Maybe its all part of the process of building a winning mentality i.e. avoiding defeat. Its easier to turn a virtually undefeated team into a team of consistent winners than a team which wins some and loses some.

What difference will that make? If you don't know now after 5 years whether Rafa is a great manager then you never will.

Agreed and of course I would always trust Rafa's judgement over Parry's on football matters. My point was though that it is simplistic to say that within a budget the manager will have complete control - there will always be a point where he will have to persuade people who know nothing of football to part with their money to pay for millions of £ worth of assets

I think it is naive to think that you can completely separate financial matters from footballing ones. If a manager is given complete freedom to spend within his allotted budget it would not be the end of the story - there would still be an argument about how big that budget should be. The manager would need to make a case based on the players he needs to buy and a decision would still need to be made about whether he really needs to buy player X for £20m or player Y for £10m.

I think a lot of people are missing the point about Rafa's rant. It was aimed at making Ferguson think twice before playing his mindgames. Whether it is effective or not is not dependent on the weekend's result but on whether Ferguson shuts up about Liverpool or whether he tries to ratchet up the pressure over the next few weeks.

I think it remains to be seen whether he fecked up or not. A lot of people couldn't understand his rant after Athens or the "coaching and training" my team press conference but they ended up in the long run entrenching his position not weakening it.
