If he’s as good as the vast majority of that list, then we have one of the best midfielders in the world on a plate seemingly, as each of those was at some point over the last 30 years - bar Mikel! I didn’t notice him at all last year or hear anything about him so just can’t understand why we’ve taken all summer to sign him on the basis of this analysis or bothered exploring other players.

This is so true and seemingly ignored. How many 19 year olds actually make an impact on a club wanting to win titles. Very, very few. Our season seems to be resting on his shoulders but we actually need a proper, experienced defensive midfielder not someone just out of school.

It’s a catch 22. Say, we sign Caicedo and Mac Allister when Brighton did, do they go on to be the same players? They wouldn’t have got anything like the game time they had at Brighton the past couple of seasons. Unfortunately, now any young players that does develop and look the real deal will cost a stupid amount if an elite club comes in. Take, Lavia. If he came here before Soton we’d likely have done the same as Man City have. Now that he’s worked out at a lower club, they want a fortune for him. I don’t think it’s quite as easy as looking at these expensive players and saying we should have signed them a move ago or sign the next ones just before they come good.

You’d be up in arms if we recruited two unknowns for 12.5 and 4.5!

Of all of the failings with signings, this is the glaring one. I think a right back was our priority but appreciate that is a minority view but it killed us last year and this year will do so again if the solution is, move Trent in to midfield and let him cover the position when we don't have the ball. It is a recipe for disaster with the current players.

Great if true but it’s highly unlikely that Mbappe plays a season out of the champs league. he will have his sights set on long term records and he needs to be playing that competition every year to stand any chance.

Mo is the best in the world but won’t be in a couple of years. Top scouting and deep pockets both required to replace him - could be a problem! especially if we hold onto him and he goes for free.
