  1. Brendan Rodgers on Arsenal vs Liverpool: We know how to beat Arsene Wenger's side SAM LONG Saturday 22 August 2015 11:36 BSTLiverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is confident that he knows how his side can beat Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Monday night. The Merseysiders have enjoyed a flawless start to their Premier League campaign with two 1-0 victories and are just one of four teams in the top tier that are yet to drop points. But their record in north London has been far from impressive of late as the visitors were beaten by Arsene Wenger's side courtesy of an emphatic 4-1 scoreline during last season's corresponding fixture. The Gunners often dominate possession at home due to their brand of passing football, but Rodgers is adamant that his side do not need to command the lion's share of the ball to claim all three points. “If you assess the games we’ve had against Arsenal, especially at home we’ve always had dominance of the ball. “If you assess the last 10 games they’ve lost at home, the winners have averaged four shots on target with 43 percent possession. “So it tells you that you can go there, you don’t need to dominate the ball - but you need to dominate the space," he insisted. Arsenal wil be installed as favourites given that they will be on home turf but Rodgers believes that Liverpool's versatility can help them secure their third win in a row. “Tactically, we arrive with a good mind of how to win it. “Each game you assess and look tactically at where you can win the game. I think ideally every manager will want that consistency in the team, but that’s why you have a big squad - if you want to change the game dynamically. "There’s a real focus in this group, we know how to scrap and fight for the result as well as play good football. We’re confident we can get the result,” he added. http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/brendan-rodgers-on-arsenal-vs-liverpool-we-know-how-to-beat-arsene-wengers-side-a2918976.html all the quotes are from this mornings press conference, where he also confirmed Jordan Rossiter will be part of the first team squad this season and will be staying, whereas one or two others will be going out on loan

  3. Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson could miss Arsenal trip with heel problem JORDAN HENDERSON has admitted he must weigh up the long term risk to his fitness before deciding whether to lead Liverpool at Arsenal on Monday. By Paul JoycePUBLISHED: 00:01, Sat, Aug 22, 2015 | UPDATED: 00:29, Sat, Aug 22, 2015 The Liverpool captain has been troubled by a heel problem for a “few months,” but the injury has flared since the resumption of the new season and saw him substituted after 52 minutes of Monday’s win over Bournemouth. Henderson is being assessed on a daily basis and is a major doubt for the trip to The Emirates with Liverpool mindful of pushing him and then losing him for a number of games. “That is the problem,” said Henderson. “If I do play what is the risk and how long could I be out potentially if I do something in the game? “There are many factors that the manager and the medical team need to decide. I just want to hopefully play on Monday, but if I can’t I need to get fit as soon as possible. “I had pains in the bottom of both feet for a few months really, but nothing too major. Then in the last 10-15 minutes of the Stoke game I felt it bad and I couldn’t really put my weight on it. “That was the first time I really felt it and I couldn’t train for the next week but managed to play in the (Bournemouth) game. “In the second half, it was a case where the issue was the weight-bearing again and with 40 minutes to go it was wise to bring us off. “It has settled down over the last few days, but I don’t know what it will be like in terms of Monday. Hopefully, the pain and the symptoms die down. “When everything settles down I will be ok, but I don’t know when that will be.” Henderson’s fitness will be a concern for England coach Roy Hodgson who is already set to be without Jack Wilshere for the Euro 2016 qualifiers with San Marino and Switzerland at the start of next month. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will also draw up a contingency plan with Lucas, who has not featured in a match-day squad as yet, likely to come back under consideration. http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/599964/Jordan-Henderson-Liverpool-Arsenal-Bournemouth-Roy-Hodgson-England-Euro-2016

Liverpool midfielder Lucas a target for Italian giants Juventus JUVENTUS are considering Liverpool midfielder Lucas as an alternative to Schalke's Julian Draxler as the Italian champions look for reinforcements. By Paul Joyce PUBLISHED: 22:30, Thu, Aug 13, 2015 Serie A rivals Inter Milan also remain interested in the Brazil international, who was omitted from Brendan Rodgers' match-day squad for last weekend's game against Stoke following a fall-out. Inter's interest dates back to January when coach Roberto Mancini first tried to sign him, but Juventus are also now monitoring the situation. Juve recruited Sami Khedira on a free transfer from Real Madrid in the summer, but the injury-plagued Germany international faces being out until October after picking up a thigh injury. The last time Khedira made more than 20 starts in a domestic campaign was for Stuttgart in 2009-10 and, while Draxler is high on their wanted list, Lucas has also come under scrutiny. Liverpool still hope Mario Balotelli will leave before the transfer window closes - Sampdoria retain an interest - while striker Fabio Borini is also surplus to requirements. http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/598204/Liverpool-Lucas-Italian-giants-Juventus

