We always win in Wales 2003 - Goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen handed us a 2-0 win over Manchester United as we won the Worthington Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium, to claim our seventh League Cup with Jerzy Dudek being named man of the match. John Arne Riise was playing in his hundredth reds game, while Milan Baroš suffered the rare indignity of coming on from the bench and then later himself being substituted. Happy birthdays 1924 - Centre-half Laurie Hughes was born in Liverpool, just off Everton Road. He signed from Tranmere Rovers in February 1943 and made 326 reds appearances, netting just once. He helped us to the first post-war League title and the FA Cup Final three years later and was the first red to appear in the World Cup Finals later that year. 1994 - Lazar Marković was born in Čačak, Serbia. He signed from SL Benfica for £20m in July 2014, netting three times in 34 games before moving to Fulham on a free transfer in January 2019 after a series of loan spells away from Anfield. 1955 - Forward Kevin Kewley was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in March 1972 but only ever made one senior appearance for the reds, as a substitute for Terry McDermott against Middlesbrough at Anfield in February 1978. He was sold to Dallas Tornado for £18,000 on his 23rd birthday, playing there for five years before moving to indoor side Wichita Wings. He retired from playing in 1990 and was last heard of coaching youth soccer and working in Wichita, Kansas. 1892 - Full-back William Jenkinson was born in Golborne, Lancashire. He signed from South Liverpool in 1916 but only played thirteen times before moving to Wigan Borough in June 1921. 1989 – Ex-reserves midfielder Ray Putterill was born in Liverpool. He starred in the victorious 2007 FA Youth Cup campaign and started training at Melwood later that summer. He scored on his first appearance for the senior side, in a 3-0 friendly win at Crewe Alexandra in August 2007, and featured on the bench in our Carling Cup tie at Reading a month later. He was released in the summer of 2009. Luis at the treble 2013 – Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick in our 4-0 win at Wigan Athletic to take him past twenty League goals for the season, after Stewart Downing had headed in an early opener. Most recently 2022 – We beat Norwich City 2-1 in the FA Cup Fifth Round at Anfield on our way to claiming the trophy for the eighth time. Takumi Minamino struck twice in the first half. To and fro with the Toffees 1934 – Forward Tosh Johnson signed from Everton, with whom he had won the League and FA Cup. However, he was past his best by the time he arrived at Anfield. He played 38 times for us, notching eight times before joining Darwen in August 1936. 1927 – Inside-left Dick Forshaw was sold to Everton for £3,750. He won two League titles after joining the reds in July 1919, scoring an impressive 124 times in 288 games. He has the unique honour of being the only player ever to claim League championship medals with both Merseyside clubs, helping the Blues to the title in his first full season across the park. 1922 – Welsh forward Billy Matthews moved on to Bristol City. After eight goals in thirteen Wartime reds games, he signed on from Colwyn Bay in 1918, netting four times in nine senior outings. A Fab strike 2008 - Fábio Aurélio scored his first reds goal as we won 3-1 at Bolton Wanderers. We opened the scoring when keeper Jussi Jääskeläinen spilled a Steven Gerrard shot that was heading wide and knocked it into his own net. Ryan Babel also got on the scoresheet as he completed his first full ninety minutes in the League, while Avi Cohen’s son Tamir scored for the Trotters. Red centurions 2016 – Keeper Simon Mignolet played his hundredth League game for the reds as we gained some revenge for our League Cup Final defeat three days earlier by beating Manchester City 3-0 at Anfield. Adam Lallana and James Milner scored in the first half, with Roberto Firmino on target after the break. 1907 – We lost a top-flight encounter 1-0 at Manchester City’s old Hyde Road ground, with Ned Doig saving a penalty from George Dorsett. 