To play devil's advocate though, if they really are a competing bid rather than just a means to finance, then surely this figure required to even get a leg in is more than the NESV offer

To draw some parallels with a recent business deal that made the news here in Oz this year - a certain high profile Aussie businessman made an announcement that he had agreed a record coal deal with a certain Chinese company (Govt backed), they came out the next day and denied any dealings or involvement. It was later clarified that the deal was being done via a different 3rd party company (also Chinese govt backed). Thus the originally named Chinese company was not incorrect in its denials of a deal and the Oz businessman wasn't entirely incorrect either as they were essentially the same client just acting through different companies (both essentially the Chinese Govt). Maybe this is the case here

As you mention, there have been several AFL players who I can think of that that have had as many as 3 reconstructions and still kept playing. The second area that they can take a graft from is the Patella tendon which provides a comparable recovery time to the hamstring tendon operation. I have had both types done and if anything I have had less ongoing problems with the knee that had the graft taken from the Patella tendon. The last option that you can see being used these days is they take grafts from the Achilles tendon of cadavers - the one that springs to mind is two of the Australian Freestyle Aerial Ski Jumpers (can't remember names). The strength of this graft is not meant to be as good but it somehow allows a greater speed of recovery.
