An epic swindle
2010 – The sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures under the leadership of John W. Henry was completed, after a chaotic few days of court cases. On the same day, Jamie Carragher signed a contract extension tying him to the club until 2013, while future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil both played as Germany Under-17’s won a European Championships qualifier 5-0 in Estonia.

Michael at the treble
1983 - Michael Robinson netted a hat-trick, his first League goals for the reds, as we won 3-1 at West Ham United, despite Craig Johnston being sent off just after the hour mark. Billy Bonds made his 700th West Ham appearance in this game, as we closed the gap on the second-placed Hammers to two points. Alan Devonshire was on target for the home side with a late consolation.
1955 - We also faced them when Alan A’Court, Jimmy Payne and Billy Liddell all struck as we won a Second Division meeting 3-1 at Anfield.

1906 – Robert Blanthorne bagged a treble as we thumped Rossendale United 6-0 in a Lancashire Senior Cup game at Anfield. Bill McPherson added a brace, with John Carlin also netting.

Luis in trouble
2011 - We were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester United when Steven Gerrard put us ahead with a free-kick before Javier Hernández headed in a late equaliser. However, the game will be best remembered for the run-in between Luis Suárez and United skipper Patrice Evra.

More reds trebles
2000 - Michael Owen left the pitch with a nasty head wound, with Emile Heskey responding by bagging a classic treble of header, right-foot and left-foot strikes as we won 4-0 at Derby County, with Vegard Heggem playing his 65th and final reds game. Patrik Berger rounded off a fantastic team move for the other goal.

1932 - Gordon Hodgson scored a twenty-minute second-half hat-trick as we beat Portsmouth 4-3 in a top-flight match at Anfield, after Dave Wright had opened the scoring. Jimmy Easson struck one of his eight goals past us, with Jack Smith and James Nichol also on target.
1960 - We also hosted Pompey in a Second Division fixture, when Dave Hickson bagged a brace in a 3-3 draw, with Roger Hunt also on target as we came from 1-0 and 3-1 down. Jimmy White bagged a brace for the visitors, with Sammy Chapman also netting.

Cup first-timers
1892 - We played our first ever FA Cup match, winning 4-0 at Nantwich in the First Qualifying Round, with John Miller netting a hat-trick. Tom Wyllie grabbed the other goal while right-half John McCartney made his reds bow.

Ben born
1999 – Forward Ben Woodburn was born in Nottingham. He made his reds bow in November 2016, scoring just once in eleven first-team outings as he became our youngest ever scorer aged seventeen years and 45 days, moving on to Preston North End in July 2022.
2004 – Keeper Luke Hewitson was born in Newcastle. He turned pro in October 2021, having joined as an Under-15 from Sunderland. He moved on to Fleetwood Town in July 2024.

Cup winners
1962 – We claimed the Liverpool Senior Cup by beating Tranmere Rovers 2-1 at Anfield, with Roger Hunt and Gordon Wallace on target.

Dirk’s bow
1913 – South African keeper Dirk Kemp was born in Cape Town. He signed from Transvaal in December 1936 but played just thirty senior and ten Wartime games for the reds.

New skipper
2003 - It was announced that Steven Gerrard had replaced Sami Hyypiä as club captain, prior to our game at home to Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana. Florent Sinama-Pongolle made his reds bow as we reached the Second Round of the UEFA Cup 4-1 on aggregate, in our 150th game in this competition. Anthony Le Tallec scored his only reds goal, with Emile Heskey grabbing his fiftieth, and Harry Kewell also netting in our 3-0 win, with El-Hadji Diouf missing a late penalty.

Leo’s reds bow
1997 - Øyvind Leonhardsen made his reds debut as a half-time substitute for Jamie Carragher after missing the opening eleven games of the season through injury, as we won 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion in a League Cup Third Round tie. Patrik Berger and Robbie Fowler were on target.
1904 - We also faced the Baggies when Jack Parkinson struck a brace in our 3-2 Second Division win at Anfield, with Bobby Robinson also on the scoresheet.

