I read the book a while ago - its OK - very French, even after the translation! Not too controversial I didn't think, concentrates on individuals & relationships rather than trying to set out to blame anyone. Its got a few old stereotypes in there but you'd have to expect that to creep into something written by any foreigner. I don't think they were particularly overdone bearing inmind what was going on at the time though it doesn't really add much context. Of course what the Film director will do with it needn't necessarily reflect the book, I suspect it'll knock a few noses out of joint to get a bit of publicity
