Terry Mac signs on
1974 – Terry McDermott signed from Newcastle United for £175,000. He struck 81 times in 329 reds games, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. In 1980 he became the first player to win both the PFA and Football Writers’ Player Of The Year Awards in the same season. He returned to St. James’ Park in September 1982.

Red trebles
2004 - Milan Baroš grabbed his only reds treble, including two penalties, as we beat Crystal Palace 3-2 at Anfield. This remains our only hat-trick against the Eagles to date.
1982 - Ian Rush scored a hat-trick as we beat Coventry City 4-0 in a League match at Anfield. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, while Bruce Grobbelaar conceded a penalty but saved the resultant spot-kick taken by Mark Hateley. On the same day, future red Glenn Hysén played as Sweden won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Cyprus.

Goals galore
1996 - We beat Charlton Athletic 4-1 in a League Cup Third Round replay, with goals from Mark Wright, Jamie Redknapp and a Robbie Fowler brace.
1965 - Northampton Town headed home on the wrong end of a 5-0 scoreline. Ian St. John, Roger Hunt, Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson were all on the scoresheet that day, with Willie Stevenson netting from the spot. The Cobblers were relegated to the Second Division at the end of that season.

Beating Citeh
1937 - We won 3-1 at Maine Road thanks to goals from Phil Taylor, John Shafto and Willie Fagan, with right-back Tommy Cooper playing his hundredth reds game.
1948 - We beat Manchester City 4-2 in another First Division meeting at the same ground, with Phil Taylor again on target. Cyril Done bagged a brace, with Jimmy Payne opening the scoring.
1929 – We lost a Lancashire Senior Cup Third Round tie by the odd goal in nine at Anfield. Dick Edmed and Jimmy Smith bagged a brace apiece.

Derby despair
1971 - We lost at Goodison Park with future red David Johnson grabbing the only goal of the game in his first Merseyside derby, the first of his four goals past us. Our cause was not helped when Larry Lloyd limped off with a serious knee injury in the first half that kept him out for two months. Referee Clive Thomas awarded an amazing 55 free-kicks in a niggly game. This was Bill Shankly’s 500th League game in charge.

Dan the man
2006 - Daniel Agger was named Danish Young Player of the Year. He had turned out just sixteen times for the reds by this stage, having arrived from Brøndby IF for £5.8m that January.

Seven for Cyril
1943 - Cyril Done scored an amazing seven goals as we trounced Chester 9-0 in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield. Stan Palk and Andy Beattie struck the others.

Ins and out
1936 – Centre-half Norman Low left the reds for Newport County. He only played thirteen times since arriving at Anfield in October 1933, deputising for Tom Bradshaw.
2023 – Midfielder Ben Trueman signed pro terms with the reds, having joined the Academy at the age of five.

1965 - Doug Livermore signed pro terms after starting out with Bolton Wanderers, making just eighteen appearances in our midfield before joining Norwich City in November 1970, but he returned to Anfield as Roy Evans’ Assistant in 1994. He left in November 1998 following Gérard Houllier taking full control.

Lucas off
2010 - Lucas Leiva was sent off in stoppage time of our 2-0 League defeat at Stoke City. Ricardo Fuller put the home side ahead after the break with Kenwyne Jones doubling their lead in the final minute, the first of his three goals past us.

Final walk in the park
1920 - We faced Bradford Park Avenue for the sixth and final time when Dick Forshaw struck a brace in a 3-1 win, with Harry Chambers grabbing our first goal. David McLean netted the last of his eight goals against the reds.

Willie born
1871 – Scottish inside-forward Willie Walker was born in Uphall. He joined the reds from Leith Athletic in May 1897, netting three times in twelve reds games before he returned to his former club for free in August 1898.

A wee miss
1909 - Winger Bert Middlemiss struck the only goal as we lost our first ever meeting with Tottenham Hotspur, with ‘Wee’ Ronald Orr missing a penalty for the reds at White Hart Lane.

Recent internationals on target
2021 – Neco Williams bagged his final Wales goal as a reds player in their 5-1 thumping of Belarus in a World Cup qualifier in Cardiff, with ex-reds Joe Allen, Danny Ward and Harry Wilson all also featuring. Ex-red Christian Benteke struck as Belgium beat Estonia 3-1 in another qualifier in Brussels, with Divock Origi also in action. Terence Miles scored as England Under-18’s won a shoot-out after their meeting with Belgium in Spain ended goalless. Luke Chambers, Virgil van Dijk and ex-red Gini Wijnaldum also played for their countries that day, with Ryan Gravenberch appearing for the Netherlands for the tenth and final time as an Ajax player.

