Trebles away from home
1998 - Robbie Fowler scored a hat-trick after Paul Ince had headed the opener as we won 4-2 at Aston Villa, who were unbeaten in their first twelve games, their most successful ever start to a League campaign. This was Gérard Houllier’s first win in sole charge. Villa’s Stan Collymore was sent off in the second half for striking out at Michael Owen, while Dion Dublin had a penalty saved by David James to deny him his hat-trick, although he still netted two of his seven goals past us. Steve Harkness was playing his hundredth League game for the reds.
1936 - Centre-forward Fred Howe netted a hat-trick as we won 5-2 at Manchester United, our only ever treble at Old Trafford, with Alf Hanson netting and right-half Harry Eastham bagging his first reds goal.

1993 - Andy Cole bagged a treble inside the opening half hour as we lost 3-0 at Newcastle United, all inside the first half hour, the first of his eleven goals against the reds, a Premier League record to date. This was Torben Piechnik’s 24th and final reds game, and only one of that season, while former reds Peter Beardsley, Barry Venison and Mike Hooper all featured for the Magpies, under Kevin Keegan. This was later alleged to be one of the games ‘thrown’ by Bruce Grobbelaar.
1903 - We also played the Geordies in the top flight, when a Dickie Morris goal was enough to hand us victory at Anfield.

A classic derby comeback
1970 - We came back from 2-0 down with twenty minutes remaining to win the Anfield derby. An Alan Whittle lob and Joe Royle header, one of his five goals past us, put the reigning champions in a strong position before a Steve Heighway belter brought us back into the game. John Toshack headed his first reds goal in just his second game to level the match, before Chris Lawler won the game 3-2 with a shot that went in off the post.

A derby first
The other two derbies staged on this day ended less happily.
1896 - The Blues left Anfield with a goalless draw. Alf Milward was sent off for the visitors for charging John McCartney to become the only player to be sent off in a derby until Terry McDermott and Gary Stanley 83 years later. The game was described in the press at the time as “utterly unworthy of the best traditions of both organisations and never rose above the standard of mediocrity”.
1994 - On-loan Duncan Ferguson bagged the first of his five goals against the reds, with Paul Rideout also on target as we lost 2-0 at Goodison Park in what was Joe Royle’s first game in charge of the Blues.

Winning seven goal thrillers
We have twice won by the odd goal in seven at Anfield on this day in history.
1931 - Manchester City went home without the points after we had gone in 2-1 down at the break, with right-back Bob Done bagging a brace that included a penalty and Archie McPherson and Gordon Hodgson also netting. Dave Halliday struck the last of his thirteen goals against the reds, with Bobby Marshall scoring one of his five past us and Fred Tilson one of his six.
1959 - Leyton Orient lost by the same score in our Second Division encounter, with outside-right Fred Morris bagging a brace, his final goals for the club, and Jimmy Melia and Dave Hickson on target as we remained manager-less. Tommy Johnston struck twice for the visitors, with Dennis Sorrell also netting as half-back Barry Wilkinson appeared for the 79th and last time.

A European comeback
2017 – We raced into a three-goal lead at Sevilla in our UEFA Champions League group game, with Roberto Firmino netting twice and Sadio Mané also on target in the first half hour. However, French striker Wissam Ben Yedder bagged a brace after the break, including one from the spot. Guido Pizarro scored a stoppage-time equaliser for the home side with James Milner coming off the bench to reach a century of reds appearances.

Martin milestones
2009 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Manchester City. Martin Škrtel opened the scoring after the break with his first reds goal, with substitute Yossi Benayoun grabbing an equaliser after we had fallen 2-1 behind, before himself being replaced. Emmanuel Adebayor bagged one of his five goals against the reds to date, with Stephen Ireland also on target.
2015 – Škrtel scored his eighteenth and last goal for the club as we thumped City 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium. We took a three-goal lead as Eliaquim Mangala put through his own net before Philippe Coutinho scored and then Roberto Firmino netted his first reds strike. Sergio Agüero pulled one back on the stroke of half time, one of his seven goals past us.

Evans off
1957 - Forward John Evans was sold to Third Division South outfit Colchester United. He was signed at the fourth attempt from Charlton Athletic in December 1953 for £12,500, but we suffered relegation in his first season at Anfield. His greatest moment with the reds came when he netted all our goals in a 5-3 defeat of Bristol Rovers in September 1954. Overall, he struck 53 times in 107 reds games.

Off on loan
1987 - Reserves centre-back Mark Seagraves joined Norwich City on a temporary basis. He made three appearances for the Canaries before returning to Anfield.
1998 - David Thompson joined First Division Swindon Town on loan. He played ten times for the Robins in his ten weeks at the County Ground, picking up four yellow cards.

Happy birthdays
1977 - Ex-reserves midfielder Jamie Cassidy was born in Liverpool. He never made the break-through to our first team, although he had featured in our victorious FA Youth Cup campaign in 1996. He joined Cambridge United in July 1999, where he again struggled to make an impact, before moving into non-League football.
1939 – Scottish full-back Bobby Thomson was born in Menstrie. He signed from Partick Thistle for £7,000 in December 1962, but only made eight first-team appearances before moving on to Luton Town in August 1965.

