Happy birthday Peter
1942 – Winger Peter Thompson was born in Carlisle. He netted 54 times in 416 reds games, helping us to win two League titles, our first FA Cup and the FA Charity Shield, having signed in August 1963 for £37,000 from Preston North End. He moved on to Bolton Wanderers for £18,000 in January 1974. He made his debut for England Under-23’s on his 21st birthday, as they beat West Germany 4-1 in a friendly at Anfield. Future red David Wilson also featured.
In comes Don
1990 - Don Hutchison signed from Hartlepool United for £175,000. He went on to play sixty times in four years at Anfield, bagging ten goals in the process. He was sold to West Ham United for £1.5m in August 1994.
Arsenal again
1996 - We met Arsenal for the eighth time in the League Cup, our most frequent opponents in this competition, and have now been drawn against them ten times. We won this Fourth Round tie 4-2 at Anfield, with goals from Steve McManaman, Patrik Berger and a Robbie Fowler brace that included a penalty. Ian Wright grabbed both Gunners’ goals from the spot, two of his seven goals against the reds, while they also had Steve Bould dismissed with the score at 3-1.
1957 - That was our seventh straight win in games played on this day, a record that stretched back to a 2-0 Second Division defeat of Rotherham United at Anfield when Johnny Wheeler and Billy Liddell were on the scoresheet. This game had originally been postponed back in September.
1982 - These wins included a 3-0 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield when Phil Neal converted a penalty before Kenny Dalglish grabbed a brace.
A double debutant
1897 - Joe Lumsden scored his only two reds goals on his debut as we won 3-2 at Nottingham Forest’s Town Ground. Andrew McCowie also struck his first reds goal.
1909 - We were also in Nottingham when Jim Harrop grabbed our consolation in a 3-1 top-flight defeat by Notts County at Trent Bridge. Freddie Jones nabbed a brace, with Jimmy Cantrell also on the scoresheet.
Most recently
2021 – We thumped Southampton 4-0 at Anfield, with Diogo Jota bagging a brace and Thiago Alcântara netting his third and final reds goal before the break. Virgil van Dijk completed the scoring in the second half.
2019 – Centre-half Dejan Lovren netted his eighth and last reds goal as we were held to a 1-1 draw by SSC Napoli in a UEFA Champions League group game at Anfield. Dries Mertens put the visitors in front, but Lovren headed in our equaliser.
2011 - Vincent Kompany headed Manchester City in front at Anfield from a corner before we equalised when a Charlie Adam strike deflected off Joleon Lescott for an own goal. Substitute Mario Balotelli was sent off late on for the visitors after two quick-fire bookings as the game ended 1-1. On the same day, future red Mohamed Salah featured for Egypt Under-23’s as they beat Gabon 1-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
A treble against the Blues
1915 - Fred Pagnam scored a hat-trick as we beat Everton 4-1 in a Wartime League game at Anfield, with Dave Watson also on the scoresheet.
Bob’s century
1976 – We beat Bristol City 2-1 at Anfield in Bob Paisley’s hundredth League game in charge, thanks to goals from Kevin Keegan and Joey Jones.
European wins
1991 - We won 2-0 at Swarovski Tirol in a UEFA Cup Third Round tie, thanks to a Dean Saunders brace, with Mark Wright in commanding form after a 21-game absence. Saunders added a treble in the return at Anfield, as we progressed 6-0 on aggregate. However, we were knocked out by Genoa in the next round.
2003 - We beat Steaua Bucureşti at Anfield, our fiftieth win in the UEFA Cup/Fairs Cup, with Harry Kewell netting the only goal as we reached the Third Round 2-1 on aggregate.
Mixed fortunes against the Irons
1999 - We lost 1-0 at Upton Park thanks to a Trevor Sinclair goal.
1971 - We beat West Ham United at Anfield when Emlyn Hughes struck the only goal of the game. Forward Bobby Graham made his hundredth League appearance in this match.
Loan moves
2006 - Emiliano Insúa agreed to sign on loan from Boca Juniors in January 2007. He notched once in 62 senior appearances, after his transfer was made permanent for £1.675m seven months later. He moved to Sporting Clube de Portugal in August 2011.
2008 – Ex-reserves midfielder Ryan Flynn joined Wrexham on loan. He struck four times in 27 outings, returning to Falkirk in September 2009 having failed to make the reds’ first team.
Waddle’s bow
1973 - Forward Alan Waddle made his reds debut as we were held to a goalless draw at Hull City in our League Cup Fourth Round encounter. We won the Anfield replay 3-2 a week later when Ian Callaghan grabbed a hat-trick.
Ted’s farewell
1937 – Forward Ted Harston played his fifth and final reds game as we won 1-0 at Blackpool thanks to an Alf Hanson goal.
At the World Cup
2022 – Future red Wataru Endō and ex-red Takumi Minamino both played as Japan lost 1-0 to Costa Rica in a World Cup group game in Qatar. Meanwhile, ex-red Dejan Lovren appeared as Croatia beat Canada 4-1.
New arrivals
2012 - Rodolfo Borrell was announced as Head of Academy Coaching, with Alex Inglethorpe being named as his replacement as Reserve Team Head Coach.
Other reds games
1965 – Roger Hunt and Gordon Milne netted as we beat Burnley 2-1 at Anfield.
1954 – We drew a Second Division encounter 2-2 at Leeds United as Billy Liddell bagged a brace.
1948 – We lost 3-0 at Stoke City. Frank Bowyer scored the first of his four goals against the reds after Billy Mould and Frank Mountford had scored.
1926 – Gordon Hodgson and Harry Chambers struck in our 2-0 win at Bury.
1920 – Newcastle United won 1-0 in L4.
King Kenny’s big day
1974 - Kenny Dalglish married Marina on her birthday at Glasgow’s Netherlee Church. They remain happily married.
International bows
2002 – Jon Otsemobor and future reds keeper Andy Lonergan both made their debuts for England Under-20’s as they lost 5-3 to Italy in the Toulon Tournament, with future reds coach Gary O’Neil also in action.
1946 – Billy Liddell played for Scotland in their goalless draw with Northern Ireland in the British International Championships at Hampden Park.
2018 - Future red Mateusz Musiałowski played for Poland Under-16’s in their goalless draw with Northern Ireland in Poznań.