2020 – Roberto Firmino scored the only goal of Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Venezuela in São Paulo, while Takumi Minamino converted a penalty as Japan beat Panama 1-0 in a friendly in Austria, his first goal as a reds player. Curtis Jones struck for England Under-21’s for the first time in their 3-1 European Championships defeat of Andorra at Molineux, with Rhian Brewster playing for the first time since joining Sheffield United and Rhys Williams winning his second and last cap at this level. Ex-red Luis Suárez scored in his fourth consecutive game, converting a penalty as Uruguay won a World Cup qualifier 3-0 in Colombia, with Darwin Núñez nabbing his only goal as a SL Benfica player and future red Luis Díaz on the losing side. Morgan Boyes, Rhys Williams and future red Wataru Endō were also in international action that day.

2016 – Mohamed Salah scored from the spot, his last goal for Egypt as a Roma player, as they beat Ghana 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Alexandria. Ragnar Klavan captained his country but put through his own net as Estonia were thumped 8-1 by Belgium in a qualifier in Brussels. Gini Wijnaldum, future reds Naby Keïta and Virgil van Dijk, and ex-reds Péter Gulácsi and Krisztián Németh also played in qualifiers that day.

Young future reds on target for their countries
1994 - Crewe Alexandra’s Danny Murphy netted a brace as England Under-18’s beat Slovenia 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Wycombe. Future red Rigobert Song also played for his country that day.
1999 - Milan Baroš made his first appearance for the Czech Republic Under-21’s, coming on as a substitute in their 3-0 defeat of Greece in a European Championships qualifier in Teplice, and scoring. On the same day, Robbie Keane struck as the Republic of Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw by Turkey in the first leg of their Euro 2000 play-off.
2014 – Danny Ings bagged a brace as England Under-21’s beat Portugal 3-1 in a friendly at Turf Moor, with ex-red Tom Ince also in action. Future red Kostas Tsimikas was also in international action that day.
2017 - Tsimikas played again for his country, this time as Greece Under-21’s drew 1-1 with Croatia in a European Championships qualifier in Thessaloniki.

2015 – Future red Sadio Mané scored as Senegal drew a World Cup qualifier 2-2 in Madagascar, while Harry Wilson struck for Wales Under-21’s as they beat Armenia 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Bangor. Joe Allen, Emre Can, Adam Lallana, Simon Mignolet, Martin Škrtel, future reds Thiago Alcântara, Alisson Becker, Marko Grujić, Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum, and ex-reds Javier Mascherano, Jonjo Shelvey and Raheem Sterling all featured in internationals that day, with Roy Hodgson taking charge of England and future red Xherdan Shaqiri winning his fiftieth senior cap for Switzerland.
2019 – Mané played for Senegal again, as they beat DR Congo 2-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Dakar. Meanwhile, Bobby Duncan bagged a brace as England Under-19’s beat Luxembourg 4-0 in a European Championships qualifier in North Macedonia.

1968 - Alun Evans won his first cap for England Under-23’s as they drew 2-2 with the Netherlands in a friendly at St. Andrews.
1963 - Future red David Wilson debuted at the same level as England drew 1-1 with Wales at Ashton Gate.
1990 - Future red David James won his first cap for England Under-21’s as they beat the Republic of Ireland 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Cork.
2009 – Future reds Christian Benteke and Fabio Borini both made their Under-21’s debuts, with Krisztián Németh scoring his first goal at this level as Hungary beat Italy in a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Székesfehérvár. Péter Gulácsi and András Simon both also featured, with David N’Gog and future reds Simon Mignolet and Gini Wijnaldum also featuring at this level that day, and Chris Mavinga playing for France Under-19’s.
2012 – Jack Robinson debuted for England Under-21’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Northern Ireland in Blackpool, with Jordan Henderson skippering a side that also included Andre Wisdom, future red Nathaniel Clyne and ex-red Tom Ince. Meanwhile, Suso came off the bench to win his first cap for Spain at the same level in their 3-1 win in Italy.
2014 – Future red Marko Grujić debuted for Serbia Under-20’s as they lost 1-0 to Romania Under-21’s in Stara Pazova.