1968 - Tommy Smith made his 150th consecutive reds appearance, in a 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Roger Hunt bagged our goal, with Derek Dougan netting one of his four against the reds. 1985 – John Wark netted the only goal of Nottingham Forest’s visit to Anfield from the spot as Ian Rush played his 200th game for the club. Back to the Cottage 2002 - We beat Fulham 2-0 in what was billed as our last ever match at Craven Cottage, thanks to goals from Nicolas Anelka and Jari Litmanen. The game will also be remembered for a stunning last-ditch tackle from Stéphane Henchoz to deny Steve Marlet a goal. Stephen Wright played his 21st and final senior reds game that day. 1957 - We also won there in a Second Division match, with John Evans bagging his 53rd and final reds goal and Billy Liddell also on target in our 2-1 victory. Elton John’s cousin Roy Dwight scored the last of his four goals against us. Anfield trebles 1898 - Derby County trounced us 5-1 at Anfield in an FA Cup Third Round replay, with three from John Boag, one of only two FA Cup hat-tricks we have conceded and the first of his six strikes past ud. Frank Becton bagged our consolation from the spot as forwards Dan Cunliffe and Abe Hartley, and centre-half Joe McQue all played their final reds games. Steve Bloomer bagged two of his fourteen goals against us. 1895 – We won in the League by the same score in L4 when Jimmy Ross nabbed a brace and Davy Hannah, Harry Bradshaw and Neil Kerr were also on the scoresheet, with this being Kerr’s third and final goal for the reds. 1932 - A more welcome hat-trick was scored by Gordon Hodgson, one of his seventeen for the club, in a 4-1 home League win over West Bromwich Albion, when Gordon Gunson also netted. Billy ‘Ginger’ Richardson bagged the first of his nine strikes against the reds. Beginnings and ends 1986 - We won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur live on TV with Steve Perryman playing his final Spurs game, his 655th in the League. Ian Rush bagged his twentieth goal of the season in the final minute, with Jan Mølby also netting past ex-red Ray Clemence after Chris Waddle had given the home side an early lead. 1935 – Forward Sam English netted his 26th and final reds goal as we lost 3-2 at Grimsby Town in the top flight with Gordon Hodgson also on target. Pat Glover struck twice for the Mariners, with Ben Burley also on target. 1913 - Scottish centre-half Robert Neill died. He stood at only five foot four inches but won five full international caps. He signed from Hibernian in May 1896 after a loan spell, netting three times in 27 reds games before joining Rangers in April 1897, with whom he won the League and Cup. 1912 - Forward Billy Lacey made his reds bow in a 1-1 League draw at home to Middlesbrough, with Tom Miller grabbing our goal, his first of 56 for the club. European Cup defeats 1977 - We lost 1-0 at Saint-Étienne in the Third Round first leg, but of course famously fought back to qualify for the Semi-finals in the Anfield return. Dominique Bathenay volleyed the only goal of the game, after Steve Heighway had hit the post at the other end. 1983 - We were less fortunate, losing 2-0 at Widzew Lódz at the same stage before only winning 3-2 at Anfield. Bruce Grobbelaar was culpable for the first goal as he dropped a cross. International firsts 1889 - Anfield hosted its first ever international as England trounced Ireland 6-1 in the British International Championships. 1960 - Future red Ian St. John bagged a brace on his debut for Scotland Under-23’s as they drew 4-4 with England at Ibrox. Jimmy Greaves netted a treble for the English. 2010 – Robbie Keane won his first cap while on loan with Celtic as the Republic of Ireland lost 2-0 to Brazil at the Emirates Stadium. Mario Balotelli won his sixteenth and last cap while playing alongside fellow future red Fabio Borini for Italy Under-21’s in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Péter Gulácsi’s Hungary. David N’Gog, future red Mamadou Sakho and ex-red Mikel San José also featured for the Under-21’s on the same day, with Chris Mavinga playing for France Under-19’s. 2012 – Mohamed Salah played in Egypt’s goalless friendly draw with DR Congo in Qatar. 1901 - Right-half Maurice Parry became our first Welsh international, in their 1-1 draw with Scotland in Wrexham, with ex-reds half-back Barney Battles appearing for the Scots. 1903 - Parry won his seventh cap in their 2-1 defeat by England in Portsmouth, again in the British International Championships. On the move 1998 - Nigel Spackman resigned as Manager of Sheffield United after seven months in charge, following the sale of several players for financial reasons. 1995 - David Burrows signed for Coventry City from Everton for £1.1m. He played 130 times as the Sky Blues held their own in the top flight. 2000 - Reserves striker Jon Newby joined Crewe Alexandra on loan. He failed to score in six first-team appearances. 2012 – Defender Stephen Wright signed for Wrexham, notching once in 39 outings before moving on to Welsh Premier League side Aberystwyth Town in September 2014. 2020 - Daniel Sturridge received a four-month worldwide ban for breaching betting rules, having his contract with Trabzonspor terminated by mutual consent on the same day. Meanwhile, Academy coach Neil Critchley was appointed Manager of Blackpool. Other reds games 1997 – We lost 1-0 to Aston Villa at a muddy Villa Park thanks to a late Ian Taylor strike. 1985 – John Wark netted the only goal of Nottingham Forest’s visit to Anfield from the spot. 1974 – John Toshack was on target late on as we beat Burnley 1-0 in L4. 1963 – We lost 2-0 at home to Leicester City. 1901 – Charlie Satterthwaite and Sam Raybould struck as we drew 2-2 at Preston North End, with ex-red Frank Becton on target twice for the home side. Also in international action 2014 – Future red Joe Gomez captained England Under-17’s as they lost 1-0 to Germany in the Algarve Tournament, with Sheyi Ojo also in action.

