Red trebles
2000 - Michael Owen scored a first half hat-trick past former team-mate David James as we defeated Aston Villa 3-1 at Anfield. He therefore became our first ever player to score two first-half hat-tricks in League games. Steve Stone bagged Villa’s late consolation.

1965 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt netted a treble in our 5-1 win at West Ham United, after Gordon Milne and Ian Callaghan had opened the scoring. Martin Peters scored for the Irons, one of his fourteen goals past us, with all the goals coming before the hour mark.
1986 - We also thumped the Hammers on their home turf when substitute Kenny Dalglish struck twice in a 5-2 victory, with Ronnie Whelan, Craig Johnston and Ian Rush also on target. Future reds first-team coach Kevin Keen made his senior debut for the Hammers in this game. Ray Stewart put the home side in front inside ten minutes, with Tony Cottee bagging the first of his eight goals against the reds.

Macca signs on
1985 - Steve McMahon signed from Aston Villa for £375,000, becoming the first arrival direct from Villa Park. He was Kenny Dalglish’s first signing, winning three League titles, the FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Manchester City in December 1991 after fifty goals in 277 games.

Births and deaths
1892 - Scottish keeper Ken Campbell was born in Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Cambuslang Rangers in May 1911 and took over from Sam Hardy in the reds goal, playing 142 times including the 1914 FA Cup Final, before being replaced after the war by the great Elisha Scott. On exactly the same day, outside-left Albert Pearson was born in Tynemouth. He netted four times in 51 reds games after signing from Port Vale in March 1919, returning there two years later.
1988 - Jimmy Ryan was born in Maghull. The central midfielder joined League Two outfit Accrington Stanley in August 2008, having featured in both of our recent victorious FA Youth Cup campaigns, but failed to break into the first–team squad.

1948 – Half-back Bill Keech died. He played just six Second Division games in late 1895, having signed from Barnsley St. Peter’s that October, helping us to claim the title that season. He later played as a forward for Leicester Fosse, before returning to the half-back line with Queens Park Rangers’ first professional team in the Southern League.
2003 – Inside-forward Harold Jones died. He joined the reds in January 1952, but only made one senior appearance in a 5-1 thumping at Anfield by Preston North End in September 1953. He moved on to Rhyl in June 1954.

A goalscoring debut
1902 - Inside-right George Livingstone scored on his reds bow as we beat Blackburn Rovers 5-2 at Anfield in our first game of the season, with Sam Raybould and Jack Cox both grabbing braces. Inside-forward Edgar Chadwick also debuted in this game, with Walter Whittaker nabbing two of his six goals against the reds.

Four against
1913 - Danny Shea scored four of his ten goals against the reds as Blackburn Rovers thumped us 6-2 at Ewood Park, with Tom Miller netting both our goals and Bob Ferguson missing a penalty for the reds. Eddie Latheron also scored for the home side with Billy Bradshaw converting from the spot.

Red centurions
1954 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 200th League game for the reds as we lost a Second Division fixture 3-0 at Bristol Rovers. Geoff Bradford netted the first three of his five goals past us.
1950 – George Kay took charge of the reds for the 300th time in the League as we defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in L4 with Albert Stubbins and Jack Balmer on the scoresheet.
1909 – We won 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers with Jack Parkinson nabbing a brace, including his fiftieth League goal for the reds.

Managerial moves
1989 - Mark Lawrenson was appointed Manager of Fourth Division Peterborough United. They finished ninth at the end of that season, and he stayed in the job for fourteen months, before being sacked.
2004 - Graeme Souness resigned as Blackburn Rovers boss after four and a half years in charge. He took up the vacant managerial post at Newcastle United the following week, but was sacked after seventeen months at St. James’ Park.

Out with the old, in with the new
1995 - John Barnes won his 79th and final cap in England’s goalless friendly draw with Colombia at Wembley. He had scored eleven times for his country. Jamie Redknapp made his senior international debut in the same game, while Nick Barmby won his first cap as a Middlesbrough player. Steve McManaman also played.

On the same day, Markus Babbel grabbed his only international goal as Germany beat Georgia 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Nuremberg. Fellow future red Christian Ziege netted his first goal for the German senior side in the same game. Ex-red István Kozma won his fortieth and final cap for Hungary as they lost a qualifier 2-0 in Turkey. Also in action that day were Ian Rush, ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal and future reds Stéphane Henchoz, Øyvind Leonhardsen, Jari Litmanen and Gary McAllister, with Roy Hodgson managing Switzerland.