  12. Being a football manager has always been stressful. But, as Michael Calvin discovered when researching his new book, in the modern world of 24-hour scrutiny, hi-tech coaching and highly paid players it is tougher – and more intrusive – than ever. And for new bosses there is only one certainty: it’s probably not going to last Brendan Rodgers enters the new season as favourite in the Sack Race, that tawdry distraction in which bets are solicited on the first Premier League manager to lose his job, but will not be unduly concerned. The Liverpool manager has overcome infinitely greater challenges, since an ability to compartmentalise his life is an intrinsic part of his coping strategy. “I’ve been through probably the most traumatic four years of my life,” he reflected. “I lost my mum. I lost my dad. I split up from the woman I loved for 23 years. I had a court case, two Old Bailey trials over six weeks with my son who was charged with sexual assault, which was an absolute disgrace. Yet professionally, here and at Swansea, these have been the best four years of my life. “Something has to come from within. You have to put the professional and personal to each side. It’s about being happy of course, but the owners have paid me to do a job, so I will do the job. There’s a story about Jimmy Sirrel at Notts County which has stuck with me since I was a young coach. “His wife, Cathy, died late on the Friday night, but he came in on the Saturday. Nothing was said. He got on with his job, he did his job. Team played the game, won the game. Normally after every game, him and his wife would sit at a little table and have a glass. Then they’d go. “This Saturday night he quickly popped into the bar. Someone asked about his wife, and he said, ‘She died last night’. He’d lost the woman of his life, his right hand, but he still came in and did his job. Makes you think, doesn’t it?” http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news-and-comment/kings-or-clowns-surviving-as-a-football-manager--michael-calvin-10446990.html

  14. Liverpool star Roberto Firmino out to buck Brazilian trend Players from Brazil have failed to light up the Premier League - but Liverpool's marquee new signing could be very different By Chris Bascombe 2:23PM BST 08 Aug 2015 Brazilian footballers have arrived in England promising a samba beat, but many have looked more flat-footed than fleet of foot. From Emerson to Robinho to Kleberson, there has been a recurring tale of giddiness at the purchase of an exotic name giving way to bewilderment at their underwhelming performances, a contrast often drawn in coaching circles between the hedonistic Brazilians, mentally tough Argentinians or emotional Uruguayans There are exceptions to render this a scatty stereotype, of course. Juninho - the first high profile arrival from Brazil to England in the Premier League era – was voted Middlesbrough’s greatest ever player; Gilberto Silva and Edu were key members of Arsenal’s squad of ‘Invincibles’; Oscar, Ramires and Willian have winners medals and work-rate aplenty at Chelsea to counter-balance the barbs aimed at David Luis’ laissez-faire approach to defending. At Liverpool, they’ve done as well as most from Brazilian imports. Fabio Aurelio was a fine but injury prone full-back under Rafa Benitez and Lucas Leiva is heading into his ninth season. Philippe Coutinho is the club’s current Player of Year. It is the twinkle-toed playmaker’s success at Anfield that eases concern as to whether £29 million compatriot Roberto Firmino will live up the expectations of his passport. One of the new recruit’s former coaches has words of reassurance. Markus Babbel – the ex-Liverpool defender who managed Firmino at Hoffenheim – says the midfielder’s traits are ideal for the Premier League because they have more in common with the Bundesliga than beach football. “Roberto is a Brazilian in nationality but the way he plays is more like a German,” said Babbel. “He is more like me! A lot of the Brazilian players have a relaxed attitude to the game off the field - they like to party when they’re not playing. Roberto is not like this. Roberto is very professional in everything he does and wants to be better. “When I heard Liverpool were signing him my first thought was someone working at Liverpool has good eyes to have identified him. “For a coach he is perfect because he wants to learn and he has discipline. If he gets kicked, he will not stay down if he is not hurt. He will get up and keep going. He is a fantastic guy and a player I expect to do well.” Firmino’s apprenticeship in German football bodes well for Liverpool, but his background story is a familiar rags-to-riches tale for Brazilian players, ticking all the boxes of a poverty stricken upbringing and bare foot street games. Born in Maceio, a deprived area in the north of the country, the sport proved an escape from the slums as sponsors and agents invested in his talent. After failing in a trial at Sao Paulo, he joined Clube de Regatas Brazil (CRB) before heading to Figueirense, aged 16, in 2008. He would leave Brazil for £3 million in 2010 after only 38 senior games. Firmino's potential has become more apparent recently. His goal record is modest, but has been rapidly improving since 2013. He scored 30 for club and country in the last two seasons, taking credit for 24 assists from midfield over that period. Regardless of how erratic other Brazilians have been in England, there is a familiar anticipation surrounding an occupant of that yellow jersey. Babbel, who now managers Swiss side Luzern, says Liverpool supporters are right to be excited. “When I was his manager I knew after one or two training sessions he had the quality,” said Babbel. “He is skilful and he can run for 90 minutes, so it is no surprise