Cardiff glory once more
2006 - We claimed the FA Cup for the seventh time, in a game dubbed the ‘Gerrard Final’ after Steven Gerrard struck two stupendous shots. We went 2-0 down to West Ham United through a Jamie Carragher own goal followed by a Pepe Reina fumble that Dean Ashton profited from. Djibril Cissé gave us hope before half-time with Gerrard equalising after the break, his 24th goal in his 79th and final reds outing.

Future red Paul Konchesky then struck a long-range fluke, our hundredth goal against under Rafael Benítez, with Stevie G scoring a stunning long-range effort as the game moved into injury time, a goal that was later voted as the BBC’s Goal of the Season. Extra time saw no further score, with the reds triumphing 3-1 in the penalty shoot-out thanks to Pepe Reina’s three saves and successful strikes from Didi Hamann, playing his 283rd and last reds game, Gerrard and John Arne Riise. Fernando Morientes made his 61st and final reds appearance in this game, coming on for Harry Kewell who limped out of his third successive major final.

Stevie the best
2009 - Steven Gerrard was named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, following a season in which he had notched 24 times in 44 reds outings.

Kenny’s second farewell
2012 - Kenny Dalglish took charge of his last game as Manager as we lost 1-0 at Brendan Rodgers’ Swansea City, with Danny Graham bagging the only goal of the game late on as we finished the season in a disappointing eighth spot. Craig Bellamy, Alexander Doni, Dirk Kuyt and Maxi Rodríguez all played their final games for the club. Future reds Joe Allen and Steven Caulker were on the winning side.

Two-ton Mo
2021 – Mohamed Salah played his 200th reds game as we won 4-2 at Manchester United behind closed doors. We fell behind to a deflected Bruno Fernandes strike with Diogo Jota levelling the scores. Roberto Firmino netted either side of the break. Marcus Rashford reduced the arrears with one of his seven goals against us to date, before Salah completed the scoring with his 124th reds goal in the final minute.

More red departures
1997 - Stan Collymore was sold to Aston Villa for £7m. He had bagged 35 goals in 81 reds games after his British record £8.5m signing from Nottingham Forest in July 1995. He went on to net fifteen times in 61 games for the Villains before joining Leicester City on a free transfer in February 2000.
1967 - We lost our final game of the season 3-1 at home to Blackpool, who nonetheless finished bottom of the table. Peter Thompson bagged our consolation. Outside-right David Wilson played his only reds game as we ended the season in fifth, while right-half Gordon Milne made his 282nd and final reds outing, moving on to Blackpool later that same day after eighteen goals in 282 reds outings. Ray Charnley struck the last of his eight goals against us, with Graham Oates and Jimmy Robson also scoring.

Dom at last
2018 – We thumped Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 at Anfield to secure fourth place in the League and a place in the following season’s UEFA Champions League, with Adam Lallana reaching a century of League appearances for the reds. Mohamed Salah scored his 32nd League goal of the season, a record in a 38-game Premier League campaign for any club. Dejan Lovren also headed in before the break, with Dominic Solanke finally bagging his first reds goal in his 27th and last game for the club. Andy Robertson completed the scoring late on with his first for the reds, with Danny Ings making his 25th and final Liverpool appearance and Ben Woodburn appearing for the eleventh and last time.

Gary Mac departs
2002 - Gary McAllister officially returned to Coventry City on a free transfer, having been appointed their player/manager three weeks previously.
1954 – Birkenhead-born centre-forward Jack Smith was sold to Torquay United after fourteen goals in 59 reds games since signing from Bromborough Pool in March 1951.

Robbie’s second farewell
2007 - Robbie Fowler played the 39th and final game of his second spell with the reds, to take him to 369 appearances in total. Italian keeper Daniele Padelli played his only reds game as already-relegated Charlton Athletic held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield. Xabi Alonso was on target before Harry Kewell converted a penalty awarded just moments after Robbie had been withdrawn to an emotional standing ovation, his sixteenth and final reds strike. Darren Bent struck one of his five goals past the reds, with Matt Holland also on target.

Happy birthday Bill
1921 - Utility player Bill Jones was born in Whaley Bridge, Derby. He signed from Hayfield St. Matthews in September 1938 and scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. He later scouted for the reds while his grandson Rob represented the club in defence on 243 occasions in the 1990’s.

Cally for England
1966 - Ian Callaghan played for England in their 1-1 draw with a ‘Young England’ side, as part of the preparations for the World Cup. Cally made one appearance in the Finals, against France.

Other games on this day
We had only played three first-class games on this day in history prior to the 2006 FA Cup Final, all in the First Division.
1963 - We lost 1-0 at Bolton Wanderers, who narrowly escaped relegation, in a game originally postponed from three months earlier.

1989 - We beat Wimbledon 2-1 at Plough Lane, with John Aldridge and John Barnes scoring. We went behind to an Alan Hansen own goal in the first half, playing his 400th League game for the club. We had already conceded an own goal in the reverse fixture that season courtesy of Steve Nicol, when Kenny Dalglish had experimented with a sweeper system. The second half saw Ian Rush come on for the rarely-used Alex Watson, and we stormed to victory. Hansen also put through his own net in the Anfield meeting the following season!

