What I don’t get is… if Darren England has a button to press which gives him direct access to Hooper’s earpiece, which is specifically to be used in the event of a clear and obvious error by a referee, the result of which is that play is stopped or rewound back to the point where the error occurred, then why the f*** didn’t he press it and tell the ref that HE had made an error? can’t do anything about it FFS. It’s exactly what VAR is for. It’s its raison d’etre. What does he think his function is other than to tell the ref there’s been a mistake?

He has a big button in front of him that he can press to alert the referee to “clear and obvious errors”. But chooses not to use it to tell the ref he’s made one himself.

If England was doing that deliberately, his role in it and what he says is spot on. Either that or he’s literally some kind of imbecile.

England should resign as a VAR and there needs to be a commitment to phasing out all of the on field refs from VAR duties unless that’s becomes their specialism, with all VARs becoming specialists. and I don’t think any of those involved should ever referee a Liverpool game again.

Don’t forget that the panel is an FA panel. Not PGMOL. i can’t see anyone wanting to associate themselves with many of the VAR decisions on Saturday.

I think it will be rescinded. I think the main reason will be that the panel will agree that it was a subjective call and therefore didn’t reach the threshold for a VAR intervention. Everyone can see that the VARs went off the rails and they won’t want to be seen to be complicit in that.

Yeah, I think the root of this is that the VARs, despite the rhetoric of not PGMOL not wanting them to re-ref the game, are prone to trying to persuade the onfield ref that their own opinion is more correct. looked like a clear case of, “look at this!”. Ignore the rest of that and what you thought before, “look at this!”. there needs to be far more structure as to how VARs talk and present to refs. This is one of the reasons why there’s no reason at all that refs make good VARs.
