I have to agree with John here. I mean, it's a shame that United held a gun to Ronaldo's head and forced him to sign that contract agreement. If they just hadn't done that.... Anyways, give me a break. Players would NEVER accept being on one-year contracts only. If you asked the PFA about it they'd laugh at you for about half an hour. It gives the teams way more leverage on them than they have right now. Plus having long-term contracts tends to work in favor of the players than it does in favor of the teams. Think Kewell is happy that he had several years of high salary that his play on the field didn't dictate?

Just because their other sporting teams have had no success doesn't mean it's their fault. In general (with few exceptions, exceptions that don't involve Messrs. Hicks and Gillette), the only thing that US sports team owners do is write the checks. And Hicks was willing to write the biggest check in sports history -- the 10 year, $252 million contract the Texas Rangers gave to Alex Rodriguez in 2001. He also signed a pitcher to a 6 year, $60 million contract that same month. Now, it turns out the team's management was horrible and they spent 3 years in last place after those deals were signed. But Hicks, especially, has never been one that's been reticent to splash the cash when the team's management tells him it's a good idea.

I don't think you (or anyone) could name one manager in the history of the game who hasn't made quite a few bad signings.

I doubt they're going to ban 3rd party ownership. It's the way things generally work in the South American leagues, and without it, the leagues wouldn't be able to survive at anywhere near the level they survive at right now.
