Goalscoring debutants
1946 - Forward Cyril Done scored on his official reds debut as we were held 1-1 by Charlton Athletic at home. He had also scored in the previous first-class reds game in which he had played - seven years before, just before the outbreak of war when the season was cancelled. Future reds boss Don Welsh netted for the visitors, having previously done so against us before the Second World War!
1907 - Harold Fitzpatrick scored on his reds debut to hand us a 1-0 home victory over Sunderland in another top-flight encounter as outside-right Arthur Goddard played his 200th reds game, while left-half Samuel Hignett made his only senior appearance for the club.

Fastest treble
2022 – Mohamed Salah scored the fastest hat-trick in UEFA Champions League history, taking just six minutes and twelve seconds to net three times in our groups stage game at Rangers. Scott Arfield gave the home side the lead, but we romped home as 7-1 winners with Roberto Firmino netting either side of the break before Darwin Núñez scored. Salah then arrived from the bench to grab his treble, with Harvey Elliott completing the scoring.

Another record for Michael
2002 - Michael Owen scored his nineteenth England goal, more than any other red in history until it was equalled by Steven Gerrard in August 2010, in his 43rd game as they beat Slovakia 2-1 in their Euro 2004 qualifier in Bratislava. Gerrard and Emile Heskey both also played. On the same day, Sami Hyypiä netted in Finland’s 3-0 defeat of Azerbaijan in Helsinki, playing alongside ex-red Jari Litmanen who was winning his eightieth cap. Meanwhile, Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both won their first caps as reds players as Senegal drew 2-2 with Nigeria in a Joola Disaster Charity Match in Dakar. Bruno Cheyrou, Jerzy Dudek, John Arne Riise, ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen and future reds Yossi Benayoun, Alex Manninger, Fernando Morientes and Christian Poulsen all also played in internationals that day.

Kenny scores away at Anfield
1977 - Kenny Dalglish scored with a header to complete Scotland’s 2-0 defeat of Wales at Anfield, following a controversial penalty, as he won his fiftieth cap. This result ensured the Scots qualified for the World Cup Finals in Argentina. Joey Jones and John Toshack were on the losing, ‘home’ side. Steve Heighway and future red Mark Lawrenson both featured as the Republic of Ireland were held to a goalless draw by Bulgaria at Lansdowne Road on the same day.
1984 – Dalglish was dropped for the first time in his reds career when Joe Fagan left him out of our Friday night live televised League game at Tottenham Hotspur that we lost 1-0, thanks to a first-half Garth Crooks goal, the first of his four past us. Fagan later admitted that it was his “daftest decision” as reds boss.

Europe’s best
1978 – The reds were named as European team of the year at a ceremony in Paris, having retained the European Cup at Wembley earlier that year.

Reds come into the world
1867 - Right-half Rab Howell was born in Sheffield. He went on to become the only true Romany to play for England, playing 67 reds games without scoring after signing from Sheffield United for £200 in April 1898. He left for Preston North End in June 1901.
1897 - Forward Sam Bowyer was born in Northwich. He signed from Earlestown in March 1907, grabbing sixteen goals in 48 reds games before leaving for Bedminster in 1912.

1987 - Former reserves attacking midfielder Besian Idrizaj was born in Baden in Austria. He was actually a Kosovan-Albanian and was voted the best young player in the Austrian equivalent of the Championship shortly before moving to England. He signed from Linzer ASK for an initial £190,000 in August 2005 and made his first senior appearance in our friendly at Crewe Alexandra back in July 2006, netting a treble at Wrexham a year later, but failed to make the first-team squad, sadly dying aged just 22 in May 2010.

Sammy the champion
1982 - Sammy Lee skippered England Under-21’s as they lost 3-2 to West Germany in Bremen in the second leg of the Final of the European Championships. However, their first leg lead was enough to hand them the title, 5-4 on aggregate. Future red David Hodgson also played.

Mixed fortunes against the Mancs
We have faced Manchester United three times on this day in history.
1996 - David Beckham netted the only goal of the game at Old Trafford.
1968 - We beat the European Champions 2-0 at Anfield when Ian St. John and Alun Evans struck.
1895 - We thumped Newton Heath as they were then known 7-1 at home, with two apiece from Frank Becton, Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw and Fred Geary, and a goal from Jimmy Ross.

Into Romania
1966 – Half-back Willie Stevenson put through his own net while playing his 200th red game to start the scoring as we lost 3-1 in Romania to Petrolul Ploieşti in the second leg of our European Cup First Round tie. Roger Hunt grabbed our goal, with home defender Gheorghe Florea sent off late on in a bruising encounter. The tie ended level at 3-3 on aggregate and, as this was before the away goals rule, a third game was needed, which we won in Brussels a week later.