Reds booked
1999 - Jamie Redknapp and ex-reds Paul Ince and Don Hutchison were all booked as Kevin Keegan’s England beat Scotland 2-0 at Hampden Park in a Euro 2000 play-off, with future reds recruiter Mark Burchill also on the losing side. Young reds striker Michael Owen also played, with Ince making his first appearance as a Middlesbrough player. Future red Yossi Benayoun was the victim of a 5-0 thumping in Tel-Aviv as Denmark won the first leg of their play-off. Meanwhile, fellow future red Fernando Morientes featured as Spain held Brazil to a goalless draw in a friendly in Vigo, with Frode Kippe and AS Monaco’s John Arne Riise played for Norway Under-21’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 3-1 to Spain.

More international starts
1991 - Future red Torben Piechnik made his international debut in Denmark’s 2-1 Euro ’92 qualifying defeat of Northern Ireland in Odense. Ex-red Jim Magilton also played. On the same day, Steve Staunton won his 28th cap for the Republic of Ireland, and first in his first spell at Villa Park, as they won 3-1 in another qualifier in Turkey. Ex-reds John Aldridge and Kevin Sheedy both also featured. Ian Rush and future red Gary McAllister both also played in qualifiers on the same day.

Beating the Irish
1981 - We beat an Irish Internationals XI in a friendly at Tolka Park in Dublin, with Craig Johnston grabbing the only goal of the game as Steve Nicol played his first reds game.

Igor on his way
2000 - Igor Bišcan was granted a work permit by the Department of Employment, and so was free to join the reds from Dinamo Zagreb when the Croatian season broke for winter at the beginning of December. He moved on to Panathinaikos in July 2005, after three goals in 118 reds games, and helping us to claim two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield, as well as playing a crucial role on the road to Istanbul.

Heading to Brazil
2013 – Luis Suárez featured as Uruguay thumped Jordan 5-0 in the first leg of their World Cup play-off in Amman.
2014 – Suárez again represented his country, scoring during the game as well as converting in a penalty-shoot that Costa Rica won 7-6 after their friendly had finished 3-3 in Montevideo.

Heading off
1998 - Reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Celtic on loan. He made three first-team appearances for the Bhoys, keeping just one clean sheet.
2018 – Ex-reds midfielder Joe Cole announced his retirement from playing, with Harry Kewell being sacked as Manager of Notts County on the same day.

Other reds games
1954 – We lost a Second Division fixture 3-2 at Luton Town. Bob Morton struck the first two of his four goals against the reds to give the Hatters a two-goal half-time lead, but Billy Liddell scored from the spot before John Evans equalised. However, Jimmy Adam grabbed the winner for the home side.
1926 – We went down 2-1 at Sunderland with Dick Forshaw putting us in front. Bobby Marshall struck the first of his six goals past us before Dave Halliday netted one of his twelve late on.
1897 – We were beaten 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion’s old Stoney Lane ground, with Frank Becton on target.

Reds farewells
1991 – Future reds Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Øyvind Leonhardsen both won their last Under-21’s caps for Norway in their 2-1 friendly defeat in Italy.

Also in international action
1935 – Ex-red Elisha Scott played for Northern Ireland as they lost 2-1 to Scotland in the British International Championships in Edinburgh.
1938 – Ex-red Matt O’Mahoney played for the Republic of Ireland in their 3-2 friendly win over Poland in Dublin.
1946 – Cyril Sidlow played for Wales as they lost 3-0 to England in the British International Championships in Manchester.
1957 – Tommy Younger featured as Scotland drew 1-1 with Wales in the same competition at Hampden Park.
1984 – Future reds Steve McMahon and Barry Venison both played for England at junior levels.
1985 - Jim Beglin, Mark Lawrenson and ex-reds Michael Robinson and Kevin Sheedy all lined up against Jan Mølby in a World Cup qualifier at Lansdowne Road. Denmark won 4-1 in what was Eoin Hand’s last game as Republic of Ireland Manager. Meanwhile, future red Mark Wright played as England were held to a goalless draw at Wembley by Northern Ireland in another qualifier.

1997 – Leicester City’s Emile Heskey played as England Under-21’s lost the first leg of their European Championships Play-off 2-0 to Greece in Crete.
2001 – Chris Kirkland, Stephen Wright and future reds John Heitinga and Jermaine Pennant all featured as England Under-21’s beat the Netherlands 1-0 in another play-off. Future red Pepe Reina also played at this level that day.
2005 – Jerzy Dudek, future red Raul Meireles and ex-red Arnaud Bühler were all international action.

Gary’s return
2021 - Gary McAllister was re-appointed Assistant Manager of Aston Villa, two days after Steven Gerrard’s appointment to the top job. He stayed there for eleven months, until Gerrard was dismissed.
