A European treble
1984 - John Wark bagged a hat-trick as we beat Polish champions Lech Poznań 4-0 at Anfield to progress to the Second Round of the European Cup 5-0 on aggregate, having also scored our goal in the away leg. Paul Walsh was also on target that night.

Debutants
1903 - Jack Parkinson scored on his reds debut in our 2-1 win at Small Heath, with left-half George Fleming also on the scoresheet, scoring from the rebound after his own spot-kick was saved.
1926 - We also beat Birmingham City, as they were by then known, in the top flight with Vic Wright and Phil Taylor netting in our 2-0 win at Anfield.

Euro disappointment
2007 - Olympique de Marseille became the first French side to win at Anfield, at the tenth attempt, when they won 1-0 in a Champions League group game, with Eric Gerets in charge of the visitors for the first time and ex-reds Djibril Cissé and Bolo Zenden both featuring. The reds produced a very lacklustre performance as Mathieu Valbuena grabbed the only goal. “That could be the worst performance of my time here”, Rafael Benítez said. “It was very bad, a very bad game.”
2018 – We lost 1-0 in the opening game of our UEFA Champions League group at SSC Napoli, with Lorenzo Insigne bagging the late winner.

For Bill
1981 - A minute’s silence was held before our First Division meeting with Swansea City at Anfield in honour of Bill Shankly, who had died four days earlier. Terry McDermott netted both our goals from the spot as we came from two goals down to draw 2-2. The Swans were managed by ex-red John Toshack, who was wearing a Liverpool shirt in Shanks’ honour. Leighton James converted a penalty with Bob Latchford netting the last of his five goals past us.

1959 - We also faced Swansea, when they were Town rather than City, losing by the odd goal in nine at the Vetch Field, with our goals coming from a Jimmy Melia penalty, Roger Hunt, and a Ronnie Moran free-kick after we had initially taken the lead through a Malcolm Kennedy own goal. We went 3-1 down inside 22 minutes thanks to goals from Peter Davies, the last of Len Allchurch’s five goals against the reds and Colin Webster, but fought back to level the game. The eventual winner, Brayley Reynolds’ second goal, who eventually netted seven goals past us, came just two minutes from time. Reds keeper Doug Rudham suffered from double vision throughout the match.

Happy birthdays
1984 - Anthony Le Tallec was born in Hennebont. The young Frenchman made just 32 senior reds appearances and scored only once, signing for Le Mans UC 72 in June 2008, having been sent out on loan from Anfield four times.
1929 - Outside-right Tony McNamara was born in Liverpool. He signed from Everton for £4,000 in December 1957 after spending seven seasons across Stanley Park, but only played ten first-team games before joining Crewe Alexandra in July 1958.
1979 - Ex-reserves midfielder Layton Maxwell was born in St. Asaph in Wales. He only made one first-team appearance, scoring in front of the Kop in our 4-2 League Cup defeat of Hull City in September 1999.

Seven on the bounce for the Blues
1914 - Everton won in the League for the seventh consecutive season at Anfield, this time 5-0 - a record run for any club, with Bobby Parker bagging three of his eight goals against us, including one from the spot, with Joe Clennell adding the first two of his seven strikes past us. Keeper Kenny Campbell had to leave the pitch after one minute when the referee spotted he was wearing a blue jersey! Defender Phil Bratley made his reds debut in this game which remains our record home derby defeat.

1908 – We went down 1-0 at Anfield with George Barlow scoring.
1896 – We lost 2-1 at Goodison when Jimmy Ross nabbed our consolation. Alfred Milward and future red Abe Hartley had put the Blues in front.

Most recently
2021 – Manchester City held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield, with Sadio Mané putting us ahead after the break before Phil Foden equalised. Mohamed Salah then struck an audacious goal, but Kevin De Bruyne levelled the scores again with one of his four strikes past us to date.

Also in Europe
1973 - We beat Jeunesse D’Esch from Luxembourg 2-0 at Anfield to reach the Second Round of the European Cup 3-1 on aggregate, with an own goal from Léon Mond getting the scoring going straight after half-time, and John Toshack also on the scoresheet.
1979 - We were knocked out at the same stage, for the second consecutive season, losing 3-0 to Dinamo Tbilisi on a rainy night in the USSR, with all the goals coming in the second half, having only won the first leg 2-1.

A new low
2010 – We lost 2-1 at home to Blackpool, with future red Charlie Adam opening the scoring from the spot before Luke Varney doubled the visitors’ lead. Sotirios Kyrgiakos pulled a goal back, the club’s 9,000th in all competitions, but we failed to produce a fight-back with the away side warmly applauded off at the end of the match.