Vlad on target again and again
2003 - Vladimír Šmicer struck in his third consecutive Czech Republic game for the second time, with clubmate Milan Baroš also on target in their 3-1 European Championships qualifying win in Belarus.
2002 - Milan bagged a brace with Vlad also scoring in their 5-0 friendly defeat of FR Yugoslavia in Prague, despite having broken a toe in the first minute of the game.
1997 - Future red Šmicer also netted for his country as they won a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in the Faroe Islands.
1998 - Šmicer grabbed the only goal of a Euro 2000 qualifier in the same country, with future reds clubmate Patrik Berger also playing. Meanwhile, Baroš played for the Under-18’s as they beat Hungary 3-1 in a tournament game in Yugoslavia, with Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Vegard Heggem both appearing as Norway lost 3-1 to Latvia in a European Championships qualifier in Oslo.

1994 - Future red Patrik Berger netted in the Czech Republic’s 6-1 European Championships qualifying thumping of Malta in Bazaly. Roy Hodgson managed a Switzerland side that included future red Stéphane Henchoz to a 1-0 friendly win over the United Arab Emirates in Sion. Robbie Fowler, Jamie Redknapp and future red Nick Barmby all featured for England Under-21’s as they were held to a goalless draw by France in a European Championships qualifier in Leicester.
2011 – Future red Xherdan Shaqiri bagged a treble as Switzerland beat Bulgaria 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Basel, with ex-red Nikolay Mihaylov in goal for the visitors. Meanwhile, Christian Benteke scored while winning his last Under-21’s cap as a Royal Standard de Liège player in Belgium’s 4-1 qualifying win over Azerbaijan in Antwerp. Fellow future red Fabio Borini scored past Péter Gulácsi as Italy Under-21’s won 3-0 in a qualifier in Hungary.

Disappointment on Teesside
We have twice visited Ayresome Park on this day in history, without securing a win.
1930 - Robert Done scored from the spot with Gordon Hodgson and Dick Edmed also on target in a 3-3 top-flight draw. Bobby Bruce bagged one of his five goals past us, with Freddie Warren and Billy Pease also on the scoresheet as right-half Tom Morrison reached a century of reds outings.
1958 - Jimmy Harrower nabbed our consolation as Middlesbrough won a Second Division encounter 2-1, thanks to a Brian Clough brace, two of his ten goals against the reds.

International firsts
2003 - Fernando Torres won his first senior international cap as they won a friendly 3-0 in Portugal, with fellow future red Xabi Alonso also featuring. On the same day, Andriy Voronin made his first appearance for Ukraine as a 1. FC Köln player in their goalless Euro 2004 qualifier with Northern Ireland in Donetsk.
2016 – Mohamed Salah played his first game for Egypt since moving permanently to Roma as they lost a friendly 1-0 in South Africa, with captain Ragnar Klavan playing for Estonia for the first time since arriving at Anfield as they were thumped 5-0 in a Wo5ld Cup qualifier in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Ex-red Luis Suárez converted a penalty as Uruguay thumped Paraguay 4-0 in Montevideo, while Philippe Coutinho, Marko Grujić, Ragnar Klavan, Harry Wilson, Gini Wijnaldum, future reds Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota, Ozan Kabak, Kostas Tsimikas and Virgil van Dijk, and ex-reds Péter Gulácsi, Javier Mascherano, Krisztián Németh and Brad Smith all also featured for their countries.

2015 – Future red Wijnaldum also played for his country, as the Netherlands lost a European Championships qualifier 3-0 in Turkey. Salah won his first cap while on loan at Roma as Egypt won a World Cup qualifier 5-2 in Chad. Christian Benteke won his first cap as a red as Belgium won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Cyprus, with Divock Origi also featuring. Meanwhile, future red Joël Matip played for Cameroon in a 1-0 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying win in Gambia and ex-red captained Algeria to a 3-1 qualifying win in Lesotho.
2023 – Jayden Danns debuted for England Under-18’s as they lost 2-0 to France in the Limoges International Tournament.

A good day for Mark
1995 - Mark Kennedy won his first cap for the Republic of Ireland as they lost 3-1 in a Euro ’96 qualifier in Austria, with Phil Babb and ex-red Ray Houghton also playing.
1997 - He netted his first goal as the Irish won a World Cup qualifier 4-2 in Iceland. Jason McAteer and ex-red Steve Staunton also featured.

