They sounded weird at the time, but in hindsight everybody close to it (he, his manager, the club) may have known that he had played his last game for us - or at least that it was likely. For what it's worth, I imagine it has always been his goal to get a move to Barcelona - basically because of his wife's family links there. It's probably hard for us to take as fans but, despite the fact that he signed a new deal and publicly pledged his future to Liverpool (if we made it into the Champions League), it didn't mean a hell of a lot when it became clear that Barcelona were prepared to trigger his release clause. His dream move was on - would he get another chance? Maybe - but you never know... Everybody involved probably new about this in advance of the World Cup. With what happened at the World Cup, everything that came after seemed like more of a case of "does this change anything?", with the parties involved - rather than the start of the conversation. Barcelona probably tried to drive the price down, etc. etc.
