If we don't sign anyone i'm sure it'll be lack of availability over unwillingness to spend or failure to identify areas of weakness. We have a fair few weaknesses, the most pertinent being a basic inability to defend. We won't get top four without some changes to the defence - coaching, mentality or personnel wise.

The best fullbacks of the last few decades each side are Babbel and Aurelio. Finnan and Arbeloa were good too. Didn't like Riise, me.

Against some opposition, Alonso needed Mascherano. He couldn't be the furthest back or we were exposed. Gerrard will suffer the same problem. I think Gerrard was poor against Stoke, his ball retention was pretty awful and he was not quick enough around the pitch. He had just come back from a long term injury though. I think this is all quite hopeful, really. I think the reality of Gerrard as a DM will hit hard in an away game soon.

No-one links the midfield and attack then, as has been said. His role in that is important enough to warrant a start, as he's the only one in the entire squad who can do it effectively. He's out of form, it won't last forever. His shooting is s**** though, but with young players it sometimes just clicks one day and they don't look back. Important to remember how young he is.
