On our way to Wembley
1981 - We reached our second League Cup Final as a Kenny Dalglish goal was enough to secure a 1-1 draw with Manchester City at Anfield despite an equaliser from Kevin Reeves, one of his four goals past us, to ensure we progressed 2-1 on aggregate.

Many happy returns
1964 - Mike Hooper was born in Bristol. He signed from Wrexham for £40,000 in October 1985 but spent most of his Anfield career as understudy to first Bruce Grobbelaar and then David James, although he managed to make 73 first-team appearances.
1977 - Salif Diao was born in Kedogou Tallie, Senegal. He arrived at Anfield for £4.7m from Sedan in August 2002, and bagged three goals in 61 reds games, nearly half of them from the bench, and joined Stoke City permanently in January 2007 after spending most of that season on loan at the Britannia Stadium.

1910 - Inside-left Archie McPherson was born in Alva, Clackmannanshire. He signed from Rangers in November 1929 and bagged nineteen goals in 133 reds games as we endured a barren spell. He moved on to Sheffield United in December 1934, appearing for the Blades in the FA Cup Final as they lost to Arsenal at Wembley in 1936.
1995 – Midfielder Naby Keïta was born in Conakry in Guinea. In August 2017 he agreed to sign from RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. the following July for £52.75m. He notched eleven times in 129 games, helping us to claim the League title, FA Cup, League Cup and FIFA Club World Cup as well as suffering from a succession of injuries, before moving on to SV Werder Bremen in June 2023.

Last strikes
1951 - Jack Balmer struck his 111th and final reds goal in our 2-1 win at home to the reigning League champions Portsmouth, with Bill Jones also on the scoresheet. Peter Harris struck one of his eight goals against the reds.
1894 – David Henderson bagged his last two reds goals as we beat Preston North End 3-2 in an FA Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, with Malcolm McVean also on target. Future reds Frank Becton and Jimmy Ross scored for the visitors as we entertained a five-figure crowd for the first time as 18,000 attended this game.

Sir Roger’s treble
We have won only four of our fifteen games on this day over the years.
1962 - Our most recent victory on this day came when Roger Hunt netted all our goals in a 3-0 Second Division win at Bury, Bill Shankly’s hundredth game in charge. This was his fourth treble of the season as Jimmy Melia played his 200th game for the club.
1917 - We also thumped the Shakers in a Wartime League meeting, with Thomas Bennett nabbing a brace and James Bradley and Harry Lewis also on target in a 4-0 victory at Anfield.

Most recently
2022 – Diogo Jota bagged a brace as we beat Leicester City 2-0 in L4.
2015 – We beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at Anfield, with Lazar Marković opening the scoring with his third and last goal for the club before Harry Kane equalised with the first of his nine goals past us to date. Steven Gerrard converted a penalty after the break, then Moussa Dembélé struck for the visitors, with substitute Mario Balotelli bagging the winner, his only League goal for the reds.

Al’s bow
2007 - Álvaro Arbeloa made his reds debut as we lost 2-1 at Newcastle United, despite ex-Magpie Craig Bellamy putting us in front after just six minutes. Momo Sissoko made his first appearance since dislocating his shoulder against Birmingham City in November, while Danny Guthrie played his seventh and final reds game. Nobby Solano’s fourth and final goal past us came from the spot to secure the victory, with Obafemi Martins having struck the equaliser.

Goalless against Chelsea
1993 - We held Chelsea to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge as the Blues extended their winless run to eleven matches. On the same day, future red Øyvind Leonhardsen played for Norway as they drew a friendly 1-1 with Portugal in Faro.
2008 - We suffered a similar scoreless stalemate in West London.

Yellow letter day for Jari
2001 - We drew 1-1 at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light in a League match. It was a notable day for Jari Litmanen, who scored his first reds goal, from the spot, and received the only booking of his brief reds career! Ex-red Don Hutchison had opened the scoring for the home side.

Ton up for Quasi
1990 - Peter Beardsley played his hundredth League game for the reds as we were held to a goalless draw at Norwich City.

