hmmmmmmm. hyypia fills that criterion for me, yet doesn't quite strike me as the kind of player that would make automatic first choice in any team. i take your point though, eskimo and imo you're right, for the most part.

oh, carra's canny alright. but he is not 'dirty'. it's one thing to 'operate outside the rules', but it's another to be cynical. carvahlo has to be the worst defender in the premiership for pulling opponents' shirts in the box. i'm constantly amazed that he avoids getting booked or sent off. yet with carra, if his challenges aren't 'legal' it's usually hard to spot where he has conned the ref. so while carvahlo is a very effective centre half, i'd say - given the right officials - he could be the kind of liability to his team that carra never will be.

carra? hyypia? i think carvalho gets away with so much of it because of the team he plays for and his colleagues' adeptness at hounding the ref at every turn.

slight tangent, but to me 'world class' means 'likely to walk straight into any team in the world'

much as i love Anfield and all the history and heritage, i for one cannot wait for the day i can watch an LFC home match with enough space to accommodate my legs. i'm not overly tall (6'2"), but i've yet to enjoy a match without my dodgy knee being in utter agony, while the other leg is merely cramped/beset with pins and needles.

i agree with sabre, as evidenced by pleat's almost malicious mispronunciation of foreign players' names.
