shelbourne in Dublin, each netting twice. Danny Murphy also struck his first reds goal, with Steve McManaman adding the other. Red Scots deaths 1967 – Scottish centre-half David Pratt died. He played 84 times for the reds after signing from Bradford City in January 1923, scoring just once and being known for his long throw-ins. He left Anfield to sign for Bury in November 1927. 1960 – Scottish inside-right Jimmy Stewart died. He arrived from Motherwell in April 1909, bagging 26 goals in 63 outings before joining Hamilton Academical in January 1914. 1943 – Scottish outside-right Tom Wyllie died. He bagged fifteen goals in 25 senior games after signing from Everton in 1982, as well as scoring the only goal of the first ever derby meeting with his former club, in the Liverpool Senior Cup Final in 1893. He moved on to Bury later that year. Starting out 1996 - We were held to a goalless draw at Goodison Park in the third-place play-off of a friendly tournament also featuring Borussia Mönchengladbach and Porto, to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Sir John Moores CBE. Jamie Carragher made his first reds appearance, playing at right wing-back in place of the injured Jason McAteer. 2016 – Winger Harry Wilson signed a new contract. He made his reds bow in January 2017 in our FA Cup Third Round replay win at Plymouth Argyle, but only made one further first-team appearance. He was sold to Fulham for a reported £12m in July 2021 after a successful loan spell. Scandinavian reds 1987 - Steve Nicol was on target as we drew 1-1 with Danish side Brønshøj at the Ringsted Stadion. Play was stopped briefly during the second half when a rabbit ran onto the pitch! 1991 - We were held to a goalless draw at Sirius in Sweden. Cleaned out by Ajax 2001 - We lost our closing fixture in the pre-season Amsterdam Tournament, going down 3-1 to Ajax. Jari Litmanen featured against his old side, while Robbie Fowler was on the scoresheet. Other pre-season games 1971 - Chris Lawler netted from long range as we beat Wrexham 1-0 in a testimonial game for Arfon Griffiths at the Racecourse Ground. 1993 - Ian Rush scored as we drew 1-1 at Birmingham City in the T.N.T. Inter-City Challenge Cup. We lost the resulting penalty shoot-out 4-3. 2007 - A Liverpool XI was held to a 1-1 friendly draw at Colchester United, with Miki Roqué volleying our goal. 2011 – We lost 3-0 at Galatasaray. 2013 – We beat the Thailand national side 3-0 in Bangkok, with Philippe Coutinho, Iago Aspas and Steven Gerrard on target. South coast moves 2009 - Peter Crouch joined Tottenham Hotspur from Portsmouth. He had struck sixteen times in 49 outings in this second spell with Pompey. 2006 - David Thompson moved to Fratton Park, having been released by Wigan Athletic at the end of the previous season. He featured just fifteen times for Pompey before moving to Bolton Wanderers the following January. Tosh for Charlie 1969 - Future red John Toshack played for Wales as they lost 1-0 to a Rest Of UK side at Ninian Park, in a game played to mark the investiture of the Prince of Wales, and raise funds for the Aberfan Disaster Fund. Internationals in action 2013 – Future reds midfielder Naby Keïta featured as Guinea beat Mali 1-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Conakry. 2009 – Conor Coady and future red Conor Thomas made their debuts for England Under-17’s as they drew 1-1 with Denmark in the Nordic Tournament in Trondheim, with Andre Wisdom also featuring. 2002 - Michael Foley-Sheridan appeared for the Republic of Ireland Under-19’s in the European Championship Finals third place play-off, which they lost 2-1 to Slovakia in Oslo. 1997 – Future red Haukur Ingi Gudnason won his seventeenth and last Under-19’s cap as Iceland drew 2-2 with Hungary in a European Championships group game. 1988 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played as Brazil held Norway to a 1-1 friendly draw in Oslo. Ged in charge 1993 - Future reds boss Gérard Houllier led France to a 3-1 friendly win over Russia in Caen. Frank Sauzée, Eric Cantona and Jean-Pierre Papin netted for Les Bleus. Olympian ends 2008 – Lucas Leiva featured for a Brazil Olympic XI in their 3-0 defeat of a Singapore Select XI in the Stadium of Singapore, in what was the last match before the stadium was demolished later that year. 2021 – Alexis Mac Allister won his ninth and final cap for Argentina Under-23’s as they drew 1-1 with Spain in the Olympics in Japan, while future red Wataru Endō appeared for the host nation as they beat France 4-0 in Yokohama. On the move again 1987 - Future reds loanee keeper Alec Chamberlain joined Everton from Ipswich Town for £80,000, although he never made the first team before moving on to Luton Town for £150,000 a year later. 2005 - Ex-reserves midfielder Neil Prince signed for Conference North outfit Stalybridge Celtic three years ago, after impressing on a trial. He left in May 2007 after seventeen strikes in 84 appearances. 2010 – Ex-reds winger Mark Kennedy joined Ipswich Town for £75,000 from Cardiff City. He had failed to find the net in 79 outings for the Bluebirds. 2011 – Midfielder Momo Sissoko joined Paris Saint-Germain from Juventus for an initial €7m, netting twice in 35 outings, before having his contract terminated in September 2013. 2015 - Spanish forward Dani Pacheco joined Deportivo Alavés on loan from Real Betis Balompié, netting three times in 38 outings as they claimed the Segunda División title. 2017 – Midfielder Adam Phillips signed for Norwich City, having his contract cancelled in February 2019 having failed to make a senior appearance. On the same day, right-back Connor Randall joined Heart Of Midlothian on loan, turning out 27 times for the Jam Tarts. 2022 – Midfielder Lee Peltier signed for Rotherham United, scoring once in 36 outings in his first campaign with the Millers. 2023 – Left-back Adam Lewis re-joined Newport County on loan, scoring twice in thirty games in this spell, before being released by the reds at the end of the season. -
Le Boss arrives 1998 - The reds tried a bold move as Gérard Houllier was appointed joint Manager alongside Roy Evans. The partnership only lasted four months before Uncle Roy stepped aside. Ged remained in charge until May 2004, leading us to the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield. 2010 - Brendan Rodgers was appointed Manager of Swansea City. He guided them to promotion from the Championship via the play-offs in his first campaign, and eleventh in the Premiership the following year before moving to Anfield in June 2012. Adios Luis 2014 - Luis Suárez was sold to Barcelona for a club record £75m, having struck 82 times in 133 reds games since his arrival from Ajax for a club record fee of £22.8m in January 2011, capturing the hearts of all reds. He helped us to claim the League Cup the following season, helping the Catalans to the UEFA Champions League and four La Liga titles amongst many honours before joining Club Atlético de Madrid in September 2020. The final piece of the jigsaw 1997 - Paul Ince was signed by Roy Evans from Internazionale for £4.2m. His Anfield career started well, but then faded, and he was moved on by Gérard Houllier as he had become a disruptive influence in the dressing room. He struck seventeen times in 81 reds games during his two years at Anfield. Sir Roger at the World Cup 1966 - Roger Hunt was on target at Wembley as England beat Mexico 2-0 in their second group game at the World Cup Finals. Brian’s farewell 2015 – Midfielder Brian Hall died. He signed for the reds in July 1968 fresh from graduating university, and scored 21 goals in 224 games, helping us to claim a League title, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield. His most memorable moment came when he bagged his first reds goal, the FA Cup Semi-final winner against Everton at Old Trafford in March 1971, also scoring at the same stage against Leicester City three years later. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in July 1976, later finishing his playing career with Burnley, but he returned to Anfield in 1991 to take up the post of Public Relations Manager, a position he held until retiring in 2012. Debuting against the Germans 2003 - Harry Kewell played his first reds game as we won a friendly 3-1 at 1. FC Köln. Michael Owen nabbed a brace, with Emile Heskey also on target. The game was played to commemorate their redeveloped RheinEnergie Stadion. 