Igor Bišcan wrapped it up
2004 - We won a game of two halves at Craven Cottage. The reds were dismal in a first half that saw a Luis Boa Morte brace put Fulham 2-0 up. We drew level after the break thanks to a Zat Knight own goal and a close-range Milan Baroš strike, before Josemi was sent off following a second caution. Xabi Alonso, who had replaced the hapless Salif Diao at half time, then bagged his first reds goal, with the 4-2 win completed by Igor Bišcan’s glorious strike, his first League goal. All together now, “2-0 down, 4-2 up, Igor Bišcan wrapped it up.”

First win in the Ukraine
2001 - With Gérard Houllier recovering from heart surgery, the reds became the first English side to win in Kyiv, beating Dynamo Kyiv 2-1 on their own turf thanks to goals from Danny Murphy and Steven Gerrard, with the home side having a goal disallowed in the final minute. Stéphane Henchoz reached a century of reds appearances in this game.

Souey’s century
1993 – Graeme Souness took charge of his hundredth League game as Manager as we came from behind after Darren Beckford struck to beat Oldham Athletic 2-1, with both our goals coming in the final three minutes, from Robbie Fowler and an Andy Barlow own goal.

Bobby at the treble
2021 – Roberto Firmino scored a hat-trick as we won 5-0 at Watford, with Sadio Mané reaching a century of Premier League goals in total and Mohamed Salah also on target.

Jürgen off
2022 – Mohamed Salah raced onto Alisson Becker’s long pass to score the only goal of Manchester City’s visit to Anfield. Boss Jürgen Klopp was sent off late on for vehemently protesting a foul not given against Salah.

Savage no more
1937 - Right-half Ted Savage played his 105th and final reds game, and hundredth in the League, as we lost 2-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers in a First Division fixture at Molineux, while forward Alexander Smith played for the only time. Dennis Westcott nabbed a brace, the first two of his nine goals in just eight games against the reds.

Beating the Blues
1976 - Steve Heighway and John Toshack struck as we won the Anfield derby, with Phil Neal on target from the spot, having missed one in the most recent derby six months earlier, as we led 3-0 at the break. Martin Dobson’s consolation after the break was the Blues’ first derby goal in five years. Blues boss Billy Bingham missed the game as he was recovering from an operation in hospital.
1943 - We thumped Everton 5-2 in a Wartime League game at Anfield, with Jack Balmer netting a brace, and Jim Harley, Cyril Done and Berry Nieuwenhuys also on the scoresheet.
1897 - We lost 3-0 at Goodison, with William Williams on target twice and Jack Bell also scoring.

The blues see red
1999 - We beat Chelsea 1-0 at Anfield with David Thompson on target shortly after half-time. The Blues had both Marcel Desailly and Dennis Wise sent off.

Births and death
1899 - 24-year-old centre-forward George Allan died from tuberculosis in Earlsbury in Fife, while still on our books. He had struck 56 times in 96 reds games, during two spells at Anfield and was the first red to be capped by Scotland.
2003 – Polish left-winger Mateusz Musiałowski was born in Katowice. He joined the reds from UKS SMS Łódź in August 2020, netting ten times in his first season with the Under-18’s. He appeared for the first team for the first time in July 2022 in our 3-0 friendly defeat at Anfield to Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace. He left the reds in the summer of 2024, signing for Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus.
2005 – Midfielder Kyle Kelly was born in Northampton, turning pro in October 2022.

In and out
1925 – Right-half David McMullan signed from Distillery. He failed to score in 35 senior games before moving to New York Giants in July 1928.
2020 – Ben Woodburn joined Blackpool on loan, playing thirteen times without notching. On the same day, Harry Wilson made a temporary move to Cardiff City, for whom he struck seven times in 38 games. Meanwhile, Harvey Elliott joined Blackburn Rovers for the season, bagging seven goals in 42 appearances, while midfielder Herbie Kane was sold to Barnsley for £1.25m, having played two senior games since arriving from Bristol City in 2013, appearing 28 times in his first two campaigns without getting on the scoresheet.

