Happy birthday Mo
1992 – Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah was born in Basyoun. He joined Basel from El Mokawloon El Arab on his twentieth birthday, netting twenty times in 79 games and helping them to claim the League title in 2013 before moving on to Chelsea for a reported £11m in January 2014. He arrived at Anfield from Roma for an initial €42m in July 2017, scoring a stunning 211 goals in 349 games across his first seven campaigns, helping us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield.

In and outs
1999 - Sander Westerveld signed from Vitesse Arnhem for £4m, a then British record fee for a goalkeeper. He made 103 appearances between our sticks, helping us to claim five trophies in 2001, before moving on to Real Sociedad in December 2001 after the arrival of Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland.
1932 – Forward Alan Scott was sold to Swindon Town. He had scored twice in four outings since signing from Liverpool Pembians in April 1929.
2023 – Midfielder Leighton Clarkson was sold to Aberdeen after three senior reds appearances and a successful loan spell at Pittodrie. He has struck nine times in 86 games for the Dons across his first two campaigns.

First and last caps
1980 - Ray Kennedy won his seventeenth and final cap as England lost 1-0 to host nation Italy in the European Championships in Turin. Ex-red Kevin Keegan skippered a side that also included Phil Neal and Phil Thompson.
1982 – Jan Mølby made his senior debut for Denmark in their 2-1 defeat in the Nordic Championships in Oslo. It was his only cap as a Kolding player, as he became the first player from this club to win senior honours.

2012 – Ex-red Andriy Voronin played his last game for the Ukraine as they lost 2-0 to ex-red Alou Diarra’s France in Donetsk to crash out of the European Championships Finals at the group stage. Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson managed England to first place as they beat Sweden 3-2 in Kyiv. Andy Carroll scored, with Steven Gerrard captaining a side that also included Glen Johnson and future reds James Milner and Alex-Oxlade-Chamberlain. Mohamed Salah won his first cap as a Basel player as Egypt beat the Central African Republic 2-1 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier behind closed doors in Alexandria, with ex-red Carl Medjani playing for Algeria in their 4-1 qualifying defeat of Gambia in Blida.
2023 – Alexis Mac Allister won his first cap since signing for the reds as Argentina beat Australia 2-0 in a friendly in Beijing. On the same day, future red Federico Chiesa played for Italy as they lost 2-1 to Spain in their UEFA Nations League Semi-final in Enschede.

Kenny on the tartan mark
1977 - Future red Kenny Dalglish scored the opener in Scotland’s 4-2 friendly defeat of Chile in Santiago. Meanwhile, ex-red Kevin Keegan was the captain in England’s goalless friendly in Uruguay, with Ray Clemence, Emlyn Hughes and Phil Neal all also playing.
1982 - Kenny also netted as Scotland beat New Zealand 5-2 in a World Cup match in Málaga. Alan Hansen and Graeme Souness also featured in this game, while future red John Wark grabbed a brace.

World Cup goalscorers
2006 - Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard were both on target as England beat Trinidad & Tobago 2-0 in Nuremberg. Jamie Carragher, future reds Joe Cole and Stewart Downing and ex-red Michael Owen all also featured.
2002 - Michael Owen and Emile Heskey both scored in England’s 3-0 defeat of Denmark in Niigata, to take them through to the Quarter-finals. Ex-red Robbie Fowler won his 26th and final cap in this game.
1958 - Alan A’Court played in England’s 2-2 draw with Austria in Sweden.

Other reds at the World Cup
1998 - Paul Ince, Michael Owen and future reds Markus Babbel, Dietmar Hamann and Christian Ziege all featured on the winning side in their countries’ opening group games in the France Finals, with England beating Tunisia 2-0 and Germany seeing off the USA by the same score.
2010 – Martin Škrtel played as Slovakia were held to a 1-1 draw by New Zealand in Rustenburg, while future reds Raul Meireles and Kolo Touré faced each other as the Ivory Coast and Portugal drew 0-0 in Port Elizabeth.
2014 – Mamadou Sakho played in France’s 3-0 defeat of Honduras in a group encounter in Porto Alegre. Meanwhile, ex-reds Javier Mascherano and Maxi Rodríguez featured as Argentina beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-1 in Rio de Janeiro, while future red Xherdan Shaqiri played in Switzerland’s 2-1 defeat of Ecuador in Brasilia.
2018 – Future red Thiago Alcântara and ex-reds Iago Aspas and Luis Suárez all featured in group stage games in Russia, with Portugal drawing 3-3 2ith Spain and Uruguay beating Egypt 1-0.

1990 - Future red Karl-Heinz Riedle appeared in West Germany’s 5-1 defeat of United Arab Emirates in Milan.
1992 - Riedle appeared for the reunified Germany, netting in their 2-0 defeat of Scotland at the European Championships in Sweden. Fellow future red Gary McAllister also played in this match.

2005 - Future red Ryan Babel played for Netherlands Under-20’s as they beat Australia 3-0 in the World Championship Finals in Kerkrade, with ex-red Arnaud Bühler in action for Switzerland as they lost 1-0 to Brazil in the same tournament in Emmen.
2019 – Keeper Caoimhín Kelleher played as the Republic of Ireland Under-21’s held Mexico Under-22’s to a goalless friendly draw in France, before losing a penalty shoot-out.

Ronnie against the Russians
1988 - Ronnie Whelan struck a glorious goal as the Republic of Ireland drew 1-1 with the USSR in a European Championship Finals group game in Hannover. John Aldridge, Ray Houghton and ex-red Kevin Sheedy all also featured. On the same day, John Barnes, Peter Beardsley and future red Mark Wright were on the losing side as the Netherlands beat England 3-1 in the same group in Dusseldorf.
2016 – Martin Škrtel skippered Slovakia as they beat Russia 2-1 in a group game in France, while future red Xherdan Shaqiri played as Switzerland drew 1-1 with Romania in Paris.

