Liddell’s last 1960 - Billy Liddell scored his 228th and final reds goal, becoming our oldest post-war goalscorer, aged 38 years 55 days. We beat Stoke City 5-1 in the Second Division at Anfield, with Jimmy Harrower adding a brace, and Roger Hunt and Dave Hickson also netting. Hickson was in fact on target for the fourth consecutive match, in which time he had struck six times in total. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh was officially appointed Manager. His contract awarded him £1,500 per year, with an additional annual £500 for expenses. He took charge of 232 reds games, winning just 81, and has the indignity of being our first boss to get the sack, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, and failing to lead us back to the promised land. A manc thrashing 2023 – We secured our record victory over Manchester United, thumping them 7-0 at Anfield, their joint worst ever defeat. Cody Gakpo gave us the lead shortly before the break, but the floodgates opened in the second half. Darwin Núñez headed in before Gakpo netted again. Mohamed Salah bagged a brace as he became our all-time top Premier League goalscorer. Núñez nodded in again, with Roberto Firmino completing the scoring. Fernando’s treble 2008 - Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 at Anfield, with Steven Gerrard completing the scoring. This was his second successive home treble. 2022 – Sadio Mané bagged the only goal of the Hammers’ League visit to Anfield. Crazy Horse OBE 1980 - Emlyn Hughes was presented with the OBE by Her Majesty the Queen. ‘Crazy Horse’ played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of the treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Sadly, he died in November 2004. More goal feasts against the Potters 1983 - We beat Stoke City 5-1 at Anfield again. Kenny netted his 300th senior club goal that day as Ian Rush reached a century of reds outings, with future Toffee Paul Bracewell on target for the visitors. 1955 - A Johnny Evans brace was not enough as we lost 4-2. This was our first home defeat to the Potters after nineteen previous wins and seven draws. Johnny King netted the first two of his five goals past us, with Harry Oscroft nabbing one of his six and Jack Malkin also on target. Mixed fortunes against the Hoops We faced Queens Park Rangers twice on this day in the 1980’s. 1986 - We were held 2-2 at Anfield in the second leg of our League Cup Semi-final, despite twice taking the lead on the night. Steve McMahon and Craig Johnston netted our goals, but Jan Mølby missed a penalty and Gary Gillespie and Ronnie Whelan both scored own goals. This put us out of the competition, as we had lost the first game 1-0 away from home. Bruce Grobbelaar was playing his 300th reds game. 1988 - We won at Loftus Road in the League, with John Barnes scoring the only goal of the game. This was our last outing on their controversial plastic playing surface. Alex Watson made the first of his nine senior appearances in this game. Happy birthdays 1988 - Damien Plessis was born in Neuville-aux-Bois, France. He signed in August 2007 from Olympique Lyonnais on a free transfer, making an impressive debut at Arsenal in the following April. He struck once in eight senior appearances, before being sold to Panathinaikos in August 2010. 1896 - Centre-half David Pratt was born in Lochore, Fife. He played 84 times for the reds after signing from Bradford City in January 1923, scoring just once and being known for his long throw-ins. He left Anfield to sign for Bury in November 1927. 1955 – Reserves keeper Bob Wardle was born in Halifax. He joined from Shrewsbury Town in a straight swap for Steve Ogrizovic in August 1982, but never made our first team, and was forced to retire through injury inside a year. 1986 - Former reserves keeper Paul Willis was born in Northern Ireland. He was released in the summer of 2006 after failing to break through to the first team, later playing for AFC Liverpool. 1993- Centre-back Stephen Sama was born in Bamenda, Cameroon. He signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund in July 2009. He never played a senior game, moving on to VfB Stuttgart in September 2014. 1955 – Scottish keeper Bill McCann died. He signed from Abercorn in May 1894, playing seventeen times before moving on the following March. Beginning and end 2005 - Scott Carson made his reds debut as we lost 1-0 at Newcastle United thanks to a goal from Laurent Robert. This was Graeme Souness’ first win over the reds as opposing Manager, at the eleventh attempt. 1977 - We also faced the Geordies when Steve Heighway grabbed the only goal of the game at Anfield. Phil Neal had a spot-kick saved by keeper Mike Mahoney. 1949 – We lost 2-1 at Chelsea despite going in at the break ahead through Jimmy Payne. Reds right-half Maurice Parry also played for Wales. 