Reds looking towards Portugal
2002 - Steven Gerrard scored in England’s 2-2 Euro 2004 qualifying draw with FYR Macedonia in Southampton, with Michael Owen also in the team. John Arne Riise scored a trademark free-kick as Norway beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in Oslo, with ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen also in the side. Milan Baroš was also on target as the Czech Republic beat Belarus 2-0 in Teplice, with future red Craig Bellamy netting as Wales beat Italy 2-1 in Cardiff.

Dietmar Hamann featured in Germany’s 2-1 win over the Faroe Islands in Hannover, while Sami Hyypiä was on the losing side with ex-clubmate Jari Litmanen, as Finland lost 2-0 in Yugoslavia. Alex Manninger won his last cap for Austria as an R.C.D. Espanyol player, while future reds Paul Jones, Robbie Keane, Fernando Morientes, Andriy Voronin and Bolo Zenden all also played in qualifiers, with future red Alberto Aquilani turning out for Italy Under-19’s.

Heading to Wearside
1985 - Bob Bolder joined Sunderland for £100,000, following a successful loan spell. He had never made our first team after signing from Sheffield Wednesday for £125,000 in 1983, but sat on the bench at the 1984 European Cup Final in Rome, one of seventeen times he did so in Europe’s premier club competition, also doing so four more times in other competitions.
2009 – Bolo Zenden also signed for the Black Cats, having been released by Olympique de Marseille. He scored four goals in fifty outings, although only thirteen of those were starts. On the same day, reserves keeper David Martin joined Tranmere Rovers on loan. He turned out three times for them.

2015 – Midfielder Joe Cole joined Coventry City on loan from Aston Villa, making the move permanent three months later. However, he left at the end of the season after two goals in 22 outings. On the same day, centre-half Zak Whitbread signed for Shrewsbury Town. He netted once in 27 games before being released at the end of the campaign.

International reds
1991 - Steve Staunton won his last cap in his first spell as a reds player as the Republic of Ireland drew 3-3 in a European Championships qualifier in Poland. Ex-red Kevin Sheedy also played. Meanwhile, future red Karlheinz Riedle netted in Germany’s 4-1 qualifying defeat of Wales in Nuremberg. Dean Saunders was sent off, with Ian Rush also playing. Ex-red Jim Magilton was also in action that day, as Northern Ireland beat Austria 2-1 at Windsor Park.
2007 - Javier Mascherano played in Argentina’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying win in Venezuela, while future red Martin Škrtel featured in Slovakia’s 3-0 friendly defeat in Croatia. Future red James Milner scored for England Under-21’s as they beat the Republic of Ireland 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Cork, with future red Ádám Bogdán also playing at this level.

2012 – Luis Suárez scored for Uruguay as they lost a World Cup qualifier 4-1 in Bolivia, with Mario Balotelli notching his last goal for Italy as a Manchester City player in their 3-1 qualifying defeat of Denmark in Milan, while Samed Yeşil was on target for Germany Under-19’s in their 2-2 European Championships qualifying draw with the Republic of Ireland in Luxembourg, scoring in his fifth consecutive game at this level. Future red Christian Benteke also scored as Belgium beat Scotland 2-0 in Brussels, Also in international action were Daniel Agger, Joe Allen, Jordan Henderson, Nuri Şahin, Martin Škrtel, Raheem Sterling, future reds Ádám Bogdán, Steven Caulker, John Heitinga, Ragnar Klavan, Dejan Lovren, Lazar Marković, Mamadou Sakho and Xherdan Shaqiri, and ex-reds Xabi Alonso, Álvaro Arbeloa, Mark González, Tom Ince, Alexander Kačaniklić, Robbie Keane, Javier Mascherano, Nikolay Mihaylov, John Arne Riise and Fernando Torres.

