Ged’s return
2002 - A famous night in Anfield history came as we defeated Roma 2-0 to qualify for the Quarter-finals of the Champions League in our first season in the current format of the competition. Jari Litmanen’s penalty and an Emile Heskey header ensured we did not miss the injured Michael Owen or suspended Didi Hamann. The night was made complete by the emotional return of Gérard Houllier to the dug-out after heart surgery.

Another win in the North East
2006 - We won 3-1 at Newcastle United as we played with three centre-backs and two wing-backs for the first time under Rafael Benítez. Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard struck in the first half before Djibril Cissé converted a penalty after Jean-Alain Boumsong was sent off for bringing down Crouch. Our French striker enraged the home fans who accused him of ‘over-celebrating’ after his goal.
1904 - We visited St. James’ Park for another top-flight meeting, with Arthur Goddard on target in a 1-1 draw.

Happy birthdays
1981 – Centre-back Kolo Touré was born in Bouaké in the Ivory Coast. He arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City in July 2013, netting once in 71 reds games before being released in July 2016.
1982 – Substitute keeper Brad Jones was born in Armadale, Australia. He signed from Middlesbrough for £2.3m in August 2010, making 27 senior appearances before being released in June 2015.

1966 - Nigel Clough was born in Sunderland. He netted nine times in 44 reds games after signing from Nottingham Forest for £2,275,000 in June 1993, without making the expected impact at Anfield. He is now Manager of Derby County, after a successful spell in charge of non-league Burton Albion.

The secretary made a good start
1938 - We won 3-1 at Brentford in a Second Division match, with Arthur Riley saving a penalty from Bobby Reid. Left-half Jimmy McInnes scored his only reds goal on his debut, with Jack Balmer and Alf Hanson also netting. McInnes only played 48 times for us, and was the club’s Secretary between 1955 and 1965, before hanging himself from the turnstile area of the Kop four days after our first ever FA Cup Final win.

United beaten
1995 - We defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the League at Anfield, thanks to a Steve Bruce own goal, the second he had netted for us after a previous one while with Norwich City, and a sweet strike from Jamie Redknapp who was reaching a century of League outings for the reds. This result helped ensure United were denied a third consecutive League title that season.

Most recently
2017 – We drew 1-1 at Manchester City, with ex-City player James Milner putting us in front from the spot before Sergio Agüero struck one of his seven goals past us.

Signing on
1935 - Centre-forward Fred Howe joined on a free transfer from Hyde United. He struck 36 times in 94 outings before joining Manchester City in June 1938. He netted three reds trebles, including notching four times in our record 6-0 derby victory at Anfield in September 1935.
1934 – Left-half John Browning signed from Dunoon Athletic. He made just nineteen appearances before moving on to Southern League side Gillingham in August 1939.

First and last
1898 - Wing-half Charlie Wilson made his reds bow as Bolton Wanderers held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with Harry Bradshaw striking his 53rd and final reds goal and forward Pat Finnerhan playing his eighth and last game for the club. Wilson joined the backroom team in 1905, staying on staff until the Second World War.
1955 – Lincoln City won 4-2 at Anfield in the Second Division as centre-half Fred Tomley played his second and last reds game. Billy Liddell scored from the spot but Fred Tomley headed into his own net and Fred Middleton converted a penalty to give the Imps a half-time lead. Bob Gibson bagged a brace before Liddell scored again.

Heading towards Wembley
1977 - We beat Middlesbrough 2-0 at Anfield in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup as we headed towards another Final. David Fairclough and Kevin Keegan struck the goals.
1921 - We also faced Boro, with Harry Chambers grabbing the only goal of our top-flight meeting at Ayresome Park from the spot. On the same day, the fourth of five FA Cup Semi-finals to be staged at Anfield took place, with losing Finalists Wolverhampton Wanderers sharing a goalless draw with Cardiff City.

Derby stalemates
We have twice played out goalless top-flight draws with Everton on this day in history
1966 – Both sides drew blanks at Goodison, with Chris Lawler reaching a century of reds games.
1983 – Another meeting ended without score at Anfield as Graeme Souness played his 200th League game for the reds.