2014 – Daniel Sturridge scored the only goal of Roy Hodgson’s England’s friendly meeting with Denmark at Wembley. Mohamed Salah struck while winning his first cap as a Chelsea player in Egypt’s 2-0 friendly defeat of Bosnia-Herzegovina in Austria. Ex-red Raul Meireles netted as Portugal thumped Cameroon 5-1 in Leiria, while Gabriel Paletta made his senior debut for Italy as they lost 1-0 to Spain in Madrid. Sadio Mané struck his last goal as a Red Bull Salzburg player as Senegal drew 1-1 with Mali in a friendly in Dakar. Future red Andy Robertson also won his first cap in Scotland’s 1-0 win in Poland. Tom Ince won his first cap while on loan at Crystal Palace as England Under-21’s beat Wales 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier, with Nuri Şahin playing for Turkey for the final time as a Real Madrid player as Turkey beat Sweden 2-1 in Ankara. International beginning and end 1989 - Ronnie Rosenthal netted his first goal for Israel as a Standard de Liège player, the only goal of their World Cup qualifier against New Zealand in Tel-Aviv. 2013 – Jordon Ibe won his second and last cap for England Under-18’s in their 1-0 friendly defeat in Belgium. On the move 1996 - Future red Steve Finnan joined Notts County on loan from Birmingham City. He played twenty times, before signing permanently seven months later. 2015 – Former reds left-winger Albert Riera re-signed for his first club Real Club Deportivo Mallorca, having been sacked by Udinese four months earlier. He played just six times in this second spell. 2024 - Bournemouth announced the departure of Richard Hughes as their Technical Director at the end of the season. We always win in Wales 2003 - Goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen handed us a 2-0 win over Manchester United as we won the Worthington Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium, to claim our seventh League Cup with Jerzy Dudek being named man of the match. John Arne Riise was playing in his hundredth reds game, while Milan Baroš suffered the rare indignity of coming on from the bench and then later himself being substituted. Happy birthdays 1924 - Centre-half Laurie Hughes was born in Liverpool, just off Everton Road. He signed from Tranmere Rovers in February 1943 and made 326 reds appearances, netting just once. He helped us to the first post-war League title and the FA Cup Final three years later and was the first red to appear in the World Cup Finals later that year. 1994 - Lazar Marković was born in Čačak, Serbia. He signed from SL Benfica for £20m in July 2014, netting three times in 34 games before moving to Fulham on a free transfer in January 2019 after a series of loan spells away from Anfield. 1955 - Forward Kevin Kewley was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in March 1972 but only ever made one senior appearance for the reds, as a substitute for Terry McDermott against Middlesbrough at Anfield in February 1978. He was sold to Dallas Tornado for £18,000 on his 23rd birthday, playing there for five years before moving to indoor side Wichita Wings. He retired from playing in 1990 and was last heard of coaching youth soccer and working in Wichita, Kansas. 1892 - Full-back William Jenkinson was born in Golborne, Lancashire. He signed from South Liverpool in 1916 but only played thirteen times before moving to Wigan Borough in June 1921. 1989 – Ex-reserves midfielder Ray Putterill was born in Liverpool. He starred in the victorious 2007 FA Youth Cup campaign and started training at Melwood later that summer. He scored on his first appearance for the senior side, in a 3-0 friendly win at Crewe Alexandra in August 2007, and featured on the bench in our Carling Cup tie at Reading a month later. Luis at the treble 2013 – Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick in our 4-0 win at Wigan Athletic to take him past twenty League goals for the season, after Stewart Downing had headed in an early opener. Most recently 2022 – We beat Norwich City 2-1 in the FA Cup Fifth Round at Anfield on our way to claiming the trophy for the eighth time. Takumi Minamino struck twice in the first half. To and fro with the Toffees 1934 – Forward Tosh Johnson signed from Everton, with whom he had won the League and FA Cup. However, he was past his best by the time he arrived at Anfield. He played 38 times for us, notching eight times before joining Darwen in August 1936. 1927 – Inside-left Dick Forshaw was sold to Everton for £3,750. He won two League titles after joining the reds in July 1919, scoring an impressive 124 times in 288 games. He has the unique honour of being the only player ever to claim League championship medals with both Merseyside clubs, helping the Blues to the title in his first full season across the park. 1922 – Welsh forward Billy Matthews moved on to Bristol City. After eight goals in thirteen Wartime reds games, he signed on from Colwyn Bay in 1918, netting four times in nine senior outings. A Fab strike 2008 - Fábio Aurélio scored his first reds goal as we won 3-1 at Bolton Wanderers. We opened the scoring when keeper Jussi Jääskeläinen spilled a Steven Gerrard shot that was heading wide and knocked it into his own net. Ryan Babel also got on the scoresheet as he completed his first full ninety minutes in the League, while Avi Cohen’s son Tamir scored for the Trotters. Red centurions 2016 – Keeper Simon Mignolet played his hundredth League game for the reds as we gained some revenge for our League Cup Final defeat three days earlier by beating Manchester City 3-0 at Anfield. Adam Lallana and James Milner scored in the first half, with Roberto Firmino on target after the break. 1907 – We lost a top-flight encounter 1-0 at Manchester City’s old Hyde Road ground, with Ned Doig saving a penalty from George Dorsett. 