Gunners silenced 2014 - We blitzed Arsenal in the opening twenty minutes at Anfield, racing into a four-goal lead as we eventually beat the League leaders 5-1. Martin Škrtel and Raheem Sterling each bagged a brace with Daniel Sturridge also on target. When Steven Gerrard was substituted late on, the captain’s armband passed to Luis Suárez, who in turn handed it to Martin Škrtel when he himself was substituted ten minutes later. Ex-Blue Mikel Arteta bagged the Gunners’ consolation from the spot. Have a Wright good day 1980 - Former reds right-back Stephen Wright was born in Bootle. He signed on as a pro in July 1996, netting once in 21 reds appearances before moving to Sunderland for £3m in August 2002, for whom he turned out on 105 occasions. 1872 – Forward Abe Hartley was born in Dumbarton. He signed from Everton for £175 in December 1897, but only notched once in twelve outings before joining Southern League side Southampton the following May. On our way to a treble 1983 - Goals from Graeme Souness, David Hodgson and a Phil Neal penalty gave us a 3-0 Semi-final first-leg lead over Burnley on our way to a third consecutive League Cup triumph. Kolo the champion 2015 – Kolo Touré converted during the penalty shoot-out that decided the African Cup of Nations Final in Equatorial Guinea, after Ivory Coast’s match against Ghana ended goalless after extra time. This was the first time they claimed the trophy since 1992, with Touré winning his 120th and final cap for his country. 2012 – Touré played as his country beat Mali 1-0 in their Semi-final in Gabon, going on to lose the Final to Zambia on penalties. 2004 – Ex-red Rigobert Song captained Cameroon as they lost 2-1 to Nigeria in a Quarter-final in Tunisia. 1998 – Future red Titi Camara skippered Guinea in their 1-0 group stage defeat of Algeria in Burkina Faso. Meanwhile, future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played as Brazil beat El Salvador 4-0 in a CONCACAF Gold Cup group game in Los Angeles. Another stalemate 2003 - We suffered our fifth straight home League draw, after Geremi’s free-kick gave Middlesbrough the lead with their only first-half attempt on goal. It was their first away League goal for more than thirteen hours. John Arne Riise grabbed a late equaliser after Michael Owen’s mazy run through the penalty area. Bobby off the mark 1958 - We beat Charlton Athletic 3-1 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield. Geoff Twentyman and Billy Liddell struck before Bobby Murdoch bagged his first reds goal. 2006 - We also faced the Addicks, going down 2-0 at The Valley to succumb to our third defeat in four League games, and ninth straight loss in London. Darren Bent converted a soft spot-kick, the first of his five goals past us to date, with Luke Young doubling the home side’s lead in first-half stoppage time. FA Cup memories We have had mixed fortunes in the FA Cup on this day over the years. 1902 - We were knocked out by non-League opposition for the first time, as reigning Southern League champions Southampton won 4-1 in the Second Round, with left-half George Fleming bagging our consolation at The Dell, the first of his six reds strikes. He made just two starts for the Addicks, and another ten appearances from off the bench, before retiring at the end of the season. 1989 - He scored in England’s 2-1 friendly win in Greece. Fellow red Peter Beardsley also played. Meanwhile, Steve Nicol appeared for Scotland on the same day, as they lost a World Cup qualifier 3-2 in Cyprus. Thumping the Tractor boys 1975 - John Toshack nabbed a brace while Brian Hall, Alec Lindsay and Peter Cormack all struck as we beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Anfield. Trevor Whymark scored one of his six goals past us, with Thomas Beattie also on the scoresheet. Wearside despair We have twice faced Sunderland in First Division matches on this day in history, losing both games without finding the net. 1908 - We lost 1-0 at Roker Park with centre-half James Gorman playing his 23rd and last reds game and keeper Sam Hardy reaching a century of appearances for the club. George Bridgett netted his fifth and final goal against the reds in the last minute. 