So here we are, January 1st and three of our best players can now sign a pre contract with another club from abroad.
In our history we've seen good/great players leave and we've managed fine. Keegan, Souness, Rush, McManaman, Owen, Alonso, Suarez for example.
But I don't think we will be fine if three of our best players all go at the same time. FSG pulled a blinder by hiring Slot but they've f***ed up big time in allowing this situation to develop.
These contracts should've been sorted two years ago, to establish their intentions going forward and protect the club by selling them for a hefty fee if no agreement could be made.
In my opinion, order of priority for contract signing is as follows:
1) Van Dijk : A Rolls Royce of a player, a leader, solid at the back, this guy makes our entire defence tick. Our defence isn't as good with him not in it.
2) Salah : Our best forward, most assists and goals, his consistency is incredible. He leads by example, has successfully adapted his game to make himself even better. But Salah leaving I think doesn't affect our attack as much as Virgil does with the defence.
3) Trent : Fantastic footballer, has great vision, his passing is one of the best in the game, a Scouser, some of his best years are still ahead of him and I think that is why for most Liverpool fans this one would hurt the most if he is not here next season.
I don't know who is ultimately responsible for contract negotiations with the players at the club (Hughes?) but it's getting to a stage here where we need some intervention on these discussions. Henry needs to get involved, he's the head of the club, of course I have no evidence if he has or not. It's just this uncertainty around these three players is casting a dark cloud over our season despite flying high.