Mixed African fortunes
2013 – Future reds loanee Victor Moses was on the winning side as Nigeria beat Burkina Faso 1-0 in the African Cup of Nations Final in Johannesburg. Future red Joe Gomez featured for England Under-17’s on the same day.
2006 – Future red Kolo Touré converted for the Ivory Coast as they lost a penalty shoot-out to Egypt in the Final in Cairo after the game ended goalless.
2002 - Future red Salif Diao played in the African Cup of Nations Final for Senegal on his 25th birthday alongside fellow future red El-Hadji Diouf. Ex-red Rigobert Song’s Cameroon won a penalty shoot-out that followed the goalless two hours of normal play in Bamako, with Diouf and Song both failing to convert their kicks.

2000 - Song also featured in the competition, helping his country to a 3-0 win over Tunisia in Ghana in the Semi-final.
2008 - Song skippered his country in the same tournament as they lost the Final 1-0 to Egypt in Accra.

King Kenny replaces Digger
2000 - Kenny Dalglish was appointed Caretaker Manager of Celtic, with John Barnes and Chief Scout Terry McDermott both dismissed. King Kenny led them to ten wins in his eighteen games in charge, as they finished 21 points adrift of Rangers, although they won the League Cup under his stewardship. Martin O’Neill was appointed that June.

European stalemate
1965 - We faced West German champions 1. FC Köln at their Müngersdorfer Stadion in the Second Round of the European Cup. The game ended without score, although they had a goal disallowed for offside. The tie was eventually decided on a coin toss in our favour after three drawn matches.

Derby joy
1945 - We beat Everton 3-1 in a Wartime League match at Anfield, with Horace Cumner netting a brace and Berry Nieuwenhuys also on the scoresheet.
1934 - We held them to a goalless draw across the park in a top-flight meeting.

Debuting between the sticks
1912 - Keeper Ken Campbell made his reds debut in a 1-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers. He donned the gloves 142 times, before his place was taken by Elisha Scott.

A rare reverse
1973 - Arsenal’s 2-0 win was our only home League defeat of the season, as we went on to claim our eighth League title. It was also one of just eleven League defeats at Anfield during the whole of the 1970’s, although three of these came at the hands of the Gunners. Alec Lindsay conceded a penalty that was converted by ex-Blue Alan Ball, one of his eleven goals past us, with John Radford netting one of his seven strikes against the reds as we were knocked off the top of the table by our visitors.

2010 – We lost 1-0 at Arsenal, with Jamie Carragher’s injury helping the Gunners to find the space to score through Abou Diaby’s header. We were then denied a very late penalty when Cesc Fàbregas handled a Steven Gerrard free-kick inside the area.

On the move
1928 – Forward Harry Race signed from Raby United, scoring eighteen times in 43 games before being sold to Manchester City in August 1930 for £3,000.
1904 - Joe Hewitt arrived from Sunderland for £150, becoming top scorer as we won the title for the second time in 1906, netting a total of 74 goals in 164 reds games. He moved to Bolton Wanderers in August 1910 but returned to Anfield to serve the reds as a coach, handyman and finally press box attendant over more than sixty years’ service.

1980 - Lawrie McMenemy announced that Kevin Keegan would sign for Southampton in the summer, after three years in Germany with Hamburger SV. Bob Paisley revealed that the reds had had first option on Keegan, but had let him pursue a new challenge instead.
1989 - Reserves forward John Durnin joined Oxford United for £225,000. He had made just two first-team appearances in three years at Anfield, going on to bag 47 goals in 180 games for Oxford.

First and last caps
2009 – Alberto Aquilani won his final cap as a Roma player, and eleventh to date, coming off the bench as Italy lost 2-0 to Brazil at the Emirates Stadium, with Andrea Dossena also featuring as a substitute. Martin Kelly won his first cap for England Under-19’s as they lost 3-0 to Spain in a friendly in Bournemouth. Meanwhile, future red Milan Jovanović netted in Serbia’s 2-0 defeat of Cyprus in the Semi-final of the Cyprus Tournament in Nicosia, while Martin Škrtel also represented his country in the same competition that day.
1912 - Keeper Sam Hardy won his fourteenth and final cap as a reds player as England thumped Ireland 6-1 in the British International Championships in Dublin, with future red Billy Lacey winning his tenth and last cap as an Everton player.