to me he has achieved this kind of move. For me he was at his best playing on the left but moving inside. He could also play behind the striker creating goals and he can score. He sees and delivers the last pass. He is versatile and can also play on the right so I see how he can work with Coutinho and Christian Benteke. “It makes me very proud to see how he has developed, even though it is a lot of money. The market being what it is you have to pay for the quality, but the Liverpool supporters will love him because of how he approaches the game. I am sure of this. He just wants to play. With Liverpool’s tradition they need to get back into the top. I like the coach. He was so close to winning the title there, which is so difficult when you see how the other clubs spend so much. Liverpool have the quality in their squad if they can make it work, although maybe much will depend on their quality on the bench.” Lack of match practice means Firmino will be a substitute at Stoke on Sunday, with Adam Lallana showing form in pre-season and Coutinho indispensible. Jordon Ibe will also be more prominent in the months ahead. Firmino must wait, but not too long. He is expected on the pitch at some point at The Britannia Stadium. “He will help Liverpool get back into the top four, but it is so difficult,” said Babbel. “I see the quality in the Liverpool squad with Roberto, Coutinho, Henderson, Milner and Benteke, but then you also see how Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea are spending money. If Liverpool bring all their quality together as a team it can work, and that is why Roberto is a good choice. He will work for his team mates and his manager rather than look to be an individual. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/liverpool/11791819/Liverpool-star-Roberto-Firmino-out-to-buck-Brazilian-trend.html

  16. EXCLUSIVE: Werner - Why Liverpool FC decided to keep faith in Brendan Rodgers 22:30, 7 August 2015By James Pearce "We do believe Brendan is the right man for Liverpool and the right man to take the club forward" Liverpool chairman Tom Werner is convinced that the decision to keep faith with Brendan Rodgers will be vindicated this season. In an exclusive interview with the ECHO, Werner revealed why owners Fenway Sports Group ignored calls for a change of manager following the Reds' dramatic slump towards the end of the 2014/15 campaign. The manner in which Rodgers had masterminded a thrilling title challenge 12 months earlier saved him from the axe and Werner is backing the Northern Irishman to get Liverpool back to that level. “First of all, we take a long-term view on these matters,” Werner told the ECHO. “We believed in Brendan when he won Manager of the Year for 2013/14. That was only a year earlier when he was awarded that compliment. “I think our track record demonstrates that our approach and attitude is very much focused on stability. We have demonstrated that both on and off the pitch. “We do believe Brendan is the right man for Liverpool and the right man to take the club forward. “When we hired Brendan we wanted to see improvement. "Hopefully when we have a conversation in a year’s time he will have demonstrated and the squad will have demonstrated that we’ve regained top form again.” Last season was disappointing - we expect we're going to see a strong improvement Werner and FSG president Mike Gordon flew to Merseyside to conduct the end of season review having watched Liverpool trail home sixth in the Premier League. Rodgers' side took just eight points out of the last 27 on offer and suffered a 6-1 humiliation at Stoke on the final day. All targets had been missed but rather than sack the manager they decided to give him the tools required to launch a revival. They sanctioned a £80million spending spree on seven summer signings, including the likes of Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino. They also gave him permission to overhaul his backroom staff. “Last season was somewhat disappointing, obviously. We had a goal of reaching the top four having qualified for the Champions League the year before,” Werner said. “We wanted to see some progress. There were bright spots along the way. “There was a period in the season from around the halfway mark when we really did show top form. But the end of the season was disappointing. “I don’t really want to get into the reasons why we fell short of our goals. “What I will say is that the review was no different from the review we do at the end of every season. It was about looking at how we can move forward as a club and be consistently stronger. “We had some very constructive discussions with Brendan. We learned a lot and we are very much looking forward to the start of the season because we’re a stronger team now than we were a year ago. “Brendan was very instrumental in the transfer targets that we went after this summer. We expect we’re going to see a strong improvement.” I'm excited about the new staff we've brought in Werner confirmed that it was Rodgers' decision to show the door to assistant boss Colin Pascoe and first-team coach Mike Marsh and appoint Sean O'Driscoll, Pep Lijnders and Gary McAllister. “I want to thank Colin and Mike for their services but I’m excited about the new staff that Brendan has brought in,” he said. “As Brendan has already articulated, it was his decision and the resumes of the gentlemen brought in are very impressive. “I’ve met Sean and Pep. Sean has a lot of coaching experience and was working with England Under-19s. He’s hugely respected for his knowledge. “All the feedback we’ve had on Pep during his time at the Academy has been very positive. We had heard a lot about him from his coaching at Porto and he’s taken on a newly created position