Centre Midfield Will Keep Struggling Until A Change In Tactics
Cooger replied to Cooger's topic in Liverpool FC
That's a football. Any other questions I am happy to help. -
I don't see a better attack in the league than Coutinho, Sturridge and Suarez. Henderson is getting better all the time. Toure hasn't put a foot wrong since he joined, he's a leader and his passion is infectious. The rest of the league aren't playing well, certainly we have no one to fear. Sakho looks a monster. Mignolet is the best shot stopper in the league and it is getting us more points. We've still got Johnson and Coutinho to enhance our team - maybe Cissokho as well. Dalglish is back at the club.

Suarez loses the ball more than other players in the team. On the weekend he he had the lowest pass completion stats, he often does. He'll lose the ball when he runs at players as well. However it doesn't matter because we want Suarez taking risks, as he is our best player and one of the best match winners in the league. I am not having a go at Suarez, I'm saying ball retention is not what wins us games. Clean sheets and goals do and Suarez helps us get the latter. Someone had a go at Lucas' ball retention stats, but his stats are very good at keeping the ball. -

Something probably needs to change. I can see why the midfield two are dropping deep, as you say they probably aren't fit enough to do the high press, but the whole team need to do it, not just the CM's and it would be easier if we play in the oppositions half. Re: The line that I have put in bold. I agree that a lot of the time, games are within about 10 yards. But far too often this season we have seen a massive gap between our attack and defense, as we do like a long direct pass straight up to the strikers and if they don't hold that ball up and have possession, then those gaps do occur. I don't think Rodgers wants to play with a high defensive line. He didn't at Swansea, didn't last season or this season. But I think it would help the midfield two if we did. Agree with your last paragraph. Henderson is better at passing, I never said otherwise. But Lucas' percentage is very good in itself. If we want to have a go at people losing possession too cheaply, then Suarez is the most guilty. -
He does at times. It is something Spearing used to get caught out doing as well. I'd say it is one of his better qualities though, I am trying to be positive about the guy - I'm not his biggest fan.

I don't disagree with any of that. But it would be nice to have more control and the amount of shots the opposition are having is concerning. -

I think a change in personnel could help. Obviously Mascherano and Alonso would be great, but we'll still look open until the centre backs push up and the gap between our defense and attack is reduced. WTF? -
I said he was good in the first couple of months. He still struggled at times and got bounced off Dembele, Fellaini, Diame and any other big centre midfielders. You don't want your DM getting out muscled and that is one thing that never happens to Lucas. I like Allen, but he is a box to box midfielder. He is good at pressing, offering energy (basically a poor mans Henderson). So if he plays that should be his role.
-
Hamann wasn't mobile, never stopped him. Lucas is not the liability people are making out, he is right up at the top of the stats in the league for breaking up play - he's much better than Allen as a DM. If Allen plays, then Henderson could be the holding player and then I could see the argument for leaving out Lucas. But I'd never have Allen over Lucas as a DM. Actually I'd have all of Lucas, Henderson and Gerrard over Allen in that role. He might be mobile, but he is far too weak. Allen has done nothing since the first couple of months last season to be selected over Henderson, absolutely nothing. Got to pick on form and Henderson is one of the first names on the team for me.

I'd like to see us have Henderson, Lucas and Gerrard in midfield. Would play a diamond when everyone is back fit. -----------------------------------------Mignolet----------------------------------------------- Johnson----------------Toure----------------------Sakho----------------------Enrique -------------------------------------------Lucas------------------------------------------------ ---------------------Henderson--------------------------Gerrard--------------------------- ------------------------------------------Coutinho---------------------------------------------- --------------------------Suarez------------------------Sturridge-----------------------------

You say that but Alonso and Mascherano would never get many goals, hardly any in fact. They'd have Gerrard in front of them getting goals, I think Coutinho should be able to do that job. The centre midfielders job is to control matches, not get goals. Even saying that Gerrard got 8 league goals and 8 assists last season. Henderson got 5 goals and 4 assists in the league last season and only started 16 matches. -

They were and they weren't. Palace still got behind both of them a few times and had a few chances to score in that first half due to the side being far too open. Henderson gives us more energy, but Lucas and Gerrard give us other attributes as well. As I say ideally we'd have all three in CM. Don't see how that affects our CM. Please explain?! But isn't that the point - if Henderson, Gerrard or Lucas (whichever two are selected) sit deep then we can't press as a team and invite pressure. Don't see how you say Lucas doesn't retain possession very well as it shows in the opening post: - Gerrard: 85.5% (376 of 440 completed) - Lucas: 89.3% (316 of 354 completed) - Henderson: 85.8% (290 of 338 completed) (Source – Whoscored.com) I thought I asked very nicely! Yeah I only posted the link because it wouldn't let me show all the pictures. Must be a limit. -

It isn't no. The article says that the centre defense are too deep and that is the main problem. Although obviously keeping the ball better will help. -
Great to see Dalglish have a role back at the club. Fair play to FSG and Rodgers for allowing that. Dalglish should be here, he's arguably our greatest players, was a great manager and bleeds LFC. He's a hero, he knows the club and he'll always have something to offer.

Thought Henderson did really well on the weekend. Was probably my man of the match.

Yeah I don't think there is much in it. Both good defenders, neither are great. Rate Toure higher than both of them and I'm hoping Sakho can be a left footed version of Toure, if he is then Agger needs to watch out.
-
You mean from crosses? The GK, RB and CB's should be dealing with them then. A full back isn't going to be able to block all crosses into the box. Of course he's barking up the wrong tree! But people are trying desperately to blame Enrique for some goals because they can't think of any other examples to back up their flawed point.
-
I wouldn't say Agger is any better than Skrtel personally.
-
I agree.
-
Henderson made us a better side last season, shame he wasn't used enough.
-
Pre season he was poor, but we don't judge pre season and he might be one of those players who needs a good pre season to get fit. But last season he was boss as I said he was hardly at fault for any of our goals we conceded. This season we've had 3 clean sheets and he got an assist vs Villa. He's probably the most underrated player at the club amongst our fans. He also wasn't poor vs United, he had a few missed passes and dribbled the ball out of the box once when he shouldn't have, otherwise he coped with everything defensively, which was tough given Coutinho and Sterling both gave him little cover (unlike Johnson who had immense cover with Henderson) and Valencia was constantly overlapping. Agger and Johnson are both weaker links and significantly so. Still waiting for these examples where Enrique cost us goals since Rodgers has been here... there is a perception that Enrique is the weak link in the back four, but it is actually b******s. He was our best defender last season and we've had 3 clean sheets so far this season, so he must have done something right in those games as well - unlike Agger who gave a penalty away vs Stoke, for example. Of course he is, anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded.
-
Yeah that's the way I'd go as well.

Moving Sturridge from the central role would be crazy.
