Happy birthday Digger
1963 - John Barnes was born at Up Park in Kingston, Jamaica. He signed from Watford for £900,000 in June 1987, a transfer that had been heavily trailed for at least six months. Kopites were not disappointed by his performances once he had arrived, as he helped us to two League titles, FA Cup, League Cup and two FA Charity Shields during an Anfield career in which he scored 108 goals in 407 appearances. He was also twice voted Football Writers’ Player Of The Year, as well as once by his fellow players, joining Newcastle United on a free transfer in August 1997. He became a father for the seventh time on his 47th birthday.

Anfield goalscoring feats
1992 - Ian Rush scored his 200th League goal, including fourteen for Chester. Jimmy Phillips scored the first Premier League penalty against the reds as we beat Middlesbrough 4-1. Ronnie Rosenthal grabbed a brace, with Steve McManaman also on target, while future reds bench-warmer Stephen Pears was in the visitors’ goal. Steve Nicol played his 400th game for the club.
1896 - Inside-left Davy Hannah bagged a top-flight treble as we beat Sunderland 3-0.

A strong signing
1964 - Geoff Strong arrived from Arsenal for a club record £40,000 fee. He made 201 reds appearances, netting 33 times and winning a League title medal and the FA Charity Shield the year after helping us to our first ever FA Cup triumph. He left the reds to join Coventry City for £29,500 in August 1970. Sadly, he died in June 2013 after suffering with Alzheimer’s disease.

Beating the Blues
2010 – We beat Chelsea 2-0 in a Premiership fixture at Anfield, thanks to a first-half Fernando Torres brace as Lucas dominated the midfield.
1981 - Kenny Dalglish bagged a brace in the space of six minutes with Ian Rush also striking as we beat Gordon Lee’s Everton 3-1 at Anfield, with the game goalless at half time. The Blues had Eamonn O’Keefe dismissed for a high, late challenge on Ronnie Whelan, with Mick Ferguson netting for the visitors.

Farewell to Melwood
2020 – The reds trained at Melwood for the last time, ahead of the move to Kirkby. It had been the club’s training ground since the 1950’s.

Three-ton Hendo
2021 - Jordan Henderson played his 300th League game for the reds as we lost 3-2 at West Ham United. Alisson Becker flapped at a cross to score an early own goal, with Trent Alexander-Arnold levelling before the break. Pablo Fornals and Kurt Zouma both struck in the second half, before Divock Origi netted.

More birthdays
1877 – Welsh international right-half Maurice Parry was born in Trefonen, Shropshire. He signed from Brighton United in August 1900, scoring four times in 221 reds games, moving on to Partick Thistle in May 1909, later spending time coaching back at Anfield.
1927 – Outside-right Don Woan was born in Liverpool. He signed from Bootle Athletic for £1,000, but only played two senior games before moving on to Leyton Orient in November 1951.

1990 – Spanish centre-half Daniel Ayala was born in Seville. He signed from Sevilla for £160,000 in September 2007, making his senior debut as substitute in our 2-1 League defeat at Tottenham Hotspur in August 2009, and his first start as we thumped Stoke City 4-0 at Anfield three days later. He played five reds games in total before being sold to Norwich City for £850,000 in August 2011 after loan spells at Hull City and Derby County.

Gloves on and off
1919 - Pre-war reds custodian Ned Doig died from Spanish flu. He made 53 reds appearances after signing from Sunderland for £150 in August 1904, helping us to the Second Division title in his first season, and played on until 1908, finishing as our oldest ever player aged 41 years and 165 days.
1997 - Reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Swindon Town on loan, where he made three first-team appearances.
1977 - Steve Ogrizovic signed from Chesterfield for £70,000. He only made five first-team starts in five years at Anfield as understudy to Ray Clemence, sitting on the bench on a further 27 occasions. He had more luck at Coventry City, winning the FA Cup with them in 1987 and making more than 500 League appearances.

Making their bow
1959 - Dave Hickson scored both goals on his reds debut, the day after his controversial move across Stanley Park, as we beat Second Division pace-setters Aston Villa 2-1, one of his former clubs, ending their run of fourteen games unbeaten. His arrival added an extra 15,000 to the usual gate, with one supporter running onto the pitch to kiss him on the cheek! Peter McParland struck for the Villains, doing so again in the away encounter later in the season.

