Off the bench for the first time
1965 - Utility player Geoff Strong became our first ever League substitute, netting after coming on for full-back Chris Lawler in our 1-1 top-flight draw at home to West Ham United. Gerry Byrne made his 200th League appearance in this fixture while Geoff Hurst bagged on of his nine strikes against us.

A win at Goodison
2001 - After Kevin Campbell put the home side ahead, the last of his four goals against the reds, we stormed back to beat Everton 3-1, thanks to a Steven Gerrard pile-driver, a Michael Owen penalty and a John Arne Riise strike that inspired two songs. Thomas Radzinski made his debut for the home side as a substitute for future red Abel Xavier.
1934 - We also played across the park, losing 1-0 courtesy of a late Dixie Dean header, one of his nineteen derby goals.

A nap hand for John
1954 - Forward John Evans scored all five reds goals in our 5-3 Second Division defeat of Bristol Rovers at Anfield. Peter Hooper bagged the first two of his seven goals past us, with Harry Bamford also on target.

Debutants
1956 - Half-back Johnny Wheeler made his reds bow as we lost 2-0 at home to Stoke City in our Second Division fixture, with Johnny King netting one of his five goals past the reds and George Kelly also on target.
1937 - We also entertained the Potters, with Alf Hanson on target twice in a 3-0 victory, including a penalty, and Berry Nieuwenhuys also netting.

1979 - Israeli defender Avi Cohen made his debut in our 1-1 draw at Leeds United, with David Johnson reaching a century of reds games. Terry McDermott struck our goal in what was our 3,000th League game.
1973 - Forward Derek Brownbill played his only reds game. We were losing 1-0 at Birmingham City to a Bob Latchford strike, one of his five goals against us, when Brownbill was replaced by Brian Hall, who grabbed our late equaliser as the game ended all square.
1958 – Wing-half Bobby Campbell made his reds bow in our 2-0 Second Division defeat at Sheffield United.

Paddy’s first strikes
1996 - Patrik Berger bagged the first two of his 35 reds goals as we won 3-0 at Leicester City, having come on as a half-time substitute for Stan Collymore. Michael Thomas also hit the net as we topped the table for the first time that season.

Mo foiled
2021 - Fikayo Tomori deflected a cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold into his own net to give us an early lead in our UEFA Champions League encounter with AC Milan at Anfield. Mohamed Salah had a penalty saved before Ante Rebić and Brahim Díaz gave the visitors a half-time lead. However, Salah and Jordan Henderson both struck after the break to secure a 3-2 victory as we opened our group campaign with the first of six wins.

Pepe to the rescue
2007 - Pepe Reina saved a penalty from Kanu as we held Portsmouth to a goalless draw at Fratton Park, with Andriy Voronin hitting the bar late on.

Hendersons incoming
1893 - Centre-forward David Henderson signed for the reds from Kings Park in Stirling. He was only at Anfield for fourteen months but netted twelve goals in 23 games as we won the Second Division title.
2014 - Jordan Henderson was named as the club’s official vice-captain, following the departure of Daniel Agger.

1905 – Left-half Jim Bradley signed from Stoke, helping us to claim the League title in his first season and scoring eight times in 186 reds appearances before joining Reading in June 1911.
1965 - Keeper John Ogston signed from his hometown club Aberdeen for £10,000. He played over 200 games for the Dons but only appeared once for the reds. He joined Doncaster Rovers on loan in August 1968, before moving there permanently in July 1969.

European fortunes
Our four continental ties on this day in history have ended in three wins and a defeat.
2004 - We beat AS Monaco 2-0 at Anfield in the group stage of the Champions League with strike partners Djibril Cissé and Milan Baroš both on the scoresheet.
1998 - We won our opening UEFA Cup match 3-0 at Slovakian side Košice, thanks to goals from Patrik Berger, Karl-Heinz Riedle and Michael Owen.

1970 - We won 1-0 at home to Hungarians Ferencvárosi in the Fairs Cup, thanks to a Bobby Graham strike.
1971 - We lost 2-1 in the opening game of our European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign at Servette FC Genève, with Chris Lawler nabbing our late consolation and the reds missing a host of chances. However, we won the Anfield return 2-0 to progress.

Five each against the Baggies
Our first two games on this day in history both came against West Bromwich Albion, with the home side winning 5-0 each time.
1894 - We lost at Stoney Lane, with winger Patrick Gordon playing his thirtieth and last reds game.
1900 - We won by the same score at Anfield, thanks to a Sam Raybould brace and goals from Archie Goldie, Johnny Walker and Tommy Robertson.

Facing the Mackems
We have played Sunderland four times in the top flight on this day in history, without securing a victory.
2012 – We were held 1-1 at the Stadium Of Light when Steven Fletcher scored for the home side before Luis Suárez equalised past Simon Mignolet, with Glen Johnson also hitting the bar.
1984 - Paul Walsh grabbed our goal as we were held to a 1-1 draw.
1951 - Billy Liddell and Kevin Baron were on target in a 2-2 draw. Dickie Davis bagged one of his seven strikes against the reds, and Len Shackleton netting one of his five past us.
1906 - Joe Hewitt struck as we lost 2-1 at Anfield. George Bridgett and Billy Hogg each netted one of their five goals past us.

