"We made him the man he is today"?! I half know what you're getting at but I can't agree. Michael's talent would've made him a success with or without Liverpool Football Club. Maybe we don't 'owe' him anything if you think the financial rewards cover any debt we might have to him, but I'd like to think that nearly a decade of goals and the odd trophy might mean that we remember him with fondness and look on him as one of our own. Half the problem with Michael is that he's not the most loveable of characters. He's not overburdened with charisma, is he? I'm sure he's a lovely lad but there's always been a tad too much of the automaton about him. That's really beside the point though. The reason we loved him as far as we did was he scored goals. Just to pick two at random, the two he scored away to Roma were an utter delight. One could easily construct an argument that they were instrumental in helping this club start to believe in itself as possible European power again. Now he's gone it falls to others to fulfil his role, and they will, but that in no way lessens what Michael did for us. So maybe we do owe him something after all; gratitude. No more, no less. He made his choice to leave as other wearers of the red shirt will in the future, but the trophies and goals will always be there.