Bill’s treble
1938 – Forward Bill Kinghorn scored a hat-trick as we thumped Blackburn Rovers 6-1 in the second replay of our Lancashire Senior Cup First Round tie. John Browning bagged a brace, with Ted Harston also netting.

Saints beaten
1985 - Steve McMahon scored the only goal of the game as we beat Southampton 1-0 at Anfield. Six Saints were booked, including ex-red Jimmy Case and future red Mark Wright.

Derby despair
1918 - We lost a Wartime League fixture 4-2 at Goodison with our goals coming from Thomas Green and a Billy Wareing own goal.

Kenny in charge again
1991 - Kenny Dalglish was appointed Manager of Blackburn Rovers. He led them to their first League title in 81 years in 1995, before moving upstairs.
2014 – Ex-reds defender Markus Babbel was appointed Manager of Luzern, leading them to 36 wins in 79 League fixtures in Switzerland.

Salif departs
2006 - Salif Diao joined Stoke City on loan. He turned out seventeen times for them before making the switch permanent in January 2007. On the same day, Steven Gerrard was named on the thirty-man shortlist for the FIFA World Player of the Year awards. He had finished seventh the year before, and this time he was named in twelfth place as Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro claimed the prize.
1933 – Scottish outside-right Danny McRorie left the reds to join Rochdale, after a trial at Millwall earlier in the year. He had bagged six goals in 35 reds games after signing from Morton for £1,500 in November 1930.

Red trebles
2005 - Future red Fernando Torres grabbed a hat-trick, including a penalty, as Spain thumped San Marino 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Serravalle.
1932 – Gordon Hodgson scored three times in our Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round defeat of Accrington Stanley at Anfield. Dave Wright also struck in a 5-1 win.
1908 – Bert Goode netted a treble as we won a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie 4-2 at Nelson, with Arthur Berry also netting.

Igor on his way
2000 - It was announced that Igor Bišcan would be joining the reds from Dinamo Zagreb during the Croatian mid-season break. He went on to play 118 reds games, netting three times as he helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Charity Shield in 2001, and the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role on the road to Istanbul in 2005.

Beaten twice by Wednesday
We have lost two top-flight fixtures to The Wednesday on this day in history.
1901 - Tom Robertson grabbed our consolation in a 2-1 home defeat. Harry Chapman bagged the first of his six strikes against the reds, with Andrew Wilson netting one of his eight past us.
1912 - We lost 1-0 at Hillsborough, with David McLean missing a penalty for the home side.

We have also entertained Birmingham City in the First Division twice on this day.
1929 - Jim Smith was on target in a 1-1 draw as John Lindsay played his sixteenth and final reds game.
1935 - Berry Nieuwenhuys was on the scoresheet in our 2-1 defeat as Fred Harris netted one of his five goals past us, with Charlie Jones also scoring.

Don’s last
1957 – Right-back Don Campbell struck his second and final reds goal as we beat Swansea Town 4-0 in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. Tony Rowley bagged a brace with Jimmy Melia also on target.

Stan’s farewell
2009 – Wing-half Stan Palk died at Royal Liverpool Hospital. He only played thirteen reds games after signing from South Liverpool in 1940. He moved to Port Vale in July 1948, who were managed by ex-red Gordon Hodgson, for £10,000, the record fee we had received to date.

Other international goalscorers
1983 - Sammy Lee netted in England’s 3-0 European Championships qualifying win in Hungary, his final goal for his country. Ian Rush bagged a brace on the same day as Wales thrashed Romania 5-0, with ex-red Joey Jones also featuring. Meanwhile, Kenny Dalglish, future red John Wark and ex-red Frank McGarvey all featured as Scotland were held to a 1-1 draw by Belgium at Hampden Park.
2013 – Ex-red Carl Medjani struck as Algeria lost 3-2 in the first leg of their World Cup play-off in Burkina Faso, his first goal for his country and only one while on loan with Olympiacos from AS Monaco. Jordon Ibe, Lucas and future red Sadio Mané were also in international action that day.

1996 – Future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason netted the only goal of Iceland Under-19’s friendly in Belgium.
2002 - Future red Andriy Voronin bagged his first goal for the Ukraine, while winning his third cap in their 2-0 Euro 2004 qualifying defeat of Greece in Kyiv.
2004 - Harry Kewell struck as Australia thumped the Solomon Islands 6-0 in the second leg of the OFC Nations Cup Final in Sydney, to claim the title 11-1 on aggregate, and therefore also qualify for the 2005 Confederations Cup.

1977 - Ray Kennedy netted his final England goal in their 2-0 World Cup qualifying win in Luxembourg. Ian Callaghan won his fourth and final cap, while Emlyn Hughes skippered a side that also included Ray Clemence and Terry McDermott.
1963 - Ian St. John was on target as Scotland won 2-1 in Northern Ireland in the British International Championships.
2023 – Harvey Elliott bagged a brace as England Under-21’s thrashed Serbia 9-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Nottingham, with Jarell Quansah debuting at this level. Darwin Núñez scored from the spot as Uruguay drew a World Cup qualifier 2-2 in Colombia, with Luis Díaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah all in action as Steve Clarke, Bernard Diomède and Rigobert Song took charge of their countries.