1964 - Geoff Strong made his reds bow in our 1-1 top-flight draw at Fulham. Ian Callaghan netted our goal, with Johnny Haynes on target for the Cottagers.
1908 – Inside-left Bert Goode played the first of his seven reds games in our 1-0 First Division defeat at Bristol City, as Andy Burton struck one of his four goals against the reds, as well as missing a penalty.
1903 - Right-back Alf West debuted as we beat Notts County 2-1 in another top-flight fixture at Anfield thanks to half-back John ‘Geezer’ Hughes’ first reds strike and a Thomas Prescott own goal. Percy Humphreys netted one of his six goals past the reds.

Beating Rovers
1904 - Jack Parkinson scored all our goals as we thumped Blackburn Rovers 5-1 in a Lancashire Senior Cup tie at Anfield.
1931 – We won a top-flight meeting 4-2, thanks to a Harold Barton brace and goals from Gordon Gunson and Gordon Hodgson.

King Kenny dismissed
1984 - Kenny Dalglish and SL Benfica’s Minervino Pietra were both sent off after a scuffle as we lost 1-0 in the Estádio da Luz with Bruce Grobbelaar conceding an early penalty, although we progressed to the Third Round of the European Cup 3-2 on aggregate as Mark Lawrenson reached 200 reds appearances.

Also in Europe
1967 - We trounced German high-fliers TSV 1860 München 8-0 in a Fairs Cup Second Round tie at Anfield with Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan both netting twice. Hunt’s goals took him to 242 reds strikes, so beating Gordon Hodgson’s club record. The other goals came from a Tommy Smith penalty, Ian St. John, Tony Hateley and Peter Thompson.
1972 - Emlyn Hughes bagged a brace as we won 3-1 at AEK Athens although he handled to give away the penalty that the Greeks scored from. Phil Boersma added the final goal, one of four he scored in that season’s victorious UEFA Cup campaign.

Derby disappointment
1998 - Jamie Redknapp grabbed our late consolation as we lost 2-1 at home to Derby County, Roy Evans’ last League game as joint Manager. Paulo Wanchope struck one of his four goals past us, with Kevin Harper also scoring for the visitors.
1970 - We also faced the Rams when we held them to a goalless draw at the Baseball Ground.

First caps
1992 - Myllykosken Pallo-47’s Sami Hyypiä won his first full international cap as Finland drew 1-1 in a friendly in Tunisia. His clubmate Jari Litmanen also played, winning his 23rd cap.
2001 – Future red Glen Johnson made his debut for England Under-19’s as they beat Georgia 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in York, with future reds coach Gary O’Neil also in action.

Harry for the League
1896 - Forward Harry Bradshaw represented the Football League as they beat an Irish League side 2-0. The reds beat Sunderland 3-0 in a top-flight meeting on the same day, thanks to a David Hannah brace and goal from Malcolm McVean.

Done it again
1942 - Cyril Done scored in his eighth consecutive game as the reds beat Chester 4-2 in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield. Willie Fagan, Jack Balmer and Billy Liddell also netted.

Management moves
2002 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Italian Serie B side Calcio Catania. He stayed in the job for less than three months before resigning.
2011 – Dietmar Hamann resigned as Stockport County boss, after a failed takeover of the club. On the same day, Dave Watson was appointed Under-18's Coach at Newcastle United.

Beginning and end
1918 – Forward Wilf Bartrop died in First World War action in Warcoing, Belgium. He arrived from Barnsley for £900 in May 1914, playing three games before joining the Royal Field Artillery in 1915.
1923 - Joe Keetley signed from Accrington Stanley for £1,200, netting twice in nine reds games before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers in May 1925.

Other reds games
1953 – Louis Bimpson and Kevin Baron struck as Manchester City held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield.
1936 – Berry Nieuwenhuys was on target early on as we lost 3-1 at Preston North End, despite leading at the break. Joe Beresford netted the last of his four goals against the reds before Hugh O’Donnell scored. Future red Willie Fagan was also on the scoresheet.
1914 – We shared a goalless draw with Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.

Also on the move
2001 - Julian Dicks signed for non-League Canvey Island, helping them to reach the FA Cup Third Round.
2014 – Ex-Academy midfielder Craig Roddan joined Accrington Stanley, although he managed only one FA Cup appearance in his two months with them.

Diego at Melwood
2008 – Argentina boss Diego Maradona visited Melwood, with the reds players clamouring to meet the legendary former player.

Also in international action
2014 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-16’s as they beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in the Victory Shield in Dungannon, with Adam Lewis and Okera Simmonds both featuring.
