If you google back to 2014 press reports you'll see that Markovic was considered a hot prospect, particularly on the back of the Europa league campaigns. Us getting him ahead of Chelsea was a bit of a coup, though spoiled a bit by Brendan then apparently taking the Sanchez move for granted immediately after that, and then significantly further spoiled by Markovic completely whithering away as a player.

Sounds a very reasonable response from him, it was bound to happen and good it happened early in the season, in a match we won. Needs to balance it out now and not be so predicatable

They are a weird pair really. I’ve seen plenty of young players completely wilt with the pressure of professional football but rarely having had played at international level and being too, as they were, so sought after. Markovic had starred in Europa league games with both Partizan and Benfica, which made it seem like he was a real prospect at the time. The fact that they now look like a football is a foreign object to them is a bit bizarre. Though some posters on here specifically did question Markovic’s personality which has proved very prescient.
