Le Boss taken ill
2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. Future red Harry Kewell scored for the Yorkshire outfit, before Danny Murphy equalised, handing us our 600th Premiership point. The reds therefore became the third team, after Manchester United and Arsenal, to reach this milestone.

First ever Merseyside derby
1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top flight, at the end of which we were still seeking our first win at that level. Tom McInnes went down in history as the first derby goalscorer, with right-winger Alex Latta and left-winger John Bell also netting. The victors received a silk hat each, valued at twenty shillings, on top of their usual win bonus!
1923 - We also lost 2-1 to them in a First Division fixture at Anfield with Jimmy Walsh netting our consolation. Outside-left Fred Hopkin made his hundredth reds appearance in this game.

Drama in court
2010 – The prospective sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures went through a dramatic day. First, current club owners George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks obtained a Temporary Restraining Order from a Texas District Court to stop the sale of the club to NESV, before the High Court ruled against Gillett and Hicks. The sale was finally completed two days later.

Foxes run off with the points again
1964 - Leicester City came out on top for the third consecutive League season at Anfield, this time winning 1-0, with Mike Stringfellow nabbing one of his five goals against the reds.
1962 - We also lost, going down 3-0 at Filbert Street.

Beginnings and end
1955 - Richard Money was born in Lowestoft. The defender spent two years at Anfield after signing from Fulham for £50,000 in May 1980 but was unable to displace either Alan Kennedy or Phil Neal at full-back, making only seventeen first-team appearances before joining Luton Town in April 1982.
2002 – Midfielder Tom Hill was born in Formby. He made his senior debut in our League Cup Quarter-final defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019, signing a new contract in August 2020.

1936 - Forward Bob McDougall died. He signed from St. Cuthbert Wanderers in November 1913, netting once in eight outings before moving on to Falkirk in October 1915.
2020 – Forward Harvey Blair signed as a professional, having joined at Under-12’s level from Manchester United. He signed an extension to his deal the following March, making his senior bow in a League Cup tie at Preston North End in October 2021.

Into Europe
1965 - We reached the First Round proper of the European Cup Winners’ Cup when first-half goals from Chris Lawler and a Geoff Strong 25-yard screamer handed us a 2-0 Anfield victory over Juventus, to progress 2-1 on aggregate.

Firsts and last
1956 – Forward Eric Anderson played his 76th and final reds game as we lost a Second Division match 2-1 at Bristol City, with Johnny Wheeler bagging his first reds goal.
1900 – Right-half Maurice Parry debuted as Bolton Wanderers lost 2-1 at Anfield. Jack Cox netted with Charlie Satterthwaite nabbing the winner, although he had to be carried off as a result of a collision with Trotters’ keeper John Sutcliffe.

Four for young Mickey
1996 - Michael Owen grabbed all four goals as England Under-18’s beat Northern Ireland 4-0 in a European Championships qualifier at York City’s Bootham Crescent.
2010 – Michael Ngoo struck as England Under-19’s lost 2-1 to Belgium in a European Championships qualifier in Visé. Skipper Jonjo Shelvey had a penalty saved, while Andre Wisdom also featured.

Misery on the South coast
We have twice lost to Southampton at The Dell on this day in history.
1973 - We went down to a 1-0 defeat in a top-flight encounter, with Mick Channon on target with one of his seven strikes past us.
1999 - We lost 2-1 in a Third Round League Cup tie when Michael Owen put us ahead to reach a half century of goals for the club before the home side scored through Dean Richards and Trond Egil Soltvedt.

Managerial moves
2007 - It was announced that Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán was to step down from his role, although he remained contracted to the club until June 2008. Chief Executive Rick Parry said, “The club want to thank Pako for his hard work and contribution to our success over the past three years.”
2014 – Former Academy Manager Steve Cooper was appointed Manager of England Under-16’s. He later took charge of the Under-17’s, leading them to victory in the World Cup Finals in India in October 2017.

Goals galore
1917 - We trounced Preston North End 6-0 in a Wartime League match at Deepdale, with Arthur Metcalf grabbing a brace and Jack Waine, Thomas Bennett, Harry Lewis and John Bamber also scoring.
1934 - We beat Birmingham City by the odd goal in nine in a First Division match at Anfield, with our goals coming from Vic Wright, Jimmy McDougall, Sam English and a Gordon Hodgson brace, which included a penalty. Dave Mangnall bagged a treble for the visitors, the last three of his seven goals against the reds, with his second being the 2,000th we had conceded in the top flight, with Harold Booton also netting.
1951 - Jimmy Payne struck twice with John Smith and Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet as we beat Fulham 4-0 in another top-flight fixture in L4.

Tommy’s treble
1926 – Tommy Reid struck a hat-trick as we thumped Barrow 5-0 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson adding a brace.