Up against Rovers
We have twice faced Blackburn Rovers in First Division fixtures on this day.
1927 - Harry Chambers and Tommy Reid were on target in a 2-2 draw at Anfield. Tommy McLean bagged the first of his five goals against the reds, with Red Harper also scoring one of his five past us.
1932 - Gordon Gunson struck a brace with Gordon Hodgson also on the scoresheet as we won 3-1 at Ewood Park. Jack Bruton struck the last of his four goals against us.

Morgan’s first
1898 - Future red Hugh Morgan made his debut for Scotland as they thumped Wales 5-2 in the British International Championships at Fir Park. This was his only cap as a St. Mirren player.

Chmabers for England
1923 - Harry Chambers was on target as England thrashed Belgium 6-1 in a friendly at Highbury. Fellow reds Tom Bromilow and Ephraim Longworth also featured.

Yet another draw
1975 - We were held for the sixth consecutive League game, this time 1-1 at Leicester City with John Toshack notching our goal, while midfielder Peter Cormack was playing his hundredth League game for the reds. This run helped ensure we missed out on the League title by just two points. Former reds target Frank Worthington netted for the home side.

On the move
1987 - Future red Paul Stewart joined Manchester City from Blackpool for £200,000. He bagged an impressive thirty goals in 63 games, before moving to Tottenham Hotspur for £1.7m in June 1988.
2004 - Andy Parkinson, who was in the victorious FA Youth Cup squad in 1996, rejoined Notts County on loan from Sheffield United. He played nine times in this spell.
2012 – Former reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle joined Exeter City on loan from Fulham, playing five times without notching.
2013 – Ex-reds forward Michael Owen announced he would retire from playing at the end of the season, with his career having stalled at Stoke City.

Beginning and end
1941 – Winger Jackie Sheldon died. He grabbed twenty goals in 147 reds games after joining from Manchester United in November 1913, playing in our first ever FA Cup Final in 1914. He retired in 1922 after breaking his leg, with his name forever tainted by being the go-between in our match-fixing scandal with Manchester United in April 1915.
2011 - Lucas Leiva became a father for the first time, to Pedro.

Other reds games
1994 – We beat Chelsea 2-1 at Anfield. Ian Rush put is front before Craig Burley headed into his own net and then pulled a goal back for the visitors.
1980 – We defeated Leeds United 3-0 in L4 as David Johnson struck either side of an Alan Kennedy goal to extend our lead over Manchester United at the top of the table to six points.
1960 – Huddersfield Town held us to a 2-2 draw at home in a Second Division encounter. Dave Hickson and Johnny Wheeler put us two goals ahead after sixteen minutes, with Billy Liddell having struck the ball so hard after just four minutes that it had burst! Liddell’s second-half penalty hit the post and was cleared away. Kevin McHale and Chris Balderstone then scored to level the match.

1949 – We lost 2-1 at Charlton Athletic with Jack Balmer giving the reds a half-time lead. Charlie Vaughan scored one of his four goals against the reds, with Chris Duffy netting the winner.
1924 – We beat Sunderland 4-2 in L4. Harry Chambers scored with Donald McKinlay netting twice before Billy Hogg bagged the last two of his five goals past us, all before half time. Danny Shone completed the scoring, with Elisha Scott saving a penalty from Billy Ellis in the last minute.
1910 – We won 2-1 at Bury. Sam Bowyer and Arthur Goddard both scored in the opening half hour, but Billy Hibbert grabbed one of his thirteen goals past us late on.

1906 – Maurice Parry played for Wales as they lost 1-0 to England in the British International Championships in Cardiff.
1910 – Future red Billy Lacey featured in Ireland’s 1-0 defeat of Scotland in Belfast.
1989 – Ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal featured in Israel’s 1-1 draw with Australia in a World Cup qualifier in Tel-Aviv.
2003 – John Welsh played for England Under-20’s in their 1-1 draw in Switzerland.
2008 – Future red Nikola Sarić played for Denmark Under-17’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 3-0 in Croatia. On the same day, future red Jonjo Shelvey featured as England Under-16’s beat Japan 3-1 in the Montaigu Tournament.
2010 – Future red Suso played for Spain Under-17’s as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Belgium in Northern Ireland.