2010 – Raul Meireles scored for Portugal in their 3-1 European Championships qualifying win in Iceland. David N’Gog struck as France Under-21’s won 3-1 in a friendly in Denmark. Ex-red Robbie Keane had a penalty saved while skippering the Republic of Ireland to a 1-1 qualifying draw in Slovakia. Sami Hyypiä won his 105th and last senior cap in Finland’s 2-1 defeat by Hungary in Helsinki in another qualifier. First and last caps
2012 – Jonjo Shelvey made his senior England bow, his only cap as a reds player, as Roy Hodgson’s side thumped San Marino 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley with future red Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain bagging his first goal for his country. Andy Carroll played his only international while on loan at West Ham United. Raheem Sterling was booked while winning his first cap for England Under-21’s in their 1-0 victory over Serbia in a European Championships play-off at Carrow Road, with Jordan Henderson skippering a side that also featured ex-red Tom Ince and future red Steven Caulker.
2015 – Danny Ings made his senior bow as Roy Hodgson’s England won 3-0 in a Euro 2016 qualifier in Lithuania, his only cap as a reds player, with future red Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on target. Adam Lallana, Martin Škrtel, Brad Smith, future reds Thiago Alcântara, Naby Keïta and Xherdan Shaqiri, and ex-reds Mikel San José and Jonjo Shelvey all also featured for their countries that day with Augsburg’s Ragnar Klavan scoring an own goal.

2016 – Keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle won his second and last cap for Guyana as a Barnet player as they lost a Caribbean Cup qualifier 4-2 to Jamaica in Providence after extra time.
2018 - Krisztián Németh won his first cap in his second spell as a Sporting Kansas City player as Hungary lost a UEFA Nations League game 1-0 in Greece, with future red Kostas Tsimikas debuting for the home side. Fulham’s Harvey Elliott debuted for England Under-17’s as they beat the USA 3-1 in a friendly in Chester, with his clubmate Fábio Carvalho also featuring as ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge. Fabinho, Kamil Grabara, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keïta, Dejan Lovren, Xherdan Shaqiri, future reds Cody Gakpo and Arthur Melo, and ex-reds Sebastián Coates, Philippe Coutinho, Péter Gulácsi and Raheem Sterling all also played for their countries that day, with Mohamed Salah scoring direct from a corner in Egypt’s 4-1 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying defeat of Swaziland in Cairo.

2021 - Marko Grujić won his first cap since signing permanently for Porto as Serbia beat Azerbaijan 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Belgrade. Sepp van den Berg debuted for the Dutch Under-21’s in their 5-0 thumping of Wales in a European Championships qualifier in Nijmegen, with Owen Beck and ex-red Ki-Jana Hoever also featuring. 1980 - Bruce Grobbelaar won his first cap for the renamed Zimbabwe as they lost a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in Cameroon.
1988 - Øyvind Leonhardsen won his only cap for Norway Under-18’s cap as fellow future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his third and final one in their 4-1 friendly defeat in Denmark. Meanwhile, future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel appeared in Brazil’s 2-1 defeat of Belgium in Antwerp
1986 – Leonhardsen turned out at Under-15’s level for the only time as they beat Finland 3-2 in Mariehamn.

1994 - Øyvind Leonhardsen won his last cap as a Rosenborg BK player in Norway’s 1-1 draw at home to the Dutch in a Euro ’96 qualifier in Oslo, with Stig Inge Bjørnebye also playing. Phil Babb, John Barnes, Rob Jones, future reds Stéphane Henchoz, Paul Ince, Jari Litmanen, Jason McAteer and Steve Staunton, and ex-reds István Kozma, Jim Magilton and Ronnie Rosenthal all also represented their countries that day, with Roy Hodgson managing Switzerland.
2004 - Future red Jermaine Pennant won his 24th and final cap for England Under-21’s as they held Azerbaijan to a goalless draw in a European Championships qualifier in Baku. Fellow future reds Scott Carson, Stewart Downing, Glen Johnson, James Milner and Gary O’Neil all also featured, with future red Raul Meireles playing for Portugal at the same level.
2007 – Milner played for the Under-21’s again as they beat Montenegro 1-0 in another qualifier in Leicester, with future red Dejan Lovren also in action at this level. Future red Andy Carroll scored for England Under-19’s in their 5-1 thumping of Iceland in a qualifier in Doncaster, with Nikolay Mihaylov also in action for his country.

2012 - Jermaine Pennant joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan from Stoke City, playing fifteen times before returning to the Britannia Stadium.
