Whoever we sign as fullbacks will tell us loads about how we are going to play although there are probably not loads of Trent style players about. The more vanilla the fullbacks the more we need a Coutinho style midfielder.

I think a few things that are frustrating other than going for free to me are when Owen and McManaman left it didn’t feel like Madrid were rivals like they are today. We seem to meet Madrid in Europe every year now. So leaving your boyhood team ( who are one of the best teams in the world which is important to remember ) to go and play for Madrid and come back and potentially beat your Boyhood team feels off. The dream is the other way round. The second annoyance is that leaving Liverpool when they are at their best and you are too by winding down your contract for the lure of Madrid really is a PR dream for Madrid. It helps elevate them as the ultimate players dream. Im just imagining someone like Raul winning it all at Madrid and leaving on a free as he’s got to play for Liverpool even though he’s just won the league.

Great summary. It’s a huge summer and a really intriguing one too. Slot really did brilliantly last year in shepherding an inherited squad. This summer and next season is an entirely different test for him.

It’ll be like Owen. We won’t want to pay a fee for him even if it’s reasonably low. I think he’ll do well there too though. It’s a good fit. The emphasis is on attacking play which is where he’s unique. It’s as easier league and there is probably only a handful of games where he’ll really need to be defensively on it. You don’t win the league here or the champs league if you’re as poor defensively as is often stated so he’ll be mostly fine there. I don’t think they’ll be as forgiving there but he’s free so that’ll work both ways for him.

It’s the manner of it. If Zubimendi had wound down his contract over 4 years and toyed with his own fans in that time and then left on a free to you know who I’d be surprised if the fans were excited for him. I’m frustrated that he’s going to Madrid for free. That’s it really. We have loads to do and we don’t like spending so it’s a double blow to a team that’s just lost an excellent one of a kind player and now needs to replace him as well as lots of other business.

I’m salty that Madrid will sell him in a few years for loads of money and perhaps use the money to lure another player away from us. Probably Macca.

If you were part of last week v spurs which he was then it blows my mind that he’s thinking “Madrid is going to be better than this” It just isn’t.