1936 - We went down 3-0 at Anfield as Bobby Gurney struck two of his sixteen goals past us, with Pat Gallacher nabbing one of his six. First caps for the youngsters 2005 - Scott Carson won his first cap for England Under-21’s as a red, and ninth to date, as they lost 2-0 to the Netherlands in a friendly at Pride Park, with John Welsh and future red James Milner also appearing. Future reds Head of Physical Performance Dr. Conall Murtagh played for Northern Ireland Under-21’s for the only time in their 2-1 friendly defeat of Scotland in Belfast. Meanwhile, ex-red Jari Litmanen won his first cap as a Hansa Rostock player, and 94th in all, skippering Finland as they beat Latvia 2-1 in the Semi-final of the Cyprus Tournament. Sami Hyypiä also played, while David Raven, Darren Potter and future reds Ramon Calliste and Kolo Touré all also featured for their countries. 2006 - Young reds keeper Paul Willis made his debut for Northern Ireland Under-21’s, conceding and then saving a penalty as they beat Israel 1-0 in a friendly in Nazareth. 1999 – Frode Kippe won his first cap for Norway Under-21’s as a reds player with Riise making his bow at this level in their 2-0 tournament defeat of Finland in Spain. 1997 – John Arne Riise made his debut for Norway Under-16’s in their 3-0 defeat by Spain in the Algarve Tournament. Other first caps 2011 – Conor Coady skippered an England Under-19’s side that included his clubmates Tom Ince and Jack Robinson, with all three making their debut at this level as they lost 1-0 to Germany in Chesterfield. On the same day, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made his Under-21’s debut, winning his only cap while with Southampton in their 1-0 friendly defeat by Italy in Empoli. Future reds Thiago Alcântara and Kolo Touré also played for their countries that day. 1989 - Dean Saunders won his first cap as a Derby County player, and twelfth in total, as Wales drew 3-3 with Israel in a friendly in Tel Aviv. Future reds player Ronnie Rosenthal and Assistant Manager Colin Pascoe also featured. 2007 - Milan Baroš won his first cap while with Olympique Lyonnais as the Czech Republic beat Belgium 2-0 in a friendly in Brussels. On the same day, Djibril Cissé won his first cap while on loan at Olympique de Marseille as France were beaten 1-0 by Argentina at the Stade de France, with ex-red Nicolas Anelka also featuring. Also in friendly action that day were Mark González, Dirk Kuyt and John Arne Riise, with Ryan Babel nabbing his final goal while with Ajax. Signing on 2013 – Defender Martin Kelly signed a new contract with the reds. He suffered badly with injuries during his career at Anfield, notching once in 62 senior outings before being sold to Crystal Palace in August 2014 for a reported £2m. 1928 – Scottish international right-half Tom Morrison joined the reds from St. Mirren for £4,000. He struck four times in 254 reds games, moving on to Sunderland in November 1935. More youngsters in action 2005 – Future red Alberto Aquilani struck for Italy Under-21’s as they beat Russia 2-1. On the same day, future red Daniel Agger featured as Denmark Under-21’s won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Greece. 1961 - Gerry Byrne won his only England Under-23’s cap as they beat Wales 2-0 at Goodison Park. 2009 – Skipper Emiliano Insúa was sent off as Argentina lost 1-0 to Colombia in the final phase of the Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” tournament in Venezuela. Ronald Huth featured for Paraguay as they beat Brazil in the same competition that day. 2018 – Future red Ki-Jana Hoever played as the Netherlands beat Germany on penalties after their friendly with Germany ended 2-2 in Portugal. 2022 – Future red Ben Doak skippered Scotland Under-17’s in their 3-0 friendly defeat by England in Edinburgh. Jessie passes on 2012 - Bob Paisley’s widow Jessie died, aged 96. Out on loan 1995 - Paul Stewart joined First Division Burnley on loan. He made six appearances for the Clarets as they headed towards relegation. On the same day, future red Øyvind Leonhardsen played in Norway’s 2-0 friendly win in Cyprus. 1985 - Mike Hooper temporarily joined basement side Wrexham from his hometown club Bristol City. He played twenty times before signing permanently that July. 2000 - Reserves defender Neil Murphy joined Luton Town on loan. He spent a month at Kenilworth Road before returning to Anfield, although he was released at the end of the season, joining Steve McMahon’s Blackpool on a free transfer. Also on the move 2008 - Ex-reds reserves right-back Stephen Vaughan re-signed for Chester City from Boston United. 