at the club. “Gary has a connection with the football club having served as a player. He has also managed Coventry City and Leeds United. “The three new members of staff are outstanding and I’m sure the squad will benefit a lot from having them around.” I'm looking forward to seeing how we play - I expect us to make our supporters proud Werner is hoping a summer of sweeping changes will pay off when Liverpool return to the Britannia Stadium to get their new Premier League campaign underway on Sunday. It's about atoning for what happened there back in May and putting down a marker for the campaign ahead. "I don’t want to put too much pressure on any one game or the need to get off to a good start, but it would certainly help," Werner added. "It would be marvellous to take three points. Obviously, the end of last season was very disappointing. "It would be nice if we came away from Stoke with a much better performance this time around. "I feel that everyone knows what their responsibilities are. We have set good, but honest expectations. "I'm looking forward to seeing how we play. I expect us to make our supporters proud." http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/exclusive-werner-liverpool-fc-decided-9815219

  18. Benteke among the big boys now as Chelsea star Eden Hazard lays marker for Liverpool man AMONG the numerous text messages Christian Benteke received congratulating him on a move to Liverpool, there is one in particular that sticks in his mind. By Paul JoycePUBLISHED: 22:30, Thu, Aug 6, 2015 | UPDATED: 22:43, Thu, Aug 6, 2015 It was sent by Chelsea's mercurial Eden Hazard who offered his well-wishes before immediately laying down a challenge from the champions. As an insight into the step up in standard, the expectation and pressure that now swirls around Benteke following his £32.5million move from Aston Villa, the dispatch from a Belgium team-mate and friend, but someone he must now consider a rival, neatly encapsulates everything. "He is happy for me," said Benteke with a smile. "He said now I have a chance to win and to beat him. "I think we have a chance. We have a good squad. It is up to us now to show them." It is a sign of the times at Anfield that title talk is considered pie-in-the-sky following last season's excesses, but Benteke will still find the coming months unforgiving. A 'to do' list which currently encompasses house-hunting and acclimatising to his new surroundings, will broaden from the moment he steps out on the pitch against Stoke on Sunday. He must provide the focal point Liverpool lacked last term, justify his lofty price-tag by maintaining his ratio of a goal every two games since arriving in England, propel his new team back into the Champions League and allow a club, currently shorn of heroes, to dream again. Benteke accepts the responsibility without quibble. "I believe whatever level I play at I will score goals," said the striker. "I don't want to be arrogant, but since I came to England I've proved I wasn't a bad player. "I can produce the goals, but I am not alone here. That is the good thing. I have players behind me and around me. "It is not about money. I knew if I joined a big club I would have some pressure, so I am ready for this challenge. I will work hard and not worry about things. "The pressure will bring the best out of me. "I am a player who came here to improve myself and to be bigger than before. I am not coming in here saying I will be a hero to the fans. "Of course, I would appreciate it if they love me, but it is not my main goal. If I do well, then everyone will be happy. It is up to me." There is a shyness to Benteke betrayed by the staccato nature of his answers which jars with his image as human wrecking ball. Liverpool supporters might recognise the contradiction. In last season's FA Cup semi-final he continued to wage war on Brendan Rodgers' ragged defence only to find himself anchored on the periphery in the final itself and neither able to rouse himself nor his team-mates. Liverpool need the beast inside their new No9 to reveal itself, starting at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday when thoughts will drift back to last season's 6-1 drubbing - a result which even left Benteke "shocked" when he spotted the scoreline following Villa's own final-day defeat against Burnley. This brings into focus how Rodgers will harness Benteke's skills. The player is loath to divulge the details of his conversations with the Liverpool manager but he is more open on former manager Tim Sherwood's assertion that he will not thrive on Merseyside because they will not supply enough crosses into the penalty area to exploit his aerial strength. "I don't believe that and I told him," said Benteke, 24. "I said football has changed, football now is modern and I can adapt. It is not just about crossing. "I can score normal goals, too. I told him I am not afraid about it. If Liverpool bought me, then they know how to use me. "That is why I came here and I can show I can play with my feet, too." The chest trap and thrilling volley Benteke dispatched into the top corner on his debut in the friendly with Swindon last weekend was an instant indication of that intent. Liverpool should benefit from his presence. Not least because defenders such as Martin Skrtel, driven to distraction by Benteke in the past when he scored five goals in six games in a reign of terror against Liverpool, can watch others try and tame him. "I told them we won't fight like we used to do," said Benteke. "We will fight together any opponents." Rodgers, aware his signing must fire, will look forward to that. http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/596568/Christian-Benteke-Liverpool-big-boys-Chelsea-Eden-Hazard-lay-marker
