    I don’t object at all to a chewing the fat convo. Is it hypothetically possible that we’d be better off now if Tsimikas had come on for 20 mins here and there? Maybe. I’ve no idea. It’s all harmless, of course. But it’s daft.

    I did like your answer. I asked why you thought Slot should trust the squad players more, and you said “Based on me watching those players”. That’s a lovely answer. I don’t think it’s at all disingenuous to suggest you were saying you’d seen something that Slot hadn’t.

    “We’ll probably never know” is fine. I started all this by responding to “it’s pretty clear” and “the squad players are perfectly capable”.

    No that’s not it at all. It’s just a simple question: why has he not used the squad players more? It can only be because he’s calculated that they’re not good enough. Or that he didn’t realise the players he has used would get tired. All managers make mistakes. Of course they do. But this wouldn’t be a one-off mistake. This would be a season-long failure to see what Gethin and Cobs could clearly see. Does that sound likely?

    My criticism of someone like Southgate would be that he’s not as good as the managers he’s up against. It wouldn’t be “me and these knobs on a forum can see this very obvious thing that he can’t see”. And you can multiply that by a hundred when it’s someone who’s about to bring us the league title. Yeah, like I said, it’s you thinking you know more about the players and the game than he does. Which, maybe, is the point of a forum but it’s daft isn’t it.

    Based on… you knowing the players or the game better than he does? Like I know you were being sarcastic about that but it’s the clear implication of your point. But … I’ve been around football forums long enough to know the next reply is “oh so aren’t we allowed to ever disagree with a manager about anything?” and you’ve been around long enough to know what follows that so let’s not bother.

    As to why I think he hasn’t used the squad more: I assume it’s because he sees them in training and calculates that he’ll win more games using the players he uses than those he doesn’t.

    Ok, I’m not sure of the difference between unexpected success and over performance but I’ll take it in good faith that a distinction exists. For next season, either we continue with several players that Slot doesn’t rate, or we replace several players. Either scenario makes it difficult to win the league.

    I think the main thing is we have a new manager who doesn’t have the squad he wants. Brilliant over performance this year — if we’d made signings last summer, finished fourth this year, and won it next then we’d be happy with that. The order of things may have changed a bit. No excuses not to be up there in 26/27 though.