Double centurions
1966 – Ian Callaghan and Ian St. John both played their 200th League games as Roger Hunt struck in our 1-1 top-flight draw at Nottingham Forest, with Joe Baker netting one of his four goals against us. This was our fourth straight stalemate at the City Ground.

Mixed fortunes against the Villains
1938 - We beat Aston Villa 3-0 at home with Harman van den Berg, Jack Balmer and Willie Fagan all on target, with Fagan’s goal being the club’s 3,000th in all competitions. Left-half Jimmy McDougall was presented with a £650 cheque for “his loyalty and fine service as a player” after the game, nine months after his 356th and final reds game. This was George Kay’s hundredth game in charge of the reds.
1898 - We also played them in the First Division at Anfield, going down to a 3-0 defeat. Jack Devey scored one of his seven goals against the reds, with Fred Wheldon netting one of his four and George Johnson also on the scoresheet.

Sidlow’s farewell
1949 - Keeper Cyril Sidlow won his seventh and final cap for Wales as they lost 4-1 in Cardiff to England in the British International Championships.

Mixed fortunes against Rovers
2005 - Djibril Cissé grabbed the only goal against Blackburn Rovers at Anfield from a free-kick, with the visitors having Zurab Khizanishvili dismissed, although his red card was later rescinded.
1994 - We lost 3-2 at Ewood Park in another Premiership game, when Robbie Fowler and John Barnes netted for the reds. Chris Sutton nabbed two of his seven goals against us, with Mark Atkins also on target.
1924 - We also met Rovers, being held to a goalless draw in our top-flight meeting at Anfield.

Derby stalemate
1927 - We held Everton to a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park with Dick Edmed netting our goal as left-back Donald McKinlay played his 400th game for the reds.

We have twice won top-flight fixtures 4-0 at home on this day in history.

1921 – Tommy Lucas nabbed his first of his three reds goals as Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw also scored against Preston North End, with Harry Beadles converting a penalty.

2013 - Harry Wilson became Wales’ youngest ever player and the reds’ youngest ever senior international, aged 16 years 208 days, coming off the bench as they drew a World Cup qualifier 1-1 in Belgium, with ex-red Craig Bellamy winning his 78th and final cap. Steven Gerrard scored his 21st and last goal for his country as Roy Hodgson’s England beat Poland 2-0 at Wembley. Future red Alberto Moreno made his senior international bow as Spain beat Georgia 2-0 in Albacete. Luis Suárez scored from the spot with ex-red Maxi Rodríguez netting twice as Uruguay beat Argentina 3-2, while future red Mario Balotelli struck as Italy were held to a 2-2 draw by Armenia in Naples. Daniel Agger bagged a brace as Denmark thumped Malta 6-0 in Copenhagen, while ex-red Robbie Keane converted a penalty in the Republic of Ireland’s 3-1 defeat of Kazakhstan in Dublin. Ex-red Alexander Kačaniklić scored his last goal for Sweden as they lost 5-3 to Germany in Solna with Krisztián Németh winning his last cap as a Roda JC Kerkrade player. Also in international action were Tiago Ilori, Lucas, Jack Robinson, Daniel Sturridge, future reds Emre Can, Ragnar Klavan, Dejan Lovren and James Milner, and ex-reds Alberto Aquilani, Tom Ince and Dirk Kuyt.

2008 - Peter Crouch won his first cap as a Portsmouth player with Emile Heskey making his final appearance while with Wigan Athletic as Steven Gerrard netted in England’s 3-1 World Cup qualifying win in Belarus. Alberto Aquilani netted his only two goals as a Roma player as Italy beat Montenegro 2-1 in Lecce, while Yossi Benayoun was on target in Israel’s 1-1 draw in Latvia. Robbie Keane bagged his last goal as a red in the Republic of Ireland’s 1-0 victory over Cyprus at Croke Park. Future red Milan Jovanović netted in Serbia’s 3-1 win in Austria, with future red Mario Balotelli nabbing a brace as Italy Under-21’s won 3-1 in Israel and Ragnar Klavan winning his last cap as a Heracles Almelo player as they drew 0-0 with Turkey in Tallinn. Xabi Alonso, Ryan Babel, Andrea Dossena, Sami Hyypiä, Dirk Kuyt, Javier Mascherano, Fernando Torres, future reds Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Alex Manninger, Raul Meireles and Nuri Şahin, and ex-reds Milan Baroš, Craig Bellamy, Mark González, David James, Jari Litmanen, John Arne Riise, Daniel Sjölund and John Toshack all also featured in qualifiers that day.