Beating the Addicks
1987 - We saw off Charlton Athletic 3-2 at Anfield. Garth Crooks put the visitors in front with the last of his four goals past us. John Aldridge equalised from the spot two minutes later, but Colin Walsh gave the Londoners a second shock lead with a thirty-yard free-kick. Alan Hansen then headed in his first goal in more than three years, his fourteenth and final strike for the club. Steve McMahon struck the winner just two minutes later.

Management moves
2009 - Titi Camara was sacked as Manager of Guinea after just three months in charge, while Julian Dicks was appointed boss of Grays Athletic, remaining in charge until last May.
2008 - Steve Clarke took over as first-team coach at West Ham United, working with Gianfranco Zola. He remained at Upton Park until June 2010.

Youngsters starting out
2014 – Future reds keeper Kamil Grabara made his debut for Poland Under-16’s as they thrashed Northern Ireland 5-0 in Dungannon.
2010 – Future red Samed Yeşil won his first cap for Germany Under-17’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat of the Netherlands.

Young Nando on target
2001 - Future red Fernando Torres scored for Spain Under-17’s as they beat Oman 2-1 in the World Championship Finals in Trinidad. However, they lost their next two games to crash out at the group stage. Fellow future red Javier Mascherano also played as Argentina drew 2-2 with Burkina Faso as they went on to top the same group.

Cloughie starts out
1984 - Nigel Clough joined Nottingham Forest from Heanor Town on a free transfer. He went on to score 130 goals for Forest in 400 appearances, before joining the reds for £2.275m in June 1993.

Moving on
2023 – Ex-reds forward Mario Balotelli re-signed for Adana Demirspor, scoring seven times in sixteen appearances in his second spell with the Turkish side.
2022 – Centre-forward Andy Carroll re-signed for Reading after a previous two-month spell. He struck nine times in 32 games in his first full season with the Royals.
2020 – Ex-reds centre-half Daniel Ayala signed for Blackburn Rovers, playing ten times in his first season at Ewood Park. On the same day, midfielder Charlie Adam joined Dundee, netting eleven times in 65 games in his two seasons at Dens Park.
2015 – Left-winger Albert Riera signed for Zavrč in Slovenia. He terminated his contract the following January after one goal in twelve League outings.

2014 - Nicolas Anelka signed for Indian Super League side Mumbai City, netting twice in seven outings. He returned to the club the following July as Player/Manager.
2009 - Falkirk-born reserves midfielder Ryan Flynn converted a loan move back to his hometown club into a permanent switch. He was awarded with a full-time contract at Melwood in the summer of 2006 having impressed in the previous season’s victorious FA Youth Cup campaign, including notching a goal in the Final.

Births and deaths
1993 – Ex-reserves right-winger Toni Silva was born in Guinea-Bissau. He moved to Melwood in 2009 after spending time in the SL Benfica and Chelsea youth set-ups, but left for Barnsley on a free transfer in July 2012.
1978 - Former youth keeper Roy Naylor was born in Liverpool. He never even made our first-team squad, although he featured in both legs of our victorious FA Youth Cup Final in 1996. He joined Clydebank in December 1998, for whom he only played once, and was last heard of working as a postman in Ellesmere Port.
2001 – Forward Jack Bearne was born in Nottingham. He made his senior bow in our EFL Cup Quarter-final defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019.

1915 – The wife of the club’s first Manager, William Barclay, died in Lancaster Hospital. Emily had been married to him since June 1878.
2011 – The funeral of centre-half Laurie Hughes took place at Thornton Crematorium. He signed from Tranmere Rovers in February 1943 and made 326 reds appearances, netting just once. He helped us to the first post-war League title and the FA Cup Final three years later and was the first red to appear in the World Cup Finals later that year.
1916 – Ex-reds outside-right’s Hugh McQueen's son Hugh Jr. died in First World War action in France.

Other reds games
2018 – We secured our fifth straight League victory from the start of the season when we beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Wembley Stadium, dominating the match. Gini Wijnaldum headed in for his first away League goal in England, with Roberto Firmino doubling the lead after the break. Érik Lamela bagged an injury-time consolation.
1962 – Roger Hunt netted as Ipswich Town held us to s 1-1 draw at Anfield.
1952 – We lost 3-1 at White Hart Lane, with Bryan Williams on target for the reds, although we remained top of the table. Amateur player Vic Groves bagged a brace for the home side, with centre-forward Len Duquemin also scoring.

1948 – Arsenal won 1-0 in L4 with Reg Lewis scoring one of his five goals against the reds.
1928 – We drew 2-2 at Manchester United despite Gordon Hodgson and Dick Edmed each giving us the lead.
1924 – We lost 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers.
1923 – We beat Preston North End 3-1 at Anfield. Donald McKinlay scored our goal, with Ted Harper bagging the first of his five past us and Johnny McIntyre netting twice.

2006 – Future red Astrit Ajdarević featured for Sweden Under-17’s as they drew 2-2 with Austria in a European Championships qualifier in Greece.
2015 - Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-17’s as they lost a friendly 1-0 to the Czech Republic.