In aid of the man mountain
1974 - A testimonial match for Ron Yeats was staged as we lost 4-1 to Celtic at Anfield. Tranmere Rovers’ Bobby Tynan grabbed our goal, while Bobby Charlton was amongst the scorers for the visitors.

Roker’s final roar
1997 - The last ever match at Roker Park was played, as we lost to Sunderland in a friendly with John Mullin grabbing the only goal of the game.

Another trophy
1933 – We beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield to claim the Lancashire Senior Cup for the fifth time. Alf Hanson and Dave Wright were on target.
1944 - We also faced Wanderers in the second leg of the Final in the same competition, winning 3-2 at Burnden Park thanks to a Don Welsh brace and a goal from Cyril Done to claim the trophy 6-3 on aggregate.

Scoring against the World Champions
1980 - David Johnson bagged a brace, with ex-red Kevin Keegan nabbing the other, as England beat Argentina 3-1 in a friendly at Wembley. Ray Clemence, Ray Kennedy, Phil Neal and Phil Thompson all also played. These were Johnson’s last international goals, and only ones as a reds player.
2018 – Bobby Duncan scored for England Under-17’s as they beat Norway 2-0 in their European Championships Quarter-final in Burton-on-Trent, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge.
2017 – Cooper also managed England Under-17’s as they beat the Republic of Ireland 1-0 in a Quarter-final in the same competition in Croatia, with Rhian Brewster in action.

New signings
1919 - Outside-right Harold Wadsworth signed pro terms having arrived from Tranmere Rovers as an amateur in January 1918. He struck three times in 55 reds games, many alongside his brother, centre-half Walter, moving on to Leicester City for £250 in June 1924.
1914 – Forward Wilf Bartrop arrived from Barnsley for £900, playing three games before joining the Royal Field Artillery in 1915. He was killed in wartime action in November 1918.

Three for Billy
1914 - Forward Billy Lacey scored a hat-trick as we won 6-2 in a friendly at Swedish side Djurgårdens IF. William Banks and Thomas Fairfoul also netted, while keeper Elisha Scott played outside-left that day!

More reds farewells
1974 - Short-lived half-back Neil McBain died in Ayr. He signed from St. Johnstone in March 1928, playing twelve times before joining Watford eight months later, whom he later twice managed. His greatest claim to fame came in 1947 when he played in goal for New Brighton in an emergency, to become the oldest ever Football League player, aged 51 years and 120 days.
2015 – Future reds keeper Caoimhín Kelleher won his eighth and last Under-17’s cap as the Republic of Ireland lost 1-0 to England in a European Championships Finals group game in Bulgaria, with Herbie Kane on the winning side.

Kenny for the Scots
Kenny Dalglish twice played for his country on this day in history.
1975 - He featured alongside ex-red Ted MacDougall as they beat Portugal 1-0 in a friendly at Hampden Park.
1978 - Scotland drew 1-1 with Northern Ireland in the British International Championships at the same venue, with Joey Jones playing for Wales in their 3-1 defeat by England in Cardiff on the same day.

More moves
2010 – Former youth team defender Gareth Roberts agreed to sign for Derby County on 1st July of that year. He netted once in 104 games for the Rams before moving on to Bury in June 2013.
2012 – Director of Communications Ian Cotton left the club by mutual consent.
2015 - Dean Saunders was appointed Manager of Chesterfield, only remaining in charge for six months before being sacked.

2016 – Midfielder Jordan Rossiter signed a pre-contract agreement with Rangers after one goal in five senior reds games, joining them two months later. On the same day, keeper Shamal George signed professional terms with the reds.

Falling at the final hurdle
2007 – Future reds loanee Victor Moses played as England Under-17’s lost 1-0 to Spain in the European Championships Final in Belgium. Future red Damien Plessis featured for France Under-19’s on the same day as they beat Israel 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier.
2008 – Future red Thiago Alcântara appeared for Spain Under-17’s as they beat the Netherlands 2-1 after extra time to reach the European Championships Final in Turkey.

Also in international action
1916 – Keeper Ken Campbell played for Scotland as they lost a Military International 4-3 to England at Goodison Park.
1961 – Alan A’Court featured for England as they beat Malaya 4-2 in an FA Tour game in Kuala Lumpur.
1964 – Future red Dave Wilson played for England Under-23’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat in Hungary.

1972 – Emlyn Hughes played as England drew a European Championships qualifier 0-0 with West Germany in Berlin.
1986 – Jan Mølby featured as Denmark lost a friendly 1-0 to Norway in Oslo.
1990 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel appeared for Brazil in their 3-3 draw with East Germany in Rio de Janeiro.

1992 – Future reds Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Øyvind Leonhardsen both played as Norway beat Faroe Islands 2-0 in a friendly in Oslo.
1993 – Future red Jari Litmanen featured in Finland’s 3-1 World Cup qualifying defeat of Austria in Turku.
1997 – Michael Owen played for England Under-18’s in their 3-0 defeat to Portugal in a European Championships qualifier.
