The biggest problem is, rather than supplementing a top notch first eleven with mid table backup players, our team has revolved around these mid table players; hence becoming a mid table team. The tactical naivety obviously exacerbates the problem, but if your players aren't good enough, they're not good enough. I remember when Houghton was asked, "What's the secret behind that great 80's team you played in?". HIs answer was, "There is no secret, we had 11 of the best players in the country playing week in, week out".