In comes Ed
2006 - The club confirmed the appointment of Eduardo Macía from Valencia as Joint Chief Scout. He explained his role, “I work with Frankie McParland to look for players all over the world. We are always watching videos, going to games and talking to our scouts. It’s a very busy job but Liverpool is a fantastic club and I’m delighted to be here.” He left the club by mutual consent in December 2010.

Management moves
2009 - John Barnes was named as Manager of Tranmere Rovers, with Jason McAteer appointed as his Assistant. They stayed in their posts for less than four, disappointing months.
2017 – Ex-reds coach Paco Herrera was appointed Manager of Real Sporting de Gijón, lasting six months before being dismissed.
1972 - 1960’s right-half Gordon Milne resigned as Manager of Wigan Athletic after two years in charge at Springfield Park. He led them to the Northern Premier League title and Lancashire Floodlit Cup in his first season in charge, but the Latics were then denied entry to the Football League.

Walsh for England
1983 – Future red Paul Walsh scored his only England goal to beat Australia 1-0 in Brisbane. Phil Neal and future red John Barnes also played.

Births and deaths
1929 - Outside-right Fred Morris was born in Pant, near Oswestry. He bagged fourteen goals in 48 reds games after joining from Mansfield Town for £7,000 in May 1958, before moving to Crewe Alexandra for £4,000 on his 31st birthday.
2002 - Centre-half Dick White died in Nottingham. He signed from Sc***horpe United in November 1955 and won a Second Division championship medal in 1962, having switched to right-back and lost the captaincy with the arrival or Ron Yeats. He struck once in a total of 217 reds appearances, moving on to Doncaster Rovers in May 1962.

1996 - Centre-half Allenby Chilton died in Southwick. He signed for the reds as an amateur in the summer of 1938, before moving to Manchester United that November, without making a senior reds appearance. He helped them to the 1948 FA Cup and League title four years later and was made club captain during the 1953/54 season. He left Old Trafford in March 1955 after 389 United games to become player-manager for Grimsby Town.
1990 - Danish reserves keeper Martin Hansen was born in Glostrup. He moved up to Melwood in the summer of 2007 after featuring in our successful FA Youth Cup campaign earlier that year. However, he failed to break through to the first-team squad, moving back to his native land to join Viborg on a free transfer in January 2012.

Jack’s treble
1948 - Jack Balmer scored a hat-trick as we beat an Ulster Select side 5-1 at the Maple Leaf Stadium in Toronto, with Billy Liddell and Albert Stubbins also on target.

At Euro ’96
1996 - Scotland lost 2-0 to England at Wembley in their group fixture. Scots skipper Gary McAllister had a penalty saved by David Seaman, while Steve McManaman, Jamie Redknapp and future red Paul Ince also featured. Redders had come on from the bench, but only lasted 38 minutes before he was carried off injured. Mark Kennedy played for the Republic of Ireland in a 3-0 US Nike Cup win over Bolivia in New Jersey on the same day.
1993 - Redknapp also represented his country as the Under-21’s beat France 1-0 in the Final of the Toulon Tournament, playing alongside future reds Academy coach Mike Sheron.

2005 – Future red Maxi Rodríguez converted a spot-kick as Argentina beat Mexico 6-5 in a penalty shout-out after their Confederations Cup Semi-final in Hanover ended 1-1, with both goals coming during extra time, and each side having a player sent off.
2013 – Fabio Borini netted the only goal as Italy Under-21’s beat the Netherlands to reach the European Championships Final in Israel, with fellow future red Gini Wijnaldum on the losing side. On the same day, Thiago Alcântara captained Spain as they beat Norway 3-0 in the other Semi-final, with fellow future red Alberto Moreno also featuring. Ex-red Javier Mascherano featured for Argentina in a 4-0 friendly win in Guatemala on the same day.

Milan in action
2008 - Milan Baroš was booked as Turkey beat the Czech Republic 3-2 in a European Championships Finals game in Geneva, despite not playing, as they failed to qualify for the Quarter-finals. Future red Raul Meireles featured as Portugal lost 2-0 to Switzerland in Basel. Javier Mascherano, future red Maxi Rodríguez and ex-red Mark González also appeared in World Cup qualifiers that day, as did El-Hadji Diouf, who netted in a 2-2 draw in Liberia while winning his last cap as a Bolton Wanderers player.
2004 - Baroš scored in his third consecutive game for the Czech Republic as they beat Latvia 2-1 in their opening Euro 2004 game in Portugal, with Vladimír Šmicer coming off the bench. On the same day, future red Bolo Zenden won his final cap while officially a Chelsea player, with the Middlesbrough loanee winning his 53rd cap against Dietmar Hamann as Germany drew with the Netherlands in the same group, with future reds coach John Heitinga also playing.

Also in international action
2003 – Ex-red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon as they beat Kuwait 6-2 in an unofficial international in France. On the same day, Jon Otsemobor featured for England Under-20’s as they lost 1-0 to Turkey in the Toulon Tournament.
2009 – Future red James Milner featured for England Under-21’s in their 2-1 defeat of Finland in a European Championships Finals group game in Sweden.
2011 – Jordan Henderson and future red Daniel Sturridge were in action for England Under-21’s as they were held to a goalless draw by Ukraine in a European Championships Finals group game in Denmark, with future red Thiago Alcântara appearing for Spain as they beat the Czech Republic 2-0.
2021 – Diogo Jota faced ex-red Péter Gulácsi as Portugal beat Hungary 3-0 in a European Championship Finals group game in Budapest, with ex-red Emre Can featuring in Germany’s 1-0 defeat by France in Munich.