2005 - Momo Sissoko had his first reds outing as we beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 3-0 in Lustenau, Austria. Djibril Cissé struck twice, with Milan Baroš also on target. Willkommen Didi 1999 - It was announced that Newcastle United midfielder Dietmar Hamann had agreed to join the reds, after a possible move to Arsenal had broken down. He signed a week later, and made 283 first-team appearances, acting as a sturdy bulwark in front of the defence, and scoring just eleven times. He moved on to Manchester City in July 2006, having helped us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, two FA Cups, two League Cups and the FA Charity Shield. A divine treble 1999 - Robbie Fowler netted a hat-trick as we thumped a German XI 8-0 in St. Gallen, at the end of our Swiss training camp. Titi Camara scored in his first appearance for the reds, while Sander Westerveld also made his Liverpool bow. Patrik Berger added a brace, with Vegard Heggem and Danny Murphy also on the scoresheet. 2008 – We also played a friendly in Switzerland, beating Luzern 2-1 in Grenchen, thanks to goals from Lucas and Andriy Voronin. Off the mark 2014 – Winger Kristoffer Peterson struck for the club for the first time as we lost 2-1 at Brøndby IF, with centre-halves Tiago Ilori and Lloyd Jones, midfielders Adam Phillips and Jordan Rossiter, and defender Kevin Stewart all playing their first games for the reds. 2011 – Charlie Adam bagged his first goal for the reds, converting a twice-taken penalty as we beat a Malaysia XI 6-3 in front of 84,000 fans in the Stadium Nasional Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur. David N’Gog and Maxi Rodríguez bagged a brace each, with Dirk Kuyt also on target. Singapore sling 2001 - The reds played their first ever match in Singapore, beating a Singapore League Select XI 2-0 thanks to goals from strike partners Emile Heskey and Michael Owen. Auf wiedersehen 2004 - Markus Babbel signed for VfB Stuttgart on a free transfer. He helped them to finish fifth in the Bundesliga in his first season and played a total of 46 League games for them before stepping down as a player in May 2007 to become assistant coach. Keepers on the move 2008 - Ex-red Tony Warner signed for Hull City. He played just twice for the Tigers before being released in February 2010. 2005 - Chris Kirkland joined West Bromwich Albion on loan after just 45 first-team games for the reds since his £6m signing from Coventry City in August 2001. He could only play twelve times for the Baggies as they were relegated, as he was once again cursed by injuries. Happy birthday Ben 2001 – Keeper Ben Winterbottom was born in Preston. He was an unused substitute in our League Cup Quarter-final thumping at Aston Villa in December 2019, having joined the club from Blackburn Rovers nine months earlier. He moved on to Brentford in January 2021. 1987 - First Team Opposition Analyst James French was born in Portugal. Having worked under Brendan Rodgers at Swansea City, he joined the reds in July 2012. International beginning and ends 2000 – Titi Camara netted his last goal as a reds player in Guinea’s 2-0 defeat of Gambia in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Conakry. On the same day, reds youngster John Welsh won his second Under-16’s cap for England in their 2-1 defeat by Brazil in a Nationwide-sponsored tournament at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light. Welsh played at right-back in front of a record Under-16’s crowd of 21,061. 2003 - Javier Mascherano made his senior international debut, before he had even played a first-team game for River Plate. Argentina were held to a 2-2 draw by Uruguay in a friendly in La Plata. 2015 – Future red Kostas Tsimikas won his thirteenth and final cap for Greece Under-19’s as they lost their European Championships Semi-final 4-0 to Russia in Larissa. Ex-reds on the move 1993 - Peter Beardsley re-signed for Newcastle United from Everton for £1.4m. He had been at St. James’ Park for four years immediately before arriving at Anfield, and his second spell lasted as long, netting 56 times in 157 outings as he helped the Toon to back-to-back second-place finishes in the Premiership. 1996 - Dean Saunders left Galatasaray for Nottingham Forest in a £1.5m deal. He could only grab nine goals in 51 games while at the City Ground, as Forest were relegated from the top flight in his only full season there. 2003 - Andy Parkinson, who was in the victorious FA Youth Cup squad in 1996, joined Sheffield United on a free transfer from Tranmere Rovers after 25 goals in 203 games for Rovers. 2013 – Centre-half Jack Hobbs joined Nottingham Forest on loan from Hull City, making the move permanent the following January. More internationals on target 2011 - Luis Suárez scored in a penalty shoot-out as Uruguay beat Argentina 5-4 after their Copa América Quarter-final ended 1-1 in Santa Fe. Ex-red Mascherano was sent off for the home side. 2007 - Harry Kewell came off the bench to grab one of Australia’s goals in their 4-0 thumping of Thailand in an AFC Asian Cup group game in Bangkok. 2003 – Future red Alberto Aquilani bagged the only goal of the game from the spot as Italy Under-19’s beat Norway in a European Championships Finals group game in Liechtenstein. John Welsh featured in the same competition as England lost 2-1 to Austria. Also in international action 1987 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye featured as Norway Under-19’s thumped Finland 5-0 in a tournament game in Denmark. 1989 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played as Brazil beat Uruguay 1-0 in a final round game in the Copa América in Rio de Janeiro, with this result ensuring they won the tournament. 2007 - Future reds Damien Plessis and Mikel San José both played in the European Championships Finals in Austria. France Under-19’s beat Serbia 5-2 in Ried im Innkreis, while Spain defeated host nation Austria 2-0 in Linz. Signing on 2021 – Polish left-winger Mateusz Musiałowski signed pro terms with the reds, having joined the Academy the previous August. He made his only senior appearance in our 6-1 thrashing of Sparta Praha in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie at Anfield in March 2024, being released at the end of that season. On the move 1987 - Future reds centre-half John Scales signed for Wimbledon from Bristol Rovers for £70,000. He made 288 appearances for the Dons, scoring fifteen times, before coming to Anfield in a £3.5m deal in September 1994. 2009 – Winger Stewart Downing joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough for £12m after 22 strikes in 234 games for his hometown club. 2015 - Downing re-joined Middlesbrough from West Ham United for £5.5m after seven goals in 79 outings for the Irons. Reserves off on loan 2008 – Left-back Robbie Threlfall re-joined Hereford United on loan, playing four times in this spell. 2007 - Winger Paul Anderson joined Swansea City on loan, going on to bag nine goals in 41 outings and be named their Young Player of the Year. 2000 - Forward Haukur Ingi Gudnason joined Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur on loan. He had not managed to break into the reds first-team since his arrival in December 1997, rejoining them three years later. A-L-B-E-R-T, Albert Stubbins is the man for me 1919 - Legendary reds centre-forward Albert Stubbins was born in Wallsend. He signed from Newcasle United for a British record £12,500 fee in September 1946 and struck 83 times in 178 reds matches, helping to power us to the first League championship played after the Second World War. He became a scout for the club in 1954, a post he held for the rest of the decade, He was also the only footballer to appear on the cover of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album. Forwards moving in 2018 – Xherdan Shaqiri signed from Stoke City for £13.75m, notching eight times in 63 outings before moving to Olympique Lyonnais for €6m in August 2021, helping us to claim the Premier League title and FIFA Club World Cup, as well as remaining on the bench as we claimed the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup. 2012 - Fabio Borini signed from Roma for £10.4m to become new boss Brendan Rodgers’ first capture. His first campaign was badly interrupted by injuries as he notched twice in twenty reds games, before spending the next season on loan at Sunderland. However, he only netted once in a further eighteen outings before joining the Mackems permanently for £8m in August 2015. On the same day, Maxi Rodríguez left the club to join Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys back in his native Argentina after seventeen goals in 73 outings since arriving for free from Club Atlético de Madrid in January 2010. 