*obviously too long for the BBC but I sent it to the spectator, Johnson and to Howard as well.* Bigley's Fate - a response. Dear Sir, It was with dismay that I read the opinion about Liverpool in magazine of which you are Editor. The use of Hillsborough as an analogy to the feelings expressed over the death of Mr Bigley is being met with a feeling of anger and disappointment. Simple little things could have been checked before this article went to print. Simple things such as the number of people who died at Hillsborough and even the reasons. Check the Taylor report which cleared the fans of blame. It renders the article worthless of anything other than an attack on the city of Liverpool which is nothing more than an opinion ? and a poor one at that. It appears as if the writer of the article does nothing more than dredge up some old memories of how Liverpool was perceived and marginalized by the media and then uses some half remembered news headlines to perpetuate those myths. Check your facts, do your research. The very basis of journalism. Instead the stance of your magazine is nothing more than sensationalism with a healthy dose of attacking a minority in order to get a nodding approval from a majority. Try visiting Liverpool. Try its restaurants, its pubs, its clubs, its shops, its history. Check out the museums, the art and , yes ? the people. The very people you attack in your magazine. The reality is far removed form the broad-brush image you choose to portray. The reality is a city that is vibrant, lively, friendly and welcoming. Maybe you don?t want to do this. Maybe, rather than appeal to new readers, you would rather pander to the bigot and ill informed idiots similar to the writer of the Bigley article. Truly your loss ? however do bear in mind that what is written will reach a wider audience than that which it targets. I live away from England at the moment and I have spent many hours defending Liverpool and the UK. Most of the defense has been necessary due to the ill informed wittering of media outlets such as yours that does not check facts and only writes of the Liverpool that it hears about in the media. The media feeding the media is nothing more than shoddy and cheap journalism and this article is clearly one of the experts in this field. Of course if you want some more facts about Hillsborough you could try this website http://www.contrast.org/hillsborough/ or you could ask Liverpool fan and leader of your party ? Mr Howard, although I suspect that my suggestion will fall upon the fallow ground that is the collective thought process of anyone connected with the writing and publishing of the Spectator. Yours Sincerely,
