Finnan had a s***e first season, there were signs of improvement but he wasn't even close to the model of consistency he was under Rafa. And going from Josemi to Arbeloa was an improvement. We have spent bugger all. You think if we'd sign a big name player for right back his signing on fee wouldn't have eclipsed those fees for all three? Also, even though I'm not sure what difference it makes to you how much they get paid given we have a wage structure, do you not question the availability of these players? Who is this mythical big name we were supposed to sign? Or were we supposed to sign an unknown gem for peanuts and turn him into a world star? In which case, shouldn't Rafa be given some credit for acknowledging that what we have weren't even close to hidden gems, despite their promise? We don't have a Wes Brown or a John O'Shea coming through, players who can do a decent job there, saving us the £3m or whatever. We have to spend money on the squad, unless somehow you think we can afford two world class players in every position, starting from scratch?

I know it was sarcastic, I usually just ignore tripe like "don't buy reserves and save the money". But then I thought about it and realised that honestly we improved steadily in that position by spending bugger all.

Why should we have? The first two seasons Benitez was here saw major rebuilding. Last season we maybe should have challenged but given the injuries we suffered it's understandable, though not an excuse. Alright, and? We haven't won the title in 18 years. Benitez has been here for 4 of them. He's hardly a huge reason why they've been able to accelerate towards our record. Why? Because United might equal our record? Are you willing to risk another 5 or 10 years without challenging just because Benitez probably won't do it next season? You'd prefer to rip up the long term plan, to discard yet another generation of youngsters due to a new manager's philosophy differing to the one we have now? People moan at Arsene Wenger for his stubborn refusal to invest in the squad, for his lack of tactical versatility and his undying commitment to buying younger players with little or no experience. These players then get the experience and then leave. The cycle repeats. Benitez does invest in the squad, he has massive tactical versaility and he'll buy players as he sees fit for the squad. He's not perfect and neither is anyone else. Rafa finished about Wenger last season. We got to the European Cup final yet he still suffered from comments like "we never challenge for the league". What do you want? A one off bust for the league that stretches us to the point that if we can't win back to back titles, we'll suffer from? Or a build up to sustained challenges and sustainable growth to the point we only need to invest one or two players in the squad every season? Benitez is a young, talented manager. He could easily spend two decades with us. He's learning and willing to try new things. What more do you want? A title challenge will come under Benitez.