1999 - Future red Bolo Zenden won his first cap as a Barcelona player, and eleventh in all, as the Netherlands shared a goalless friendly with Portugal in Paris.
2019 – Fulham’s Fábio Carvalho won his eighth and last cap for England Under-17’s were held to goalless draw by Hungary in Spain, with clubmate Harvey Elliott also featuring with ex-reds Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. On the same day, future red Darwin Núñez played for Uruguay Under-20’s as they drew 0-0 with Colombia in a South American Championships final stage game in Chile.
2020 - Jakub Ojrzyński won his third and last cap for Poland Under-17’s as they thumped Croatia 4-0 in Spain. Jarell Quansah featured for England Under-17’s as they beat Ukraine 4-0 in Marbella on the same day.

Strikers on target
1988 - Ronnie Rosenthal bagged his first goal on his final international appearance as a Club Brugge player as Israel lost 3-1 to Poland in a friendly in Tel Aviv.
1998 - Future red Emile Heskey netted for England B as they lost 2-1 to their counterparts from Chile at The Hawthorns. Jamie Carragher and Dominic Matteo both also featured. On the same day, future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played as Brazil lost 1-0 to the USA in their CONCACAF Gold Cup Semi-final in Los Angeles.

2002 - Fernando Morientes scored five goals for Real Madrid, and had a penalty saved, as they beat Las Palmas 7-0.
2010 – Future red Samed Yeşil netted a brace as Germany Under-16’s thumped Cyprus 6-0 in a friendly.

International reds in friendly action
1999 - Paul Ince, Michael Owen and Jamie Redknapp all played as England lost 2-0 at Wembley to World champions France, with both goals coming from future red Nicolas Anelka. Meanwhile, Vegard Heggem played for Norway as they held Italy to a goalless draw in Pisa. Future red Sami Hyypiä featured in Finland’s 1-1 draw with Poland in Malta. On the same day, Jason McAteer won his first cap as a Blackburn Rovers player as the Republic of Ireland beat Paraguay 2-0 at Lansdowne Road. Phil Babb and future red Robbie Keane also featured.

Also on the move
2000 - Stan Collymore joined Leicester City from Aston Villa on a free transfer, less than three years after he had arrived from Anfield for £7m. He only stayed eight months at Filbert Street, netting five times in twelve games.
2009 - Djimi Traoré joined Birmingham City on loan from Portsmouth. He only featured three times in his time at St. Andrews.
2012 - Markus Babbel was appointed Manager of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim but was sacked after ten months in charge. On the same day, former reserves midfielder Victor Pálsson signed for New York Red Bulls, playing sixteen times before joining N.E.C. in the Netherlands.
2022 – Ex-reds loanee Victor Moses signed a new contract with Spartak Moscow, helping them to claim the Russian Cup at the end of that season.

1923 – We shared a goalless draw at The Hawthorns with West Bromwich Albion.
1913 – Arthur Metcalf netted a late consolation as we lost 3-1 at Oldham Athletic, in a rearranged game after it had been called off due to pitch conditions two months earlier.
1906 – We won 3-0 at Derby County, with Joe Hewitt, Sam Raybould and Bobby Robinson all on target inside the opening twenty minutes.

Olympian Zak
2004 - Zak Whitbread won his first official cap for the USA Under-23’s as they were thumped 4-0 by Mexico in an Olympics qualifier in Guadalajara.

1994 – Future red Brad Friedel played for the USA as they lost a penalty shoot-out to Denmark in their Carlsberg Cup game in Hong Kong.
2005 – Future red Ragnar Klavan featured in Estonia’s 3-0 friendly defeat in Venezuela.
2015 – Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-15’s in their 1-1 friendly draw with Austria.
2016 - Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-17’s as they beat Denmark 3-1 in a friendly.