1905 – Ex-red inside-forward Tommy Green joined Middlesbrough from Stockport County for £300, having scored sixteen goals in 23 Midland League games during 1904/05, then notching twelve times in 61 Second Division appearances for the Hatters. 2017 - Markus Breglec was appointed as Director of Marketing and Media for the reds. Other reds games 1992 – We drew 0-0 at Coventry City. 1930 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Leicester City, with Gordon Hodgson on target. Arthur Lochhead scored one of his five goals past us. Also in international action 1941 – Ex-red Alf Hanson played for England as they lost 3-2 to Scotland in a Wartime International at St. James’ Park. 1947 – Future red Sammy Smyth played for Ireland in their 3-1 defeat by England in an amateur international. 1978 – Future red Avi Cohen played as Israel beat Denmark 2-0 in a friendly in Jaffa. 2017 – Midfielder Allan won his seventh and last cap for Brazil Under-20’s as they drew 2-2 with Argentina in a South American Championships final stage game in Ecuador. On the same day, Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-18’s as they drew 1-1 with Italy in a friendly in Clairefontaine-en-Yvelines. Banned 2017 – Ex-reds reserves keeper Dean Bouzanis was banned for five games for seemingly calling Melbourne Victory’s Kosovan-Albanian player Besart Berisha a gypsy while playing for Melbourne City.

Michael the centurion 2001 - Michael Owen scored his hundredth reds goal after Trevor Sinclair had given West Ham United the lead, as we drew 1-1 at Upton Park. This was our 200th League goal under Gérard Houllier's sole charge. 1923 - We also faced the Hammers when Jimmy Walsh struck twice in a 2-0 win at Anfield. Red debutants 1984 - Kevin MacDonald made his reds bow as we beat Luton Town 1-0 at home, with John Wark on target. 2013 – Aussie left-back Brad Smith came off the bench to make his debut as we lost 2-1 at Chelsea with Martin Škrtel handing us an early lead. This was the first time we had lost consecutive League games under Brendan Rodgers, with Luis Suárez denied a strong late penalty claim. Eden Hazard scored one of his seven goals past us to date, with Samuel Eto’o also on target. Bobby again 2018 – Roberto Firmino scored his first career hat-trick as we thumped Arsenal 5-1 to secure our eighth consecutive win, and tenth in a row in the League. Ainsley Maitland-Niles put the Gunners ahead early, but Firmino quickly put us in front before Sadio Mané extended the lead. Mohamed Salah scored from the spot in first-half injury time. Firmino completed his treble by converting a penalty after the break. Milestone games 2019 – Virgil van Dijk reached a century of reds games as we beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Anfield with Sadio Mané on target before the break after a lengthy VAR review for a potential handball by Adam Lallana. The visitors then had a goal ruled out for a marginal offside on the stroke of half time as we ended the year with a thirteen-point lead at the top of the table. 2009 - Fernando Torres struck the only goal of our game at Aston Villa in injury time, his fiftieth League goal, in his 72nd game, a new club record. 1934 - Berry Nieuwenhuys and Sam English were on the scoresheet as we won 2-0 at Blackburn Rovers, with keeper Arthur Riley appearing for the 200th time. 1900 - We also visited Ewood Park, with Sam Raybould netting as we lost 3-1. Jack Dewhurst netted the first two of his five goals past us, with Walter Whittaker scoring the first of his six against the reds. Gunning for a draw 2002 - A Danny Murphy penalty gave us the lead at Highbury. However, a controversial penalty won by Francis Jeffers and converted by Thierry Henry for one of his nine goals past us enabled Arsenal to share the points. Going top 1996 - We won 1-0 at Graeme Souness’s Southampton to go top of the League in time for the New Year. Dave Beasant attempted to prevent a corner, but his errant clearance was seized upon by John Barnes who sent it towards goal. Beasant attempted to get back to retrieve the situation but failed. Unfortunately, we ended up finishing fourth in a ‘two horse race’ that season. Gordon’s milestone strike 1928 – The second of Gordon Hodgson’s brace in our top-flight match at Bury was our 2,000th League goal. The game ended 2-2, with outside-right Dick Edmed playing his hundredth League game for the reds. John Smith bagged the last of his seven goals against the reds, with Jack Ball also netting. More milestone games 2010 - Pepe Reina played his 200th League game for the reds as we lost 1-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield. Stephen Ward bagged the winner with ironic chants of “Hodgson for England” ringing around the Kop during the second