Management moves
2015 – Former Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán left as Manager of Mexican side Club Santos Laguna by mutual consent.
2012 – Rafael Benítez was appointed Interim Manager of Chelsea. He led them to the UEFA Europa League title as well as qualification for the Champions League, despite suffering widespread abuse from their supporters.
2001 - Ex-reds defender Richard Money was installed as the new first team coach of Coventry City. He moved from being Director of the Sky Blues’ youth academy.

1998 - Roy Hodgson was sacked as Manager of Blackburn Rovers, with the Ewood Park outfit sitting rock bottom of the table. He was appointed in June 1997, leading them to sixth and into the UEFA Cup in his first season, a significant improvement on their previous campaign when they ended in thirteenth.
2007 – He took charge of his last match as Finland boss as they drew their last Euro 2008 qualifier 0-0 in Portugal, so missing out on a place in the Finals that a win would have given them. Sami Hyypiä and ex-reds Jari Litmanen and Daniel Sjölund all played.

The prince departs
1997 - Paul Dalglish signed for Newcastle United on a free transfer. He only scored twice in just thirteen games for the Magpies, before joining Norwich City.

Strikers on target
2007 - Peter Crouch and Andriy Voronin both netted in European Championships qualifiers, with England losing 3-2 at home to Croatia and Voronin’s first goal as a reds player helping the Ukraine to a 2-2 draw with France in Kyiv. Ryan Babel, Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt, Pepe Reina, John Arne Riise, future reds Joe Cole, Milan Jovanović, Ragnar Klavan, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Dejan Lovren, Alex Manninger, Raul Meireles, Christian Poulsen, Luis Suárez and Kolo Touré and ex-reds Milan Baroš and John Toshack all also featured in qualifiers, with Scott Carson winning his second and final cap while on our books.
2022 – Future red Cody Gakpo scored as the Netherlands beat Senegal 2-0 in their opening World Cup group game in Qatar, with Virgil van Dijk captaining the side as he reached a half-century of caps. Raheem Sterling was on target for England for the first time since joining Chelsea as they thumped Iran 6-2. Meanwhile, ex-reds Neco Williams and Harry Wilson both played as Wales drew 1-1 with the USA in the same group.

2023 – Gakpo scored for the Netherlands again as they thrashed Gibraltar 6-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Portugal, with Virgil van Dijk skippering the side. Darwin Núñez scored in his fourth consecutive game, bagging a brace as Uruguay beat Bolivia 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Montevideo, with Luis Suárez winning his only cap as a Grêmio player. Neco Williams bagged his first goal for Wales since joining Nottingham Forest in their 1-1 draw with Türkiye in a European Championships qualifier in Cardiff, with Harvey Elliott scoring twice for England Under-21’s as they beat Northern Ireland 3-0 in a qualifier at Goodison Park. Meanwhile, Ben Doak had a spot-kick saved as Scotland Under-21’s were held to a goalless draw in a qualifier in Hungary, with Calum Scanlon featuring as England Under-19’s thrashed Mexico 7-1 to claim the Marbella Cup. Alisson Becker, Luis Díaz, Wataru Endō, Keyrol Figueroa, Caoimhín Kelleher, Trent Kone-Doherty, Alexis Mac Allister and ex-reds Sadio Mané, Liam Millar, Takumi Minamino, Kieran Morrison, Tyler Morton, Jarell Quansah, Xherdan Shaqiri, Danny Ward and Harry Wilson all also played for their countries, with Rigobert Song taking charge of Cameroon and Bernard Diomède managing France Under-19’s.

1987 – Norwich City held us to a goalless draw at Anfield.
1981 – Kenny Dalglish netted a last-minute equaliser as we drew 1-1 at West Bromwich Albion, with Cyrille Regis having bagged one of his four goals against the reds.
1973 – We won 2-0 in a League Cup Third Round tie at Sunderland thanks to goals from Kevin Keegan and John Toshack.
1964 – Roger Hunt struck as we drew 1-1 at Stoke City, after John Ritchie had bagged one of his five past us

1953 – Arsenal won 2-1 at Anfield. Curiously, this was the only reds game ever attended by future Beatles drummer Ringo Starr. Louis Bimpson scored, with Doug Lisham nabbing the last of his four goals against us and Jimmy Logie also on target.
1925 – We lost 2-0 at Birmingham City as George Briggs scored one of his ten goals past the reds before Johnny Crosbie added a late second.
1914 – Fred Pagnam netted as we lost 2-1 at Sheffield United.
1908 – We lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough as Steve Bloomer netted one of his fourteen goals against us.

Scottish reds
1929 - Wing-half Robert Ireland signed from Rangers, but only made one senior appearance before moving to St. Johnstone in July 1931.
1956 - Tommy Younger played in Scotland’s 2-0 friendly defeat of Yugoslavia at Hampden Park.
1979 - Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen, Graeme Souness and future red John Wark all appeared in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying defeat in Belgium. On the same day, Steve Heighway and ex-red Joey Jones also played in qualifiers.

Also in international action
2009 – Future red Emre Can played as Germany Under-16’s won a friendly 1-0 in Turkey.
1984 – Ex-red Avi Cohen played for Israel in their 1-1 friendly draw with Romania in Petah Tikva.
