Don't really want to get in an argument if I can, certainly not on the internet, so take the following in that light.
Liverpool Football Club and it's fan base, has, as I see it, since the time of Shankly seemed to try and be about 'more'. Pathetic sloganeering aside, it seemed to try and be more representative of its city and its workers' lives. I'm from inner city Cardiff, a dock city, from Roath, not a stone's throw from Splott, Adamsdown, and Tiger Bay. Multiculturalism was not a label but my unconscious experience growing up and that was my outsider's view of Liverpool as a city and a club. They had great Welsh players, Scots, Irish and English too, then an Aussie and Danes when I first started really watching football. As did others obviously but Rush and Kenny were otherworldly to me. I remember Digger and that banana and even as a d****ead teen thinking WTF.
So I am disappointed in Henderson going there perhaps because it makes me think I would probably abandon my current job if someone was going to quadruple my wages and the job was going to be a bit easier now. If it's true his LGBT stance was PR driven only then that is far worse than taking the Saud coin.
All the argument about Henderson not being one of 'ours' now so it doesn't matter is not for me. I didn't forget about Rush or Kenny and their 'legacy' or character when they left. Lawrenson's personality emerging after he ceased being a playing Red stung. Just like hearing about Smith's attitude to Howard Gayle. Jan, Bobby et al and their drink driving was/is unacceptable.
Comparing Saudi to issues about our/other governments is weak too. As a history teacher I know that the standards government hold themselves too are not based on ethics as I view them. How about worrying about what we can control, our own personal standards and expectations and those of our players. Aim for the stars and deal with my/any failings. I didn't expect Henderson's stance to lead to a brave new world but understood the importance of comradeship and the impact of a public stance for those who feel marginalised in our society, let alone our own fanbase.
Has Henderson publicly addressed the concerns aired over his move? I hope he does at least in private, his public stance is the elephant in the room.
