Births and death
1871 - Forward Malcolm McVean was born in Bonhill, Dumbartonshire. McVean signed from Third Lanark in 1892, scored our first ever League goal, bagging 43 in total in 126 reds games. He helped us to the Lancashire League title and two Second Division championships before joining Burnley in March 1897 alongside inside-forward Jimmy Ross. He died back in his native Scotland in 1907 aged just 36.
1953 – Defender Dave Rylands was born in Liverpool. He joined the reds in 1968, turning pro in March 1970, only making one senior appearance before joining Hereford United in September 1974.

2018 – Right-back John Molyneux died. He signed from Chester for £5,500 in June 1955, bagging three goals in 249 games, but did not survive Bill Shankly’s early clear-out, returning to his former club in August 1962.

Sir Roger MBE
2000 - Roger Hunt finally received his MBE at Buckingham Palace, many years after most of the rest of his fellow 1966 World Cup winning side.
2023 - James Milner was presented with his MBE at Windsor Castle, having been recognised for his services to football and charity the previous June.

Anfield European memories
We have twice played European first legs on this day in history.
1973 - We entertained table-topping Dynamo Dresden in the Fourth Round of the UEFA Cup, winning 2-0 thanks to a Brian Hall header and a goal from Phil Boersma. This was the first time we had faced clubs from the same country in successive European rounds, having already beaten Dynamo Berlin before Christmas.
1984 - We faced Sven-Göran Eriksson’s SL Benfica in the European Cup Third Round, with Ian Rush scoring the only goal of the game, as Kenny Dalglish made his return from injury as a second-half substitute for Michael Robinson.

Hitting the Tractor Boys for six
1964 - A 24-minute four-goal blitz set us up to beat Ipswich Town 6-0 at Anfield, the fourth time that season we had bagged half a dozen in a game. Roger Hunt and Alf Arrowsmith both netted braces, with Ian St. John and Peter Thompson also scoring on this occasion.

First and last
1953 - Centre-forward Louis Bimpson made his reds bow as we lost 4-0 at Aston Villa. He went on to play 102 reds games in total. Johnny Dixon and Dickie Dorsett, who had guested with the reds during the war, each bagged the last of their four goals past us, with Dave Walsh nabbing one of his four and Tom Thompson also on the scoresheet.
2020 – Adam Lallana played his 178th and last reds game as we beat Bournemouth 2-1 at Anfield. Mohamed Salah netted while reaching a century of League games for the reds, with Sadio Mané also on target in the first half, after we had fallen behind to a Callum Wilson goal. This was our 22nd successive home League win, breaking the English top-flight record set by Bill Shankly’s reds in 1972. We went on to reach 24 in a row before finally being held by Burnley in July 2020.

A new record
1931 – Gordon Hodgson bagged his 32nd League goal of the season as we drew 1-1 at Manchester City. This created a new club record, surpassing Sam Raybould’s 31 goals in 1902/03. Hodgson went on to score 36 in total during that campaign. Left-half Jimmy McDougall reached a century of League games for the reds that day.

Also recently
1998 – We secured a 2-1 home Premiership victory over Bolton Wanderers, with Paul Ince heading us level after Alan Thompson’s sensational 30-yard strike. Michael Owen struck the winner while Mark Kennedy played his 21st and last reds game.

Heading towards the Palace
1914 - We beat Queens Park Rangers 2-1 in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, with Jackie Sheldon and Tom Miller netting the goals that edged us closer to our first appearance in the Final. Jimmy Birch missed a penalty for the visitors.

Disappointment against the Cottagers
2021 – We suffered a sixth consecutive home League defeat as Mario Lemina bagged the only goal of Fulham’s visit to Anfield behind closed doors.
1959 – We were held to a goalless draw by the Cottagers in a Second Division fixture in L4 to leave us three points behind the visitors with a game in hand in third place.

In the snow
1987 – Luton Town were beaten 2-0 at Anfield in a top-flight fixture in snowy conditions, thanks to a Jan Mølby penalty and Mal Donaghy own goal. A bored Bruce Grobbelaar resorted to throwing snowballs at one of the linesmen!

Three for the Gunners
1928 - James Brain bagged a treble as Arsenal thumped us 6-3 at Highbury. Gordon Hodgson struck a brace, with Henry Race also on target, as Harry Chambers played his 339th and final reds game before his move to West Bromwich Albion. Charlie Buchan netted the last of his 21 goals against the reds with Joe Hulme scoring the first of his ten and Jack Lambert grabbing the first of his seven past us. This was George Patterson’s first game in his second spell in charge of the reds.

Tons up
1905 – Outside-right Arthur Goddard played his hundredth League game for the reds as we won 4-2 at Bradford City. Jack Parkinson nabbed a brace, including a penalty, with Sam Raybould and Robbie Robinson also on target. Left-half George Fleming put through his own net in the final minute, with Andrew McGeachan also scoring for the Bantams.
1908 – We drew 2-2 at Notts County as Tom Watson took charge of the side for the 400th time in the League. George Dodd converted a penalty before Jack Parkinson equalised. Billy Matthews restored the home side’s lead straight after the break, but Alex Raisbeck levelled from the spot.
1936 – Vic Wright struck as we beat Portsmouth 2-0 in L4, with outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys also netting while turning out for the reds for the hundredth time.

Edgar twice
1891 – Future red Edgar Chadwick netted on his England debut as they thumped Wales 4-1 in the British International Championships in Sunderland.
1896 – He played in a 2-0 win in Ireland in the same competition.

Other reds games
1970 – Top-of-the-table Leeds United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield as we struck the woodwork twice and had a strong penalty claim for handball turned down.
1925 – We lost 1-0 at Southampton in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie with Bill Rawlings scoring the goal.

1903 – We beat Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield with Sam Raybould bagging a brace and Alex Raisbeck also on target.
1896 – We lost 2-1 at Burton Wanderers in a Second Division encounter. Ted Devey opened the scoring before George Allan equalised. Arthur Capes scored the first of his four goals past us late on.

Youngsters for England
1989 - West Ham United’s Paul Ince won his first England Under-21’s cap as they won 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Albania. David Burrows also played, while Arsenal’s Michael Thomas skippered the side.
1964 - Future red Roy Evans played for The Rest against an England XI in an England Schools trial that ended goalless at St. Andrews.

Staying and leaving
2014 – Ex-reserves right-winger Toni Silva signed a new contract with CSKA Sofia, having been with them since the previous November. He struck nine times in 45 games in his two seasons in Bulgaria.
2021 - Harry Kewell was sacked as Manager of Oldham Athletic, having led them to eleven wins in 32 games.

1908 - Maurice Parry played for Wales as they lost 2-1 to Scotland in the British International Championships in Dundee
1998 – Future red Milan Baroš featured as the Czech Republic Under-16’s shared a goalless draw with Italy in a European Championships qualifier in Andorra.
2002 – Future reds Head of Physical Performance Dr. Conall Murtagh played for Northern Ireland Under-17’s in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying defeat by Germany in Ballymena.
