I agree that part of the issue is how long we hold onto the ball for. It was a pet hobby of mine in the 13/14 season to see how many times we released the ball before I could count to 3, and we were relentless in releasing it quickly. Now it is a good 4 or 5 count.

I had an odd, random thought about all of this stats stuff the other day, and extrapolated it to the following nightmarish ultimate statistically driven business management scenario. Say our stats man looks at what inputs into success and creates a formula that on average the winning teams stats are made up of: Defenses that only allow 8 chances at goal per game Defenses that have a successful tackle % of 78% Defenses that limit goal opportunities / shots to within an average 15.3 yards from goal Defense only needs to win 46% of aerial duels Central midfield have to win the ball within 14.7 seconds of conceding possession. Midfield have to recycle the ball within 3.8 seconds of receiving the ball. Assists from midfielders are from passes averaging minimum 28 yards in length. Assists from midfielders are from within 2.3 seconds of obtaining possession. Successful dribble distance is 24 yards in length and possession held for 4.9 seconds before releasing the ball And so on Then what you have is a wage model based upon a basic with a win / points bonus but also with players individually receiving incremental bonuses based upon you achieving your own statistical goals for your role within a match. So if you achieve the statistical inputs that indicate increased win success you get paid. Everyone does this and we should win. So say the statistics. Its a f***ing horrible thought isn't it, but I really wouldn't put it past us to lean this way in some form or other.