Red jocks
1964 - Ron Yeats made his Scotland debut in their 3-2 British International Championships defeat by Wales at Ninian Park. On the same day, Gordon Milne and Peter Thompson both played in England’s 4-3 win in Northern Ireland in the same competition.

1959 - Ian St. John won his second cap in Scotland’s 4-0 defeat in Northern Ireland, while still a Motherwell player. The Scots were managed by Andy Beattie, who had guested for the reds at full-back during the Second World War, and later spent some time on our backroom staff. He managed a host of clubs as well as the Scotland national side, working with Bill Shankly at Huddersfield Town, having played alongside him at Preston North End.
1891 - Future red Matt McQueen, who played in an unofficial international at the Ibrox Stadium, with the Scots thumping Canada 5-1.

For Emlyn
1978 – A testimonial dinner was held for skipper Emlyn Hughes at Formby FC. Ex-Blue Joe Mercer was guest speaker, with comedian Sonny Jones providing the jokes. Guests were treated to cream of chicken soup, followed by a roast turkey dinner, rounded off with peaches and cream.

1970 - Alun Evans netted the only goal of the game at Anfield, with Bobby Graham breaking his leg.

We have twice hosted Sheffield Wednesday in top-flight encounters at Anfield on this day in history.
1953 - Bob Paisley and Louis Bimpson were on target as we drew 2-2. Dennis Woodhead scored one of his four goals against the reds, with Jackie Sewell also netting.
1992 - Don Hutchison bagged the only goal of the game ten minutes from time, as we kept our first clean sheet of the season in our fifteenth fixture. This was Ian Rush’s 500th game for the reds.

Big Anfield wins
1987 - We beat Alan Ball’s Portsmouth 4-0 as we scored four for the third consecutive League game. Peter Beardsley, Steve McMahon and Ronnie Whelan bagged our goals, to add to a spot-kick from John Aldridge. Aldo had now scored in all of our first eight League games, and nine reds games in a row in all, with the reds notching a total of 24 goals in those eight fixtures.
1942 - Cyril Done struck twice as we beat Bury 5-2 in a Wartime League fixture, with George Mills and Michael Hulligan adding to a Gemmall own goal.

International beginning and end
1951 - Ex-reds centre-half Allenby Chilton won his second and final England cap in their 2-2 friendly draw with France at Highbury.
2001 – Future red Alberto Aquilani won his first cap for Italy Under-19’s as they beat Lithuania 2-0.

On target
2009 – Krisztián Németh scored for Hungary Under-20’s in the World Championship Finals as Hungary beat the United Arab Emirates 2-0 in a group game in Egypt, with Péter Gulácsi also featuring.
2018 – Ki-Jana Hoever scored for the Dutch Under-17’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 6-4 in Sweden.
2016 – Rhian Brewster bagged a brace for England Under-17’s as they thrashed Germany 8-1 in a friendly in Croatia, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. On the same day, future red Dominik Szoboszlai featured for Hungary at the same level as they were thumped 4-0 by the Netherlands in a European Championships qualifier in Dabas.

In and outs
1898 – Scottish half-back Barney Battles left the reds to join Celtic for a third spell. He won the title two years running in Scotland, for Hearts in 1895 and then Celtic, joining the reds for six weeks on loan at the end of the 1895/96 season where he featured in two Second Division games and three of the four Test matches as we secured promotion, for which he received a special gold medal and a cheque for a “handsome sum”. He re-signed from Dundee in March 1898 for £20 but only played one more game for the club.

2007 – Former reds half-back Johnny Wheeler’s wife Freda died. On the same day, Dani Pacheco played for Spain Under-17’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-0 in Andorra.
2012 - Ryland Morgans was appointed as Head of Fitness & Conditioning, having previously worked under Brendan Rodgers at Swansea City.
2014 - Daniel Sturridge signed a new contract, having netted 36 times in 52 reds games to date. He eventually moved on to Trabzonspor in August 2019.

Other reds games
1936 – Vic Wright and Phil Taylor netted as we beat Birmingham City 2-0 at Anfield.
1925 – We lost 2-1 at Burnley, with Harry Chambers bagging our late consolation.
1972 – We drew 1-1 in the League Cup Third Round at West Bromwich Albion, with Steve Heighway netting our goal late on and Asa Hartford on target for the home side. We won the Anfield replay 2-1 a week later, making it as far as the Fifth Round that season.

Digger off the mark
1981 - Future red John Barnes scored his first Watford goal as they beat Barnsley 3-1 at Vicarage Road.

1996 – Future red John Arne Riise played for Norway Under-15’s as they beat Wales 3-1 in a tournament game in Poland.