2007 - Ryan Babel signed from Ajax for £11.5m. He proved a very useful asset in his first season, especially from the bench, as he equalled Djibril Cissé’s club record of seven strikes in a season as a substitute. However, subsequent campaigns were far less productive, and he struck a total of 22 times in 146 appearances before being sold to German side TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for £6m in January 2011. Bellamy born 1979 - Craig Bellamy was born in Cardiff. He arrived from Blackburn Rovers for £6m in June 2006 with his one season in his first spell in L4 only being a partial success. He grabbed nine goals in 42 games, with his finest moment coming in the Camp Nou as he scored a crucial goal in our 2-1 victory to help us progress towards Athens. He was sold to West Ham United for £7.5m in July 2007, then the record fee paid by the Irons. He returned to Anfield on a free transfer from Manchester City last August, netting nine times in 37 games and helping us to claim the Carling Cup before joining his hometown club for free in August 2012. On the same day, recent Fitness Coach Eduardo Parra García was born in Vigo. He began working in football as a fitness coach for teams in his native Galicia, before joining Real Club Celta de Vigo in 2007. He later followed Rafael Benítez to Internazionale. Happy birthday Vedgy 1975 - Vegard Heggem was born in Trondheim in Norway. His five years at Anfield were ravaged by hamstring injuries, after becoming the only signing made by the joint management team of Roy Evans and Gérard Houllier, for £3.5m in July 1998. He could only make 65 appearances before being released in June 2003, scoring three times. Kicking off early 2005 - We started the season proper in July for the first time ever, beating Total Network Solutions 3-0 at Anfield in the first leg of our Champions League first qualifying round tie, thanks to Steven Gerrard’s first treble. Pepe Reina and Bolo Zenden both made their first-class reds debuts, in front of our biggest home European attendance since we hosted Nottingham Forest in September 1978. Mixed World Cup fortunes 2014 – Ex-red Javier Mascherano played as Argentina lost the World Cup Final 1-0 to Germany in Rio de Janeiro. 1994 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel appeared for Brazil in their 1-0 win over Sweden in their Semi-final in Pasadena. They went on to lift the trophy. Starting off well 2013 – Iago Aspas netted in his first reds outing as we thumped Preston North End 4-0 to claim the Shankly Shield at Deepdale. Forward Luis Alberto, centre-half Kolo Touré and keepers Simon Mignolet and Danny Ward also played their first reds games. Young winger Jordon Ibe bagged his first goal for the club, after Philippe Coutinho had opened the scoring from the spot with Raheem Sterling also on target. 2016 – Midfielder Marko Grujić scored in his first reds game as we thumped Fleetwood Town 5-0 in a friendly at their Highbury Stadium. Forward Ben Woodburn netted his first goal for the club, with Roberto Firmino nabbing a brace and Lucas Leiva also on target, while Danny Ings had a penalty saved. Debuting in the Far East 2011 - Conor Coady scored in his first reds game as we beat Guangdong Sunray Cave 4-3 in Guangzhou, with Christian Poulsen nabbing his only reds goal. Charlie Adam and Andre Wisdom both debuted for the reds, with David N’Gog and Andy Carroll also on target. On the same day, Lucas featured as Brazil beat Ecuador 4-2 in a Copa América group game in Argentina. Anfield in mourning 2001 - The funeral of Tom Saunders was held. The former Youth Development Officer and long-standing Director also spent many years as a European ‘spy’ for the club, checking out upcoming opponents. He also managed the England Schoolboys and Under-18’s during his career, being well loved at Anfield. Club for sale 1999 - Granada bought a 9.9% stake in Liverpool Football Club for £22m. A statement said, “The boards of Liverpool and Granada are pleased to have announced they have entered into a ground-breaking strategic partnership.” Management moves 1999 - Steve Nicol was appointed head coach of Boston Bulldogs. He led them to the Third Division title, before moving to New England Revolution, whom he took to the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference Final in his first season in charge. 2013 - Kevin MacDonald left as Manager of Swindon Town by mutual consent, having only been in the role for five months. Starting out 1989 - Stan Collymore signed as a professional for Wolverhampton Wanderers. He was only at Molineux for a year, without making the first team, before moving to non-League Stafford Rangers. 2020 – Left-back Adam Lewis signed a new contract with the reds. He had made his senior debut in an FA Cup Fourth Round replay win over Shrewsbury Town at Anfield in February 2020, spending the 2021/22 season on loan at Livingston. Old boys lose their title 2003 - Reigning champions Liverpool bowed out of the Masters Tournament after finishing third in the North West Series of the legends football in Manchester. The reds team consisted of John Aldridge, goalkeeper Bob Bolder, John Durnin, Gary Gillespie, Ray Houghton, Alan Kennedy, Jan Mølby, Phil Neal, Michael Thomas and Ronnie Whelan. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells, first arriving from Barnsley St. Peter’s in November 1903. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He only played five times in this second spell. 2016 – Winger Sergi Canós was sold to Norwich City for an initial £2.5m, netting three times in nine first-team games before joining fellow Championship side Brentford on loan. On the same day, midfielder Ryan Flynn joined Oldham Athletic from Sheffield United after nineteen goals in 119 games for the Blades. 2018 – Midfielder Adam Phillips joined Hamilton Academical on loan from Norwich City, playing just two senior games while in Scotland. 2022 – Winger Sheyi Ojo signed permanently for Cardiff City, having previously had a loan spell with the Bluebirds. In international action 1988 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel featured for Brazil in their 4-1 defeat of Saudi Arabia in a Australia Bicentenary Gold Cup group game in Melbourne. 1991 – Taffarel played for Brazil again as they lost 2-0 Colombia in a Copa América group game in Chile. 1995 – Taffarel represented his country once more, this time in a 3-0 defeat of Colombia in another Copa América group game, this time in Uruguay. 1999 - Brad Friedel played for the USA as they met Derby County in a friendly in Denver. 2004 - Arnaud Bühler played for Switzerland Under-19’s as they drew 1-1 with Italy in a European Championships qualifier. On the same day, future red Javier Mascherano featured for Argentina as they beat Uruguay 4-2 in a Copa América group game in Peru. 2007 - Harry Kewell featured as Australia lost 3-1 to Iraq in an AFC Asian Cup group game in Bangkok. 2011 – Lucas Leiva played for Brazil in their 4-2 defeat of Ecuador in a Copa América group game in Argentina. -