1968 - Tommy Smith made his 150th consecutive reds appearance, in a 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Roger Hunt bagged our goal, with Derek Dougan netting one of his four against the reds. 1985 – John Wark netted the only goal of Nottingham Forest’s visit to Anfield from the spot as Ian Rush played his 200th game for the club. Back to the Cottage 2002 - We beat Fulham 2-0 in what was billed as our last ever match at Craven Cottage, thanks to goals from Nicolas Anelka and Jari Litmanen. The game will also be remembered for a stunning last-ditch tackle from Stéphane Henchoz to deny Steve Marlet a goal. Stephen Wright played his 21st and final senior reds game that day. 1957 - We also won there in a Second Division match, with John Evans bagging his 53rd and final reds goal and Billy Liddell also on target in our 2-1 victory. Elton John’s cousin Roy Dwight scored the last of his four goals against us. Anfield trebles 1898 - Derby County trounced us 5-1 at Anfield in an FA Cup Third Round replay, with three from John Boag, one of only two FA Cup hat-tricks we have conceded and the first of his six strikes past ud. Frank Becton bagged our consolation from the spot as forwards Dan Cunliffe and Abe Hartley, and centre-half Joe McQue all played their final reds games. Beginnings and ends 1986 - We won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur live on TV with Steve Perryman playing his final Spurs game, his 655th in the League. Ian Rush bagged his twentieth goal of the season in the final minute, with Jan Mølby also netting past ex-red Ray Clemence after Chris Waddle had given the home side an early lead. 1935 – Forward Sam English netted his 26th and final reds goal as we lost 3-2 at Grimsby Town in the top flight with Gordon Hodgson also on target. Pat Glover struck twice for the Mariners, with Ben Burley also on target. 1913 - Scottish centre-half Robert Neill died. He stood at only five foot four inches but won five full international caps. He signed from Hibernian in May 1896 after a loan spell, netting three times in 27 reds games before joining Rangers in April 1897, with whom he won the League and Cup. 1912 - Forward Billy Lacey made his reds bow in a 1-1 League draw at home to Middlesbrough, with Tom Miller grabbing our goal, his first of 56 for the club. European Cup defeats 1977 - We lost 1-0 at Saint-Étienne in the Third Round first leg, but of course famously fought back to qualify for the Semi-finals in the Anfield return. Dominique Bathenay volleyed the only goal of the game, after Steve Heighway had hit the post at the other end. 1983 - We were less fortunate, losing 2-0 at Widzew Lódz at the same stage before only winning 3-2 at Anfield. Bruce Grobbelaar was culpable for the first goal as he dropped a cross. David N’Gog, future red Mamadou Sakho and ex-red Mikel San José also featured for the Under-21’s on the same day, with Chris Mavinga playing for France Under-19’s. 2012 – Mohamed Salah played in Egypt’s goalless friendly draw with DR Congo in Qatar. 1901 - Right-half Maurice Parry became our first Welsh international, in their 1-1 draw with Scotland in Wrexham, with ex-reds half-back Barney Battles appearing for the Scots. 1903 - Parry won his seventh cap in their 2-1 defeat by England in Portsmouth, again in the British International Championships. On the move 1998 - Nigel Spackman resigned as Manager of Sheffield United after seven months in charge, following the sale of several players for financial reasons. 1995 - David Burrows signed for Coventry City from Everton for £1.1m. He played 130 times as the Sky Blues held their own in the top flight. 2000 - Reserves striker Jon Newby joined Crewe Alexandra on loan. He failed to score in six first-team appearances. 2012 – Defender Stephen Wright signed for Wrexham, notching once in 39 outings before moving on to Welsh Premier League side Aberystwyth Town in September 2014. 2020 - Daniel Sturridge received a four-month worldwide ban for breaching betting rules, having his contract with Trabzonspor terminated by mutual consent on the same day. Cup number ten 2024 – We won the League Cup for the tenth time after beating Chelsea 1-0 after extra time at Wembley. We were forced into an early change when Ryan Gravenberch was injured, before ex-red Raheem Sterling had a goal ruled out for offside. Cody Gakpo hit the woodwork before skipper Virgil van Dijk had a goal chalked off for another offside. The reds on the field became progressively younger as substitutes were made, with van Dijk heading in a very late winner as penalties loomed. This was the first time we had used six substitutions in a game, with an additional one permitted in extra time. The start of another treble 2001 - We won the Worthington Cup in the first domestic final to be played outside England, at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. On our way to Wembley 1987 - We made it through to the Littlewoods Challenge Cup Final, as the League Cup was then known, by beating Southampton 3-0 in the Semi-final second leg at Anfield. Nigel Spackman made his reds bow, while Ronnie Whelan, Kenny Dalglish and Jan Mølby were all on target in the second half. A real victory 2009 – Yossi Benayoun headed the only goal of our Champions League round of sixteen first leg match at Real Madrid. Steven Gerrard completed the scoring with his 33rd goal in continental competition to surpass Alan Shearer as Britain’s all-time leading scorer in European football. 2016 – James Milner’s early penalty was enough to secure victory over Augsburg 1907 e. He bagged twenty goals in 44 reds games after signing from Stoke City for £12,000 in December 1952. He returned to his homeland to sign for Bangor City in January 1955. Fred Hopkin, Tom Bromilow and Gordon Hodgson netted our goals.