half. 2014 – Brendan Rodgers led us to a fiftieth League win in charge as we saw off Swansea City 4-1 at Anfield. Alberto Moreno opened the scoring with Adam Lallana bagging a brace after the break, either side of a Gylfi Sigurðsson strike for the visitors, one of his five goals past us to date. The scoring was completed when ex-red Jonjo Shelvey put through his own net, his second own goal against us to date. Derby stalemate 1945 - We held the Blues to a 2-2 draw in a Wartime League match at Goodison. Kevin Baron and Billy Liddell were on the scoresheet. Baron born 1901 - Fred Baron was born in Prudhoe, Northumberland. He struck seven times in twenty games after signing from Mid-Rhondda United in February 1925, moving on to Southend United in March 1927. 1991 – Short-lived centre-half Steven Caulker was born in Feltham. He joined the reds on loan from Queens Park Rangers in January 2016, having his temporary spell at Southampton cut short to accommodate the move. He made just four reds appearances. Bert’s farewell 1971 - Bert Shelley died in Liverpool. He played 448 times for Southampton, a club record until the 1960’s. After retiring from playing, he joined George Kay’s coaching staff, following him to Anfield in August 1936. He stayed on as Trainer after Kay’s departure, working under Don Welsh and Phil Taylor until 1959 when he joined the general staff, with his duties including looking after the treatment room. International beginning and end 1951 - Ex-reds centre-half Allenby Chilton won his second and final England cap in their 2-2 friendly draw with France at Highbury. 2001 – Future red Alberto Aquilani won his first cap for Italy Under-19’s as they beat Lithuania 2-0. In and outs 1898 – Scottish half-back Barney Battles left the reds to join Celtic for a third spell. He won the title two years running in Scotland, for Hearts in 1895 and then Celtic, joining the reds for six weeks on loan at the end of the 1895/96 season where he featured in two Second Division games and three of the four Test matches as we secured promotion, for which he received a special gold medal and a cheque for a “handsome sum”. On the same day, Dani Pacheco played for Spain Under-17’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-0 in Andorra. 2012 - Ryland Morgans was appointed as Head of Fitness & Conditioning, having previously worked under Brendan Rodgers at Swansea City. 2014 - Daniel Sturridge signed a new contract, having netted 36 times in 52 reds games to date. He eventually moved on to Trabzonspor in August 2019. Happy birthday Gary Mac 1964 - Gary McAllister was born in Motherwell. He arrived on a free transfer in July 2000, proving inspirational in the run-in to the treble that season. He netted nine goals in 87 reds games before moving back to Coventry City as Player/Manager in May 2002. He returned to Anfield as a First Team Coach last summer, moving into an ambassadorial role after Brendan Rodgers was sacked. 1896 – Winger Chris Harrington was born in Edge Hill. He signed from South Liverpool in December 1920, failing to score in four senior outings, before returning to his former club the following year. A sad day 1984 - Jack Balmer died in Liverpool. He had bagged 111 goals in 309 reds games after signing from Everton in May 1935, including trebles in three consecutive matches on our way to the League title in 1947. He also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1899 - Thomas ‘Harry’ Bradshaw died of tuberculosis in Tottenham. He joined from Northwich Victoria in October 1893 and netted 51 times in 138 games for the reds, helping us to our first two Second Division titles and was the first reds player to win senior international honours. He left Anfield to join Tottenham Hotspur in May 1898. 2004 - Left-back Eddie Spicer died. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving in the Royal Marines in World War Two, going on to net twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title and featuring in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. 2013 - Forward Wayne Harrison died aged just 46 after suffering from pancreatic cancer. He signed from Oldham Athletic for £250,000 in January 1985 at the age of seventeen, then a record fee for a teenager, although he never made a senior reds appearance before having to retire due to injury in the summer of 1991, aged just 23. King Billy’s four 1954 - Billy Liddell scored four goals as we thumped Ipswich Town 6-2 at Anfield in our first season after relegation. Also on the scoresheet were Louis Bimpson and John Evans. Rushie starts out 1979 - Ian Rush signed as a professional for Chester. He bagged seventeen goals in 39 games at Sealand Road, before moving to Anfield for £300,000 the following April.