Farewell to a legend 1978 - Ian Callaghan made his 640th and final League appearance, almost eighteen years after his debut. Unfortunately, this came in a 1-0 reverse at Coventry City. His final ever reds appearance came eight weeks later, in our European Cup Semi-final first leg at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Tons up 2023 – Mohamed Salah made his 200th League appearance for the reds as we lost 3-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. We fell behind early when Hwang Hee-chan’s cross deflected off Joël Matip. Craig Dawson then netted on his debut, with Rúben Neves on target after the break. 2015 – Steven Gerrard played his 700th reds game as we came from behind to win 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay. Eiður Guðjohnsen opened the scoring from the spot after an hour, the last of his four goals against us, before Neil Danns was sent off for the Trotters. However, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho both struck late on past future reds keeper Andy Lonergan to send us through. Phil Babb saw red for a professional foul on Steve Stone. Future red Stan Collymore had opened the scoring with the first of his three goals against us. 1925 - We also travelled to the City Ground, when Jock McNab grabbed the only goal of the game. Youngsters see off the Shrews 2020 – Ro-Shaun Williams diverted a Neco Williams cross into his own net for the only goal of the game as the youngest ever side in the club’s history, aged nineteen years and 102 days, beat League One side Shrewsbury Town in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay at Anfield. Under-23’s Coach Neil Critchley took charge of a team captained by Curtis Jones, becoming our youngest ever skipper at the age of nineteen and five days, with the first team taking the inaugural Premier League winter break. Midfielders Jake Cain and Elijah Dixon-Bonner and forward Joe Hardy all debuted with left-back Adam Lewis and forward Liam Millar making their only senior appearances, as defenders Ki-Jana Hoever and Sepp van den Berg played their fourth and last reds games and midfielder Pedro Chirivella turned out for the eleventh and final time. Stalemates galore This day has proven to be a day of draws in our history, with nine of our 22 first-class matches ending in stalemate, including four of the last seven. 2019 – We were held 1-1 by West Ham United at the London Stadium. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, with Michail Antonio equalising inside half an hour, one of his six goals past us to date. Young substitute Dan Gosling bagged the winner with just two minutes remaining. God on the move 2009 - Robbie Fowler signed for North Queensland Fury, who play in the Australian A-League. He bagged nine goals in 26 outings before moving on to Perth Glory. Red debuts 1928 - We suffered our first home League defeat to West Ham United when Dick Edmed was on target from the spot as we lost 3-1, with forward Bob Clark making his debut. Jimmy Ruffell bagged two of his four strikes past the reds, with Vic Watson nabbing one of his nine goals against us. 1954 - Forward Derek Brownbill was born in Liverpool. He only made one senior reds appearance, in a 1-1 draw at Birmingham City in September 1973, when he was replaced by our goalscorer, Brian Hall. After leaving Anfield in February 1975, he played more than 140 League games for Port Vale and Wigan Athletic, before emigrating to the USA to play for Cleveland Cobras. International bows 1922 - Long-serving reds left-back Donald McKinlay won the first of his two caps for Scotland in a 2-1 defeat by Wales in the British International Championships in Wrexham. Africans on target 2002 - Future reds Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both scored in Senegal’s 2-0 African Cup of Nations Quarter-final defeat of DR Congo in Mali, with this being Diao’s first strike for his country. Meanwhile, ex-red Rigobert Song captained Cameroon in their 1-0 win over Egypt. 2006 - Song and future red Kolo Touré both converted in a penalty shoot-out after Cameroon’s Quarter-final with Ivory Coast in Cairo ended in a 1-1 draw. Song skippered his country to a 12-11 victory on penalties. 2008 - Rigobert was captain again as they beat Tunisia 3-2 after extra time to reach the Semi-finals once more. 2012 – Future red Touré played in the Ivory Coast’s 3-0 defeat of host nation Equatorial Guinea in a Quarter-final in Malabo. 2015 – Touré featured again as Ivory Coast beat Congo DR 3-1 in the Semi-final in Equatorial Guinea. Almost in charge 2008 - Steve Staunton was appointed Assistant Manager of Leeds United under Gary McAllister. He remained at Elland Road for ten months, leaving in the wake of Gary Mac’s sacking. 2010 – Ex-reds coach Paco Herrera was appointed Manager of Villarreal reserves, but only stayed in the role for four months. Final caps 2000 - Reserves forward Haukur Ingi Gudnason won his third and final cap as a reds player, as a substitute in a 3-2 Nordic Cup defeat of the Faroe Islands in La Manga. 1992 - Øyvind Leonhardsen won his last cap as a Molde player, his eleventh in total, as Norway beat Bermuda 3-1 in a friendly in Hamilton. Fellow future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played. 1976 - Joey Jones won his fourth and final Under-23’s cap for Wales, and only one as a red, in their 3-2 defeat by Scotland in Wrexham. Red trebles 1964 - Ian St. John scored three in a 6-1 First Division win over Sheffield United at Anfield. Roger Hunt bagged a brace, with Peter Thompson also on the scoresheet. 1913 - Arthur Metcalf bagged a treble in our first ever FA Cup meeting with the Gunners, then known as Woolwich Arsenal. We won 4-1 at the Manor Ground to reach the Third Round, with Billy Lacey also on target. Unfortunately, we went out to Newcastle United at the next hurdle. 1975 - We also faced Arsenal, losing a top-flight encounter 2-0 at Highbury as Alan Ball netted two of his eleven goals against the reds. John Toshack reached a century of League appearances for us that day. Hunting a new record 1969 - Roger Hunt bagged the only goal of the game against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield, taking him past Gordon Hodgson to become our all-time record scorer in the League with 234, still a club record. Setting another record 2020 - The reds beat Southampton 4-0 to Anfield to ensure that we defeated all our opponents in a top-flight League season for the first time, although the score was goalless at half time. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring, before Jordan Henderson netted and Mohamed Salah added a brace. This ensured we had a 22-point lead at the top of the table, the greatest ever at the end of a day of top-flight football. On the same day, former reds Assistant Manager Željko Buvac was appointed Sporting Director of Dynamo Moskva. Robbie’s return 2006 - Robbie Fowler came off the bench to make his first appearance in his second spell with the reds, shortly after Steven Gerrard had opened the scoring in our home Premiership meeting with Birmingham City. Robbie even had a late winner correctly ruled out for offside, while Daniel Agger made his reds bow in a game that was Rafael Benítez’s hundredth in charge. Damien Johnson was sent off for the visitors, who equalised through a Xabi Alonso own goal in the dying minutes to deny us a club record eleventh consecutive clean sheet. Nando off the mark 2005 - We won 2-1 at Charlton Athletic thanks to Fernando Morientes’ first reds goal and a John Arne Riise strike, as we came from behind, with ex-red Danny Murphy taking the corner that led to Shaun Bartlett’s opener. Jamie Carragher played his 241st League game for the reds, a club Premiership record, while Vladimír Šmicer came on as a late substitute for Morientes to make his first appearance of the season. Spackman sold 1989 - Nigel Spackman was sold to Queens Park Rangers for £500,000 after losing his place to Ronnie Whelan. He had made 63 first-team appearances without scoring, winning a League title medal in his one full season at Anfield. Up against the Blues 1992 - We lost 2-1 at home to Chelsea, with Ronnie Rosenthal netting for the reds after Vinnie Jones had put the visitors in front. This was Chelsea’s first League win at Anfield since December 1935. 2009 – Frank Lampard was sent off as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield thanks to two late Fernando Torres goals to secure our 200th win in the Premier League, after Xabi Alonso had hit the crossbar. José Bosingwa amazingly escaped punishment for an assault on Yossi Benayoun right in front of the assistant referee in stoppage time. Alf off the mark 1933 – Outside-right Alf Hanson bagged the first of his 52 reds goals as Middlesbrough won 3-1 at Anfield. George Camsell netted two of his nine goals past us, with Harold Blackmore bagging the last of his five against the reds. Forward Ted Hancock played his tenth and last reds game. Alles Gute zum Geburtstag 1972 - Christian Ziege was born in Berlin. He signed in controversial circumstances from Middlesbrough in August 2000 for £5.5m and netted twice in 32 reds games, leaving Anfield for Tottenham Hotspur after just one year having won a Worthington Cup winner’s medal. He also won the Bundesliga twice, the UEFA Cup and Serie A during his club playing career, as well as Euro ’96 with Germany. 1952 – Full-back John Webb was born in Liverpool. He joined the reds in February 1969, making it onto the first-team bench six times in 1972/73 without making a senior appearance. He moved on to Tranmere Rovers in 1974, later playing in Belgium, the Netherlands and North America. 