International beginnings and ends
2015 – Future reds keeper Alisson Becker won his first senior cap for Brazil in their 3-1 World Cup qualifying defeat of Venezuela in Fortaleza as Red Bull Salzburg’s Takumi Minamino made his Japan debut in their 1-1 friendly draw in Iran. Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Rossiter and future red Dominic Solanke all played for England Under-19’s in a European Championships qualifier on the same day, with future red Marko Grujić playing for Serbia Under-21’s.
2013 – Future reds Charles Itandje and Joël Matip both played as Cameroon drew the first leg of their World Cup play-off 0-0 in Tunisia.
1998 - Frode Kippe won his last Under-21’s cap as a Lillestrøm player as Norway beat Albania 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Drammen.

2023 – Trey Nyoni debuted for England Under-17’s as they drew a friendly 2-2 with Norway at St. George’s Park.
2019 – Dejan Lovren won his last cap as a reds player as Croatia drew a European Championships qualifier 1-1 in Wales, with Harry Wilson and ex-red Joe Allen featuring for the home side. Andy Robertson captained a Scotland side managed by ex-red Steve Clarke, with Gini Wijnaldum bagging a brace as the Netherlands won a qualifier 2-1 in Belarus. Ex-red Emre Can was sent off as Germany won 3-0 in Estonia, with Fabinho, Roberto Firmino, Virgil van Dijk, future reds Arthur Melo and Dominik Szoboszlai, and ex-reds Ryan Babel, Christian Benteke, Philippe Coutinho and Péter Gulácsi also in action.

2018 – Emre Can won his first cap since moving to Juventus, with skipper Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum both on target as the Netherlands beat Germany 3-1 in a UEFA Nations League group game in Amsterdam. Owen Beck won his only Under-17’s cap as Wales lost 1-0 to Kazakhstan in Portugal. Ex-reds Ryan Babel and Martin Škrtel both also played in the competition that day, with Academy keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle, Sadio Mané and future reds Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai all also in international action as Abel Xavier took charge of Mozambique.

International reds on target
2014 – Luis Suárez bagged his first two goals for Uruguay as a Barcelona player as they won a friendly 3-0 in Oman, while Xherdan Shaqiri bagged his last goal while playing for Bayern München as Switzerland won a European Championships qualifier 4-0 in San Marino. On the same day, Lloyd Jones helped England Under-20’s to claim the Four Nations Tournament in the Netherlands, following their 1-1 draw with Turkey. Also in international action that day were Divock Origi and ex-reds Alberto Aquilani and Nikolay Mihaylov, who was winning his first cap as a Mersin İdmanyurdu player.
2015 – Origi featured for Belgium again, with Joe Gomez, Jordon Ibe, Simon Mignolet, Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Rossiter, ex-reds Javier Mascherano and Carl Medjani and future reds Sadio Mané, Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum all also in international action.
2009 – Wijnaldum also played for the Netherlands Under-21’s. Krisztián Németh scored in the shoot-out as Hungary Under-20’s beat Costa Rica in the 3rd Place Play-off in the World Championship Finals in Cairo, with Péter Gulácsi and András Simon also featuring. Future red Fabio Borini scored for Italy Under-19’s that day, with David N’Gog and future reds Mario Balotelli and Mamadou Sakho also in international action.

1993 - Ian Rush, ex-red Dean Saunders and future reds Jari Litmanen and Karlheinz Riedle all netted for their countries. Wales beat Cyprus 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Cardiff, with Finland going down 3-2 in a qualifier in Sweden. Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson took charge of Switzerland as they lost a qualifier 1-0 in Portugal and Germany thumped Uruguay 5-0 in a friendly in Karlsruhe, with future red Christian Ziege also playing.
2020 – Ex-red Luis Súarez converted two penalties as Uruguay lost a World Cup qualifier 4-2 in Ecuador, with Darwin Núñez winning his first cap as a SL Benfica player. On the same day, Kamil Grabara won his nineteenth and last cap for Poland Under-21’s as they drew 1-1 with Bulgaria in a European Championships qualifier in Gdynia. Meanwhile, future red Ryan Gravenberch bagged his only goal for the Dutch Under-21’s in their 7-0 thrashing of Cyprus in a qualifier in Paphos. Bobby Duncan, Takumi Minamino, Xherdan Shaqiri, future red Giorgi Mamardashvili and ex-red Emre Can all also played for their countries that day as Wataru Endō won his first cap as a VfB Stuttgart player.

1982 - Future red John Wark was on the scoresheet as Scotland beat East Germany 2-0 at Hampden Park in a European Championships qualifier. Alan Hansen also played, with Graeme Souness skippering the side.  Mark Lawrenson, Phil Thompson, Ronnie Whelan and future red Michael Robinson were all also in international action that day.
1971 - John Toshack scored as Wales beat Finland 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Cardiff.
2012 – Samed Yeşil bagged a brace for Germany Under-19’s in their 5-0 away thumping of Luxembourg in a European Championships qualifier. Meanwhile, future reds loanee Victor Moses bagged his first two goals for Nigeria in their 6-1 thumping of Liberia in an African Cup of Nations qualifier in Abuja, with future reds Sadio Mané and Kolo Touré facing off as Senegal lost 2-0 to the Ivory Coast in Dakar, with the match abandoned after 75 minutes due to crowd trouble.

