  2. Its a good point that. When was the last time we asked for, and got, top dollar for players we deemed superfluous. Compare that to when he took over and we couldnt give people away...
  3. Thats not too bad tbh, with the exception of James, Johnson, Laursen (!) and Young. Reckon I'd have gone for Reina, Sagna, Vidic and Hleb before them.
  4. It shouldnt surprise anyone that, I mean, what would 'Redders' know about a midfielder who is prepared to do all the dirty work and is effective ? Neither were exactly his strong suit were they ? What was their midfield by the way ? I imagine Gerrard strolled it did he ? Did their Frank get in ?
  5. Agree with all that. I'd describe him as "tidy". Nothing more. I had some Catalan friends over earlier this year, they had him down as the best player in the World ! The best player in the World, doesnt get dragged off after 60 mins when you're 1-0 down in a CL Semi Final though, does he ?
  6. Havent read it for a couple of years now - not for any reason, so cant comment on how it has been lately, but this fanzine set the standard for all fanzines. When it first started, I had never read anything like it before. It was brilliant. I remember my Dad laughing his head off, reading it. That and Whats The Score were boss. I remember the editor writing something along the lines of "if your happy with Souness, youre not the men Shankly thought you were" - which I thought was the beginning of the end. Regardless of the point he was making, it was pompous beyond belief. MancWatch in the early 90s was great and his ongoing argument with one correspondant about the merits of Jamie Redknapp used to make me laugh - like two drunks in a pub who were never going to agree, but kept trying to persuade the other.... Anyway, I dont know how good its been lately, but however negative the editor has become, he also wrote this: "if they ever ask me if I wanted to relive 6 minutes of my life over and over again it would be the period of time where my team roared like lions and blasted the best team in Europe off the stage. We will always remember the shootout, the celebrations and the presentation and they were fantastic, please don’t ever misunderstand me. We won, and in sport that no! t only counts for a lot it usually counts for everything – and we get to keep that beautiful trophy for all time - but from Gerrard powering Riise’s cross to Alonso blasting into the roof of the net, that WAS Liverpool Football Club in capsule form. The players and managers we’ve lost, the disasters we’ve had to face, the likes of Byrne in 1965 and the walking wounded at Munich in 1981, the Michael Thomas goal, Arsenal in Cardiff, Gerard’s heart surgery – and countless, countless other moments in our history. You think you’ve got us beat? You think we’re just going to lie down and take what you’re giving us? We’re not. We’re Liverpool f***ing Football Club and don’t you forget it. Ever. " Just brilliant. I remember reading it post-Istanbul and being in tears !!!!!

I'd agree with that. It was excellent, moving in the first instance - rage inspiring in the second. The contribution from Neil Fitzmaurice about going up to Glasgow was great - as was Dave Kirby talking about the rag - the way his lip curled in sheer disgust.... Well done to all involved.
  8. Me. I was in the pens in the Leppings Lane end. Luckily for me and my mate, we had been pushed right down to the front just before kick off and got dragged out of that little gate just when the crush started to get unbearable.... My first away game without my Dad, who was with my Uncles in the stand on the left hand side. When I finally got up there to see them, they were in a terrible state. I had been oblivious to the seriousness of the situation.
  9. Agreed, not because of Walcott but because he showed with those tackles that he wasnt intimidated by the occasion. He just got on with his normal game, which showed a great temperament. Agree with the comments about Insua and Nemeth earlier in the thread. Hopefully this will be the start of Rafa's youth policy paying off. Early days, admittedly.
  10. Very good debut - didnt look out of place in any way. As an aside, can you imagine the media w***fest if Wenger had thrown some unknown reserve kid in and he performed as well as that in a game as big as that ?
  11. Maybe not so much on the pitch, but from stories I've been told by people a bit older than me (and they maybe wrong/exaggerated), he and Case were as thick as thieves off the pitch and got into a few 'scrapes'. There's one story about being in a hotel over the water and it ended up being those two against the staff, residents, coppers etc and more than holding their own. Evidently, Terry Mac tried to get involved at one point to help them out - seen how mad it/they was/were and decided it wasnt worth it and went to bed.... As I say, I dont think he was a self proclaimed 'Hard Man', but I dont think he took any s*** from anyone. Tommy Smith tells a story, I think its in the dressing room in Rome 77, where as they're getting changed Kennedy is seriously tense and gives Smith a load of abuse. Smith tells it like he has to get a couple of the boys in - as if to say, someone best stop him or I'll hurt him. When my Dad heard that he thought it was hilarious. Basically, if you f***ed with Jimmy or Ray, you f***ed with them both - and there was nothing down for you.... Smith seems to give it the old Rigsby saying to me: "If you cant box, wear a big hat."
  12. That finished his Liverpool career according to Phil Neal that - Paisley was disgusted by it and could get him out the door quick enough after it - again, according to Zico.
  13. Yes, I realise that now - I meant more about how good Emlyn was rather than how bad Smith was - which he clearly wasnt. I just dont think the man has an ounce of dignity in him - he is still doing interviews saying what he'd do to Ronaldo nowadays or how he'd have had Keane etc etc. Bit pathetic really, especially when he probably wasnt even the hardest man in our dressing room - I'm thinking Jimmy Case or Ray Kennedy.
  14. Might have had something to do with the fact that as a player, Smith wasnt fit to lace Hughes' boots. Gets on my nerves this "I was a hard man" thing he does. You only have to look at the way Bremner took the piss out of him. He's now a bit of a rent-a-quote embarassment, reguarly trotting out the tired old "we won the league with 14 players" crap. This was also the man who swore blind that Steven Gerrards natural position was Right Back...
  15. As far as I could make out, they were complaining about the Liverpool fans sitting above them - and that the stewards were not doing anything about them - dont know what had gone on with them though. One fella by me in the Centenary was having murder with one of the Head stewards and while the other stewards tried to calm him down, he (the Head Steward) stood behind them basically goading this fella and his lad. It was really big and clever....
  16. Thats a brilliant piece. Obviously I'm biased, but bloody hell, it puts some of our own sports channels to shame. Impressed by Sammy Lee's spanish as well. Muy bien.
  17. "There's been bits of good play, but far, far too often it's been scrappy - no-ones had control - disappointing, Alonso has disappeared etc etc etc" he said that just after Gerrard scored the 4th btw.... I dont understand why he was doing the/a game anyway ?
  18. Torres Alonso Gerrard
  19. Quite possibly the greatest thing ever written on this forum... Closely followed by:-
  20. Spot on mate, never a Liverpool player....

Yeah, that pissed me of as well. I dont understand what people expected of this channel though, it was never going to be compulsive viewing from start to finish was it ? But it is worth watch from time to time - Brian Reade bringing up the subject of Sean Dundee to Roy Evans last night was quite funny... Also, the fact that it does have 'fans' (Dave Kirby, Nicky Alt, Dave Usher etc etc etc) on these programs is good I think.
  22. Mate, he's first choice in the Argentinian National side - one of the best sides in the World....
  23. Thats just b******s. He is a very, very good defender. He wasnt s*** in the Copa America - and the fact that he is a regular starter for one of the best International teams in the World, should tell its own story... Better option that anything we currently have at left back.
  24. Which I would maintain, is what you are doing there.
  25. Excellent post.