1937 - Keeper Tony Waiters was born in Southport. He won five senior England caps in 1964 while playing for Blackpool. He left there in 1967 to take on a coaching role with the reds, but returned to playing with Burnley in 1970, playing 38 League games before becoming the Manager of Plymouth Argyle in 1972. 1886 – Full-back Harry Griffiths was born in Middlesbrough. He joined the reds in 1905 but only played six senior games before joining Chesterfield Town in June 1908. He later linked up with ex-red Maurice Parry and Alex Raisbeck at Partick Thistle. Ton up for Jim 1908 - Left-half Jim Bradley made his hundredth reds appearance as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup Second Round, with Jack Cox heading in our equaliser late on after right-half Maurice Parry had conceded a penalty converted by Jack Hall. The visitors appealed in vain that reds keeper Sam Hardy had carried the ball over the line before scrambling it round the post. This was the first game in which Anfield’s new grandstand, where the Main Stand is today, was used. More red beginnings 1902 – Inside-forward Tommy Green made the first of his seven senior reds appearances in our goalless top-flight draw at Bury, while inside-left Bill White played for the sixth and last time. 2018 – Midfielder Curtis Jones signed for the reds as a professional. He made his senior debut in our FA Cup Third Round defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2019, netting his first reds goal to secure a derby win at Anfield at the same stage a year later. He has struck sixteen times in 133 reds games across his first six campaigns, so far helping us to claim the Premier League title and FA Community Shield. Reds farewells 2014 – Forward Tony Hateley died in Preston after a long illness. He became our record signing when he joined from Chelsea in July 1967 for £96,000 and got off to a flyer at Anfield, grabbing 27 goals in 52 appearances in his first season. Unfortunately, injuries took their toll, and he was sold to Coventry City only fourteen months after arriving at the club, after 28 goals in 56 outings in total. 1997 - Stan Collymore scored the only goal of the game at Derby County, our last ever visit to the Baseball Ground. Heading to the final 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah scored in a penalty shoot-out as Egypt beat Burkina Faso 4-3 on penalties after their Semi-final in Gabon ended 1-1 after extra time. Sadly, they lost to Cameroon in the Final. Internationals on target 2022 – Takumi Minamino netted as Japan beat Saudi Arabia 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Saitama, his last goal as a reds player, with future red Wataru Endō skippering the side. Philippe Coutinho struck as Brazil thumped Paraguay 4-0 in a qualifier in Belo Horizonte, with fellow ex-red Luis Suárez on target as Uruguay beat Venezuela 4-1 in Montevideo. Luis Díaz won his first cap as a reds player as Colombia lost a qualifier 1-0 in Argentina. Fabinho and future red Darwin Núñez both also played for their countries that day. 2019 – Future red Takumi Minamino scored as Japan lost 3-1 to Qatar in the AFC Asian Cup Final in Abu Dhabi. 2004 - Ex-red Titi Camara grabbed a late equaliser for Guinea as they held the host nation to a 1-1 draw and secured their place in the Quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations. This was to be his final goal for his country. 2015 – Kolo Touré faced ex-red Carl Medjani as Ivory Coast beat Algeria 3-1 at the same stage of this competition in Equatorial Guinea. Meanwhile, future red Naby Keïta played for Guinea as they lost 3-0 to Ghana. Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-15’s as they beat the Czech Republic 4-2 in Side. 1998 – Future red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon as they lost a friendly 1-0 in the Ivory Coast. On the same day, Brad Friedel played as the USA beat Cuba 3-0 in a Gold Cup game in Oakland. 2003 – Future red Carl Medjani won his tenth and last cap for France Under-17’s, skippering them as they were held to a goalless draw by Burkina Faso in the UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup in Egypt. Kabak played thirteen times, with Davies failing to make a senior appearance and van den Berg playing sixteen games in this initial loan. Carra’s 500 2008 - Jamie Carragher was applauded onto the pitch by a guard of honour before making his 500th appearance for the club, skippering the side to a 5-0 thumping of Luton Town in our FA Cup Third Round replay at Anfield. Steven Gerrard scored a hat-trick, including a swerving 30-yard strike to complete his treble, after Ryan Babel had opened the scoring on the stroke of half time. Sami Hyypiä also netted, with ex-red Don Hutchison among the visitors’ ranks. Cup disaster 1959 - We were knocked out of the FA Cup by non-League opposition for the third and most recent time. Geoff Twentyman scored from the spot late on as we lost 2-1 at Worcester City from the Souhern League in the Third Round, with the legendary Billy Liddell missing his first FA Cup tie for the reds, after playing all forty previous post-war ties. The game had been postponed from the previous Saturday to be played on a Thursday at 2pm, and eight of the home side had been to work that morning. Tommy Skuse had opened the scoring after just ten minutes after a poor John Molyneux back-pass, with Dick White turning a Harry Knowles cross into his own net to double the home side’s lead, shortly after Twentyman had struck the angle of crossbar and post. Double debutants 2005 - Fernando Morientes and Mauricio Pellegrino both made their reds bows as we lost 1-0 at home to Manchester United thanks to Jerzy Dudek letting a Wayne Rooney strike evade his grasp, the first of his five strikes past us to date. Wes Brown was sent off for a second bookable offence, but we were unable to make the breakthrough. 1927 - We also faced United, when Dick Forshaw’s 124th and final reds goal handed us victory at Old Trafford, scoring in a club record fourth consecutive game against United. Happy birthdays 1979 - Antonio Núñez was born in Madrid. He arrived at Anfield as part of the deal that took Michael Owen to Real Madrid in August 2004 and made 27 appearances, scoring his only goal in the Carling Cup Final. He was sold to Real Club Celta de Vigo in July 2005. 1981 - El-Hadji Diouf was born in Dakar, Senegal. He was signed from Racing Club de Lens for £10m in June 2002, playing eighty games but scoring just six times. He joined Bolton Wanderers for £4.5m in June 2005 after a season-long loan. 1973 - Head of Goalkeeping Hans Leitert was born in Vienna. He joined the reds in the summer of 2024. 1983 - Jermaine Pennant was born in Nottingham. He arrived at Anfield in July 2006 for £6.7m after Birmingham City were relegated, hitting the target just three times in 81 reds games, helping us to reach the Champions League Final in his first season, although he left for Real Zaragoza in July 2009 after a five-month loan spell with Portsmouth. 1998 – Midfielder Adam Phillips was born in Garstang, Lancashire. RIP George 1950 - Scottish international inside-right George Livingstone died. He bagged four goals in 32 games after signing from Celtic in May 1902, moving on to Manchester City a year later. Mixed fortunes against the Baggies We have faced West Bromwich Albion three times on this day. 1977 - A long-range David Fairclough goal was not enough to deliver victory as Albion left Anfield with a point. 1983 - An Ian Rush strike was sufficient for us to win at The Hawthorns. 1966 - We drew 2-2 at Anfield with Gordon Milne netting and Gerry Byrne grabbing his fourth and final reds goal. Robins in the cup We have twice faced Bristol City in the First Round of the FA Cup on this day in history. 