2007 – Future red Luis Suárez struck his first senior international goal while winning his third cap for Uruguay as they thumped Bolivia 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Montevideo. Martin Škrtel netted his last goal as a Zenit St. Petersburg player in Slovakia’s 7-0 thumping of San Marino in a Euro 2008 qualifier. Meanwhile, Albert Riera bagged his only goal while with R.C.D. Espanyol in Spain’s 3-1 win in Denmark and Nicolas Anelka netted his final goal as a Bolton Wanderers player in France’s 6-0 victory in the Faroe Islands. Steven Gerrard skippered his country in a competitive game for the first time as England beat Estonia 3-0 at Wembley. Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun, Steve Finnan, Sami Hyypiä, Javier Mascherano, Krisztián Németh, Andriy Voronin, future reds Joe Cole, Péter Gulácsi, John Heitinga, Robbie Keane, Ragnar Klavan, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Alex Manninger, Christian Poulsen and Maxi Rodríguez and ex-reds Craig Bellamy, Mark González, Michael Owen, Daniel Sjölund and Finland and Wales bosses Roy Hodgson and John Toshack were all also in international action that day.

No more silent knight for England
1971 - Chris Lawler won his fourth and final cap for England as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-2 in Switzerland.

2-1 again
1906 - We lost 2-1 at The Wednesday, our fifth defeat by that score in consecutive fixtures that season. Sam Raybould struck for the reds in a game staged as a benefit match for Billy Dunlop, while Andrew Wilson netted one of his eight goals past us, with Ollie Tummon also on target.

Back to Stoke
2000 - Frode Kippe joined Stoke City for a second loan spell. He made 24 appearances, staying at the Britannia Stadium for the rest of the season as the Potters narrowly missed out on promotion to the First Division.

The road to Germany
2004 - Ex-red Michael Owen struck the only goal of England’s win in Azerbaijan, with future red Joe Cole also playing. Future red Robbie Keane bagged both goals, including a penalty, as the Republic of Ireland beat the Faroe Islands 2-0 in another qualifier, with Steve Finnan also featuring. Also in World Cup qualifying action that day were Alou Diarra, Jerzy Dudek, Sami Hyypiä, John Arne Riise, future reds Craig Bellamy, John Heitinga, Dirk Kuyt, Javier Mascherano, Christian Poulsen, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin and ex-red Paul Jones, with Alex Manninger winning his last cap as a Bologna player as Austria drew 3-3 in Northern Ireland.

A rare defeat
1993 - Ronnie Whelan and ex-reds Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton all featured as the Republic of Ireland suffered their first competitive defeat at Lansdowne Road for eight years, losing 3-1 to Spain in a World Cup qualifier. Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Ronnie Rosenthal, ex-red Jim Magilton and future reds Brad Friedel, Paul Ince and Gary McAllister all also played for their countries, with Gérard Houllier in charge as Ronnie Rosenthal’s Israel beat France 3-2 at the Stade de France.

Starting out and finishing
1981 - Paul Stewart signed as a professional for Blackpool. He played 225 times for the Seasiders, scoring 62 times before being sold to Manchester City in March 1987. His greatest moment came when he scored Tottenham Hotspur’s equaliser in the 1991 FA Cup Final, but he failed to shine at Anfield.

1986 - Reserves winger John Jeffers turned pro at Anfield. He did not break into our first-team, but went on to carve out a career with Port Vale and Stockport County.
2008 - Ex-reds centre-half Stéphane Henchoz announced his retirement from football.
2022 – Midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner signed for Queens Park Rangers after his contract with the reds had expired in the summer.

Other reds games
1979 – We won 2-1 at Ipswich Town to leave the Blues bottom of the table. Alan Hunter put through his own net, with David Johnson also on target.
1928 – Gordon Hodgson and Jimmy McDougall struck as we came from behind to beat Newcastle United 2-1 in L4 as forward Billy Millar played his third and last game for the club.

Stevie in the running
2005 - Steven Gerrard was named among the thirty players short-listed for the FIFA World Player of the Year award, which was eventually retained by Ronaldinho.

Papa again
2016 – Ex-reds centre-forward Christian Benteke became a father for the second time, this time to a daughter called Nylah.

Also in international action
2023 – Virgil van Dijk captained the Netherlands as they lost a European Championships qualifier 2-1 in France, with clubmate Ibrahima Konaté on the winning side. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Wataru Endō, Diogo Jota, Kostas Tsimikas and ex-reds Jordan Henderson, Takumi Minamino and Liam Millar all also played for their countries.
