I see nothing wrong with player contracts. After all, every employee has a contract and it serves to protect both parties. An employer can't just kick you out because you're often ill, and employees can't just walk away the second a better offer comes along. While players don't appear to be able to give notice on a contract, neither do clubs without exceptional grounds. Cuts both ways.

Not necessarily. He was bought by Houllier to do a job, and Rafa wanted him to do a completely different job. I don't think for a second he'd have set the league on fire, but he wouldn't have been such a duck out of water in Houllier's side.

Been a good, if extremely one-footed, servant to the club. Shame that he has to go out on such a sour note (I dare say he will forever be associated most strongly with "c*ckstash" for me), but, sadly, I doubt if he'd redeem himself next season, given the way he's declined over the last season or two. Not too much to worry about at the moment, but definitely something to keep an eye on in the future. As you say, out of 25 players, and there's still the fact that it's probably illegal. Depending on when the first court case, it could be many years before they get to introduce it or forbidden from doing so. On the other hand, it might take years to get rid of/confirm the b*****d rule if it goes to court.

I'm not sure the regulations cover such situations, there's just precedent. It allows them to screw over the little clubs when the very big clubs need a helping hand. Note, they didn't feel the need to bump Bayern into the CL last season at Derry's expense. I guess Beckenbauer's only the Kaiser, not the Prime Minister. Sickening nepotism. -

Strikes me as a crazy decision, but who knows what's actually written in the contract. It wouldn't surprise me to find clauses regarding financial penalties for such contingencies. If there aren't though, I don't see how Chelsea would have a leg to stand on in a real court, seeing as it was their termination of the contract that directly caused the losses for which they're claiming, not Mutu's snorting coke.