1910 - We lost 2-0 at Ashton Gate with Andy Burton netting the last of his four goals past us, and Willis Rippon bagging one of his three against the reds. 1913 - We won 3-0 at Anfield, when Billy Lacey and Ernest Peake were on the scoresheet with Arthur Goddard netting from the spot. A win at the Vicarage 2000 - David Thompson struck his fifth and final reds goal as Czech mates Patrik Berger and Vladimír Šmicer also netted to help us squeeze out Watford 3-2 at Vicarage Road, to avenge their win at Anfield earlier that season. Our third goal, Šmicer’s first reds strike, was our hundredth in all competitions under Gérard Houllier's sole charge. Reds on the way out 2004 - Grégory Vignal completed a loan move to Spanish La Liga strugglers R.C.D. Espanyol. On the same day, Finnish reserves striker Daniel Sjölund finally signed up permanently with Swedish side Djurgårdens IF. He had arrived at Anfield from West Ham United as part of the deal that took Rigobert Song in the opposite direction in November 2000, but never managed to make a first-team appearance for the reds. On the same day, Andy Parkinson, who was in the victorious FA Youth Cup squad in 1996, joined Notts County on loan from Sheffield United, notching three times in five games in this first spell at Meadow Lane. 2009 - Darren Potter joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Other reds games 1972 – We won 3-0 at Second Division side Oxford United in the FA Cup Third Round, with Kevin Keegan scoring twice and Alec Lindsay also on target. 1949 – We triumphed 4-0 over Nottingham Forest in a replay at the same stage at Anfield. Jimmy Payne and Albert Stubbins scored, with Jack Balmer adding a brace. 1921 – Sunderland held us to a goalless draw in L4. 1914 – Keeper Ken Campbell was credited with an own goal, the only score as we lost our FA Cup First Round replay at Barnsley. In comes Cody 2023 – Dutch forward Cody Gakpo signed from PSV Eindhoven for a reported initial £40m. He settled in quickly, bagging 34 goals in 106 outings in his first two years with the reds, already helping us to claim the League Cup. Yet another win 1981 - We registered our 85th consecutive home match without defeat as we beat Alliance Premier League side Altrincham 4-1 in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield, thanks to goals from Terry McDermott, Ray Kennedy and a Kenny Dalglish brace, with shipping clerk Graham Heathcote converting a penalty for the visitors in front of the Kop. Future Academy Manager John Owens and Zak Whitbread’s dad Barry were both on the losing side while reds legend Bill Shankly bizarrely travelled to the game on the Altrincham team coach and went into the visitors’ dressing room before the game, as part of a promotional campaign for Robinson’s Barley Water that he was involved with. We lost our next home match 2-1 to Leicester City, at the end of the month, to bring the run to an end. This was the most recent day on which both the reds and Everton have played at home at the same time, with the Blues hosting Arsenal in another cup tie. Cup glory 1976 - We knocked out the FA Cup holders in a Third Round tie at Upton Park, as goals from John Toshack and Kevin Keegan handed us a 2-0 win over West Ham United. 1987 - We also beat the Hammers when Steve McMahon netted the only goal of our League match at Anfield late on. 2009 – We won 2-0 at Preston North End, with Albert Riera opening the scoring past future reds keeper Andy Lonergan before Steve Gerrard set up Fernando Torres for a last-minute tap-in to settle any nerves. Harry Oscroft struck the first two of his six goals past us, with Don Whiston also netting. 1948 - We entertained the Potters, being held to a goalless draw, when forward Jack Balmer played his 200th reds game and Scottish left-winger Doug McAvoy was making the first of just two senior reds appearances. The players were presented with their medals from the previous season’s League title-winning campaign before the match by the President of the Football League, William Cuff. 1931 - Harry Barkas made his reds debut in our 3-1 defeat of Middlesbrough at Anfield in the top flight. East Anglian joy 2005 - Steve Finnan played his 400th club career game as goals from Luis García and John Arne Riise secured a 2-1 win at Norwich City, who were relegated at the end of the season. Arthur only played four first-team games in his two spells at Anfield before the First World War, as well as twice claiming Olympic Gold medals for football. 1855 - John McKenna was born in Drumcaw, County Monaghan, Ireland. He served as a Director from the formation of the club until July 1921, having two lengthy spells as the club’s Chairman. He acted as our boss for the 1895/96 season, guiding us to the Second Division title, before being replaced by Tom Watson. He was later Chairman of the Football League for two decades. Title decider? 2019 – We lost 2-1 at Manchester City, narrowing our lead at the top of the table to four points. Sergio Agüero put the home side ahead with the last of his seven goals past us after a Sadio Mané shot was within 1.1cm of crossing the line after an attempted clearance rebounded. Roberto Firmino equalised after the break. However, Leroy Sané bagged a late winner as City went on to retain the title, the latest of his four goals against us. Roy in charge 1982 - Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of Bristol City, moving up from Assistant. He won just three of his twenty games in charge before moving to Sweden to take over at Örebro SK. 2004 – Hodgson took charge of United Arab Emirates as they were held to a goalless draw by Qatar in the Gulf Cup of Nations in Kuwait. Crazy Horse for the three 1973 - Emlyn Hughes appeared in an unofficial international as The Three beat The Six 2-0 at Wembley Stadium. This was a ‘Common Market’ match with The Three representing Denmark, the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, while The Six featured players from Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany. 1977 – Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden Under-18’s as they beat Switzerland 3-2 in a friendly in Israel. Other reds games 1989 – Ronnie Whelan headed in the only goal of Aston Villa’s visit to Anfield. 1920 – We lost 3-2 at Sheffield United, with Stan Fazackerley bagging a brace for the Blades and Harry Johnson scoring the first of his seven goals against the reds. Tom Miller scored twice for us, with his second coming from the rebound after Harold Gough had saved his spot-kick. Moving on 2007 - Former reserves right-back Stephen Vaughan joined Rochdale on loan from Chester City, although he did not make an appearance before returning to the Deva Stadium. 2013 – Keeper Jamie Stephens moved to Welsh Premier League side Airbus UK Broughton on a temporary basis, before being released by the reds in the summer. He is now with Newport County. On the same day, Stuart Webber was appointed Head of Recruitment for Wolverhampton Wanderers. He had joined the reds as Senior National Scout in 2009, moving up to become Director of Recruitment in May 2011, before leaving in the summer of 2012. 2014 – Ex-reserves forward Astrit Ajdarević joined Charlton Athletic on loan from Standard de Liège, netting twice in 22 outings for the Addicks. 2017 – Ex-reds centre-back Stephen Sama signed for German side Spielvereinigung Greuther Fürth, although he only made one League appearance, moving on to Heracles Almelo in the Netherlands in July 2018. 2018 – Midfielder Adam Phillips joined Cambridge United on loan from Norwich City, for whom he played four times. 2019 – Winger Adam Hammill joined Sc***horpe United from St. Mirren, scoring once in nineteen outings before the end of the campaign. 2020 – Midfielder Herbie Kane joined Hull City on loan, nabbing two goals in nine games for the Tigers. -