Crouchie on target again
2006 - Peter Crouch scored in his third consecutive England game for the second time as they won 1-0 in the FYR Macedonia, taking him to eleven international strikes in 2006, a national record for a calendar year. Steven Gerrard won his fiftieth cap in the same game, with future red Stewart Downing also featuring. Daniel Agger, Xabi Alonso, Luis García, Sami Hyypiä, future reds Christian Poulsen, Nuri Şahin, Martin Škrtel, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin and ex-red Jari Litmanen also played in Euro 2008 qualifiers that day, with Roy Hodgson taking charge of Finland and future red Philipp Degen appearing in a friendly tournament.

Future red Yossi Benayoun netted as Israel thumped Andorra 4-1 in another qualifier, while Dirk Kuyt bagged his first goal as a reds player in the Netherlands’ 3-0 defeat of Belarus, with future reds Ryan Babel and John Heitinga also in action. 2013 – Rickie Lambert bagged his final goal as a Southampton player, with skipper Steven Gerrard also on target as Roy Hodgson’s England beat Moldova 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley. Luis Suárez bagged a brace, including a penalty, as Uruguay won 2-1 in Peru. Milan off the mark
2011 - Milan Jovanović struck his first goal for Serbia as a Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht player in their 3-1 defeat of Faroe Islands in a Euro 2012 qualifier in Belgrade. St. Michael loses a record
2003 - Everton’s Wayne Rooney became England’s youngest ever goalscorer, beating Michael Owen’s record as they won 2-1 in a Euro 2004 qualifier in the FYR Macedonia. Emile Heskey, Owen and ex-red David James all also featured. Also in international action that day were Jerzy Dudek, Sami Hyypiä and John Arne Riise and future reds Craig Bellamy, Yossi Benayoun, Mark González, Paul Jones, Ragnar Klavan and Andriy Voronin, while Bolo Zenden was winning his first cap while on loan at Middlesbrough, and 47th in all.

Thumping the Wearsiders
1922 - We beat Sunderland 5-1 at Anfield thanks to a Harry Chambers brace and goals from Dick Johnson and Donald McKinlay, with Dick Forshaw netting in his hundredth reds game while Charlie Buchan bagged one of his 21 goals against the reds.

Beating the Mancs
1893 – Hugh McQueen netted the only goal of our Anfield friendly meeting with Newton Heath, as Manchester United were then known.

Disappointment against the Baggies
1920 – We were held to a goalless draw by West Bromwich Albion in a top-flight encounter at Anfield. Inside-forward Tom Miller played his 146th and last game for the club.
1976 - We lost 1-0 in a League Cup Second Round replay at The Hawthorns, with Irish midfielder Mick Martin bagging the decisive goal.

Other international reds
1989 - John Aldridge won his final cap as a reds player as the Republic of Ireland held West Germany to a 1-1 draw in a friendly at Lansdowne Road. Clubmates Steve Staunton and Ronnie Whelan both also played. John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Gary Gillespie, Glenn Hysén, Steve McMahon, Steve Nicol, Ian Rush and future red Dean Saunders were all in World Cup qualifying action that day.
1997 - Future red Jari Litmanen netted in Finland’s 2-1 World Cup qualifying win in Switzerland while winning his fiftieth cap, with future red Stéphane Henchoz on the losing side. Stig Inge Bjørnebye and future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege also played for their countries that day.
2017 – Ex-red Luis Suárez played as Uruguay won a World Cup qualifier 2-1 in Paraguay.

2018 – Ex-red Ryan Babel won his fiftieth cap for the Netherlands as they beat Peru 2-1, with Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum also featuring. Adam Lewis made his debut for England Under-20’s, with Dominic Solanke and ex-red Joe Allen also playing for their countries that day, while ex-red Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-20’s.
2019 – Gini Wijnaldum scored as the Netherlands beat Germany 4-2 in a European Championships qualifier in Hamburg, with Virgil van Dijk captaining the side and Ryan Babel winning his first cap as a Galatasaray player as Rhian Brewster debuted for England Under-21’s in their 3-2 win in a European Championships qualifier in Turkey. Dejan Lovren bagged his last goal for Croatia as a red in their 4-0 qualifying win in Slovakia. Caoimhín Kelleher, Divock Origi, Andy Robertson, Harry Wilson and ex-reds Joe Allen and Ragnar Klavan all also played for their countries that day, with Steve Clarke taking charge of Scotland.

2013 – Lazar Marković won his first cap after moving to SL Benfica as Serbia were held to a 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw by Croatia in Belgrade, with future red Dejan Lovren playing for the visitors.
2014 - Carl Medjani played for Algeria for the first time since joining Trabzonspor as they beat Ethiopia 2-1 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Addis Ababa.
2018 – Future red Cody Gakpo debuted for the Dutch Under-20’s as they were held to a goalless draw in an Elite League group game in Portugal.

