Records in the League Cup
1994 - Ian Rush scored his sixteenth and final reds hat-trick in his 600th reds game as we won 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers in a Fourth Round tie. Chris Sutton’s late consolation was one of his seven strikes against the reds. On the same day, future red Sami Hyypiä played for Finland in their 2-0 friendly defeat in Spain.

1988 - John Durnin made his third and final reds appearance, as a substitute, as we lost 4-1 at West Ham United at the same stage of the competition, our worst ever League Cup defeat. Future red Paul Ince opened the scoring with a spectacular volley, before heading in a second. John Aldridge converted a penalty, with Steve Staunton then heading into his own net, unchallenged. A Tony Gale free-kick completed the scoring.

Births and death
2021 – Ray Kennedy died. After five successful years as a forward with Arsenal, Bob Paisley converted him into a left-sided midfielder following his club record £180,000 arrival as Bill Shankly’s last signing in July 1974. He won six League titles, three European Cups, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields before joining John Toshack’s Swansea City in January 1982, striking 72 times in 393 reds games.

1970 - Phil Babb was born in Lambeth. He struck once in 170 games for the reds following his club record £3.6m capture from Coventry City in September 1994, also a then British record fee for a defender. He joined Sporting Clube de Portugal after six years at Anfield.
1972 - Abel Xavier was born in Nampula in Mozambique. He crossed Stanley Park for £800,000 in January 2002 and netted twice in 21 reds games, of which we only lost three. His next club was Hannover 96 in Germany, who he joined in February 2004 after being released by the reds.
1997 – Keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle was born in London. He joined the reds in August 2018 but was released in June 2020 and is now with Welling United.

Most recently
2023 – We beat Austrians LASK 4-0 in our UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield. Luis Díaz and Cody Gakpo both scored early on, with Mohamed Salah converting a penalty after the break. Gakpo completed the scoring in stoppage time. This result ensured we qualified as group winners with a game to spare.
2019 – Keeper Alisson Becker was dismissed for handling outside his area late on when we were leading Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 at Anfield thanks to a pair of Virgil van Dijk headers. Lewis Dunk beat Adrián from the resulting free-kick but the game ended 2-1.

2005 - Momo Sissoko was sent off as we won 2-0 at Sunderland thanks to goals from Luis García and Steven Gerrard. This ensured we had gone the whole month of November without conceding a goal, a club first.
2003 - We entertained Birmingham City. Steven Gerrard scored from the spot just a minute after Mikael Forssell had opened the scoring for the visitors, before Harry Kewell netted our 150th League goal against the Blues, which was also his fiftieth League goal in England. Emile Heskey then scored a spectacular strike, his hundredth club goal, against his future employers as we won 3-1.

Twice against the Canaries
We have twice hosted Norwich City, winning on both occasions.
1982 – Mark Lawrenson and David Fairclough struck as we won a League Cup Fourth Round tie 2-0, with left-back Alan Kennedy playing his 200th reds game as Bob Paisley took charge for the 500th time.
1991 – Jan Mølby scored his fiftieth reds goal with Ray Houghton also on the scoresheet in a 2-1 League victory.

New arrivals
1951 – Left-winger Mervyn Jones, one of the smallest players to ever play for the club at just five feet four inches, signed from Bangor City. However, he moved on to Southampton in July 1953 after just five reds outings.
2000 – Forward Daniel Sjölund signed from West Ham United for £1m. He never so much as made a first-team match-day squad, moving on to Swedish side Djurgårdens IF in January 2004.

Beating the Villains
1901 - We beat Aston Villa at Anfield, with Sam Raybould grabbing the only goal of the game. Inside-forward Charlie Satterthwaite played his 45th and final reds game.
1912 - Donald McKinlay struck as we won another First Division meeting 2-0 in L4, with our other score coming from a Freddie Miles own goal.

Derby joy
1938 – We beat Everton 2-1 in the second replay of our Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, with E. Patterson and Ron Jones netting for the reds.

Keech’s farewell
1895 – Half-back Bill Keech played his sixth and final reds game as we lost 2-0 at Leicester Fosse, on our way to claiming the Second Division title.

On the move
1989 - Nigel Spackman was signed for Rangers by Graeme Souness, arriving from Queens Park Rangers for £500,000. He spent three years at Ibrox, helping them to three straight League titles.
1927 – Scottish centre-half David Pratt left the reds for Bury. He had played 84 times after signing from Bradford City in January 1923, scoring just once and being known for his long throw-ins.

Wark walks
1996 - John Wark played his final professional game as Ipswich Town lost 3-0 at Tranmere Rovers. Ex-red John Aldridge netted a brace for Rovers in that game.

Bosses standing down
2010 – Chairman Martin Broughton left the club, having successfully completed the sale of the reds to New England Sports Ventures.
2001 - Mark Wright resigned as Manager of Third Division Oxford United after being suspended for alleged racial abuse of a referee.
2007 - Roy Hodgson’s contract as Manager of Finland expired. He had narrowly failed to lead them to their first major championships, but turned down the offer to stay in charge.

A friendly win
1960 - We beat French side Nantes Atlantique 5-1 at Anfield in the second leg of the Friendship Cup, with Jimmy Harrower netting two penalties and Roger Hunt, Dave Hickson and Johnny Wheeler all on target. We claimed the trophy 7-1 on aggregate.

Kenny back in action
1987 - Reds boss Kenny Dalglish stepped back onto the field, turning out at Parkhead for Davie Provan’s testimonial match between Celtic and Nottingham Forest, won by the visitors 3-1, despite the scores being level when the King had entered the fray!

Other reds games
1997 – Steve McManaman bagged the only goal of our trip to Arsenal.
1985 – Chelsea held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Jan Mølby scored from the spot late on, but there was still time for Pat Nevin to equalise
1974 – Kevin Keegan was on target as we drew 1-1 at Coventry City.

1968 – Roger Hunt netted the only goal of our visit to Nottingham Forest.
1963 – We beat Burnley 2-0 in L4. Ian St. John struck before Roger Hunt converted from the spot, the only penalty he ever scored for the reds.
1957 – Billy Liddell struck as we drew a Second Division fixture 1-1 at Sheffield United.

1946 – We lost 3-2 at Blackpool, with Jack Balmer and Cyril Done both netting. Jimmy McIntosh scored the first of his six goals against the reds, with Stan Mortensen bagging the first of his eleven. Jimmy Blair was also on the scoresheet as we remained top of the table.
1935 – Fred Howe scored as we lost 2-1 at Portsmouth. Cliff Parker scored one of his five goals past us, with Scot Symon also on target.
1929 – We lost 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday, with Gordon Hodgson on the scoresheet. Mark Hooper bagged one of his eight past us, with Alf Strange also scoring.

At the World Cup
2022 - Alexis Mac Allister bagged his first goal for Argentina and only one as a Brighton & Hove Albion player as they beat Poland 2-0 in a World Cup Finals group game in Qatar. On the same day, Ibrahima Konaté featured as France lost 1-0 to Tunisia.

Trent off
2014 – Trent Alexander-Arnold was dismissed as England Under-17’s drew 2-2 with Brazil in a friendly in Florida.

Also in international action
1992 – Future red Bjørn Tore Kvarme played for Norway Under-21’s as they beat Malaysia 2-0 in Kuala Lumpur.
2011 – Future red Mohamed Salah featured as Egypt lost an Africa Cup of Nations group game 1-0 to Ivory Coast in Morocco.
2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-17’s as they lost 4-2 to Brazil in Florida.