Dan the man 2013 - Daniel Sturridge signed from Chelsea for £12m. He scored an impressive 67 times in 160 reds games, although most of these came from off the bench in later years. He moved on to Trabzonspor in August 2019. Souey the skipper 1982 - Graeme Souness captained Liverpool for the first time, leading us to an impressive 4-0 win at John Toshack’s Swansea City in the Third Round of the FA Cup. Phil Thompson had been stripped of the captaincy following our Boxing Day defeat to Manchester City that left the reds twelfth in the table. Alan Hansen scored in his 200th reds game with Ian Rush bagging a brace and Mark Lawrenson also on target. On the same day, ex-red Ian Callaghan played in his 88th FA Cup game as Crewe Alexandra lost 3-1 at home to Sc***horpe United, with 79 of these games played while with Liverpool. Stevie on his way out 2015 - Steven Gerrard announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the season. He made 710 appearances for the reds in total, notching 186 goals, helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and three League Cups as well as winning the PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards once apiece. 2018 – Pepijn Lijnders left the coaching staff to take over as Manager of N.E.C. in the Netherlands. He was sacked four months later, returning to Melwood as Assistant Manager in June 2018. 1936 – Left-back Jack Tennant moved on to Bolton Wanderers. He had arrived at Anfield from Torquay United in May 1933, appearing 42 times without notching, later guesting with the reds during the war. Swapping right backs 2006 - Josemi joined Villarreal in exchange for Jan Kromkamp. Josemi was Rafael Benítez’s first signing, joining us from Málaga for £2m in July 2004, but made just 35 reds appearances. Kromkamp only stayed with the club for eight months, playing eighteen times, including a substitute appearance as we won the FA Cup later that year. Jürgen Klopp and Alisson Becker both missed the game due to suspected positive COVID tests. Running down the wing 1981 – Argentine winger Maxi Rodríguez was born in Rosario, Santa Fe. He bagged seventeen goals in 73 reds outings after signing for free from Club Atlético de Madrid in January 2010, returning to his native land to re-join Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys in July 2012. Also in the Cup 1971 - We beat Aldershot 1-0 in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield, who were then 92nd in the League and managed by ex-red Jimmy Melia, with John McLaughlin grabbing the only goal, his last for the reds. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Came off the bench to net his eighteenth and final goal for the club shortly after the break, but Bryan Mbeumo completed the scoring late on. Also recently 2020 – We beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Anfield to maintain a thirteen-point lead at the top of the table, with Mohamed Salah on target early on. Sadio Mané scored after the break to ensure we went a full year unbeaten in the Premier League. On the same day, Alisson Becker was named as the winner of the Samba d'Or for 2019, given to the best Brazilian playing in Europe, the first keeper to win this award. 2017 – We drew 2-2 at Sunderland as we took the lead twice through Daniel Sturridge and Sadio Mané, but Jermain Defoe levelled twice from the spot, the last of his six strikes past us. 2016 – We lost 2-0 at West Ham United, thanks to headed goals from Michail Antonio, one of his six past us, and ex-red Andy Carroll. 2008 - We succumbed to a late Titus Bramble strike as Wigan Athletic scored their first ever League goal against us to secure their first point against any of the ‘big four’ in 21 attempts, cancelling out a Fernando Torres effort, his sixteenth goal of the season. This was the sixth time that Steve Bruce had led a side against us in the Premier League, and he had yet to taste defeat in these fixtures. 1995 - We thumped Norwich City 4-0 at home to bring us to a maximum twelve points over the festive period, thanks to goals from Ian Rush, John Scales and a Robbie Fowler brace. On the same day, future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason played for Iceland Under-17’s as they beat the host nation 2-1 in the Israel Tournament. 1996 – Guðnason played for the Under-19’s as they lost 5-1 to Hungary in the same tournament. 2006 - We drew 2-2 with Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium, failing to equal a club record eleven consecutive League victories. Kewley’s moment in the spotlight 1978 - Local forward Kevin Kewley made his one and only appearance in the reds first team when he came on as a substitute for Terry McDermott in our 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough. Goals from David Johnson and Steve Heighway secured the points for the reds. Kewley’s senior Anfield career must rank as one of the shortest ever, as he left the club the following month to join Dallas Tornado in the USA. 1939 - We also faced Boro, going down 3-0 at Ayresome Park with left-back Keith Peters playing his only reds game. Micky Fenton netted two of his nine goals against the reds, with Jackie Milne also on target. Kenny later signed Moran when he was Manager at Blackburn Rovers. Shanks’ first 1960 - Jimmy Melia nabbed the only goal of our Second Division fixture at Hull City to secure Bill Shankly’s first away win as Manager. Cameron’s last 1893 – Forward Jonathan Cameron scored his fifth and final reds goal in our 4-1 win at Fairfield in the Lancashire League. Hugh McQueen, John Miller and Tom Wyllie were all also on target. Mixed fortunes against the Mackems 2013 – We beat Sunderland 3-0 at Anfield, with Luis Suárez setting up Raheem Sterling who lobbed Simon Mignolet to open the scoring before the Uruguayan bagged himself a brace. 1911 – We were thumped 4-0 at Roker Park, with Jackie Mordue netting one of his six goals against the reds, Tim Coleman nabbing one of his nine past us and George Holley and John Cowell also on the scoresheet. Passing on 1949 - Right-half Jock McNab died in Bootle. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting six times in 222 reds games, having signed from Bellshill Athletic in November 1919. 1995 – Midfielder Ian Frodsham died from a spinal tumour, aged just nineteen. He had joined as an Under-11, turning professional when he was seventeen. An indoor arena at the Academy in Kirkby was named in his honour, as well as an award for the young player of the year. Two ton Maurice 1909 – We went down 3-0 at Chelsea. Jimmy Windridge scored before George Hilsdon scored one of his five goals past us from the spot. Fred Rouse was also on target for the Blues as right-half Maurice Parry played his 200th League game for the reds. Twice against the Geordies and Blades 1922 - We drew 1-1 at Newcastle United, with Dick Forshaw on the scoresheet early on. 1932 - Harold Barton struck twice as we won 4-2 in L4, with Gordon’s Gunson and Hodgson also on target. 1899 - We won 2-0 at Bramall Lane thanks to goals from Johnny Walker and Jack Cox. 1897 - Sheffield United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield, just twenty-four hours after we had won 4-1 at Bolton Wanderers. No longer the boss 1954 - Bill Shankly resigned as Manager of Grimsby Town. They had finished second in the Third Division North in his first season in charge, but he could not match that in either of the subsequent two campaigns, leading them to victory in 62 of his 118 League games. 2001 - John Toshack resigned as Manager of Saint-Étienne to take over at Real Sociedad for the third time. He had been in charge at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard for just two months. On the move 2007 - Young defender James Smith joined Ross County on loan. He only made one senior appearance for the reds, in our Carling Cup win over Reading at Anfield in October 2006. 2009 – Left-back Robbie Threlfall joined League One Stockport County on loan. He only played twice before returning to Anfield. 2014 – Ex-youth team keeper Ian Dunbavin joined Chesterfield on loan from Accrington Stanley. On the same day, centre-forward Adam Morgan signed for Yeovil Town on a free transfer, scoring just once in nineteen games for the Glovers before joining Accrington Stanley in June 2015. 2017 – Ex-reds forward Ryan Babel signed for Turkish side Beşiktaş JK, netting 29 times in 86 outings before moving to Fulham two years later. On the same day, centre-back Ben Davies joined Fleetwood Town on loan from Preston North End, netting once in 26 outings. 2020 – Ex-reds midfielder Adam Phillips joined Morecambe on loan from Burnley, netting four times in eleven outings in this first spell with the Shrimps. On the same day, keeper Lawrence Vigouroux signed for Leyton Orient on an eighteen-month deal. Fallen idols 2001 - Robbie Fowler was attacked while out on the town for the evening. The club said, “Although the player’s injuries are not serious, Robbie is obviously upset and shocked.” 1904 – We hosted Nottingham Forest in a top-flight fixture that ended goalless. Forward Sam Raybould played his first game after a seven-month ban for agreeing a move to Southern League side Portsmouth that was deemed illegal by the Football League. Other reds games 2010 – We drew an FA Cup Third Round tie 1-1 at Reading, with Steven Gerrard equalising after Simon Church had given the Royals the lead. However, we crashed out in the Anfield replay. 1965 – We won 3-2 at Blackpool with the home side taking a two-goal half-time lead through a brace from Ray Charnley, two of his seven goals against the reds. Roger Hunt struck twice before Ian St. John headed in the winner. 