It seems common sense to me that kids should learn that a first touch is not a means to an end. you don't trap the ball, then think, what can I do with it, you control the ball into the area that you wish to run/shoot/pass. Xabi was a great example of this and used it to beat a man but it actually got him into trouble as the opponents realised he did it every time and stopped pressing him as he received a pass they just moved to where the ball was going to be after his first touch. Obviously he adapted to this and varied it. Shelvey does this, he is also comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, this is not a coincidence IMO.