2019 - Harvey Elliott won his first cap for England Under-17’s since moving to Anfield, as they thumped Finland 5-0 in a friendly in Poland with Jarell Quansah also in action. On the same day, future red Fábio Carvalho played for England Under-18’s for the first time in their 3-2 victory over Australia Under-17’s in Hinckley. Meanwhile, future red Mateusz Musiałowski won his only cap for Poland Under-17’s in their 2-1 defeat of Georgia, with Kamil Grabara and future red Ryan Gravenberch also featuring for their countries.
2021 – Leighton Clarkson debuted for England Under-20’s as they thumped Romania 6-1 in an Elite League game at St. George’s Park. On the same day, James Balagizi appeared for England Under-19’s in their 1-1 friendly draw in Germany while ex-red Bernard Diomède managed France Under-20’s in a 2-1 defeat by Norway Under-19’s in Clairefontaine-en-Yvelines.

2002 – Future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-19’s as they beat Yugoslavia 2-1.
2005 – He was booked as the Under-21’s were held to a 1-1 draw by Belarus in a European Championships qualifier in Borisov.

First and last goals
2008 - Martin Škrtel scored his first goal as a reds player as Slovakia beat Northern Ireland 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Bratislava. Joe Cole bagged a brace from off the bench, his final England goals as a Chelsea player, as they beat Andorra 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Barcelona. Ex-reds Emile Heskey, David James and future reds Stewart Downing and Glen Johnson also featured. Meanwhile, Yossi Benayoun netted while skippering Israel in their 2-2 draw with Switzerland in Tel-Aviv.
2020 – Neco Williams struck for Wales for the first time, the only goal of their UEFA Nations League group games against Bulgaria in Cardiff. Thiago Alcântara appeared for Spain for the last time before moving to Anfield as they thumped Ukraine 4-0 in Madrid, with future reds Ozan Kabak and Dominik Szoboszlai and ex-reds Emre Can and Péter Gulácsi also playing in the same competition.

Youngsters on target for their countries
Daniel Sjölund struck for Finland Under-21’s in European Championships qualifiers on this day in consecutive years.
2002 - He netted in their 2-1 defeat of Wales in Valkeakoski.
2003 - He bagged the only goal of their game in Azerbaijan.

2012 - Jonjo Shelvey scored his first goal for England Under-21’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Azerbaijan, with future red Steven Caulker nabbing his second and last strike at this level. Jordan Henderson skippered a side that also included Martin Kelly, with ex-red Tom Ince winning his first cap at this level. Samed Yeşil struck his first two goals for Germany Under-19’s while winning his first cap at this level as a reds player in a 3-1 friendly defeat of England in Hamburg, with Raheem Sterling winning his only cap at this level and Adam Morgan also playing. Péter Gulácsi and Danny Wilson also featured in Under-21’s action that day.

2002 - Florent Sinama-Pongolle struck his first goal for France Under-21’s, the only one of their qualifier in Cyprus. He was winning his second cap, as were fellow reds Alou Diarra and Anthony Le Tallec. Chris Kirkland and future reds Xabi Alonso, Ragnar Klavan, Paul Konchesky, Jermaine Pennant, Pepe Reina, Albert Riera and Fernando Torres also played for their Under-21’s sides that day, with future red Alberto Aquilani featuring for Italy Under-19’s.
2005 - Ramon Calliste won his first cap for Wales Under-21’s as a reds player, having a goal disallowed as they lost 3-2 in a European Championships qualifier in Poland. Meanwhile, Anthony Le Tallec scored in his third consecutive Under-21’s game, converting a penalty as France beat the Republic of Ireland 2-1 in a qualifier in Cork. John Welsh won his last cap at this level as a reds player as England drew 1-1 in another qualifier with Germany in Mainz, with Scott Carson and future reds Alberto Aquilani, James Milner and Gary O’Neil also playing for the Under-21’s.

Back to Merseyside
1994 - David Burrows signed for Everton from West Ham United on a free transfer, just a year after leaving Anfield. He only played 23 times in his one season with the Toffees, before moving on again to Birmingham City.
2013 - Neil Critchley was appointed Under-18’s Coach at the Academy. He moved up to the Under-23’s, leaving to take over as Head Coach of Blackpool last March.

1983 – Southampton held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Ian Rush netted before Mick Mills equalised late on with a free-kick from close to the touchline.
1980 – We drew 1-1 at Birmingham City with Kenny Dalglish on target.
