Like the earlier poster, I was very upset when Keegan left for Hamburg as it seemed to be a MASSIVE step down, but the money was good for him. No internet back then and the signing of Dalglish just seemed to happen and be on the radio, TV and in the papers. The fact that we made 60 thousand quid on the deal was icing on the cake.
McManaman and Owen pissed me off at the time, but the moves were understandable for them as individuals.
Sterling leaving was crap at the time, but you can see why he left and why the club let him go. He got paid an obscene amount of money and we got a decent fee.
I have no issues with any of the others mentioned. For the most part, they gave 100% at the club (Coutinho maybe 75%) and left when we were struggling, or needed the money. Also, I don't recall us losing money on any of these good transfers, and I'm not going to mention Andy C. Oops.
We've discussed this many times, but we have to remember that for the players, it's a job and not a life consuming passion that started at the moment of birth. These lads have a short period to get some serious money, unless they stumble into punditry.
Liverpool FC means a heck of a lot more to us than it does to them.