1977 – We won 2-1 at Leeds United with Jimmy Case bagging a brace.
1968 – Chris Lawler was on target as we lost a League Cup Fourth Round tie at Arsenal. Peter Simpson gave the Gunners the lead, with John Radford scoring one of his seven goals against the reds late on.
1949 – We were held to a goalless draw at Blackpool.

On the move
2020 – Ex-reds loanee Victor Moses joined Spartak Moscow on loan from Chelsea, scoring four times in twenty games before making the move permanent in July 2021.
2015 – Ex-reds centre-back Stephen Sama signed a new contract with VfB Stuttgart, but only played four Bundesliga games between arriving in September 2014 and joining Spielvereinigung Greuther Fürth in January 2017.
2016 – Future reds boss Arne Slot was appointed Interim Head Coach of Sportclub Cambuur. He later took permanent charge, winning 21 of his 34 games in charge before moving to AZ Alkmaar in July 2017.
2022 – Former Under-23’s keeper Dan Atherton signed for Hyde United from The New Saints on a free transfer.

Internationals on target
2023 – Xherdan Shaqiri netted for Switzerland as they drew 3-3 with Belarus in a European Championships qualifier in St. Gallen, while fellow ex-red Harry Wilson bagged a brace as Wales beat Croatia 2-1 in Cardiff. Future red Giorgi Mamardashvili and ex-reds Danny Ward and Neco Williams also appeared for their countries.
2019 – Future red Takumi Minamino struck twice as Japan won a World Cup qualifier 3-0 in Tajikistan while Rafael Camacho won his sixth and last cap for Portugal Under-20’s as they lost 4-3 to Italy in the Under 20 Elite League in Guarda. Rhian Brewster, Kamil Grabara, ex-red Brad Smith and future reds and Thiago Alcântara, Luis Díaz and Cody Gakpo also represented their countries that day, while Jakub Ojrzyński debuted for Poland Under-17’s in their 2-2 European Championships qualifying draw with Belgium in Włocławek.
2018 - Ex-red Raheem Sterling bagged a brace as England beat Spain 3-2 in a UEFA Nations League group game in Seville, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, future red Thiago and ex-red Iago Aspas also featuring. Curtis Jones faced Vítězslav Jaroš with the latter saving a spot-kick in a penalty shoot-out that England Under-18’s won 5-4 after their friendly with the Czech Republic ended 2-2 in Burton. Also in action that day were Dejan Lovren, Xherdan Shaqiri, future red Kostas Tsimikas and ex-red Péter Gulácsi, while Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-20’s.

2014 – Future red Mohamed Salah netted as Egypt beat Botswana 2-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Cairo, with future reds Naby Keïta and Sadio Mané also playing in qualifiers that day while future red Marko Grujić featured for Serbia Under-19’s.
2013 – Salah also played for country as they lost a World Cup qualifier 6-1 in Ghana.
2012 – Ryan McLaughlin scored for Northern Ireland Under-19’s as they trounced Moldova 8-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Portadown. Meanwhile, future red Gini Wijnaldum struck as the Dutch Under-21’s beat Slovakia 2-0 in a European Championships qualifying play-off.

2002 - A trio of reds youngsters scored in European Under-21 Championships qualifiers. Daniel Sjölund struck as Finland drew 3-3 with Serbia & Montenegro in Smederevo. Meanwhile, Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle were both in target in France’s 3-0 win in Malta. This was Le Tallec’s first goal at this level, while Flo was netting in his third consecutive Under-21’s appearance. Alou Diarra also played, as all three won their fourth caps at this level. Also in Under-21’s action that day were Chris Kirkland and future reds Joe Cole, Peter Crouch, Ragnar Klavan, Paul Konchesky and Pepe Reina.