1937 – Charlton Athletic won 2-1 at Anfield, with Fred Howe netting our goal. 1928 – Burnley held us to a 2-2 draw in L4 with Dick Edmed opening the scoring. Louis Page scored two of his seven goals past us, with Tommy Reid netting our equaliser. 1926 – Leicester City won 3-0 at Anfield, with Arthur Lochhead bagging the first of his five goals past us and Hugh Adcock also netting one of his five before the break. Arthur Chandler then nabbed one of his six strikes against the reds. 1915 – We lost 3-1 at Notts County, with Tom Miller opening the scoring for the reds on the stroke of half time. Jack Peart struck the last of his four goals against us before Sam Richards and George Dale scored late on. The Doc is in 1976 – Ex-Blues forward David Johnson signed from Ipswich Town for a club record £200,000. He went on to win three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields, scoring 78 times in 213 reds games. He was the first player to score for both sides in Merseyside derbies, and returned to Goodison in August 1982 for £100,000. Most recently 2018 – Three reds made their debuts as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 in our season opener at Anfield – keeper Alisson Becker, Naby Keïta and Xherdan Shaqiri. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring, with Sadio Mané bagging a brace and Daniel Sturridge completing the scoring. This secured our 500th Premier League victory. In comes José 2011 – Left-back José Enrique signed from Newcastle United for £5.5m. He impressed reds fans in his early appearances, netting twice in 99 games in all and helping us to claim the Carling Cup and reach the FA Cup Final in his first campaign, before being released in May 2016. 2019 - Andy Lonergan joined the reds, having been released by Middlesbrough earlier in the summer. The reds became the twelfth club of his professional career, but he failed to make the first team, although he sat on the bench on eight occasions, including nights when we claimed the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. 2022 – Leeds-born forward Oakley Cannonier signed a new contract with the reds, having joined the reds at Under-12’s level and turning pro in July 2021. His most significant impact to date has been as the ball-boy who quickly handed the ball to Trent Alexander-Arnold for his “corner taken quickly” against Barcelona in our UEFA Champions League Semi-final second leg in May 2019. Joyeux anniversaire 1981 - Our former record £14m signing Djibril Cissé was born in Arles in France. His first season was one of tremendous ups and downs, including a horrific leg break and converting a penalty in the Champions League Final. He notched a total of 24 times in 79 reds games, including scoring in the UEFA Super Cup Final and FA Cup Final, but then spent a season on loan at Olympique de Marseille, for whom he signed permanently for £6.3m in July 2007. 1990 – Mario Balotelli was born in Palermo. The Italian striker signed from AC Milan for £16m in August 2014, only scoring four times in 28 games in his one season at Anfield, spending s campaign back on loan at AC Milan before joining Nice on a fee transfer in August 2016. 2010 - He joined Manchester City from Internazionale for €21.8m after 28 goals in 86 games for the nerazzurri. 1948 – Former first-team coach Patrice Bergues was born in Créteil, France. He worked with Gérard Houllier at Anfield between 1998 and 2001, later working with him at Olympique Lyonnais. 1997 – Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi was born in Ilorin. He signed from Imperial Academy for £400,000 in August 2015, spending most of his time since out on loan before being sold to Union Berlin for £6.5m in July 2021. Joy in Charity We have twice claimed the FA Charity Shield on this day over the years. 1989 - Glenn Hysén made his reds debut as Peter Beardsley scored the only goal of the game against Arsenal at Wembley, in his hundredth reds match. Later, an Ian Rush header struck the post, landing in keeper John Lukic’s arms. 2001 - We made our third trip to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff inside six months, as a Gary McAllister penalty and Michael Owen strike handed us a 2-1 win over arch-rivals Manchester United. John Arne Riise made his reds bow in this game, which was the first eleven-a-side first-class match to be played indoors, as the stadium’s roof was closed against the rain. On the same day, Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his fiftieth cap for Greece, his final one as an A.E.K Athens player, as Greece lost 2-0 to Poland in Chorzów. Javier Mascherano also reached a half century of international appearances, skippering Argentina as they beat Russia 3-2 in a friendly in Moscow, with future red Maxi Rodríguez also in action. Stan’s treble 1996 - Stan Collymore bagged a hat-trick in our 4-0 victory at Burnley in a pre-season friendly. Robbie Fowler completed the scoring. Beating City We have twice beaten Manchester City at Anfield in League encounters on this day over the years. 1969 - We won 3-2 with a goal from Roger Hunt and an Ian St. John brace. Tommy Smith scored an own goal in this game with City keeper Joe Corrigan playing his first game at Anfield, with Ian Bowyer also on target for the visitors. 1972 - We triumphed 2-0, thanks to an early Brian Hall strike and a late Ian Callaghan goal. However, this game was marred by the dismissals of Larry Lloyd and City’s Wyn Davies. Lloyd later became the first player to fight a ban before the newly formed independent disciplinary tribunal, in relation to this sending off. Off the mark 2017 – Mohamed Salah scored on his reds bow as we were held to a 3-3 draw at Watford, Jürgen Klopp’s hundredth game in charge. We fell behind to a Stefano Okaka goal before Sadio Mané equalised. Abdoulaye Doucouré put the Hornets back in front, with Roberto Firmino equalising from the spot and Salah giving us the lead, which we held until a stoppage-time leveller from Miguel Britos. 2012 - Raheem Sterling scored his first reds goal as we beat Sami Hyypiä’s Bayer 04 Leverkusen 3-1 in a friendly at Anfield. Lucas and Andy Carroll were also on target. 1991 - Mark Walters made his first reds appearance, in a 1-0 friendly defeat at Tranmere Rovers. He joined from Rangers for a £1.25m fee the following day, where he had been a big success. Euro anniversary 1984 - We met Icelandic side Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur in a friendly. They were the first team we ever played in European competition, almost exactly twenty years earlier. This meeting ended 2-2, with Michael Robinson and Phil Neal on the scoresheet after we had fallen two goals behind. 1990 - We returned to that part of the world, winning 2-0 at HJK Helsinki, with Ray Houghton and David Burrows on the scoresheet. Albert Riera struck his final goal for Spain while on our books, with Fernando Torres also netting and Pepe Reina also playing as Spain beat FYR Macedonia 3-2 in Skopje. Welcome Dejan 2014 – Croatian centre-half Dejan Lovren signed from Southampton for £20m. European champions 2007 - Future red Mikel San José was on the winning side as Spain Under-19’s beat Greece 1-0 to claim the European Championships in Austria. 2010 – Dani Pacheco scored in his third consecutive game as Spain reached the Final of the same tournament by beating England 3-1 in France, with future reds Thiago Alcântara, Steven Caulker and Nathaniel Clyne all also in action. Meanwhile, his clubmate Chris Mavinga also reached the Final as France beat Croatia 2-1. For Sir John 1996 - We were beaten 2-0 at Anfield by Porto in the opening match of a friendly tournament to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Sir John Moores CBE. Reds in Europe 2022 – We lost 1-0 at Red Bull Salzburg, with Benjamin Šeško netting the goal. 2002 - German side Wolfsburg held us to a 1-1 draw in Austria. New signing El-Hadji Diouf scored for the second successive match, on consecutive days. 1998 - Karl-Heinz Riedle was on target as we drew 1-1 at Danish side Randers Freja in a pre-season friendly. More departures 1896 – Director John McKenna resigned as Secretary, having been in charge for 36 games as we claimed the Second Division title. He then confined himself to board duties until July 1921, having two lengthy spells as the club’s Chairman.