2018 – Harry Wilson scored the only goal as Wales faced the Republic of Ireland in a UEFA Nations League group game in Dublin, while Simon Mignolet won his last cap as a reds player as Belgium drew a friendly 1-1 with the Netherlands in Brussels. Future red Takumi Minamino scored in his third consecutive game for Japan as they beat Uruguay 4-3 in Saitama. Corey Whelan played for the Irish Under-21’s for the last time before leaving the reds in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying defeat in Germany. Alisson Becker, Rafael Camacho, Fabinho, Roberto Firmino, Kamil Grabara, Naby Keïta, Simon Mignolet, Liam Millar, Dominic Solanke, future reds Fábio Carvalho, Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endō, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch, Diogo Jota, Arthur Melo and Dominik Szoboszlai, and ex-reds Joe Allen, Sebastián Coates, Philippe Coutinho and Martin Škrtel all also played for their countries that day, with Abel Xavier managing Mozambique and ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge of England Under-17’s.

Three for Suso
2009 – Future red Suso bagged a treble as Spain Under-17’s thrashed the Faroe Islands 6-0 in a friendly in Romania. Péter Gulácsi, Krisztián Németh and András Simon all played as Hungary lost 3-2 to Ghana in the World Championships Semi-final in Cairo.
2008 – Future reds keeper Loris Karius played for Germany Under-16’s as they won a friendly 1-0 in Finland.

1982 – League leaders Manchester United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield.
1974 – We thumped Bristol City 4-0 in a League Cup Third Round replay in L4 with Steve Heighway and Ray Kennedy each netting twice.
1971 – We won 3-2 at Nottingham Forest with Ian Storey-Moore twice equalising with the last two of his five goals against the reds. Emlyn Hughes and Steve Heighway struck before Tommy Smith converted a spot-kick.
1965 – Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan netted as Newcastle United went home on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline.

1954 – We lost a Second Division trip 2-0 at Stoke City with Harry Oscroft netting one of his six strikes past us and Joe Hutton also on target.
1948 – Cyril Done bagged the only goal of our visit to Birmingham City.
1926 – We lost 3-2 at The Wednesday, with Tommy Reid bagging a brace.
1920 – Harry Chambers struck as we won 1-0 at Sheffield United.
1909 – We won 2-1 at Bradford City as Sam Bowyer and Jimmy Stewart struck inside the opening ten minutes.

First and last caps
1973 - Future red Ray Kennedy won his sixth and final England Under-23’s cap as they were held to a goalless draw by Poland in Plymouth. Ipswich Town’s David Johnson also played.
1994 - Titi Camara bagged his last goal as a Saint-Étienne player in Guinea’s 3-1 defeat of Angola in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Conakry.
2019 - Darwin Núñez debuted for Uruguay while winning his only cap as a Unión Deportiva Almería player. He netted in their 1-1 friendly draw with Peru in Lima. On the same day, Fulham’s Fábio Carvalho won his sixth and last cap for England Under-18’s as they won 3-2 in Austria.

2023 – Ex-red Yasser Larouci debuted for Algeria in their 1-1 friendly draw with Egypt in the United Arab Emirates, with Mohamed Salah skippering Egypt. Harvey Elliott captained England Under-21’s as they lost 3-2 to Ukraine in a European Championships qualifier in Slovakia. Virgil van Dijk converted a penalty as the Netherlands beat Greece 1-0 in another qualifier in Athens, with Kostas Tsimikas on the losing side. On the same day, Sadio Mané scored from the spot, his first goal as an Al Nassr player, in Senegal’s 1-0 defeat of Cameroon in France. Diogo Jota was also in international action.

1947 – Stan Hawthorne took on Billy Thompson for the Lightweight Championships of Great Britain and British Empire at Anfield, one of many boxing fights staged at Anfield over the years.

2021 – Josh Davidson played for England Under-17’s as they thrashed Armenia 7-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Belarus.
